Game Master RPGGGM

With the heart of the Stolen Lands explored and the bandits who ruled there scattered, the long-contested realm finally lies open for pioneers and settlers to stake their claims.:
Amid the rush of opportunistic travelers, the PCs find themselves stewards over a new domain, tasked with the responsibility of guiding and guarding a fledgling nation struggling to grow upon a treacherous borderland. Yet the threats to this new nation quickly prove themselves greater than mere bandits and wild beasts, as the monstrous natives of the hills and forests rampage forth to slaughter all who have trespassed upon their territory. Can the PCs hold the land they’ve fought so hard to explore and tame? Or will their legend be just one more lost to the fangs of the Stolen Lands?

There's the Rutland Isles anthem:

We're much better than you are
We're much bigger than you
We're much stronger than you are
Our God is much bigger too
We've more money than you have
Our girls have much bigger t***
We're much better than you are
You're just a nation of s****

Maybe not the best idea.

And if someone does, we'll need to make sure we do - at least once.
So sure, lets be cocky in our theme song. People may actually like that ;)

Haumea.

I'd have stuck with Avalon as long as I thought nobody disliked it, but now that somebody's getting disappointed either way, I guess Haumea.

Aye...but the point is, we already did have a vote.
You are king earl duke, so obviously you have to be happy with it.
But in that case we need to change the operative parameters. If we re-do the votes every time we end up with a result someone does not like, it will not work with those finalists.

Avalon is not liked by you. Arcadia is not liked by Durgan. Haumea is not liked by me.
So if we want to go that path, everybody who wants will need to "Veto" one option that is then eliminated from the poll.

With the 3 favorites negated, we would end up with:

Aoede
Gaean Vale(x3)
Themiscyra(x2)
Shrikereach(x2)
The Stolen Land
The Marches
Empire of Zokon

Just saying.
In the later case, I would stick with Gaean Vale.
In the former, Avalon. (I don't mind if we make it Avalonia or Avalone or Avelorn (tee-hee) or some other variation for more 'uniqueness')

On a side note: since Kesten and Shepherd Jhod are both at the outpost while you were there figuring out that you wanted them taking a couple of key positions in the kingdom, did you want to go through the formal process of asking them before the party left for Restov? It is not a sure thing that they even want the positions after all. Jhod may have always fancied himself as an armchair general, and Kesten might secretly aspire to the role of ruler or be completely apolitical.

If so discuss here. We might do the RP here so as not to confuse the Gameplay thread with too much time travel.

Ah, I figured we'll first need to go present ourselves and finish the formalities since all we have now is this one charter the Magister had with him, and which has not even be personalized.
As in, only one of the original charter holders even remains. If the Magister just hands that off to whoever claims to have slain the Stag Lord, it could have been a Chaotic Evil Demon-Worshipping Nephew of the King of Pitax with his Drow Companion and a couple of Aspis Thugs.

That is, I understood that as a sort of invitation to present ourselves before formally being given our task, duty and free reign.

If things are already 'clear' now, by all means we should ask Kesten and Jhod and try to relay a message to Tamris and Akiros, as well.

I feel we may need to find Tamris by ourselves, but Akiros - it would be good if he knows what we are up to and we will be a bit longer, AND that things are changing and stability will come to the region. Should get his spirits up and make sure he keeps those at the Fort in line.

So, thats one vote for asking them now and informing those not present of our plans.

M Dwarf

Durgan definitely thinks we should ask Kesten - and also see if on our road trip we can do anything to get him back in the good graces of his family. As with Zokon, they might be more favorably inclined towards him if he is moving up in the world.

The Garess family is of particular interest to Durgan because of their dwarven heir (and other dwarven members, I understand).

So another vote in favor. Though Durgan has had very limited interaction with either NPC.

At present Zokon (All Hail Earl Zokon!) is the only one who really matters. As ruler-elect he doesn't have to present every minor functionary, warband leader or even all of his consorts to the powers in Brevoy, and you weren't planning on finding all these people and taking them with you before going were you? Who would be left in charge?

And even if you did offer someone the position of Royal Backscratcher there's no way of really knowing they would even take the job without a little sit down first. Did anyone even ask Scarlet if you wanted to General (or the title I like is Grand Admiral of the Royal Armada)? "Warden" is the position she seems to wonder about in-character. At least that's the feeling I get from some of Scarlet's posts. Can Scarlet see someone else protecting the royal family while she's off trying to build an army? Or will she be hovering over the Warden and telling whomever they are that they are 'doing it wrong' instead. This is not to say that's what Scarlet wants, only to point out that some folks have complicated motivations. And then there are some people who might not even be right for the job. If for instance, Scarlet (sorry to pick on you) reacted the way I suggested above she would probably not be the best General Admiral.

