Backstory:
Quinlan's parents were quite young when he was born, and they had no way of knowing that ancient demonic blood had chosen their child. The trial of child birth, especially the birth of a tiefling, proved too much for the mother and she died before ever laying eyes on the child. The father tried his best to care for the strange baby. Its arms and legs were spindly thin, a long tail waved frantically back and forth, and the nubs of new horns were visible on its forehead. After a year and a half of looking after his misshapen child Quinlan’s father hung himself, unable to cope with the loss of his wife any longer. A kindhearted uncle (brother to Quinlan’s mother) took the infant into his home to raise alongside his own young daughter.
Quinlan’s youth was for the most part exciting and safe, save for the occasional bully. Quinlan grew fast and he grew tall, but he never seemed to grow strong. As the other boys began to develop a taste for physical competition it became clear that he would never win. Quinlan’s adopted sister was always right behind him, ready to stand up for her brother if need be. Unlike Quinlan, his sister Allana was feisty and strong. Allana competed right alongside the boys, and she developed quite a temper to boot. There was always a soft spot in Allana’s heart for Quinlan though. Quinlan began spending more and more of his time pouring over whatever old tomes he could find. He once even nicked the spellbook from a travelling hedge wizard. That almost got Quinlan in a peck of trouble but his uncle was able to get him out of it with nothing but a stern talk. In their teenage years Allana and Quinlan grew apart somewhat. Allana trained hard to join and elite squad of berserkers who had been watching her with great interest. Quinlan began to take his studies of magic more seriously. He quickly discovered that while strict the rules of magic could be bent with the right touch. When Quinlan tried to put himself forward as a student of some of the local spellcaster he was turned away time and again. As a self taught wizard who used what other called "cheap tricks" no one would teach the young tiefling. Quinlan was not cut out to be a farmer like his uncle and the only path to a magic teacher he had was closed. His only chance at a future without dishonoring his family was to prove himself as a warrior. When the time came for the annual coming of age ceremony Allana and Quinlan found themselves back together again. Allana passed every test the village elders threw at her with ease, as had been expected. When it was Quinlan’s turn he could see in the elders’ faces that they did not have the same confidence in him. Nonetheless Quinlan made it through the trials with quick thinking, a few well timed spells, and a healthy dollop of luck. It was an unorthodox method, but the elders could not deny that he had passed the tests. With great enthusiasm (and apprehension from the elders) Quinlan and Allana were initiated as warriors side by side. The big gangly tiefling was tattooed with the marks of a warrior but he knew that he was no berserker. Allana was the only warrior who welcomed him and even she knew he didn’t belong. After a heartfelt farewell to his adopted family Quinlan set off to find his place in the world. Description:
He hasn’t been adventuring long, but Quinlan is determined to make all the discoveries he can. He is jovial and kind but he often gives off a feeling that something isn’t quite right. Despite his friendly demeanor the combination of his strange presence and mildly unsettling appearance tends to put people on edge.
Despite his decided lack of martial prowess Quinlan dresses as a warrior. He wears a heavy kilt of patchwork metal and leather. His chest is bare displaying many tattoos. His face and arms bear similar tattoos, these mark him as an initiated warrior amongst his clan. Quinlan is very tall and quite thin but he doesn’t appear unhealthy. His skin is a healthy ruddy tone with a bit of a tan. curved ram-like horns sprout from his forehead and serve to keep a wild mane of chestnut hair out of his face. His long tail generally stays hidden beneath his kilt. His eyes are green, almost a little too green. Quinlan’s fingertips end in short sturdy claws. height: 6'6''
