Sunset nods her head in thanks at Thomas' words and acknowledgment.

"Aye, but tha' ticklin' such information out'a him? That's somat I be leery about." She sighs. "Perchance might a bod know some one who's persuasions match those of our guest in'a hole?" She asks of Thomas.

"Some... 'professional' who's a way with bein' all beguilin', like?" She offers a shrug. "Some times? Ye fight fire with fire, no?"

"Someone," Asta says as she steeples her fingers and looks innocently at the ceiling, "might suggest to the lickspittle in our dungeons that the only way he'll ever see sunlight and get to hear the sound of his own voice again is to tell us the truth of his backing and intentions here, and then get out of our country as fast as his own two feet can carry him, with the understanding he'll be fed alive to the pigs if he ever shows his face 'round here again. Of course, as the queen around these parts I couldn't possibly suggest such a thing."

Torod rises from sitting and, unless stopped, will do just that thing. On his way out, Torod will take parchment, pen, and ink so he does not have to suffer the screeching sounds that come from the jagged hole in the face of that goblin turd. He will stop at the door. "Coming, Kressle? Don't forget your axe."

The many puns, slogans and threats rankled her good sense. Her once rigid tail now flicked with growing irritation. At Sir Thomas's comment about the River Laws she was about to speak but instead she kept her mouth shut. Again, it was happening all over again, she knew this wasn't the place and speaking to the arrogant did nothing before. Choosing a different alternative she took the low road.

She turns and bows to Asta, bowing deeply. "Please excuse me my Queen, this sort of council is beyond my abilities. I will be in the training yard if you need me." It pained her to move away from Asta but her mind was firm.

Spoiler:
I cannot bear this anymore, if I stand for something just I will only alienate Sir Thomas. Just like we did with... It doesn't matter.
He left us.

With that she turns and leaves the chamber. She'd rather spend her time with the people, rebuild their trust but instead. She stood in the training yard just outside the castle, sword in hand and performed powerful swings with her large sword in the rain.

Sunset listens and watches. At Torod's picking up of Lady Asta's mantle she does naught but sigh a little. Though as they walk past she does offer them a nod,

"Ye can at least be canny enough ta' remember which of ye be tha' 'Good' guard an' witch of ye be tha' 'Bad', aye?" She offers the pair a smile. Though upon noticing Seraph's state her frown returns, deeper this time. With a glance and nod to Asta she picks up her hat, takes a smoulder stick out of her pocket and follows the fighter out.

Happy to have a conversation in spoilers and what not since the other two are doing a different sort of character development in the cellar together.

Kressle grabs her ax and follows Torod down to the dungeon where Grigori is being keep. No one stops Thomas from following Torod and Kressle.

In the dungeon a guard opens the door to let the Torod and friends into the dark cell where Grigori is being kept. They find a thinner man with chained arms and legs with a hood over his head and some sort of gag tied securely about his head. He turns towards where he hears someone enter and muffled voice "Mumm Mu Muumumu Mmummum Mu Umm Ummumum."

Sunset / Training Yard:

The hay built training dummy was ragged, wet by rain and well worn from hours of drill exercises being performed on it. Seraph wasn't bothered by it or the rain as she drew her large blade. Her muscles flared with aggravation and she used the flat of the blade to batter the dummy like a doll.

Despite her clothing getting muddy she didn't stop, back and forth she swung the blade smashing the dummy from side to side. She had no other outlet for her frustration, no other recourse but training.

Thomas does not know Torod, but he sees the anger in Torod's eyes. "As long as you understand that if he does not give you the information, we kill him. If he does, he will be exiled, given an escort to the edge of the kingdom, given a full waterskin, three days of food, a blanket, and his life." Torod gives Thomas the writing materials. "He is to remain absolutely silent. If we hear him, we'll assume he has ensorcelled you and respond accordingly."

Thomas nods and takes some paper and quill and an inkwell before entering the cell, his own personal guard flanking him. He removes the mans hood and, before he touches the gag, he says "So, my name is Sir Thomas of House Lebeda. I am here to ask you a few questions. My friends with the axes outside the cell have set a few ground rules for our discussion, namely you are not allowed to make a sound, except for the scrawling of quill to paper. Is that understood?"

Seraph works out in the yard as Sunset watches.

