Verily, Verily, I Say Unto You, by English Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis, is based on Christ's words at the Last Supper...but always reminded me of the undead...
Zagathoth |
sorry for the delay, busy morning
Zagathoth grips his sword and raises it to strike. He restrains his urge to charge and stays where he is, as instructed, but he stands impatiently, his whole body coiled to strike...
readying an action to attack the first ghast that comes within reach
readied attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12, for: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (2, 4) + 6 = 12
Ghast of the catacombs |
The northernmost ghast springs toward Cardinal Lucius, growling: Presterrrrr!!! As it comes closer to glare into the cardinal's eyes with its own sunken hellfires, the stench of corruption becomes overwhelming!
The southernmost ghast gambols up to Arc and Johann, sharing its nauseating stench with the gathered interlopers!
Everyone is within the ghasts stench radius now, so I will generate Fortitude saves next post...
Arc Perdu le Rouge |
Reeling from the stench of the ghasts, Arc fights the urge to vomit, covering his mouth and nostrils with his sleeve until he adjusts to the smell. Now that one of the ghasts is within reach, he swings with his sword, aiming for the creature's shriveled neck.
Longsword: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 Crit threat!
Confirmation of Crit: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Damage (Crit): 2d8 + 6 ⇒ (2, 8) + 6 = 16
Damage (Not Crit): 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Not sure if a 16 is enough to confirm, so I rolled damage for both possibilities.
Arc's sword hones in on the ghast's putrid flesh, and as he cuts into the undead abomination, a hint of a smile tweaks his lips upward.
The Ogon Fox |
Coughing at the stench, the Ogon Fox steels his resolve and moves circuitously to get around behind the ghasts into a flanking position.
If there's a way for me to do it without provoking an attack of opportunity that'd be great, but I'm only using a move action (not a double-move) because I want my standard available to make an aid another attack. Holding off on the attack roll for now because I'm not clear what square I'm going to end up in or who I'll be able to flank with.
The Ogon Fox |
After looking at the photo again and guessing which particular squares the ghasts are now in, it looks like I'd have to provoke an AOO from each ghast. That's pretty damn risky. I'm tempted to go for it anyway because I tend to be a bit of a gambler in tabletop RPGs...
No, I'll live to be stupid another day. I'm staying put and aiding from here.
Realizing the close proximity of the ghasts, the Fox stops his movement before he begins. There is a small flash of lightning as he reaches out with a melee attack against the one menacing Cardinal Lucius to distract it.
My melee would be +0 but my trait gives me +2 on attack rolls to aid another.
Attack vs AC 10: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Success! I'm using that to give Lucius a +2 on his next attack roll against the ghast. But since my initiative is after his he won't actually benefit until round 2, unless he wants to delay his turn to be after mine.
Zagathoth |
Once one of the ghasts advances on the cardinal, Zagathoth ceases his waiting and moves to intervene. Rushing towards that ghast, he brings his heavy sword around again.
falchion attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16, for: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (4, 1) + 6 = 11

Not a critical hit so 5 damage to the ghast...
AAAARRRRRGHH!!!
The Ogon Fox |
The nimble ghast ducks under the orc's fashion!
Careful, he's ticklish!

The above is my Round 1 turn.
Johann Kaltgeboren |
Sickened (-2 attack rolls, -2 weapon damage rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks)
"ACK...hughhh...Ahhhgg" is all you hear come out of Johann's mouth as he starts his attack. He takes a five foot step, and unleashes a bite and two claw swipes. hopefully flanking, though I don't know exactly where the ghasts are right now
bite & damage: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 4 - 2 = 161d6 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 - 2 = 2 sickened and flanking
claw 1 & damage: 1d20 + 4 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 4 - 2 + 2 = 161d4 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 1 - 2 = 2 sickened and flanking
claw 2 & damage: 1d20 + 4 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 4 - 2 + 2 = 51d4 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 1 - 2 = 1sickened and flanking
Zagathoth |
who are we waiting on? Could you please mark who’s already acted when you repost the initiative monkey for the same round? Like maybe use the strikethrough, or maybe unbold us?
Arc Perdu le Rouge |
That attack was my turn 1 action. I drew a holy water in the surprise round.

