Skeletal champion guard |

Round 1
Attempting to stand back up in the fiery grease...
Reflex save 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8 fails!
Reflex save 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 fails!
Reflex save 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 succeeds!
Reflex save 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 fails!
Reflex save 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12 fails!
Only one of the five skeletons slipping and sliding in the flaming grease slick manages to regain its footing!

Zagathoth |

standing from prone usually provokes...
AoO (flank, FE, prone): 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 2 + 2 + 4 = 16, for: 2d4 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2) + 10 + 2 = 16
un-flipping-believable...

Boga |

Boga rejoices at the pile of bones in front of him. He maintains any flanking he is providing while calling upon the Lord for blessings, "May your strikes be true, Johann."
+2 Sacred bonus on attacks for Johann, maintain flanking

Skeletal champion guard |

standing from prone usually provokes...
[dice=AoO (flank, FE, prone)]1d20+7+2+2+4, [dice=for]2d4+10+2
un-flipping-believable...
Even struggling to regain balance, the skeletal champion evades Zagathoth’s equally awkward swing... he must reach a little too far over the grease to make an effective blow, and Doomcrescent cuts only air with its lethal whistling...

Lucius steps forward and touchs Johann on the back. "Hold fast to faith brother!" Shield of Faith for the Bear.
Lucius then steps in to lend his blade to the cause, ineffectively.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
The Cardinal's sharp eyes watch the flow of battle intently and as the skeleton attacks he calls a warning!
If the standing skeleton lands a hit, Lucius will use Warning to force it to reroll.

The Ogon Fox |

Round 2
With all these skeletons caught in one big pile, Ogon can't resist copying Arc's move...
Burning Hands damage: 3d4 ⇒ (4, 1, 4) = 9
DC 14 Reflex for half damage.

Zagathoth |

Round 2
Zagathoth scowls at how poorly aimed his last swing proved to be and with an angry grunt tries again to hit the now standing skeleton...
AoO (flank, FE): 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 2 + 2 = 27, for: 2d4 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (1, 2) + 10 + 2 = 15

ROUND 2
Seeing how effective the spellcasters are, and knowing his own claws will not be, Johann chooses to adopt a defensive stance and attempts to protect his squishier friends.
AC is 22 with shield of faith and total defense
Boga-thanks for the bless, but I think I'm going to try this tactic for now! Against skellies, use your offensive buffs on Zag because I don't have the strength or a decent enough weapon to get through their DR and do respectable damage

The Ogon Fox |

Round 2
Zagathoth scowls at how poorly aimed his last swing proved to be and with an angry grunt tries again to hit the now standing skeleton...
[dice=AoO (flank, FE)]1d20+7+2+2, [dice=for]2d4+10+2
This is actually just a normal attack now on your turn, right (not an attack of opportunity)?

The Ogon Fox |

@Fox- yup; I think we’re on to round 2 now, right?
Yeah I just wanted to clarify because I saw "AoO" in the dice text.
After casting his fiery spell, the Fox begins shifting his position so he can distract a skeleton from Zagathoth's next attack...Just filling in my blank move action for Round 2 there.

Quinlan Ifrean |

Pointing at the commanded skeleton "Take them down with everything you've got." Then quickly retrieving his wand Quinlan sends a trio of angry hornets at the closest skeleton. magic missile: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (1, 3, 1) + 3 = 8

Boga |

The blood drains from Arc's face at the unexpected sight of his fellow student and one-time victim. He glances around the room frantically as he tries to discern if his fellow adventurers can see the specter, but since no one is paying any attention, he tries to force himself to calm down. No matter how brave a face he puts on, however, his brow still shines with sweat and his hands still tremble with fear.
Dropped this before, so going back in time... In the red light room (15)
Looking around the room bathed in the crystal's red glow, Boga notices the sudden paleness and suprise in Arc's visage as he stares into the red crystal. Briefly Boga, too, looks within it, but despite its beauty, he quickly averts his eyes to avoid suffering whatever has happened to Arc. Walking up behind Arc, he grips his shoulder and gives a light shake. "Is everything ok? You look like you've seen a ghost!" Boga asks, giving a small chuckle.

Michael Johnson 66 |

It appears the party’s sound teamwork and tactics are going to make this battle a fairly easy win for the adventurers... Unless a wandering monster is drawn to the fray by the sounds of combat—1 in 10 chance, or roll of 1 or 2 on d20...1d20 ⇒ 3...close, but no wandering encounter!

