Ero Berer my lawful evil zen archer now finally has a backstory. It is up and his alias is completely up to date.

@OmniChoas
Not sure if its worth mentioning but my Zen Archer is pretty decidedly not a melee character. He's a ranged user ;)

Ended up having to re-do my equipment as I messed up....and ended up having a lot of money left over (unless I buy more daggers that I can't easily carry lol)

Δaedalus wrote:

Vrog- how do we want to work together? A more meshed backstory, a recent partnership, or just meeting on the ship?

I like the idea of us already working together, as that will at least give each of us someone to trust among the "recruits". I kinda had this idea that you found my egg and hatched it hoping to get an actual familiar, but that I was stronger willed than you thought and so we've come to an understanding where we respect each other's power, if not personality. Let me know what you think.

Sending a PM, to avoid clogging up the thread with back-and-forth collaboration.

Backstory:

Kathandrax, like all Dragons, was hatched from an egg. His first glimpse of the world was of a weird looking humanoid, that his Draconic knowledge told him was a Tiefling. He felt hurting in his head, and the thoughts of the creature before him, demanding him to submit and be subservient.

Stupid mortal, I am a Dragon. I might as well be your god. he thought through the burgeoning telepathic link And one does not command a god. He then severed the link, rendering any chance of becoming a familiar moot.

After a few minutes of cleaning his egg from his glorious form, the dragon looked up and saw that the Tiefling was watching him.

After a few undignified tries that nearly resulted in him unleashing his Draconic Might against the creature who had the audacity to watch him stumble, he said in completely fluent Common "What is you want, hooman?"

The Tiefling, it turned out, had just lost his birthers as well, and was trying to learn magic. Being the Magnanimous being that he is, Kathandrax (for that was his name, he decided) choose to take ownership of the Tiefling and teach him the ways of magic.

All in all, it was very generous of him, if Kathandrax did think so himself. While his new pet read books to gather knowledge and power, Kathandrax took to the skys like the awe-inspiring being that he was.

That some foul monster stopped him from gracefully flying caused him to attack and devour it, it's screeching forever silenced.

His hunger sated, he returned to his pet, who was still reading. Kathandrax looked over his shoulder at the magic, laughed his majestic laugh, and effortlessly produced the spell. "Dragons are the undisputed creators and masters of magic. Why are you so surprised?"

"I grow weary now. Wake me when you have learned something of note, pet."

That was a while ago, as mortals tell time, and during that time Kathandrax learned a great deal of things: the mortal word for Master (Familiar), his pet's name (Veltisiel), The tastiest of creatures that mortals keep as pets (Goats), and that his pet makes some bad choices, like stopping in the dingy bar called the Formidable Maid to "Gather Information", which seemed to mean drinking smelly water and then losing one's wits. Kathandrax did not understand his pet sometimes.

He also did not understand how the master thieves managed to sneak up on him and catch him in a sack, nor how they knew to come armed with anti-draconic weaponry (which clearly marked them as masters of preparation, if not intelligence). His last thoughts were that when he awoke, he would certainly yell at his pet.

Background:

People join the pirates life for many reasons,
Life on the sea...
High adventure...
PLUNDER!!!!

Tamekatsu has a slightly less common reason, duty.
There has always been a Jinx Eater out there that has descended from the Haniman clan's rookery. Always a fierce specimen of the swordsman's art, always a bird of distinction, a bird of wealth. Tamekatsu will be that bird. Better yet, there is going to be suffering, so much suffering.

Tamekatsu has been serving the midnight lord for barely a year now, having heard the whispers of faith upon the wind and in the shadowed places. Dark pleasures for a swath of pain cut a cross the seas of the shackles. Not the quick needless slaughter of the current pirate nation... slow purposeful pain and terror that will be heard in every corner of the inner sea... and beyond.

Estimate on the end time for recruiting?...

DM waz up? wrote:

Undead continued: okay, along these lines I will allow Undead as long as the base race is a non-monster race, and it drops the point buy to 15, to compensate for the increased Stats and lack of Constitution. So long as the CR added doesn't pass 2.