PSRD wrote:

The Warden is responsible for enforcing laws in larger settlements, as well as ensuring the safety of the kingdom leaders. The Warden also works with the General to deploy forces to protect settlements and react to internal threats.

The General is the highest-ranking member of the kingdom’s military. If the kingdom has an army and a navy, the heads of those organizations report to the kingdom’s General. The General is responsible for looking after the needs of the military and directing the kingdom’s armies in times of war. Most citizens see the General as a protector and patriot.

In closing, this might a good time (and place) to ferret out Kesten's and Jhod's motivations and qualifications. Akiros (and everyone else) likewise, though you can wait until you've returned from Brevoy to handle that if want.

One further note, Tamris's address is 'the Narlmarches' so getting him word might be difficult considering the forest hasn't been fully explored yet.

No worries (yet). No one else has really taken time to get to know either of them either outside of funerals for Oleg and a couple of Kesten's men. Numalar was closest to Kesten, but only because they shared a connections to a great house.

@Presentation: Aye, I didn't think he had to include every minor member of his court for the presentation, but I did believe that whoever acts as sponsor wanted to have a word with him, regardless.
If we are utterly free to do what we want and they just send valuable BP's our way, I'm not complaining, but I did expect whoever is shouldering the cost to want to give us some advice/direction/suggestions etc or at least see what kind of leader they will be dealing with before sending off the shipments.

@General: I know this is not a Junta, but military coups are real regardless. The general needs to be someone absolutely trustworthy and loyal to the group - not a NPC job imho.

Of course, that does not mean Scarlet has to do it. Technically, we are free to distribute and redefine roles. Maybe the leader of the 'Earlguard' is also the General, and keeping the leaders safe is their job.
Maybe the "Secret Service" instead covers security?
Maybe Scarlet only wants to remain a Bodyguard, but I figured with the transition to Book 2 it's about time she can pursue her own fate and e.g. try and resolve things with her brother. Because I don't see a second meeting between him and Alia ending well.
*shrugs*

@Kesten and Jhod: Most definitely. I do think based on their former occupation, background and aspirations, they should be good fits for the jobs suggested - obviously we'll need to check them out, see if they are interested and are qualified, but OOC they seem pretty much the best matches for the positions we have available.

@Tamris: Aye, I did say we'll probably have to go and find him. Unless, of course, 2 Elves hanging around Olegs could be convinced to go find him.

Not you, the bank employees. I want my tuppence! Had I not been apoplectic at the time I would have used some of those lines on the staff.

I went to my bank early on Tuesday with an estate check (my sister and I finally sold our mom's old house--it took WAAAAAY too long to do because I work a ton of hours and couldn't get to the house to bring it up to spec and my sister had just had her first kid. Also in the background is that I own a beater of a car that I am trying to avoid putting more money into (but did have to put $1,200 into back in June). The house when ready sold quick and then there was another loooooong stretch because mom and grandpa didn't handle the title transfer correctly. All the while bits of my car are falling off. So I take my share in check form and deposit it in my savings with the idea that couple of days later I could actually withdraw some of it and buy a new (or less-used) car.... My current car worsens in the meantime. So I go in yesterday (Thursday) and they say the check has been placed on hold (it actually left the estate account though), and should be available next Thursday..... I don't know if they are using carrier pigeons and semaphore or what. So when I get back home I call the help line and they tell me that the account has to settle or the bank has to "acquaint it itself with the account" to which I tell them it is there account and I have been their customer for a long time. To which they say it is on hold and that it is part of their new process and I hang up in disgust. Now, I'm not saying that their racist bank algorithm picked up that my first name isn't exactly as white as I am, or that I have never been particularly wealthy (and they should know because I have been banking with them since 1995), or the fact that I live two blocks away from the city limits of Detroit in a mixed community (black, white, arab, etc...)--but I guess: I am saying that.

So because I got up early, to drive 10 minutes to get to the bank (because they closed all the branches that where close to my home and therefore Detroit) I got to fume quite a bit on the way back, and have started researching other banking options while I wait for MY money.

It's one of the interesting things about banks yeah. I know we occasionally need to fill out where the money comes from if it's an unusual deposit over here - especially lately with the new money laundering laws.

Oh yeah, tell me about banks...