Asta meets with Imiria in private talking about the remains of the mite army, apprentices and the network. Imiria comments ,"Without the Mites the mindless vermin that made up their army should return to where ever they where before. The apprentices are doing well, one even evil eyed a squirrel the other day, but with the band on using magic on others their progress will be slowed. As for the network, due to the mite war it took some damage, but I have been recruiting. I have one of the maids at the Inn, would you like me to have her check Sir Thomas's room?"

Meanwhile in the dungeon:
Torod and Kreisler wait outside the dark cell as Thomas with his personal guard explains the rules to the bound and gagged prisoner. He nod's his head in understanding.

Sunset / The Training Yard:

She hefts her blade, laying the flat against her shoulder and letting the rain run down the length and across her hand on the hilt. "Tense... I wish... i'm frustrated Sunset." She Lifted the blade off her shoulder and pointed it skyward. "There is a Law of the Land and everytime I mention it someone has to s%@$ on it. Such arrogance, only an Abadarian would display. Laws don't make a kingdom, its people do..."

She wields the blade one handed, splitting the dummy's head in a single blow and splattering mud as she used all the might she had to split it. Her arm ached but it was a good pain. "What Grigori did is possibly covered under a law that exists, but it's like dealing with Doran all over again. So better to shut my mouth, like a good soldier." She yanks her sword out of the dummy.

"We arrested him and now Grigori is a hero. The voice of the people... And we threaten to feed him to pigs? The simmering anger dripped from her tongue as she spoke.

"Even if it is in jest to the Lebedian gossling, it makes me feel like a brothel whore. Dirty and without honor, which will be his first impression of us. Wonderful." She hacks the dummy in the side, hitting so hard again that the blade is stuck firmly in the dummy. The echoing crack easily heard as she grunted in disappointment. "This isn't how I envisioned helping the people..."

A tiny, tiny muscle under Asta's left eye twitches. Otherwise, her expression is one of cool composure.

"Your 'permanent record'. If I had an office, I am fairly sure the little sign on the door would say 'QUEEN', not 'schoolmarm'."

The Witch lets that sink in for a moment while she looks the guard right in the eye and her fingers drum on the armrest of her chair.

"You were all warned," she says, her eyes sweeping the prison guards. "Warned explicitly. Grigori was a dangerous prisoner, and he is now an enemy on the loose. One of your colleagues suddenly disappeared, and you. Did. Not. Notice."

Asta's index finger taps the armrest of her chair, punctuating each word.

"Now," she says, "if I were the monster that lying cur made me out to be, I would say something like 'You have failed me', and order something horrible to be done to you."

She lets that sink in as well, her eyes moving from guard to guard, then glancing at the baskets.

"Aren't you lucky that I'm not," she continues. "Gentlemen, let this be your wakeup call. You have allowed a foreign provocateur to escape, and I will tolerate no more mistakes! From this day forward, you are going to be the most vigilant and careful guards on Avistan, or you will be fired on the spot without a reference! From here on in, you will always work in pairs while on duty. Is that clear?"

Asta waits for a reply before she speaks on: "As matters stand, I am going to dock your pay for every day that Grigori has been out of the cells. You."
The Witch's finger points squarely at the fool who let Grigori sucker him into his cell.
"You were more than likely ensorcelled. I do not blame you for that. But I also do not feel comfortable leaving you where you are. There are other job openings at this castle, and I suggest you take one of them. My apprentices can use a volunteer to practice their spells on - the pay will be the same, and you are free to refuse any spell that frightens you. You will need to give a formal and written consent. Alternatively, there is a position of personal security for which I need someone. You'd probably be perfect for it, and the work would allow you to work above ground."*

Once the guards are dealt with and the Council is reconvened, Asta rattles off a series of proposals.
"Grigori has slipped away. We can't help that now. I suggest we put a price on his head. I will personally pay one hundred gold for his head, separated from the rest of his body. Flyers to be posted everywhere in the kingdom."

"With the Mites gone, we need a different way to contact the Fey Queen, which Grubble had promised to do. We should contact Perlavish and Tyg-Titter-Tut as quickly as possible. If they're interested, they can take over the Mites' noble seat."

"We need to fill the position Justinian has left vacant as quickly as possible. Do we have any candidates with a firm grounding in diplomacy available to us?"