Although the reason I'm hesitant about this is that you are kidnapped in the first book to join a Crew... I don't think a captain would think grabbing a skeleton or Something worse would be very smart of them...

Alternatively you can be revied in-game as undead instead of through the standard spells. Of course this implies someone can do that.

In regards to that, I will also allow for inherited lycanthrope following the same rules except it has 20pt instead of 15.

That one I would say could vary depending on what class(es) they pick, how they would play, and if they intent on always be in Hybrid form... Fullcasters, Int casters and Wis casters can gain a s***load of with "Always in Hybrid Form" other classes, not as much, unless you modify the rules for stats changes when transformed.

Now for my usual Questions:

* Templates? Nevermind.

* Young Characters?

* Ability Scores adjustment by age categories, does it work core rules or more like PFS?

* DnD 3.5 Unearthed Arcana Generic Classes?

Background:

Malik was born on the isle of Kepre Dua to a pair of elves. While he was blessed with a touch of the divine, he was considered cursed by the mad queen Kaala Raingold. Due to his lack of pure elven blood she exiled the babe on pain of death. Malik's parents refusing to abandon or let their child be killed, left the isle of the ocean elves. They made their way to the only other island with a large number of elves, Ushinawa. Taking Zeibo as their home island. Their they raised their strange son in an almost as strange place. The product of a interesting childhood in a land of samurai, geisha, and pirates. It was little wonder that Malik acquired a hunger for all that life could offer or he could take. Spending just enough time studying under Kazumi Nanbatwa to learn a number of useful skills and the secret power of music. He was thrown out of her tutelage when he was found under a number of geisha. It was then that he took to joining any ship that would have him, traveling the shackles as an entertainer more often then a deckhand. He never stayed long, taking in experience and some ill gotten loot before over staying his welcome.

It was during one of these short lived crews that found Malik alone on the sea's. His ship and fellow crew mates having ran afoul a vicious storm. He was left with a piece of hull and what he managed to hold on to or salvage. He used his skills to keep himself alive, along with the odd bit of magic. Most would have already fallen to exposure or the burden of survival. Still Malik was a cruel optimist, which was rewarded a week into his drifting with a number of aquatic predators. He speared one before the day was done. Eating the creature that night, saving some to be dryed out by the next days sun. Only more came, these more dangerous then the last. Cursing his luck, again he fought them off with great effort. If it wasn't for his magic he would have died. The third day saw deep water behemoths, not a very religious sort he preyed to the gods of the seas. Only to have his make shift raft over turned while being beaten about by the large predators. He made it to the surface just long enough to catch his breath and curse the sea gods with a stream of insults drew every ounce of imaginative talent he possessed. Fully expecting to be eaten in the next moment. Only the beast were gone and only his raft of ship hull was left. He climbed back on and spotted the strange sight of a parrot standing on water. Paddling over he found it was perch atop the tip of a mast with a large flag bearing skull and cross bones. He tied his piece of wood to it and dived below. He managed to salvage some supplies. Apparently the ship had sunk not to long ago, it's good were well preserved, more then that it had sunk atop a section of sea that rose high from the depths. Using rope and the flag to catch the wind he made a improvised sail, this would speed him along. Still without direction to land, it was a minor improvement. That's when he saw the parrot take off, the wind following it. Thinking the bird may know of land and with the wind blowing in the same direction he gambled. Throwing up the pirate flag turned sail the raft raced over the water. Had he not strapped it to his legs he would have been torn off the piece of wood. Soon he was right on the parrots tail, yet relentlessly the bird flew in front of him seemingly without effort. The minutes turned to hours and even days. The wind never died and the brightly colored bird never tired, Malik was reaching his limit. He could even feel his limbs anymore, that's when he noticed the mist even as he focused soley on the bird. It was getting thicker and thicker, then with a huge crash he was flung through the air. He could have sworn he heard deep laughter before he hit the sandy beach hard. He didn't get up or try to move he just lay on the precious cool sand.

