Near the edges of an ancient and powerful empire is world. The surface of this world offers nothing of interest. But within it much that has been forgotten has been preserved. And those inside have been here so long that they have forgotten there was ever any outside at all. This is the world of Agartha, protected from outside interference by strong magic.

Within this world sits an unassuming looking building with a small brass plaque on the side. Avalon Academy. A special school meant for training special students, children whose magical abilities need a little extra care, attention, and perhaps a rather large safety barrier between them and the rest of the world. At least until they learn to master those abilities.

Today is the first day of a new term and many new students are just arriving...

Hi everybody! *'Sima waves shyly*

Vakkler jumps. "Watch it, kid!" he snaps. "Running around like that will lead to fatalities!"

Nasima sort of ducks, chagrined, and immediately stops waving her hand and slowly pulls it back down to her side. She doesn't move anything except her eyes, which slowly scan back and forth to see if anyone spotted her faux pas. She gives a tight and embarrassed little smile as her cheeks flush.

Thunder can be heard in the distance.

The kobold glances towards the sound, and looks similarly abashed. He coughs. "Well, I suppose you're entitled to a little frivolity. Go on, wave and bounce as much as you like."
He slowly backs away.

'Sima's eyes go wide at the sound of thunder, especially since it's a gloriously sunny day outside. Oh no, not now, not HIM, not on the first day!
"hnnnnn...haaaaaaaa...hnnnnn...hhhaaaaaa" The teen closes her eyes and tucks her legs up into lotus position and begins breathing deeply in an effort to regain calm. If that was just some weather-kid or something pranking his friends I am gonna be SO embarrassed...

Ephebe squared her shoulders and took a deep breath. She had promised she would try. She tapped the new girl on the shoulder."I find that the cafeteria is a better place to meditate. There's this one spot nobody sits in cause Jimmy rigged the ventilation system for a prank and now nobody can fix it...well, they made the stink go away, but it still blows cold air right there....anyways, that's where I go when I need some alone time. So, you know, if you..uh, need to use it sometimes...that's uh, okay with me," she finished, suddenly staring at her feet and wishing she could just stop talking.

Nasima's eyes snap open. "Oh I wasn't...er..." well maybe i was meditating, good a word as any I guess that's a kind of 'deep thinking' or something i think right? "I don't wanna take your spot, I mean, that'ssuperniceofyou! Thank you! But...well if it's yours...uh...I'm Nasima by the way." Not knowing what else to do, and feeling completely stupid the whole while, 'Sima extends her hand. Shadows move on her chestnut skin like clouds over mountains, part of why she always wears sneakers, socks, pants, long-sleeve mock turtlenecks with arm warmers underneath to help cover her hands, and has her cloud-white hair in her face. Unfortunately her lineage means that various winds are constantly blowing her hair all over the place, but she can mostly keep it in her face if she concentrates.

"I'm from the Air plane." She winces. oh and that didn't sound moronic at all "I mean, not AN airplane, but the Plane of Air. Sort of an intersection of it really, but, uh, but where are you from?"

Vakkler watches the exchange from a distance. "I aught to demand a raise..." he mutters.

A grey-robed kobold walks in, looking down at his papers...he is followed by a slightly larger individual, wearing a hooded cloak, packed to the hilt like a mule. He mumbles to himself with a confused look on his face...then notices others around him. He strightens up a bit, clears his throat, then...

Draconic: Umm...excuse me. Does anyone know where the dorms are?

Vakkler clicks his tongue. He hisses a response.
Draconic:
"Do you know a less obscure tongue? I don't know where the dorms are, myself, but the others probably do. I don't know if they speak Draconic..."

resigned sigh
Draconic:
Understood...it's jsut that my common isn't that great

Vakkler smiles kindly.
Draconic:
"Don't worry, young one. You shall learn more of their crude tongue in time. In the meanwhile..."
"Excuse me," the history teacher says loudly. "Might someone point me towards the dormitories? I need to make certain we didn't overpay that exterminator."

A blond boy, apparently human, walks past reading a book about plumbingbe afraid, be very afraid and absently says in draconic,
"Down the hall, up the stairs, to your left."

