Shards of the Titanswar

Game Master EldonG

The ruined monastery is exactly one of those places parents warn their children about. I wonder why...

The clan (or tribe, or whatever the most immediate structural unit he was a part of was called) had berserkers, proper barbarians with the rage ability, but in his backstory his bloodrage was basically unique among the people he knew... if that's ok with you?

if you recall from his background, he couldn't whip himself into the frenzy other berserkers could (because he's lawful) but he learned to tap into a different sort of fury that sprang like magic from some mystic source deep inside him...

Liberty's Edge

Auric:
That works for me...and there are berserkers (standard barbarians) under Harald that revere him...and likely plenty of bloodragers, too...but there is a pretty well known group of bloodragers that are well known for their brutality. They don't approve of his reluctance to challenge the middle kingdoms directly.

He's known to have a feud with the Iron Lord, but its more idealogical than anything. The Iron Lord is the hand of the god of law and knowledge, and one of the most feared swordsmen known.

"Baldek. I'm... Yeah. Baldek."

Liberty's Edge

Baldek:
The axe feels good in your hands, by the way - it feels, for lack of a better word, nimble. There's something else, though. It's - for lack of a better word - eager. It may be a bit unnerving, but I'll leave that up to you.

Liberty's Edge

Sakura:
The feeling is now getting worse. Your skin crawls. Someone or something is watching you.

Liberty's Edge

Reiko:
You don't know what it is, but out of nowhere, you hear your heartbeat - then another - then another still. You lose track of how many you hear, pretty quickly, as they blur together...ant then slowly, the sounds subside.

"МожетКамень Сторож благосклонно на вас , брат ." Auric says to Baldek.

Dwarven:
"May the Stone Watchman look favorably on you, brother."

As he speaks he raises his fingertips to his forehead then lowers his hand, palm up, in front of him, in a motion that any familiar with dwarven priests have likely seen before.

"The way you handle that axe, I take it you are a warrior of some type as well? How is it that a dwarven warrior finds himself on the eve of battle without any armor?" His question has no sign of mockery... it seems not only earnest but even concerned.

The sheriff suddenly stretches, and looks around at everyone. I'd suggest some rest before this all goes down tonight. I'm gonna be hidden behind the barricade at the road - I'm pretty sure I can take one down pretty quick, iffn' I get the jump on 'em.

With that, he heads for the door.

I got the youngbloods on duty now, but the old hands'll be takin' over later.

Baldek glares at Auric; a plethora of emotions pouring along the sides of his face and up his nose, each resting a mere instant on his eyebrows, though he only says flatly: "You could say that."

A dwarf-fan. Just my luck...

Sakuro waited until the Sheriff was gone, then looked at the others and put her hands on the table. "Aya. Reiko. We have a problem, and I think magic is involved." the girl said, her voice far more serious than it had been before. The excited, magic-crazed personality was gone, replaced by a much more sensible girl. "I've had a constant feeling of observation for some time now, and it's getting worse. I think it's important enough that we need to figure out what it is, right now, and take care of it as soon as possible. Three heads are much better than one for this."

Female Elf Wizard

Aya casts Detect Magic and looks at Sakuro for any unusual auras.
Alyra, do you sense anything?

Liberty's Edge

Aya:
There is a very strange necromantic aura that seems to fade in and out - when it becomes clear for a moment, the intensity is almost blinding!

Reiko leans in close as well.
Indeed. Something just happened to me. I could hear every heartbeat in this building for a few moments, like a wave crashing over me. It has subsided, but something is not normal. Aya, can you detect anything? How long have you had that feeling Sakuro?

Alyra concentrates for a few seconds, then -

Something there - like a - ghost? AAAH! BLINDING! What IS it?

Alyra looks suddenly horrified.