When we got our second kid, money was a bit tight - Car broke, Washing Machine broke, some circumstances simply got together that went beyond our "on-hand"-emergency fund.
So, we tried to withdraw some money from our savings.
The bank flat out told us that was not possible, because the savings account was originally opened in my SO's home town.
And we would need to go there and have the data updated, then we could come back and withdraw.
One of us was working 60 hours a week in 2 jobs, the other was 39th+ week pregnant, and they wanted us to take a long trip to get the savings book update because they are unable to do that between different branches?
We ended up taking a loan from a different bank, then repaid it later when we dissolved our savings account from the afore-mentioned bank.

I do hope things work out for you and best of luck finding a better banking option for you. We did, and have not regretted it.

Hopefully this new government of ours is far smarter than mine. Especially as we bailed out banks, but didn't bail out a travel company that was leaving people stranded overseas.

Speaking on pregnancy if Alia ever gets knocked up, will you be referencing the Book of Erotic Fantasy where Elves stay pregnant for 2 years?

Well, the knocking-up will be left to the dice, so we'll see.

That said, no, because there's been so much change with the maturing rate and lifespan of mixed-races. So I'll work something out with GM if it comes to that.

Perhaps a half-way as I'm assuming it'll be a half-elf of somekind.

Well, from my perspective, it would be a half-human.
The Elf-Side is pretty much a given considering I would be the mother :P
That said, I think there are a lot of more important things to discuss with current topics - this won't be relevant for a long time yet.

Oh no, especially as Alia is very much the kind of character with a lack of interest in that area I imagine.

The shepherd grows noticeably more downcast at this.

He aspires to be the Master of Finance and focus on the economics of our fledgling community. We all have our strenghts, our wishes and our dreams. We listen to those...you think it would be too great an honor? Why do you say so? It sounds and feels like you doubt yourself - I do not with to push you to do something you do not wish, but I would very much like to understand why you consider yourself unworthy - we will shortly be on our way to Restov. That means you will not have to decide right now. If you would like to pray or perform an Augury, you would have all the time you need."

@Durgan: If you want Akate, just say so.

When we passed here last time, I already tried to praise her with her then-employers, but we had no means to help her then. It was also why I immediately thought back to her with the crashing sounds.

I think she could be a great Asset, and I wish to help her. I admit my first thought was to make her a handmaiden, but ultimately, I simply want her happy and taken care of. Wether at Olegs, in Cerulean Glory, or elsewhere - does not matter. So just to clarify, I am perfectly fine if you want to take her under your wings.
Just don't send her off to fend for herself with a copy of the holy scripture of Abadar.

She would probably also be a great candidate for a Cohort for someone taking Leadership. I figured Durgan may not need another Healer, and it would be weird to send her into your employ now, then later grab her from there.

All that said, we'll probably want to run a background-check, just to make sure she's not actually from House Thrune :D

M Dwarf

@Alia: if you want Akate to be your Cohort or handmaiden, just say so.

Otherwise, Durgan would seek to employ her as a healer in his capital, with a monthly salary.

But I do wonder what her third curse is. Another Oracle curse? Lycanthropy? Something else?

I think she considers her Tiefling looks one of them - people tend to have...prejudice against her kind.

Regarding her employ: As said, it's all fine - I would offer her much the same. But I wanted to offer that right away.
We did agree to first get things off the ground, so it may be a while before you get to have your own place.

How about we just take her with us to Cerulean Glory for now, employ her there, and then, at a later time, consider whether she stays or heads with you.
That also gives us time to get to know her a bit better - what Mystery she has, if she picked up an archetype...it may greatly change her utility.
Say she has Shadow Mystery with Seeker Archetype, it WOULD make her a prime secret agent... - other combinations may lend themselves to different specializations.

M Dwarf

Durgan would offer to employ her as just a healer. With his own money. To avoid arguments.

If you wish to spend your own resources (gold, cohort slot, etc.) on giving her a different job and training her for that, that is your prerogative. As your Cohort she could level up and perhaps become the secret agent you envision. I do not think that "we" should employ her as anything more than a healer and do not wish to argue over the use of common funds. So I propose that either Alia or Durgan (or someone else) hire her but not "the party."

Tiefling looks are one "curse," I get that, and Wrecker is another. But thrice-damned? What's the third thing?

Zokon will step in at this moment and say we direct her to Olegs for now, you both do your best to help her and she goes were she wants eventually.

We pay her as we can as a group as it is the right thing to do for now, with whoever is looking after her after that providing governorship.