Sir Thomas's news is not taken well by Seraph. Whose last blow demolishes the training dummy completely. Leaving a shattered stump as she sheathes her sword, the fury she felt was barely held in check. Though her eyes now swam in the dark red of her former battle fury.

She had failed.

She nods to Sir Thomas in wordless thanks, she couldn't hold anyone but herself for just following along with all of it. Her eyes were still glowing red when she entered the council chamber and when Asta started to berate the soldiers she raised her hand. "If I may my Queen. I accept full responsibility for the failure of those under my command. Though they followed what I asked them, I didn't detail that the prisoner was not to be allowed to speak or the number of guards to avoid this situation. However their lack of accounting shows gross negligence in my training regime, I will correct this and from now on..." The look she gave the guardsmen, all of them would turn most men's bowels to water. ... the punishment for failure will be well known."

She turns to them, stepping up until she is literally in their faces. []"It seems that the war has made me Lax on my soldiers... This will be corrected."[/b] At Sunset's urging she forestalls further punishments on the soldiers, allowing the Magister to have her say.

The Bounty Seraph's eyes still held a deep red glow as she spoke, though it was fading now as the initial anger was starting to wear off. "I'd suggest the bounty be for his capture instead, we don't need the people thinking him some type of fantasy folk hero. Now, that he escaped from prison, ensorcelled castle guards and is on the run he is a criminal. Make it 250 gp and to be taken alive, so he may stand trial as we had previously decreed." She paused before adding. "Now, are we certain the other prisoners are still here?" She directs this question at the remaining Guardsmen, directing them to go and Check. "Also check the storage rooms and the treasury to see if Grigori recovered his personal affects before fleeing. Do it now."

Contacting the Fey

"We could return to the forest where we met them and try to find them. Though... I doubt they will want something so official. They strike me as very... free-spirited and flighty. Regardless..." She bows. "... We can try and convince them." This Fey Queen buisness was... disturbing... to her to say the least.

The New Diplomat

She waves an arm to Sir Thomas in regards to Asta's decree. "I believe Sir Thomas will make a perfect fit as Ambassador (Grand Diplomat?). He has shown spirited initiative and resourcefulness to come to these lands of his own accord. He made himself available at a moment's notice despite the atrocious weather conditions and even assisted in a personal matter involving less reputable characters. I see no other clear candidate for the position that comes close to his accolades and a line of communication to house Lebada would be of great value to the kingdom." She is brutally honest, she had no reason to hide why she voted for him or how she felt.

She turns to Sir Thomas, the color of her eyes returning as her rage was not directed at him but herself. She spoke with a firm voice. "Seeing as I want an honest relationship from the start I will say this. Though I disagree with your quick discounting of the River Laws, that doesn't mean you are not suited to the position as it is expected we will not see eye to eye on every subject. It is my hope that you will not openly combat or discount our values in this kingdom when you are elected to office without good reason and I promise never to do the same." With that she offers to shake his hand, hoping to cement her vote of confidence in him.

After the guards presentation and dressing down Sunset's demeanour has lost its cheerful glow. Now replaced by a frown Sunset walks over to the guard at the centre of every one's ire, reaches out and shakes the fellow's hand.

"I'm thinkin' of startin' up a force ta' help defend tha' place. Ye be more'n welcome ta' join up should ye feel that way inclined." She offers with a nod before turning and mounting the steps of Lady Asta's throne. Stopping upon the top most step and thence addressing the assembled crowd.

"There's bin a wrong done an' I, fer one, am steppin' forwards ta' take tha' blame." She begins in a clear and loud voice to every one assembled before looking towards her fellow leaders.

"We knew Grigori were a potent force fer strife. We knew tha' feller were recoursefull, wily an' down right na'er do well." Sunset's blue eyes meet her fellow senoir companions levely.

"So leavin' such a threat under naught but tha' watchful eyes of these folk who, lets be above board about it, don't know tha' first thing about handlin' powerful magic. If'n they did? They'd be teachin' folks about it an' not doin' somat else, right?" She smiles to the guards, "I am bein' tha' first one ta' admit. It weren't quite tha' right thing ta' do. What, with little enough guidelines an' little enough warning to ye, we were bein' called off ta' deal with that other problem." Sunset stands tall as she walks down the steps. Stopping half way down and being closer to the assembled people.

