Hi! Paizo's impending release of the revised and expanded Curse of the Crimson Throne seems like a great opportunity to dive into one of the few early APs that I've never tried to run. So let this be my call for players! I'm looking for 4 or 5 citizens of Korvosa willing to risk the ultimate sacrifice in order to help stabilize and restore order to our troubled city.

The revised AP is not downloadable for me yet, so we have a bit of waiting to do before I have all the new material, but there's no time like the present to start the character creation and selection process. I will very likely tailor the start of the adventure to fit the backgrounds of the group, and encourage players to link their character backgrounds together wherever they have the urge and see the opportunity.

There is already a website for the game with maps including the home for the current battlemap when that becomes needed. Players who are accepted into the game will be given a login linked to an email address. I do this because I want to feel free to share the excellent artwork that comes with the product (as I would at the table), without worrying about infringing on Paizo's IP rights.

Character submissions should be created with the locale in mind - in this case the city of Korvosa. This means that most people are human and are of Chelish, Varisian or Shoanti descent. Korvosa is a racially-charged atmosphere with upcoming tensions that will strain ties between the city's citizens like nothing in living memory, so choose wisely. I'm certainly not saying that you are confined to these ethnicities, I'm just saying that characters of other backgrounds will stick out.

This AP is largely urban in nature, with some significant dungeon-crawl stretches. Druids and nature-lovers beware, there may be limited chances to shine in the city.

I've put some information from the campaign home page on my profile home page on house rules and whatnot. I will generally post in the evening, east coast US timezone. I will try to keep up at least once-a-night pace as much as real life allows.

Successful player applications for this game will have the following:

- 1st level character built on 25 point buy system (Heroes are supposed to be heroic).
- Maximum starting gold for your class, duly apportioned among possessions.
- Character built from sources: Core Rulebook, Advanced Player's Guide, Ultimate Combat, Ultimate Magic, Advanced Class Guide.
- A thought-out character background sympathetic with the fate of the city.
- An interesting physical description
- Nonevil Alignment
- Two Traits selected from standard sources. New campaign traits are promised with the revised AP, so more to come on that as details become available.

Dot

Sweeeeet.

It isn't one of your listed sources, but I've always wanted to play a Ranger of the Sable Company Marine archetype from Inner Sea Combat in this AP. It can be found here, though for proprietary reasons or whatever they call it a "Sky Stalker". It seems like it'd be super thematic for this Korvosa-based AP. Can I do that?

D20PFSRD doesn't have legal rights to use the Golarion-related properties, so they rename things. You can see it here.

Can we use feats and such from other paizo sources if we run them by you with a link first?

Actually my favourite character idea for this AP is a Roof Runner Hunter. Is that archetype within the available sources? It's such a perfect fit.

Submitting Nicolai Fortescu, a Human Wizard (Diviner (foresight)) for consideration.

I plan on submitting a human druid (urban).

Hey! Submit what you like and want! Don't let my intention sway you.

How strict are you on alignment restriction for classes?

Grand Lodge

I'd like to submit Crux.

Background: Crux was born to a life of wealth. He had a talent for magic but his father wanted him to become a soldier. So Crux ran away from home. He had dreams of impressing a great wizard and becoming his apprentice. Eventually becoming a powerful wizard in his own right. Unfortunately, he was found by Gaedren Lamm before that could happen. Gaedren recognized the potential in Crux and tried to force a life of crime upon him. However, Crux was not to be swayed and eventually, Lamm decided the boy with so much potential had to be removed. Crux was beaten and left for dead in the gutters where, as fortune would have it, he was found by a up and coming wizard. The wizard nursed him back to health and took him on as his apprentice. His apprenticeship is now done and Crux has returned to finish his business with Lamm and make amends with his father.

Appearance: Crux is rather tall and thin with a piercing stare. He keeps himself covered as much as possible in an effort to hide the wounds that remain on his face and body from Lamm's depredations. He has a noticeable limp from that last beating as well (though it does not hamper his movement).

I played through the first book with him in a prior game that died. He's currently 5th level but I can return him to the beginning if chosen.