Cardinal Lucius GM bot |
Ghast of the catacombs |
The ghast close to Cardinal Lucius snaps its rotten jaws at the inquisitor's sword hand...1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11...missing!
It scratches Lucius' face with its filthy claws...1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20...dealing 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 slashing damage plus paralysis! Fortitude DC 15 or paralyzed for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 rounds!...1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 claws for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 slashing damage plus paralysis!
Total of 15 points of slashing damage to Cardinal Lucius, plus two opportunities to paralyze! Sorry, Cardinal Lucius! :-(
Ghast of the catacombs |
The ghast between Johann and Arc snaps its jaws at the sickened skinwalker...1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12 missing!
A claw swipe at the bear-man 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 slashes his furry hide for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 slashing damage plus paralysis!
It claws at Arc with the other claw 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19, slashing the young magus for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 slashing damage plus paralysis!
Zagathoth |
The orc snarls as his new priest friend collapses. Recalling a lesson on swinging harder without sacrificing accuracy, he shifts his grip and his stance slightly. Then he tries once more to bring his sword to bear on the foul smelling creature.
activating martial flexibility (move) to gain furious focus. I’m assuming I’m still flanking, if not I’ll use my 5’ step to get it back.
power attack (flank): 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 6 + 2 = 28, for: 2d4 + 9 ⇒ (4, 4) + 9 = 17
edit: lol- I guess furious focus was unnecessary!
confirm?: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 2 = 14, for another: 2d4 + 9 ⇒ (4, 1) + 9 = 14
Ghast of the catacombs |
Quinlan Ifrean |
Quinlan, retching, takes a step back as he draws one of the flasks of holy water. He lobs it at the standing Ghast.
Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 - 2 = 5 Damage: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5
free: 5-foot step back move: draw holy water standard: throw (with bless bonus)

The sounds of mortal combat resound in the diamond-shaped vault, and echo down the seven dark corridors that branch away in all directions...
There is a cumulative 5% chance per round of combat that the noise attracts the attention of a wandering encounter... 1 on d20 indicates that the first round of combat attracts a wandering encounter...1d20 ⇒ 15... No encounter...
Johann Kaltgeboren |
Johann takes a vicious blow, but he barely even feels it, so horrified by the scene unfolding in front of him. The holy Cardinal, fallen. Himself and others retching.
Hope begins to show itself as Zagathoth is able to down one of the creatures. Johann bites and swings his claws, hoping for the best.
bite & damage: 1d20 + 4 - 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 4 - 2 + 1 + 2 = 141d6 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 3 - 2 = 4 sickened flanking guidance
claw 1& damage: 1d20 + 4 - 2 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 4 - 2 + 2 - 2 = 41d4 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 1 - 2 = 2 sickened flanking
claw 2& damage: 1d20 + 4 - 2 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 - 2 + 2 - 2 = 61d4 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 1 - 2 = 0 sickened flanking
The Ogon Fox |
The Ogon Fox moves southeast 5ft to be next to the ghast that Johann and Arc still fight, and he attempts to distract it from Arc's next attack with a flash of his lightning-shrouded fist.
Melee Aid Another DC 10: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 - 2 = 16
Arc Perdu le Rouge |
Slightly panicked by how deadly the ghasts have proven to be so far, Arc contemplates whether he should attempt to heal the Cardinal or focus on the immediate threat. Deciding that he cannot possibly ignore a threatening foe, he swings at the ghast again, now aided by his flanking position and Ogon’s distraction.
Melee attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 2 + 2 = 18
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Ghast of the catacombs |
Arc's blade hews through rotting sinews, opening a wide, maggot-infested gash in the ghast's gray side! It howls in agony, reeling from the magus' mighty stroke! RRRAAAAAARRRGHH!!!
My brother and I have made a grave error! These are not prey... These are predators greater than we! Must flee! Must escape to feed another night!
Zagathoth |
I’d be glad to take another turn if you want but I missed in round 1, cleaving the first ghoul in half was my round 2 action.
Also, you can do it however you want (it’s your game) but typically in Pathfinder you get a Con check to stabilize each round that you’re dying. The DC is 10 by you take a penalty on the roll equal to you negative hp (so at -5 it would be 1d20+Con modifier-5 to hit that 10). If he succeeds he doesn’t lose 1 hp per round anymore.

Correct. I stick to RAW, trumped only by RAI, so Lucius does get to make a Con check to see if he stabilizes...
Ghast of the catacombs |
After Quinlan:
The lone ghast throws caution to the wind, turning its back to the adventurers in hope of fleeing back up the dark corridor it came from...
Provoking attacks of opportunity from Arc, Johann, and the Ogon Fox (if he is holding a melee weapon or still poses a threat with a melee touch effect)...
Arc Perdu le Rouge |
“Don’t let it get away!” His years of training in classical duels taking over, Arc seizes the opportunity to strike once again as the ghast flees!
Melee attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Arc’s aim is true, and he cuts into the ghast with renewed vigor, pressing the attack now that the advantage belongs to the party.