He didn't remember the rough and strong hands that picked him up or the soft bed. He didn't even remember eating or drinking. He just remembered waking up in an inn called Mother Tagrette on Besmara's Throne. The innkeeper assured him his stayed had been paid for and he was free to go after a visit to the holy isle. Malik did as he was bid, even if he did find everything strange in his muddled mind. When he was standing with in the temple of Besmara he was approached by an elderly woman who asked to hear how he got there. Seeing no point in keeping secrets he told his tale, if with a bit of flair due to his training. The woman said only that Malik owed Besmara, gave him a wooden holy symbol along with Besmara's Code. She handed over a small bag of gold as well, biding he return one day with more then gold.

He spent one more night, he read the code having little better to do. He found he quite liked Besmara more then he thought, he knew of her anyone in the shackles did. But he had never looked deeper. It was with introspection that he left Besmara's Throne. He was headed for Port Peril this time, maybe after a little fun he would visit the local temple their. Maybe their was more to the Pirate Queen, he thought he rather liked her.

Am I too late to apply? I was lurking on the interest check and have been too busy to actually post interest until now.

My first thought on something to play: A BARD! No really, it's not a poor joke, I just had to word it like one.

I'm going to back out. I've got a character who would be fun to play, but I'm struggling to put together a backstory I'm satisfied with.

Second time this has happened with a Skull & Shackles PbP game. Maybe I'm just not good at playing pirates...

This is Brain_in_a_Jar's submission.

Arok the Drowned is a cultist of Bokrug the great water lizard. I'll have my Background added into the profile later today.

Just wanted to make sure this was okay before spending to much time on it.

Dammit, someone with the Same Avatar! :) Well, we can talk about changing if we both manage to get picked.

DM waz up?, we meet again!

This is Shakaro Jun. Nagaji oracle of the wood mystery. He is a primitive from a tropical island off the coast of Garund. After his village was wiped out by pirates he stowed away on another ship to chase them, assuming the ship would take him to "where the ships come from," not having any idea where that was.

I don't necessarily see him as evil, but he is ruthless and bent on revenge. So alignment will be CN, probably. He worships Gozreh.

Shakaro was made as a replacement character for an existing Skull & Shackles campaign so his stats are currently for 7th level. But I can rejigger them to work with your system and 1st level.

So let's do some rolls:

Set 1:
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 4) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 6) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 3) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 3) + 6 = 10
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 1) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 2) + 6 = 14

Set 2:
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 1) + 6 = 9
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 5) + 6 = 15
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 5) + 6 = 12
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 6) + 6 = 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 2) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 6) + 6 = 17

Yeah, I can definitely work with set #2.

Because of how varied the submissions are, I'm creating a spreadsheet (work in progress) that shows each person's role, type of villany, strengths (on a 1-10 scale), and so on. Please edit as needed if your character's role is misrepresented- I did my best based off of the stat blocks, but they can sometimes be hard to figure out.

I'm a tiny sized melee monster. What's so hard about that?

Vrog Skyreaver wrote:

Sure, you're pretty easy, but I'm the only real 'arcane' submission. The others are a psychic antibard, three alchemists, and a waterbending fey creature.

Also, be sure to make sure I got you right, everyone. I'm working my way down the list, but it's tricky sometimes, and I'm not always sure what score to give to everybody's strengths.

Have to (and hate to) ask this but, are you really interested in running this? Also, do you even have the time?

Like I said, it's a work in progress. I'm working my way through the submissions, one by one. It'll take some time, but I posted the link before it was done in case anyone wanted to put themselves in before I got to them.

Also, I fixed the editing privileges. You should be able to change it now if you try.

LOL! Guy, that is amazingly rude, sir.

Remember, the greatest thing about a new adventure starting is making a character! So make it, young, old, north, south, whatever. If the DM loves the character, and doesn't love the rules used to create it, he'll ask you to change it. Don't get annoyed he didn't answer your question as quickly as you'd like. Have fun.

And Aaedalus, I love the last column.

yes, I do, I can make Time. Alot of the games I run are slow, so I don't expect the game to finish any time soon, all you have to do is be patient.

I work most days, but I can update frequently if I need to. I tend to prioritize Pathfinder over most other games and such so this will be at the top of the list for things to do.

Molly May Woodson wrote:

I also had an 'evilness' column in at first, where you could rank how villainous you are from 1-10, but I took it out because: A, it was ridiculous, and B, I had no real way to judge.