He briefly looks up from his book and sizes up the new arrival and grins.

"Oh, this is gonna be fun. See ya round half pint."

Ephebe reached out and shook the new girl's hand. She chuckled a little as Nasima tried to explain where she was from. "No, it's alright, I got what you mean. There's not a lot of people here who would. Either an airplane or the plane of air. Not a lot of planar traveling going on. But my family is...how should I put this? Totaly freaks?" she said with a self-deprecating smile. "I'm Ephebe Sunwake, and it was a sincere offer, you know. You're welcome to use the spot in the cafeteria to calm down whenever you want. I have a feeling the wind isn't even going to bother you."

"Oh, and you asked where I was from didn't you? Yeah, I'm from right here. And by right here, I mean this is home. My parents are teachers here."

A group of girls walk past giggling and one of them throws a ball of sticky goo at Ephebe and it sticks to her hair. Ephebe sighed.

"Excuse me for a moment."

Same girls, same place, same action.
A group of girls walk past giggling and one of them throws a ball of sticky goo at Ephebe, but she ducks out of the way just in time and the good adheres to the wall. She glares at the girls who giggle more as the continue down the hallway.

Ephebe examined the goo. "Well, at least she found a good use for her failed alchemy lessons...."

Krays looks up at his visitor.
He hesitates a bit, then straightens and clears his throat.
"Oh! Umm...a...wrench? Is tool, no? What does one look as? I'm apology, my common is less good"

Krays looks relieved and relaxes a bit, as does H'Tor.

Draconic:
"Oh, good. I remember you giving instructions to the dorm to Mr. Vakkler, but he mentioned I should not rely so heavily on Draconic. Well met, Jiminy. I am called Krays, and this is H'Tor"

H'Tor bows slightly to Jiminy.
Draconic:
"I have some sorcerous blood in me, a present from my draconic blood, I'd imagine. I studied magic as well, you know, jsut to get a grasp on the theory of it. I don't ever cast it that way though."

He looks around his belongings, which seem pretty much jsut adventuring equipment, like he packed for a trip but was unsure of his destination.
Draconic:
"I do not believe I have any tools like the one you're looking for. I'm more a student than a crafter..."

Nasima's eyes get big as Ephebe ducks the stinky -- and sticky -- alchemical goo the other girl threw. Her face sort of crumples in an expression of confused distaste. "What's their problem?" she asks as the interlocutors giggle away down the hall.

:: Squeek squee squeeeek :: squeek squee squee-eek ::

The battered washpail trundles squeakily over to the goo-ball smeared wall. The call of its rusty and rattling wheel attracting Sinh's attention. He nods to Marra, "Excuse me, Miss." before following his free-range washpail.

Sinh eyes the goo ball briefly, before pulling three collapsible yellow signs from the storage bag strapped to the pail. He places them in a cordon around the gooey wall. Each one bears a grim warning:

    CAUTION!
    Wet Floor

The old janitor pulls a small spray bottle with a deft grab from the storage bag, spritzes the ball, and with a deft spin 'holsters' the spray bottle on his pants pocket. He kicks the pail to the wall as the goo-ball drops. Bullseye! He follows up with a final bandana swipe across the wall and stands back satisfied.

A cantrip later, the wall is dry and Sinh is putting away his warning signs.

@Ephebe: Nasima sighs. "Random jerkery. Great. Because we all don't have enough going on. Hey, you know..." she looks back at Ephebe "'Sunwake' is a...it's a real pretty name. What do your parents do? Oh, uh, and could you...could you show me where this spot is? In the Cafeteria? I'll bet you're right, that I can just bend the wind around me. I...I might even be able to leave it that way if it'll help you, I mean if the wind bugs you when you use it. The spot, that is."

Nasima shakes Taron's hand. "Is your hair really those colors?" she asks wondrously. "I'm usually the only one with white hair and it's such a hassle." There is a noticeable color difference between Taron's blonde-white hair and 'Sima's cloud-white hair, but the average observer could never be blamed for not being able to notice it. "It's nice to meet you, by the way."