"That's what I want to know!" Sakuro said, an aggrieved tone quite clear in her voice. On the other hand, if Alyra didn't know... bugger. "It's been going on for some time now... ever since we got close to this village, I think." And her cousin had this book... "And my cousin has this book that may or may not be involved - I'm not totally sure yet." Lying and hiding things wouldn't help anyone, a lesson she'd learned all too well. He might be upset it had been mentioned, but their safety was far more important. "I'd kind of like whatever it is to stop, though. It doesn't listen when I yell at it."

Baldek turns his attention to the fightening trio and their eldritch conversation, though he knows when he's out of his league and just stay silent.

Aya:

At the mention of ghosts and ethereal spies Auric slowly rises from his chair and adjusts his belt and scabbards. "Can you pinpoint it... Can you tell if it's a threat?"

Liberty's Edge

Aya:
Keep in mind that you see the magics, not the things directly. The spells are very powerful, very strange, and layered.

Female Elf Wizard

Sakuro. I detect a very strange necromantic aura about you. It seems to fade in and out - when it becomes clear for a moment, the intensity is almost blinding! It's overpowering necromancy - something beyond anything I have studied or even imagined. Though I can't understand the specific spells involved, something seems to be peering through an ethereal rift. It's very powerful, but somehow incredibly limited. The spells are very powerful, very strange, and layered. I truly do not understand.

Well, the spooky spirit lady didn't know, the highly-trained elf wizard didn't know... and Sakuro let out a bit of a sigh as she slumped forward a bit. "Figures." she said. Then, drawing herself up, she put her hands on her hips and looked down slightly. "Oy. If you're capable of understanding me and giving a sign, please do so now in a way that doesn't hurt or threaten anyone in any way. If you're friendly, I'm willing to talk with you as best I can through a means of communication I find appropriate. If you're not friendly, then you must know that I'll do whatever I must to thwart you and stop you from endangering myself or those around me, so you may as well give up now." She saw no sense in beating around the bush about this.

"Who is she talking too? She gone mad?" Baldek asks, unable to remain silent after all.

Female Elf Wizard

Aya continues looking at Sakuro. I am your friend, Sakuro. I certainly mean you no harm. I just seek to understand and help you, if I can and if you will let me ... us. We are your friends.

Sakuro looked up at Aya. "I'm not possessed or being unduly influenced. ...I think." she said. "Seriously, feel free to give any help you want! I gratefully accept all help in dealing with strange aura thingies that aren't even nice enough to tell me what they want." She crossed her arms and nodded firmly.

He stops, taking in the tension in the room.
"So... what's going on?" He asked cautiously.

Listening at the discussion and the various things mentioned she would finally pipe up.

"Do you have that book on you? If so may we see it. That may be the source of this magic."

She would cast her own detect magic as she thought back through the tales in the archives about what could have such a thing. Or create such a thing.

"I think my cousin's got the book right now..." Sakuro began looking around for him. He'd been quite quiet lately, but he should still be somewhere nearby...

Liberty's Edge

You find him sitting at a table up front with an older man and a pretty young woman.

Hey. Whassup?

Others may recognize farmer Gotson and Miriam.

"Yo!" Sakuro said, getting them cheerfully and her normal smile back on her face. She was, however, checking to be sure he actually had the book on him at the moment, and... no! This wasn't the time to start getting all excited about magical artifacts of unknown and potentially unknowable power, dangit! "Come on, what are you doing all the way over here? You're supposed to be with us! No offense, you two." she added quickly, looking at Gotson and Miriam. "But whether he's going to get involved in fighting more ogres or stay where it's safe, I want him to at least know the plan, and that's what we've been going over. Family's got to look out for each other!" she tugged insistently on her cousin's sleeve to draw him towards Aya and the others.

Liberty's Edge

Making quick apologies, he follows...case straps over his shoulder - and the dreaded book within.

They want me to fight? There's a worried hesitation in his voice.

"Only from a distance. You'd have to be either really good or really stupid to get into melee with something twice as tall and a couple times as strong as you." Sakuro mused. "I mean, the whole point is to kill them without letting them have the chance to kill you, right? We've been discussing ways to make that happen." With that, and quite a flourish of her hands, she presented her cousin to the others in the group. "Ta-da!"