Skeletal champion guard |

Round 2
With all these skeletons caught in one big pile, Ogon can't resist copying Arc's move...
DC 14 Reflex for half damage.
Round 2:
Goon Fox’s magical flames renew the fire blazing in the grease slick, roasting the skeletal champions!
Reflex save vs DC 14 burning hands with -2 circumstance penalty as its hard to dodge when prone in a pile up of burning skeletons...1d20 - 1 ⇒ (13) - 1 = 12 fails...1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18 succeeds...1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19 succeeds...1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1 fails...1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0 fails...
Attempting to stand up in this greasy, fiery pile-up might prove more difficult than usual, so assigning the skeletal champions a -2 penalty on Reflex saves to stand in the grease as well... Reflex vs DC 13 grease with -2 circumstance penalty...1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1 fails...1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19 one stands up...1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0 fails...1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17 another stands...1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7 fails...1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19 and a third stands!
The two skeletal champions that manage to stand in the flaming grease attack! One swings its rusty blade at Johann...1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 striking for 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 slashing damage! The other at Zagathoth...1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 misses!
The commanded skeleton leaps toward the one attacking Johann, bringing it onto the flaming grease...Reflex save vs grease 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8 fails! The commanded skeleton falls prone and automatically takes full fire damage!

Boga |

Boga crosses himself and prays for assistance to Zagathoth, "Lord, bless the strong arm of Zagathoth that it may swing true."
+2 Sacred bonus on attacks for Zagathoth, set/maintain flanking

![]() |

Round 3
Johann takes the hit with a loud growl. He maintains the defensive positioning though, trying to shield the others with his body. "THEIR ARMOR IS TOO STRONG FOR MY CLAWS! KEEP UP THE MAGICKS, FRIENDS!"
AC stays at 22

Zagathoth |

Zagathoth takes advantage of the nearest skeleton's awkward effort to stand...
AoO (flank, FE, prone): 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 2 + 2 + 4 = 31
for: 2d4 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2) + 10 + 2 = 16
He scowls when two of them make it to their feet and swings doomcresent hard at the one that attacked him...
power attack (flank, FE, sacred): 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 29
for: 2d4 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (3, 2) + 10 + 2 = 17
I really need to get keen on this thing, lol.

The Ogon Fox |

I'm not sure who I can realistically flank with...but I'm thinking between Boga and I we can make sure that Johann and Zagathoth both have flanking partners.
The Fox steps up and swings at one of the skeletons, but it's only an attempt to distract it from Johann's next strike.
Aid Another attack AC 10: 1d20 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 21
That's +2 BAB, +2 DEX, +2 flank, and +2 trait bonus on attack rolls to perform the aid another action. EDIT: Forgot the +4 for a prone opponent, but could be we're attacking one that's standing now, I'm not sure. I hit AC 10 by a mile anyway.
EDIT again; I forgot Johann was going on the defensive. The aid should be applied to Zagathoth instead, not that he actually needed it this turn haha.

Zagathoth’s mighty swing smashes the already burnt skeletal champion apart!
His backswing knocks the skull off another skeletal champion struggling to stand, and it collapses motionless back on the heap of burning, slipping skeletal wardens!
2 down, 4 to go...

Fox effectively distracts one of the skeletal champions for Zagathoth’s attacks! A second later, it is headless and lying upon the pile!

Arc Perdu le Rouge |

With the situation very much in hand, Arc smiles deviously at the effectiveness of the group's tactics. "A well-timed spell goes a long way, Monsieur Fox!" With the fighters putting in work up front and no immediate threats presenting themselves, he takes aim at a skeleton and defaults to his usual strategy.
Disrupt Undead: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 - 4 = 7 against Touch AC
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Even before factoring in the additional penalty of ranged attacks against prone enemies, which I can't think of at the moment, that's a definite miss.

Only the commanded skeletal champion and one other remains, if I’m not mistaken!

Skeletal champion guard |

The adventurers clever tactics and sound teamwork results in a foregone conclusion here, so I will reward the party with an expedited victory:
As the flames die out and the grease slick fades away, the two remaining skeletal champions destroy each other in a clash of rusty blades and charred bones! The adventurers are once again the victors over the undead minions of Nero Antichrist!

The Ogon Fox |

Just so we're all aware: my remaining prepared spells are grease and shield (one of each). Don't expect any more burning hands from me today!