A young man sits at a table with the parts of two guns spread out before him. His short black hair spiky. His supple fingers cleaning and reassembling both guns leaving two beautifully crafted weapons. The guns themselves look like oversized desert eagles made of adamantine with mithrial accents along their sides.

He stands up and slides both guns in their holsters with a flourish revealing 4 spare clips set along each leg for quick reloading hidden inside his red trench coat. His clothing beneath is a black sleeveless outfit with red stitching. Just before he slips on custom made sunglasses his strangely colored crimson eyes seem to glow.

"Isn't that nice if it were me I'd have tried to kill her for that." He comments as he walks up to Taron and everyone else. "Or at least injure her." He says with a small grin revealing his pointed fangs.

To Ephebe
::Right now you only have to deal with pranks. Word has gotten around that the wards aren't always fast enough to stop an attack. It's just a rumor, but people have already tried things much more dangerous than goo.::

Out loud
"Yes, this is the way my hair is. The white is my own, while the black I believe came from my father's side of the family, and the purple from my mother's. The streaks grow in randomly of course, and fade much the same."

Taron looks down the hallway in the direction Nala and her 'club of like-minded morons' went and shakes his head.

"You would think being in a place where lineage, appearance, and background aren't supposed to matter would make things easier. Bad habits die hard I guess."

The white tendrils swirl about her head, covering her face when she blushes and pulling back when she's recovered composure somewhat.

She then turns to Ephebe again. "...wait; did you say 'slip out of time'?"

Should anyone be interested a play-by-post possibility for those really wacky characters that you might not get a chance to play in the normal run of things.
It's a rules super light game based in the same world as Realms of Agartha (Here is the original Agartha thread for anyone who is interested. Not required reading, kinda different setting, but can give you a good feel for how rules light plays.), though it's not necessary to have read or even be remotely familiar with that thread. I'll gladly fill you in on the basics. Basically the action would be taking place in a school for magical youngsters. Think a mashup of Hogwarts and the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. Existing characters include weredragon triplets and a good-aligned demon. Power level starts in the mid to upper teens. This is really the beauty of rules almost free, it actually supports that without making you want to tear out hair trying to keep track of all the details. Cause sometimes its fun to play superheroes. :)
We do use dice rolls, but sparingly, and if you have a concept that isn't easily supported by existing rules we can help you cobble together something that works since really all you need is a basic idea that lets you know what to roll for attacks, saves, damage, etc. The focus is more on the shared storytelling aspect of the game.

Power level is mid to high teens. Loosely Pathfinder/3.5 based. The current thread has been going for a couple of months, but we've had a few players drop out, so need to fill a few slots.

In game it's about two weeks into the term, so you can choose to be a late transfer or easily say that you've been there all along and just hadn't interacted with the main story before.

Shadow Lodge

I don't have much to say, but this is an enjoyable game because everyone playing will get a chance to "DM" a story arc.

The awesome janitors and epic battles don't hurt neither. Oh, and we have a minotaur named Buttercup.

I'll echo my Board-mates here. I'm usually not as fond of rules-light, but this has worked very well for everyone in it.

As always, just my humble 2cp... :)

Rules light means don't sweat the numbers. Rule of cool wins over RAW every time. :)
All you need to know is your attack bonus, AC, saves, and maybe a few key skills, but really there's a lot of handwaving and it's okay to improvise. The focus of the game is on cooperative storytelling rather than crunch.
Feel free to take a look at the thread and read through a little bit of it if you want to see how it looks in play.

Let me give this a read. There is a good chance I will jump in. I like free form / no power play games.

There is a really good chance I will jump in if you will have me.

Yeah, go ahead and give it a read. Come up with a concept or two. We'd be happy to have you join us. :)

What do you want by way of a stat block or back story?

I think I will run with a human savant. Sorry but I really do not want to ready 3800 post so let’s just say he is late. If it will not work I can think more. The kid from Mercury Rising is about what I want to play.

As far as stat block goes, just have a basic concept of your ability scores (we use the handwaving point buy system), know your attack bonus, saves, AC, maybe a few key skills if you like. And watch your power level. Your concept sounds like it might be a bit weak as is. I don't want you to not have fun because you handicapped yourself too much.