"So! As Magister, I do appologize fer me lapse in judgment." She pauses now as she marshals her thoughts and scratches her head,

"Though there's not much I can be offerin' currently about tha' matter other than ta' say I'll be workin' right hard at bein' better about things when there comes a 'Next time'." She sighs and looks to Torod and Seraph.

"You, Mates, have right tempers. Now, don't get me wrong," She holds out her hands to forestall their replies, "Passion be a good thing. But your's needs ta' be more focused. More channeled. Ye don't whip tha' critter whut's bin abused. Ye deal with that what done tha' abusin'." She patiently waits for any responces.

(Later)

(^_^)

"Well! That annoyin' resolved itself right nice, hey?" She claps her hands, "Right! Who we got whut can make up wanted posters right quick? We've a escaped, dangerous and powerful felon on'a run. We need ta' put out tha' warnings an' rewards. How much should we post fer Grigori? 2000 alive? 500 dead?" She asks/sugests.

"If'n we make it worth while fer people ta' try an' find him... it'll make it more likely he'll keep runnin', hey?"

Thomas nods to Lady Starsky at her nomination. Foots in the door...

When she speaks to him directly and offers her hand, he returns the shake. "It's not that I discount or discredit them, my lady, particularly if being another of the River Kingdoms is your goal as a nation. But all the true, larger nations of Avistan have codified their own laws, and if Stagland will eventually need to focus on a similar task. Even rebel states like Nirmathas in the west."

"But, should my presence amongst the leadership here be desired, I assure you, by Ragathiel's blazing sword, that our values will be aligned," he adds as he clasps his holy symbol.

Searching the castle and town, turns up no sign of Grigori. It is discovered that Grigori managed to recover his gear before escaping as well.

You figure Grigori skipped town for now, but you have a feeling he may be back.

For now there are matters of state to see to.

She had little to add during the rest of the council meeting. Only more things she needed to do, especially in regard to rebuilding their reputation post Grigori's damaging influences. Which she does with smooth diplomacy and a honeyed tongue.

Diplomacy - Rebuilding trust with the public: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26

To her Grigori was a criminal. On the run from justice and no better then the two men whose trial came all too soon as well. She had no love for secrets and, unless absolutely forbidden by Asta, shared openly what they did to ensure a swift end to the war. Up to Asta if the why we paid the Kobolds comes out or not. I don't think it's worth keeping secret but again Seraph shares nothing to heavy unless Asta agrees to it. She emphasizes the gains from the war. The kobolds mines being one of them and the elimination of the kobold/mite border meant more opportunities for farming lands to be developed in the eastern edge of the kingdom.

She looked for the silver lining amid the grief of loss...

However the loss of Kundal weighed heavily on her, as well as the losses to the militia during the mite skirmish. She spent part of her time working with the militia, improving their efficiency and using the various monster bits she had collected to make them more knowledgable. It was a pity none of the giant ants were taken alive, an excellent training resource lost with stroke of blade.

D20 roll, unchanged: 1d20 ⇒ 10
Kingdom aid roll (stability): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

Asta spends time trying to restore the stability of her queendom. She talks to her apprentices after lessons. She talks to the castle guards and servants. She talks to the Clerics who have opted to stay. When out and about in Greenheart, she talks to anyone who approaches her.
To all, she freely tells of everything that was done to stop the Mite's threat, of everything she decided to do to win the war - but perhaps not of the exact phrasing of the security measures she put into place around Grigori before the party left to face Grubble.

"We have lost much, but we have also gained. The Mites' and the Sootscales' territory now fall to us. We must fill the gap, must make the land strong and unified against all future threats. And yes, we must improve our defences! I will be accepting people who want to train to join the Outriders, and I am always eager to instruct new apprentices. Forget the insurgent Grigori's lies; my students are learning to master magic so they may heal and protect you. Visitors to my lessons are welcome, so come see for yourselves what I teach."

It's too early yet for another round of improving the reputation of Arshea, right? I'd like to recommend we invest in watchtowers and make such improvements to the city walls as we need. And yes, we should claim the Kobolds' and Mites' hexes post-haste.

When she has a moment to herself, Asta writes letters to the Sootscale Kobolds and dispatches ravens to deliver them and, perhaps, bring back answers. She offers to set up a kind of correspondence school for the Kobold Witchlings, so she might guide and encourage their development further, even if it's at a distance.