May I suggest a puppy kicked rating. If you have one kicked puppies, your a beginner evil like a common bandit. While if you have five kicked puppies your lich level evil. I think it could work. :D

A couple things I noticed while going through the submissions,

Lord Foul II/The Yellow Boxes/Wade Willhelm, is your submission... Wade? I don't quite understand...

Peet, you need at least a +1 BAB to take Power Attack. These are the dangers of scaling down a high level character, I suppose.

But the spreadsheet is done! Or, as much as I could at least.
We have 23 applicants, but a total of 50 have expressed interest. Be sure to edit the sheet if anything is wrong.

How many players will you be taking, DM?

Dark Archive

Imma make something undead and wonky. Gimme a sec.

A few people dropped out, did you take those into account? Also I noticed that I did not use background skills in my build when they were allowed. I think the same happened for some others. I'll be reposting my updated sheet in a while.

All the ones I spotted. If I saw a post where they said they dropped out, I just deleted their row.

Alright 15 point buy skeletal champion aquatic bloodline sorcerer with a whole bunch of limitations and an answer to why he would be kidnapped.

How this Came to be:
Daleth was born to loving parents who doted on him constantly. Their estate stretched over the border into the Elven forests. Daleth was allowed to roam and wonder as he pleased. This would be his undoing. The child saw a light in the distance and it was shiny and he wanted it. It led him deeper and deeper into the forest until he came to a calm pool of water with the light shining in the depths. He saw his reflection and reached out to it. His reflection darted towards him and pulled him into the First World.

The young child found himself surrounded by darting creatures taunting him and dragging him from the pool of water. Clasping shackles to his feet and knocking the boy unconscious the quicklings dragged him to the docks where they kept their vessel.

They took the child to a island covered in the wrecks of ships and inhabited by the former crews. It served as a port of call for slaver's and Fey pirates. The child awoke in a pit surrounded by other children and the occasional blankly staring adult. Up above the slave pit a man stripped of his skin stared down at him and licked his lips. With his hands still bound by chains the child began to weep.

This caught the attention of a small shadow cloaked figure. She called out to the nightmarish man, "How much for the new one?" The skinned man said,"For you, Elizabeth, you may have him for as long as you like but his flesh shall be mine." Elizabeth said,"Give me 10 years before you take his flesh. He needs to grow a bit for my purposes." The flayed man said,"Take him then." Elizabeth nodded and suddenly shadows grabbed the boy and dragged him to her side.

The boy finally saw the face of his new owner. Her eyebrows were massive and her ears were like his but pointed more. Her eyes were solid black but filled with sparkling stars. Her youthful face was framed by her jet black hair and a necklace of amber beads. The boy fell under a powerful charm. Love.

The boy served her well for 9 years. During this time he was given a tabard with her symbol blazoned upon it. She said none would harm him as long as he wore it. This proved true and the boy wondered what power she held. The work was simple, he was given a wand and told to gather corpse into a pile use the wand and then carry the corpses back to her estate.

What a wonderful estate it was. The remains of some great metal behemoth with its name carved into the hull. Hatsuse. The boy wandered about the name while he stared into the sea. He was the only one besides Elizabeth herself allowed into the great wreck, and even then some sections he was banned from entering. The ship stretched deep into the sea and the great gash that must have sunk the vessel served as a dock.

Elizabeth had a small fleet. The designs were strange and varied. None had crew. She said it was her hobby. Daleth was allowed to learn how they worked and allowed to take the smaller ones out into the sea. He loved the sea. He once found a book written in a language he could not read so of course he showed it to Elizabeth.

She spoke of a land beyond the stars inhabited by creatures who spoke and wrote this. She taught the boy Aklo and Sylvan. The book served as his textbook and within was the writing of Ragadahn. Take what you want when you want it became second nature to the boy. The sea called to him and he spent more and more time exploring it's depths, his tabard constantly on him no mater what.

The boy was happy to serve her. He was fed and given safety. The nightmarish creatures he occasionally saw became commonplace. The teachings of Ragadahn became cemented in his heart. Then Elizabeth calle dhim to the top deck and calmly reminded him 10 years had passed. The man was was scared.

