Arianna: Let's put you about the same distance as Luthael and Gunnar, so 90' from Sliver at this point. And sure, I guees we can say you can use your inspiration to get back a spell slot. As for opening new gateways, if you've got some kind of planar travel or similar spell that could do it. Otherwise everything you all know about open the shadow roads is ritual based and thus wouldn't be effective in a quick use situation. However, if you've got something reasonable within the RP go ahead and share it. Then we can figure out what to roll if needed.
Safe travels.

Scramsax |

Lasso attack just barely misses thanks to the +2 AC from Haste.
Thanks for letting me try. :)
For future reference, what was the attack/skill roll modifier you decided on?

Arianna Moonwood |

Okay, so here's what I'm thinking.
Use Inspiration to get a 4th level slot back.
Cast Dimension Door, but instead of using it to move myself over to Sliver, use it in reverse.
A few more questions.
- Could I close the door with Sliver half-way through it?
- Could I put the other end point inside Lutheal's wall of fire?
- Could I put the other end up in the air?
- Could I put the other endpoint in the same space as the first one? What happens if I do that?

Scramsax |

I'll hold my post until I see if Ari can deal with Sliver. Sounds like some good ideas. :)

DM - Tareth |

Arianna:
Reading the Dimension Door description in the PHB, it's really limited to just teleporting the caster. So what you are trying to do is likely impossible given the way the spell is written. However, I think there might be something there we can work with.
Basically, you cast the spell as if you are going to occupy the same space as Sliver but manage to keep the dimensional portal open just long enough to redirect it to another location.
To specify the location requires an INT(Arcana) check vs your own spell DC. On a fail, I will randomly determine where she ends up. You also take the 4d6 force damage (no Save) the spell usually does for trying to teleport into an occupied space.
As for locations, you can do inside the ring of fire or in the air. Having the end point be in exactly the same spot could have...interesting consequences that you can't guess up front.
I don't think the option of closing the door halfway really works. It is simply impossible to time since everything happens almost instantly.

Arianna Moonwood |

Alrighty. I can work with that.
One last question, could I drop Sliver from the air into the Ring of Fire?

Arianna Moonwood |

Alrighty! Thanks GM.
I'll get a post up soon.

Gunnar Thorstein |

Gunnar did the fly to increase our movement speeds to 60 feet so we could catch up with the runners before they get back to town and bring reinforcements. Fly after whomever seems good to you…Gunnar is just trying to get the lead one engaged.

Arianna Moonwood |

I'd say Sliver. She's the fastest and the most dangerous at the moment. The others are slower so we can catch them a little more easily, even if they are further away.

DM - Tareth |

Sorry for the delay everyone. I managed to locate a yellowjacket nest with the string trimmer today. This was not fun. Fortunately, I am not allergic to bee stings. However, having multiple stings is still a definite discomfort. Then I start a 2-day long work retreat/meeting tomorrow. I likely won't be able to post until Thursday.

Arianna Moonwood |

As I said in the other game, hope you get well soon!

Luthael Invictusol |

Ouch. Hit a hornet's nest collect firewood when I was a teenager. I feel for you.

Luthael Invictusol |

Where is Luthael in relation to party and ghouls?
Thanks

Scramsax |

Ari, I think maybe I missed it while away from boards. What's up with these arrows you are keeping such painstaking track of? Just curious.

Arianna Moonwood |

They are arrows that do radiant versus undead and she only had 20 of them. They were a gift from Taqa a treant that we rescued while you were getting chased by Raseri. ;)
Arianna asks Taqa for some arrows.
Taqa provides the arrows.

Scramsax |

Wow, alright...I need to read all that.
So, I had an idea unrelated to the current goings on I wanted to ask you guys about. I was going to write up a little thing about Dekatron and wanted to bring in stuff from one the Outlands Gate-Towns from Planescape (her origin plane). Maybe a paragraph or two.
Would that annoy anyone to bring such lore into our Midgard Universe? Just figured I should ask first.

Arianna Moonwood |

Not me, but then again I'm not the GM.

![]() |

DM gave me 10 minutes for 100 sq. ft paintjob. So depending on this rally, I might have enough time for that. I was thinking maybe a 5x20 line of lava, placement depending on the Survival check.
Ideally we'll leave the enemy only a 5-foot wide path (one square) to get to us. That way they can only advance one at a time, while we can hit them with three.
Of course there will be much ranged attacks to deal with. The ghouls are known to have good mages, and occasionally bows.
Are we certain this is the best plan? Might not we all stick together and rescue who we need to rescue together?
I'm never very confident about plans that involve splitting forces, unless we know every step of what will happen.
If they fighting force is cut off, they might be overrun. Can we guarantee the flanking force can come to their aid?
Who all is the flanking force? Is there any reason it needs to be more than one? If just Arianna can go, then we're still mostly intact.

![]() |

Does any need the battleax +1?
I have an idea of what to do with it.

Gunnar Thorstein |

The flanking force is 4-10 barbarians from Gunnar’s Horn of Valhalla.
All staying together to set the trap is fine if we want, I just thought there might be a time component to saving villagers/destroying necro-eels and such that one or two sneaky types might want to try…
If nothing else, Gunnar was going to give the axe to the lead summoned barbarian…but all good for other plans too.

Arianna Moonwood |

Well, the idea behind blowing stuff up and framing the gnomes was to get them at each other's throats. I'd rather burn the bodies and gtfo with the villagers we have rescued than risk getting spotted and word getting back.
That said, I do have a bunch of illusion spells that we might be able to use to further the ruse, but that's risky because the plan's already getting complicated for trying to deceive them that way, and there's a chance that it could also blow all of the work Arianna put in so far.
And if we use those slots for illusions, we can't use them for healing spells, and Luthael is too good of a damage dealer to have him burn all of his spells on patching everyone up.