Reiko sighs in resignation when the boy, and the book, arrives. Then he speaks.
Quite a few of you know that whatever foul magic we found at the farmhouse is linked to my past, and the person I was then. And while I still haven't regained all of those memories, being exposed to it brought some back, enough to know that I once wielded this evil power, and was banished from my homeland because of it, my memories and personality erased. If this book, and this watcher, are linked to that magic, then perhaps if I examine it, I will remember whatever this is... Because I can tell... I used to know.

He looks up at the people, awaiting their judgement for his sins, and whether or not they want to let him see the book.

HP 17/28 AC15 Nia'Nikta

Nia'Nikta looks at Reiko in curiosity but doesn't say anything about the book. They hadn't even seen it if the boy still had it.

"Before we continue, why don't we see if he truly still has the book." She was curious also if he indeed had it. After all, the aura/emanation had left. Maybe that meant the book was being taken away or just faded for now.

Looking to her Cousin.

"Your cousin says you have a book in your possession. One that she has examined. Do you still have that book with you?"

Liberty's Edge

He steps over to the door, and closes it - looks over at Sakuro, then everyone else - then pulls off his satchel, and drops it on the table. He unbuttons the flap, then steps back.

The thing really creeps me out, especially since I saw Sakuro's reaction to it. She's young, but she knows ten times more about magic than I ever will. She turned white as a sheet.

He looks back at the satchel again

Look at it if you want, I guess. If she thinks so...I don't know why I took it. I usually just take stupid stuff. You know, just to show I did it. That I can. Then I figured I'd sell it - talked to a guy about selling it it the 'Roost. Now, I don't. know. This thing is freaky.

He goes to the far end of the table and sits - as far as possible from his satchel.

Really good or really stupid she said... I wonder which one I am? I guess I'll know soon enough!

"Ok, so she's not mad... What are you guys all talking about then? Sounds to me like it's not just about ogres and festival now is it?" ask Baldek with a raspous voice while his hand goes by itself to touch the great scar around his neck.

Female Human Arcanist 4/Arch. 1 | HP: 35/35 | AC: 13, T: 13, FF: 10 | Fort: +3, Ref: +4, Will: +6 | BAB: +2, CMB: +4, CMD: 17 | Init: +9, Perception: +6 |

Instead of grabbing the magical book, Sakuro moved over and hugged her cousin as tightly as she could. "That was the right thing to do." she said, actually having a bit of trouble expressing how happy and proud she felt at the moment. "We just need to get it to someone who can really take care of it and deal with it in whatever way is appropriate." With that, she scooted over and - keeping her distance - whispered Detect Magic to try and examine the book again. Together, perhaps they could learn more about it... and at the very least, she wanted a safe way to transport it.

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

"What'cha think?" she asked the rest of the group - magicians and mundanes alike. Not everyone understood magic, but they could have some surprisingly good ideas about dealing with it... one an arcanist like herself might enver think of.

"It's a book..?" offers Baldek, not understanding a thing about the conversation.

Liberty's Edge

Ok - when Sakuro pulls the book out - things have changed.

Will roll everyone, please. Bravery bonuses apply.

There, in the center of the front of the book (where the 'crease' was, previously) is an.eye. It is NOT dessicated, but is traced with red, all around it. It is likely a HUMAN eye.

It looks at Sakuro first, then swivels to the others, one at a time. Other details are lost as everyone stands in shock for a few moments.

The book is covered in a strange leather, with lumps and wrinkles.

Int rolls, anyone?

Will: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

Well, she'd been trying to stay away from the item and examine its aura as best she could... shoulda known that it would be something nasty, though hopefully her pure willpower (and anger at this thing bothering her cousin so much) would be enough to push through.

Liberty's Edge

Yes, Int. It's enough that you now note the way the lumps and wrinkles are configured - the book is bound in -