You don't have to write me a book on backstory. Give me a synopsis and maybe a few key things that I can use to draw your character into the story. You can feel free to relate details (or not) as the story progresses.

Also:

Spoiler:
I'm not opposed to the concept, but as a personal favor I'm gonna have to ask you to tread lightly with this one. As the parent of an autistic child that is some emotionally charged territory for me. If done right, that is a concept that I can really respect and appreciate. Heck, that's one of the things I really love about the tv show Bones. It does an amazing job of showing an autistic person struggling to relate to the world around them without making it something to be pitied or being preachy. But if the character you have in mind is more of a caricature, I am not the person to do that around. Figured it was better to just be up-front and tell you that now.

To give you an idea of what she means by this, here is a list of current characters that I made just yesterday.

EDIT: I did not make all the characters yesterday, just the list. As you can see all of them are pretty crazy.
EDIT 2: Not all of these characters are mine, and those that are aren't always active.

Let's look at a list of characters(whose player's have posted recently and aren't leaving).

1. Krays(a gestalted Sorcerer/Oracle of Death. Is Death's "minion")
2. Ruji(actual strength unknown, has the illusionary of a half-fiendish dire tiger)
3. Vakkler(a crazed kobold who uses crossbows, siege weaponry, and oozes)
4. Aananada Sunwake(a were-dragon, capable martial artist, and more)
5. The Sunwake Trio(all were-dragons. One's a time-traveling agent for Krons, one is a reality warper prone to pranks, and the other is so emotionally unstable that his feelings amplify his psychic abilities)
6. Headmaster Ryo(A High Seer, one of the strongest magical/psychic people in Agartha, and a Cardcaster)
7. Lysander Sandwalker(A Hunter that doesn't seem to care about Ephebe as long as she and the rest of her family stays away from his cousins)
8. Tamrin Sunwake(Arcane Gunslinger extraordinaire, ex-leader of a resistance group that is trying to over a Universal Empirerun by Dragons)
9. Feiri(a firebird that used to live in the sun. Also an evoker.)
10. Fei(monk from another realm, turns kinetic energy into a deadly weapon which he has no control over)
11. Kamenwati(a half-fiend that has training as an assassin, a stormborn sorcerer, and part of a popular band)
12. Ryo's Children(A color mage and his younger siblings, which are fraternal twins that seems to be able to find anything no matter how well it's hidden. Protected fiercely by Ryo and Lysander)
13. Keaton Bloodfang(a vampire that no longer drinks blood)
14. Meantioned but not seen yet: Adsila(a plant mage, possible the strongest in Agartha), Ormarr(a half-orc with more than his share of snake-based magic)

Yes, this is definitely the place to try out those crazy character concepts that wouldn't work anywhere else. :)
There are a few more characters that aren't on that list, but they are the ones who are on hiatus or are only posting occasionally.

Two gargoyles sat at the bar, talking as they attempted to drown their sorrows in copious amounts of ale.

"Disgraceful, that's what it is, Bert," the first gargoyle opined mournfully.

"Got that right, 'Arry," said the second one. "Time was folks was honored to get an invite to be attending the Avalon Academy. Ask a body in they would, maybe even give ye a bite to eat or suchlike while they asked all their bloody questions."

"Yer, and now ye ain't barely able t' get the words out afore they slam the door in yer face. If I ever get my hands on the fellows what's been spreading these rumors about it being dangerous there, well..."

Just tell me if you think this will work or if you want me to change anything.

Char Info:

True Name: Unknown
Given Name: Tom
Class: Technically Summoner
Race: Assumedly Human
Alignment: Neutral
Age: ??
Height: 4’4’’
Weight: 77lb

Description:
Tom looks like a basic young boy. He has common slacks and a light blue tunic. He has vivid green eyes and a wide happy smile on his face. He has no shoes but his feet seem to look rugged.

Personality:
Tom is extremely inquisitive, but also seemingly lost. Since the point in time when he was first spotted he has not said a single word to anyone. He does seem to speak, but the word are not in any known language, nor consistent. He really does not pay all that much attention to his surroundings, which really causes issues due to the fact he reacts somewhat aggressive to fear.