Assuming I am appointed Grand Diplomat.

D20 Roll: 1d20 ⇒ 7
Diplomacy Aid: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

Thomas spends the following month or so doing his role as Diplomat with great zeal. He sends out missives to bolster morale and public opinion of the leadership of Stagland. He focuses purely on the positive, like the victory over the mites, the growth of the nation's holdings, the development of Greenheart, and things of that nature. He runs them all by Queen Asia before posting any fliers or sending out emissaries, explaining that it would be best to provide other news topics in order to remove fuel from the flames of the "Grigori Situation."

Seraph, Prof(soldier) is one of the checks that can be used to aid stability

kingdom building Upkeep Phase

With the Grand Diplomat office vacant the kingdom's stability is reduced (-3 stat bonus & -2 vacancy penalty). The New Grand Diplomat dosn't kick in until the Edict Phase after the Upkeep Phase.

Currently the Stability check is 25 vs a DC28. This is with Asta, Seraph and Thomas Aid counted. Which increases unrest by 1. (Baring more aid checks)

The Royal enforcer can reduce the unrest by 1, but it requires a loyalty check to avoid a -1 loyalty for the rest of the month. roll +17-8=?? Vs DC28. (Effectively a nat 20)
Does Asta want the Royal enforcer to do so???

Consumption is zero, so the kingdom is able to feed itself and maintain itself.

Next would be the Edic Phase. Treasury is at 20 BP

Thomas Lebeda becomes the Grandiplomat and the stability increases (+3 stat bonus & +2 vacancy penalty removed.)

Claim any Hexs???

Any Terrain Improvements???

Build a housing???

Build a building???

Next is Income Phase.

Econ check is currently (10+19-8)/3 = 7 BP.

Asta suggest making the kingdom whole (claim hex??). Build watchtower, city wall.
Any others suggestions??

Council Meeting for Kingdom Advancement

Claiming a Hex

"Area D10 must be reclaimed so the kingdom is united again, from there I suggest we claim upto the Temple of the Elk for positive morale and then do as Asta has asked. Claiming the Kobold and Mite lands quickly for future expansion. But the continued break in supply lines will add more stress to the kingdom..."[/b] They had enough farms and Olegton hadn't broken off just yet, but nothing was for certain if they didn't move quickly post war.

Reclaim D10 (Regain use of previously constructed Gold Mine(?)) -1 Bp

Terrain Improvements

"Building a Watchtower in D10 may help deter attackers and give a safe supply base for patrols, caravans and such. Its good halfway point for the kingdom as well." They still had the trolls to worry about too.

Build a Watchtower @ D10 (Stability +1, Defense +2; Unrest decreases by 1) Cost: -12 BP

"Also its about time we allowed a farm to be constructed on the outskirts of Greenhart. It's vital we avoid being cut off from our farms in the future and one close to the capital will provide essential's in case of conflict."

Farm (-2 from consumption) Cost -2 BP

Build Housing/Building

"We need more housing for the return of settlers from up north, I also suggest next month we consider the construction of an Orphanage for those whose parents didn't return from the Mines or the Militia. A show to the public that we will not abandon our own and it should help with the current unrest..." It went without saying she would see if her order could expand their control, aiding in running the Bath House and a future Orphanage would do well for the reputation as a whole. She would have to ensure it was built as close to the Bathhouse as possible. The Order of the Swan had much work to do but at least the children could bathe for free. Expanding their influence made her smile, she'd make a foothold in Greenhart that would last long after she was gone...

Housing (-1 Unrest) Cost: -3 BP

Total Cost -19 BP out of 20
Total Treasury by months end 8 BP

Total Gains:
-2 unrest
-2 BP consumption
(Gold Mine Bonus? Or does it need Repaired?)
+2 Defense
+1 Stability

”I agree with General Starksky,” Thomas says as he leans over the map, studying it intently. ”You will need to not only reunite the kingdom, but reclaim and reinforce your supply lines. Reclaiming the territory here, the area you have marked as D10, is the most efficient and rewarding choice.”

Actually its only 18 BP my miscalc there, so 9 BP for next month,
enough for a Shrine and another Hex.

Seraph nods at Sir Thomas, glad that he too saw that they had little choice this month. She'd waver on the Watch Tower and Housing, especially if someone had a better idea.