Arianna Moonwood |

Okay, so I thought of a way that this might work.
If Luthael can give Scram a fireball in her ring (Scram's now a she, right?) Arianna could cast Major Image and make it look like Sliver got caught in an arcane trap. She says the gnomes set an ambush and she's the only one left. Ariana makes the illusory trap look like it's going to go off and Scram drops a fireball on the spot to make it look like Sliver got vaporized. We'd need to get rid of the ghoul corpses, but I think this might work, especially if we don't give them time to investigate.
Now, what do we know, in character, about gnomes, and can Gunnar help Arianna come up with a convincing illusion of an arcane rune that traps someone and blasts them after a bit of time?

Luthael Invictusol |

Unfortunately, Luthael is out of fireballs. If we short rest, he might be able to recover one.

Gunnar Thorstein |

In the grand scheme of things, rescuing the villagers is important, but not critical (at least in Gunnar’s mind). After having to see what that disease can do, his main goal is to destroy the infection and the ghoul’s capability to spread it (perhaps saving millions).
Illusion sounds good, though Simple is probably best. If we want to blame it on gnomes, make it look like gnomes did this deed out here. Gunnar is low on spells, too, and maybe sneaking in a short rest while the ghouls are hunting around looking for the gnome perpetrators of this massacre is doable.
Feel free to suggest…Gunnar is smarter than me for sure, but I can only come up with so much.

Scramsax |

@Attero, paints might not be best for a bottleneck (a 5 ft square is 25 square feet, so making a diagonal sort of funnel would be very tiny...4 squares). Could be something like a 4 square corner of steel pillars or something you could corner yourself in. Or like a line of czech hedgehogs. 10x10 ft pit. The magic beans might have a better chance of creating new terrain...there's one that summons a large pyramid complex but of course its random.
Scram would be most supportive of just escaping...reluctantly conceding to escape with the released prisoners if they had to. I mean if we stay we are taking on the entire village force, however large that is. But yes maybe with a trap of some sort we could snip off one last roving party.
Scram would sneak into the village if tempted by treasure.

Scramsax |

...also I just sort of winked in to place here at the beginning. Were you guys actively seeking this village full of enemies or did we just randomly stumble across it?

Gunnar Thorstein |

This is the source of a deadly necrotic disease that has been spreading like wildfire and being tested on innocent villagers. We came here to save who we could and destroy the legion’s ability to make this plague.

Luthael Invictusol |

It is? I missed that. I thought this was where the gnomes were taking their prisoners.
Maybe those two things are not mutually exclusive.
cheers

Arianna Moonwood |

Luthael's correct. This is where the gnomes were taking Arianna and the others in those wagons y'all ran into. Arianna's been wanting to come here to break up the whole operation since she learned about it. (Thank you, everyone, for going along with it.)
Arianna hasn't really gotten a chance to report on everything she saw while scouting out the village, since she got a little busy trying to frame the gnomes for blowing stuff up. I rolled well on the deception check, so I'd like to keep them from finding out it wasn't the gnomes for as long as we can. The idea was to get the other two factions and the gnomes to start fighting each other, hopefully weakening them enough that we could mop up the rest without too much risk. I think a lot of the enslaved/imprisoned villagers escaped after things went boom, but I'd have to go back and check.
I'd say that we dispose of as much evidence as we can. Luthael could be sacred flaming the corpses while Arianna was looking for her arrows. After we do what we can in the time we have to obfuscate what happened, we skedaddle. It sounds like Arianna probably has the most spells at the moment, and I think we're going to need those to heal up in case we have to fight again. Arianna, Gunnar, and Ingryd took a beating, and I think we're all down a little bit.
So, here's what I think we should do.
- Catch up to the group of villagers that Mamluk is leading/being chased by.
- Get them somewhere safer. I'd say we take to the Fey/Shadow road that's not far. We might even be able to scrounge up some food to help get everyone feed.
- Heal up, do what we can to keep the villagers from reenacting the chest-burster scene from Alien.
- Get any information we can from the villagers.
- Plan out what to do next.
I'll try to look through the thread this weekend and pull out what Arianna gathered.

![]() |

I am in favor of this plan that does not involve us splitting up.

Scramsax |

Yeah, seems saving the prisoners and attacking village can't both happen at the moment.

Scramsax |

I believe Scram stole a gnome spell focus a while ago, Scram could drop it around here to point the finger.

Arianna Moonwood |

Oh, that'd be great! Wasn't it on a chain or something? Just trying to think of why that would have been left behind.

I intentionally pickpocketed it to negate that one's spellcasting ability. ;D

Scramsax |

Oh wait nevermind (reading back through the thread), that was what we melted into a silver horseshoe at Invictusol's mom's house. So I don't have anything gnomish.
I could paint some gnome stuff as long as its less than 25gp. Redhats, turnips, or something.

Arianna Moonwood |

Yes please. Especially the hats.

Gunnar is not truly mad at the survivors—he is just being a typical grumpy dwarf.
Are there any obviously infected survivors?

Arianna Moonwood |

From the GM's description, yep. No idea how many.

And Luthael knows Gunnar truly cares, but it is playing it straight in front of the former prisoners

Arianna Moonwood |

Hey y'all, I got a call from my mother a little bit ago. She's in the hospital. I don't think it's too serious, but then again, she's in the hospital. Just keep her in your prayers. I'm probably not going to post tomorrow or Friday.

Luthael Invictusol |

Sorry to hear that. Hope she recovers fast.

Got an update. Turns out my mom has a gall stone, and they're going to be doing a couple of procedures to remove the stone and her gall bladder. She's in good spirits.
Will keep you posted.