Tom has an innate ability to create small living creatures seemingly at will. This ability most includes very small things like butterflies, spiders, or other bugs. Aside from the bugs he also seems to really like colorful fish and flowers.

He really does not have any desire to follow the standard structure of society. Due to the fact he can substance himself with food, water, and shelter the traditional structure of society is irrelevant. If given simply motivation he will follow others due to his inquisitive tendencies. Interesting creatures, people, or things tend to make him happy.

Back-story:

Tom was found walking down the middle of the road about 6 months ago. Before that time he had never been seen.
A few different vastly intelligent creatures have spent some time attempting to understand what Tom really is, but no one is really sure. The current competing options range from sentient life force, to lost construct. Everyone has concluded he looks like a young boy, but he most certainly is not one.

The power that be decided to send Tom to the Avalon Academy

Well I find this interesting I would need levels at least, I dont like being all powerful or having a slanted advantage. Kinda takes away from the point to me. Characters need a goal/purpose and gaining levels, money, inflence, etc etc is the means and so the adventure. I like being able to play pretty much anything but if their is nothing at the end or even the illusion of an end then just does not seem fun. How can characters evolve or even grow with out the real threat of failure at least if not death.

But then again I may not know what I am talking about so if you can clear this up for me then please do.

Shadow Lodge

It is a school that helps you gain control of any abilities you may have, which means the goal is to gain enough control to graduate.

Seems like very few people have that lack of control though..

VonGonda wrote:

It sounds like a solid concept, but I have two concerns.

The first one I've already mentioned is power level. Now, I will say this, if you start and then discover that you're way too weak, you can always have your characters powers evolve as he gains more control over them, bringing in more powerful abilities.
The second is how is this kid going to relate to or even notice the other students? He doesn't have to be socially skilled, but I'd hate for the plot to always be passing him by. What are his points of interest? His obsession if you will. There's usually something.

There is threat of danger/failure/occasionally even death. But the goal/purpose is generally more story driven rather than levels, money, etc. Abilities can and do develop over time, and as DB3 said, that's the real purpose of the school. To help the students gain control of and develop their powers. I'd suggest maybe reading the first page or two of the thread to get a feel for how things play out. There are definitely rivalries, enemies to defeat, long-term goals and so on. And trust me, while the characters are powerful, there are plenty of things out there that are more powerful than they are.

Well, you guys had your weapons...not making that better am I?

ONE: He seems to weak.

He reacts somewhat aggressive to fear.

This would be the situation when he spontaneous summons everything in his power to stay safe. He can do more than just play with butterflies.

TWO: Get into the game

Interesting creatures, people, or things tend to make him happy.

I assume I will find something about the other players that will fall into this category. After I get him going, and get a better idea of the other players I will hook him into the plot.

What are his points of interest?
Life

He is more or less the embodied sprite of a forest.

VonGonda wrote:

Okay, cool, that gives me something to work with.

When you say that he is interested in life do you mean that he likes to observe other creatures' behavior? or more like biological processes? outward appearances? It sounds like he and EJ, the recently 'born' intelligent ooze, might have some interesting interaction should their paths ever cross. :)

When you say that he is interested in life do you mean that he likes to observe other creatures' behavior? or more like biological processes? outward appearances?

At this time he does not understand what he is, but he likes to create life, and down the road the stuff he calls forth will start lasting longer and longer until it is permanent.

In time he will understand what he is and more than likely start a new forest. When he starts a new forest he will no longer exist as a humanoid.

Here are a few questions of reflection?

What are the emotions of a tree when the morning sun comes over the horizon?

What is the first thing a seedling would say when it eclipses the crust of the earth?

Why does a duckling or other bird work so hard to free itself of the shell?

Does a spring rain drop speak with the plants as it falls to the earth?

Does a seed try to find the best soil?

Does my house plant get upset when I turn it away from the window?

Adsila is going to love you. :)

I assume that means I can join the game thread. I will keep any eye open to see the best time to join.

So would I be able to make a character with some interesting Templates?

I'll need to think about it, but Ive always got some interesting ideas for that or maybe just an interesting personality to play. Halfling wizard (maybe SUmmoner) with a napoleon complex comes to mind.