She offered him a choice. Give his shadow and she would let him stay by her side, or have her do nothing. He gave his shadow to his beloved. Then the flayed man called from below to claim his prize. She pushed the man to his death.

This wasn't the end though. She kept her word and dragged his body to the sea were she raised him from death itself. She smeared ointment upon him as he woke and told him of what had occurred. Her face as beautiful as ever. She then asked what he wanted to do. The man kissed her.

The man enjoyed her company for years, always applying his ointment and collecting the corpses of those less fortunate. His heart hardened as time went on and he sought greater power. His love taught him her arts but the sea called to him. Water answered his call not cold dead flesh.

Elizabeth was not surprised and taught him what he must do to gain strength. The man was happy to refine his talents for a century, always being by her side. Then it happened. Elizabeth overreached and summoned a demon beyond her power to control. Daleth found his beloved dead the next morning on the hundredth anniversary of their first night. Worse still were the escaping experiments fighting the demons brought forth by the gate. Daleth needed his love back no matter what.

She had spoken of magic that could raise the dead and bring back even fey. But first he was determined to avenge her. He grabbed he necklace and set off into the sections of the ship he was forbidden to go into. He found cages filled near to bursting with children screaming for release and unimaginable horrors tearing into them and feasting. One young child ran to him seeking safety. Daleth grabbed him and sealed the door behind them. He led the child to what he said was safety. Deep in the bowels of the ship Daleth found what he sought. A dust covered door with word Torpedeo scrawled on it.

It was untouched throughout the years and he gave the child the necklace, told him it would be safe and said if he heard bashing at the door to through necklace at it. Then he stacked the giant metal tubes scattered about the room near the door and left at a dead sprint. He rushed back to his lovers body.

He cut her hair and pressed it into his book and rushed to the back of the ship. Daleth saw the sea and the ship he would escape on. Then the world was torn asunder. An explosion shattered the sip and sent him flying into the sea. Daleth had his revenge. But he was lost on how to get his love back. Then he saw a glimmer. a calm pool of water just like the one that brought him here. He stepped through.

Crunch for the Fluff:
He took the rich parents trait which gave him the starting cash for 3 Ungent of Revifactions. One of these is used shortly before campaign start. This should buy him some time before being an undead monster becomes a problem.

Elizabeth was a 8th level shadow Collector sorcerer. Daleth has her hair in his book of Ragadahn his tabard which he keeps in good repair and his remaining 2 pots of ointment.

The lack of background skills is intentional. He already has bonus skills from the extra hd and I thought it would be overkill.

The lack of offensive spells constrains him to a support role so he should help other characters and not steal the spotlight.

Since his shadow is stolen he has 2 permanent negative levels until he can raise and get Elizabeth back.

The end of the backstory can lead directly to the start of the AP.

As I am rereading the thread it seems adding a role would be useful for sorting characters. Arcane support. I provide moving enemies and support spells. Need your weapons repaired? I am your man. Need to go swim across a strait? I am your man. Need massive overwhelming damage? Call someone else. Hope this gets accepting. Tried to balance for being undead by tossing on the negative levels and spell restriction selection.

Got the character made. I dont want the day one campaign trait. Can I take another drawback day one instead? I took the one already granted to get my second trait.

Just want something to balance the whole undead thing. I am thinking lovesick with Elizabeth being the target. It is pretty much a permanent debuff until we are real high level.

@ DM waz up?:

It's coming together. But I have a few questions:

1. How do you feel about the greatclub being considered a simple weapon instead of martial?

2. As an oracle I get Diplomacy as a class skill, but I feel as a 'primitive' that intimidate might be a better fit. How would you feel about swapping the two, so Intimidate is in class but not Diplomacy?

3. The Wood Bond revelation gives me a +1 bonus to attacks with wood weapons. How do you feel about this ability also giving me a +1 to craft (carpentry)? Strangely, the wood mystery offers nothing that would assist in working with wood.

Could i take the major drawback combat disrupted casting without the bonus feat? Would probably help balance being undead.
