5E Adventure's in Midgard – North (Reaver's Spring)

Game Master Tareth

A small merchant caravan led by Rook Bentknee, a kobold merchant, travels up the coast of the Bay of Ghed to deliver goods and trade with Rook's former adventuring companion and occasional business partner, Britta Gleamgaurd, human owner of the Frost Maiden Inn in the village of Nargenstal.

DMs should have final say, and players should respect the efforts they put in keeping a game going. They can ask questions, they can ask to review a call, but the DM adjudicates. Arguing about the right way of playing feels wrong and disrespectful. Makes it sound like we're not on the same side of the table, though we are.

I am glad to be a part of this game and feel very lucky to have a great DM. If I disagree with something, it's up to me to make it work, as it takes much less efforts on my part than on the DM's part. I am willing to adapt to the DM's vision for the game and not make a big deal of it.

That being said, I love the way Tareth is handling things and I would not have it any other way.

My perception rolls this whole campaign are simply terrible.

I wish I could figure out to how to ham it up a little bit, but how do RP not noticing things? Anyway...

Yep. For sure. :)

Quick heads up all. I'm leaving later today for a week long work event. My ability to post will be much more hampered than usual. Likely only able to post early in the morning or late at night and might miss a day. Will try to keep things rolling as I can.

Should I toss a few attack rolls in advance at some point if there isn't enough room for everyone to participate in the scene? Or just let it play out naturally?

Finnigan: Yes, if could could make five quick attack rolls that would work great. Also, I think your unarmed damage is just 1 plus STR, unless you have a special ability or something that allows you to roll the d4.

Keep me knocked out a while haha, I,m doing some truly obscenely long hours at work this week. Like 4 hours of sleep a night if I’m lucky.

For those interested, for this encounter I used the Wolf Reavers from Tome of Beasts as templates. To bring them a bit more in line with a 2nd level group I cut their HP in half and eliminated the multi-attack. I figured that would give them a fighting chance against the fire power this group has been able to bring to bear so far, but not have them be way overpowered. Wasn't really sure there would be combat especially after those Persuasion rolls, and certainly not one-on-one fist fighting. But hey, kudos to Finnigan for playing the nervous, trigger happy, city boy and changing the direction of the whole encounter. ;)

Also in case anyone is interested, Kobold Press is doing another Midgard Kickstarter this time for a 5E campaign featuring the Empire of the Ghouls.

Just to let everyone know I'm not really mad, I think this game is very entertaining, but Vrindel as the wise member of the group is outraged at the decisions :-)

Spells cast:
1) Entangle to keep Zove from diving off the cliff.
2) Healing word on Trevor
3) Cure Wounds on Trevor

Hehe, its probably better hes frowning at our decisions than rending flesh from our bones like other trolls. ;P

I believe that gets us to 905 xp and more importantly LVL 3!!!

1d8 ⇒ 8 HP. .. Nce again!!!

Hmm, Im getting 1120 somehow. The only xp reward that wasn't listed 'each' on the campaign tab was the 60 for the bridge...so 10 each there.

hp: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Also...I hate the way spells are organized in the Midgard Heroes Handbook. Anyone know an online source for those?

But we're still level 3?

(If we're 1120 shouldn't we have hit 3 a while ago?)

Well, I for one wasn't paying attention at all. Just noticed it was listed in campaign tab. Double checked the numbers, seems right unless im missing something obvious (happens often).

Yes, everyone should now be third level. My fault, i forgot to add things up after the last couple of encounters, and didn't realize we'd passed the mark.

So sad that wizard can't take the labyrinth spell Crushing Trample...that is the funniest spell for non-minotaurs I think I've ever seen. "you are filled with a desire to overrun and trample your foes"...oh man. 4d6 line+prone and no AoO. Rangers get it lol. Just imagining Zove trampling a bunch of reaver dwarves in stilettos...until they actually die.

Took enlarge/reduce (for the party...get ready Aterro), and shadows brought to light (100% useless mechanically, but increases RP badass-ery by same percentage). Target's shadow comes to life and reveals darkest secret. Probably going to cast it on Ibrox ;P jk

Well, his darkest secret is probably dealing his soul for the opportunity to break the curse of Baba Yaga on the gnomes, that he hides from everyone.

He does not consider sacrificing and using humanoids body parts to make parchment and leather goods as much of a dark secret, because all Niemheim gnomes practice it.

So, bring it! ;D

Cheers

Don't recall what it does, but I recall in previous editions Enlarge just never did live up to its hype.

Well, Aterro becomes a large creature...meaning his pecs and biceps double dimensions and increase their mass by a factor of 8. In other words, he becomes a celestial colossus.

But seriously, each strike does an extra 1d4 damage, which might sound lame but soon you'll be doing 2 or 3 hits a turn so +2d4 or +3d4 a turn. Compare casting magic missile every round which would burn slots.

You also get advantage on strength checks (including athletics, shove...grapple) and saves. You threaten a 15 by 15 square (space 10x10) which probably doesn't mean much in zone terms but meh.

For me, it works on objects which is super cool and probably why it isn't 1st level anymore. Lots of utility, remember shrink item?

I think it will be fun to play with, at least once.

I've posted what could be a crisis of faith in the IC thread.

As Trevor reaches level 3, he has to pick an oath. They're all good, really, so it does not matter much, but he is surrounded by strong men of faith and I thought, given how I'm casting him as a failure working through redemption, that he should take a moment to consider his faith choices.

One way to have the character evolve is to have Trevor become a follower, a squire of sorts, to either Aterro or Vrindel. That could be pretty fun as it would create new party dynamics. Another way would be for him to remain uncertain for a while, and look to both Aterro and Vrindel as potential leaders, like a customer weighing his options, asking what each faith would bring him, and the world...

Anyhow, I'm still debating. He is not going Radiance, which is the obvious choice from the Midgard book, mostly because it would make everything with Zove a lot more complicated in a flat and uninteresting way, at least as far as I see it.

Other than that, any thoughts, comments, rebukes, and suggestions are welcome! The oath may have nothing to do with his crisis, but it may as well. The Midgard book as an oath for followers of Thor, and the oath of the ancients would fit with Vrindel, if that the path he goes through.

I think Trevor is heightist!

Just because Ibrox is small, Trevor doesn't find him a good role model.

Ibrox is a gnome of deep faith, albeit a deep dark faith that he hides from everyone.

cheers!