Edit: Halfling wizard with a napoleon complex who was cursed with a permanent reduce person effect. lol!

Also, I love that character idea. You don't want to know how many times I watched/read the Borrowers when I was a kid....in other words I think that character sounds like a ton of fun. :)

I GOT IT! Permanently reduced halfling with a Napoleon complex who is a master summoner. He can't kick your a$$, but he can summon something to do the job for him. LOL Maybe with a template or two.

Shadow Lodge

He can ride around on Ruji! XD

The "young" template will take him down a size category. Apply the "Advanced" template after that for the Napoleon Complex.

Both of you guys can head over to the discussion thread if you like to iron out details. As you can tell we get a bit quiet on the weekends, but now it's Monday and things are back in full swing. :)

I do not see the discussion thread. I see the game thread but that is all.

I think I will just jump into the garden that seems like a perfectly good location unless you have other plans of introduction.

Avalon's Discussion Thread

Of course, being in the garden works perfectly. Taron did say he had found some more people to join in the fun.

Taron: "I though you invited him!"
Kamenwati: "No, I thought you did!"

I like it. :)

Feel free to hop on over to the discussion thread to iron out details, ask questions, and figure out how you want to make your entrance if you would like to join the game. There's a link a couple of posts up. You'll need to give her a couple more levels, but don't see any other immediate problems. The anti-dragon sentiments in Agartha don't extend to the miniature variety.

Liberty's Edge

Are there gods and goddesses in this world. I've an idea for a centaur cleric of Shelyn or her counterpart. :)

stardust wrote:

Yes there are. Any that you like. Thus far most of the gods that we've used are a bit more well, made up on the spot, to be honest, but that doesn't mean you can't worship a more established deity. It sounds like a good concept. Are you thinking you'd like to be a student or a teacher?

Please do not be intimidated by the wall of text near the end there. One of the other players has a cool but very complicated concept, and we're still working some of the bugs out. Sometimes when we have to just make up rules to fit a concept they don't work exactly right the first time and have to be adjusted a bit first.

Also, I'm going to be working on a quick primer of everything you need to know about Agartha this weekend, so hopefully that will make it easier for newbies to catch up and figure out what's going on.

Bloodline Arcana Whenever you cast a spell of the compulsion subschool, increase the spell's DC by +2.
Cantrips You learn a number of cantrips, or 0-level spells. These spells are cast like any other spells, but they do not consume any slots and may be used again.
Dragon Traits (Ex) Dragons have Immunity to magic sleep effects and paralysis effects. Dragons breathe, eat, and sleep.
Fey Bloodline The capricious nature of the fey runs in your family due to some intermingling of fey blood or magic. This tends to make you more emotional than most, prone to bouts of extreme joy and rage.
Fey Magic (Su) You may reroll any caster level check made to overcome spell resistance. You must decide to use this ability before the results are revealed. You must take the second result, even if it is worse. You can use this ability at will.
Fleeting Glance (Su) You can turn invisible for 15 rounds per day. This ability functions as greater invisibility. These rounds need not be consecutive.
Immunity to Magical Sleep (Ex) You are never subject to magic sleep effects.
Immunity to Paralysis (Ex) You can never be paralyzed.
Laughing Touch (Su) You can cause a creature to burst out laughing for 1 round as a melee touch attack. A laughing creature can only take a move action and can defend itself normally. Once a creature has been affected by laughing touch, it is immune to its effects for 1 day. You can use this ability 7 times a day.
Poison (Ex) Sting-injury; save Fort DC 14; frequency 1/minute for 10 minutes; effect sleep for 1 minute; cure 1 save.
Telepathy (Su) You can mentally communicate with any other creature within 60 feet that has a language. It is possible to address multiple creatures at once telepathically, although maintaining a telepathic conversation with more than one creature at a time is just as difficult as simultaneously speaking and listening to multiple people at the same time.
Woodland Stride (Ex) You can move through any sort of undergrowth (such as natural thorns, briars, overgrown areas, and similar terrain) at your normal speed and without taking damage or suffering any other impairment. Thorns, briars, and overgrown areas that have been magically manipulated to impede motion, however, still affect you.