Michael Johnson 66 |

Having defeated the zombies and the six skeletal champions, the adventurers are free to explore the chamber the skeletal champions were guarding (area16)...
This oddly-shaped, many-cornered chamber contains both else of interest except for the yellow crystal and brazier...
Assuming Fox lights the brazier...
The yellow crystal blazes like a miniature star above the flaming brazier after Fox lights it with flint and steel from his tinderbox...

Ghost of Garçon Du Berry |

Out of thin air, the pale, clammy, bloodstained figure of young, arrogant Monsieur Du Berry appears at Arc’s right side, but is visible only to him...
Bravo, Monsieur Perdu! You and your companions are very formidable! Do you think your heroic deeds on behalf of the Church of Rome will wash away my blood from your hands, and the crimson stain on your soul and honor? Did you know that the gendarmes hound your poor mother and father daily, searching for their fugitive murderer son?
In the blink of an eye, the ghost vanishes...

Arc Perdu le Rouge |

Earlier, Arc brushed Boga's query aside, too stunned at the time to offer a coherent answer.
Now that the ghost returns, however, Arc is less taken aback than before, but still evidently upset. He muses over the question, at odds with himself for the time being. Then, when his tormentor vanishes once more, he mutters the following response: "One can hope."

![]() |

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
Even distracted, Lucius' practised eye can see that Arc is uncomfortable. He moves back down the line to fall in line with the frenchman and speaks quietly in Arc's own language.
"Does something trouble you, my son?" His voice is warm and kind, the voice of the beloved parish priest of childhood. "Tell me what troubles you, my friend."

Zagathoth |

Oblivious to Arc’s troubled spirit, Zagathoth checks his fingers then announces with a smile, ”two more.”
I wonder what happens when we light all of the lights... maybe the pope will give us more weapons... this sword is great...

Arc Perdu le Rouge |

Arc carefully considers the Cardinal's words. Lucius has proven himself to be a steadfast ally, but still...
"My sins weigh upon me, Father," he responds with a sad little smile. "Should we survive this journey, I may tell you my tale, and you may judge whether my soul can be saved."

Johann looks at the skeletons, to see if there is anything worth salvaging, and also searches about the room. "Surely there must be something of worth down here."

[dice=perception]d20+9
Amid the bones and skulls in the ossuary, Johann finds a yellow topaz of fine cut and water, and a golden bracelet inlaid with carnelian...
Appraise checks can determine the value of these jewels...

The Ogon Fox |

"If you'll permit me a look, Johann..."
Appraise topaz: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Appraise bracelet: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
"I'm afraid I just can't be sure about the topaz, but this bracelet...it's got to be worth something like 700 gold ducats!"
Nothing like wasting your natural 20 on an Appraise check! Hahaha

![]() |

"WE ARE MAKING GREAT PROGRESS, FRIENDS. I WAS WRONG ABOUT THIS TAKING ONE DAY, BUT MAYBE WE WILL HAVE EVERYTHING WRAPPED UP TONIGHT."
Still, Johann isn't quite sure he wants it to end so fast. While dangerous, being with his group is the most fun he's had in over a decade. And as the old rust wears off from his bones, he is starting to feel... different. Ol' da and ol' ma always said that they felt there was more to me than a half-bear. Like if I really concentrated, really focused...I could be more. Maybe they were right all along. I feel like there is something inside me, just waiting to break out.

"My sins weigh upon me, Father," he responds with a sad little smile. "Should we survive this journey, I may tell you my tale, and you may judge whether my soul can be saved."
"All souls can be saved." Lucius responds kindly. "His love is endless and we are merely his instruments, I will gladly hear your confession once we emerge."
In the ossuary.
"So, there are perhaps two more jewels? Let us head north again first. I believe there is an area there that we have not investigated." Lucius suggests.

Awakened dire rat |

A dozen rodents of unusual size are lounging about in this ossuary, gnawing at bones for the marrow... As the party enters, all of them look with beady red eyes that glow in the darkness at the adventurers and seem to freeze, as if in a panic!
Oh crabapples! It's those one guys the little runts were yapping about!
Oh Christ! Are they gonna kill us!?
If they killed all those stinky guys and bony guys, they're probably gonna whack us too!
We can't take on stinky guys like they can! That means they'd make grease spots outta us!
Run away!! Run away!! Into the gremlin tunnels!
The dozen talking dire rats dart off in different directions, each racing to a small, dark hole just large enough to accommodate the giant rats, and vanishing therein!

![]() |

"GREMLINS! NASTY, EVIL CREATURES. WE HAD PLENTY OF THEM IN THE BLACK WOODS."
If he has a chance, Johann would like to tell the group what he knows about them.