Appearance:

Valybar Boartooth is an olive-skinned gnome, with a broad grin and bristly hair that juts out no matter how he tries to comb it. The bangs of his hair are a bright orange, while the rest of it is a deeper red. He possesses bushy red eyebrows, and his left eye is a normal brown but the right is a golden color that is strangely dilated larger than his left. He keeps it covered with a simple leather eyepatch stitched with a symbolic flame on the leather. He has two lower teeth that are larger than usual, almost large enough to be considered tusks... but that would either mean he really is boar toothed or Valybar is the shortest orc the world has ever seen.

History:

Valybar grew up in Whistledown, the largest population of Gnomes in all of Varisia. Spending years there, he discovered a few things about his family bloodlines when His eye changed and things started catching fire around the house. He discovered that his family is a blending of two bloodlines, one of which had some rather unsavory and scandalous dealings with orcs. The other was just a simple fire elemental, nothing a gnome would be worried about.

Realizing he needed to learn more about his magic and perhaps use it to further his own desires (He's always wanted to run a magic shop that sells exclusively fire-themed items). He scraped his money together and managed to get into the academy at Korvosa... that is, until the recent accusations of murder ruined his attendance and lost him his tuition too.

Background:

As a young kid in North Point, Karl was very interested in the church of Abadar. He'd pass by the Bank everyday, listening to the clerics praying and working.
The most important event of Karl's childhood was when his uncle was tried for tax avoidance. He was ordered to stay at home, but managed to sneak into the court and witness the trial. This was the first time Karl saw law in action, and he was mesmerized. It was at this moment that Karl decided- he will be a lawyer and a cleric of Abadar. His uncle was sentenced to twenty years in jail, but Karl didn't care; if this was justice, let it be done.

Luckily for Karl, his sharp eyes and mind cleared his way into the church. He was accepted as an apprentice under the very judge whose trial made Karl decide to become a cleric of Abadar. He carefully watched the tiniest expressions of witnesses and defendants, training his mind until he could catch even the tiniest gesture, the least significant twitch. And finally, after five years of hard work, Karl was accepted as a judge of Korvosa.

Karl's first trial as a judge was supposedly an easy one. A crook was caught illegally dealing in Shiver; there were eyewitnesses, there was evidence, it was as simple as it gets. And soon enough, the young Varisian was thrown in jail. It was such a good feeling, bringing justice to the life of those who need it.

However, there were some who didn't accept this sentence so easily. When Karl returned home, a note was waiting for him on his front door.
You've dealt with the Lamm. It was nice knowing you, kid.
Terrified and equally confused, Karl went to sleep.

The next morning, when Karl went to court, he wasn't the judge. He was the defendant. Apparently, a key witness from yesterday's trial was found dead last night, and a local fisherman testified to having seen Karl murder the man. Karl was suspended from his position as judge, and was placed under church surveillance until his innocence- or guilt- could be proven. After many long days, the fisherman finally confessed that he was blackmailed into delivering a false testimony. Karl was found innocent, but with this stain on his reputation, he couldn't serve as a judge in Korvosa again.

Karl spent the following days trying to find as much information as possible on this "Lamm" from his note, and finally found the needed information in an old court record- Gaedren Lamm, an old and well known criminal, who was never caught or brought to trial. Karl now knew what he has to do.
He took up his crossbow, donned armour and declared his goal- catch the foul scum, bring him to court and make sure justice is brought to all his victims.

Description:

Not particularly tall and not particularly handsome, Karl is a typical Chelaxian human. His round, tan face is decorated with a layer of stubble and short, black, unkempt hair, giving him a slightly intimidating yet tired look.
Unlike others who take up arms in the name of their faith, Karl's hands aren't muscular, and his frame is only slightly thicker than others'. However, he compensates for this using a powerful crossbow, and very sharp senses. His olive green eyes capture even the tiniest movement and his wide ears hear even the slightest whisper.
With an eagle's sight and a hero's faith, he has set out to capture the criminal who has wronged him, and maybe clean up some more of Korvosa's underground.

Ouachitonian - ironically enough this seems like an easy character concept for a replacement character in this AP, but a hard one to wire into the story from launch. The story begins with the characters at level 1 and the events of the plot are going to create trainus interruptus for members of cloistered academies like the Sable Company and the Acadamae. Because they produce graduates who are more powerful than level 1, it's hard from a plot standpoint to justify your graduation/access to prestige classes and archetypes. Once we're 2nd level, this plot hitch goes away. There's also, of course, alot of indoor stuff in your future, so don't link too much of your power/love-of-character to the flying mount mechanic. :) But I welcome your first-level self and a convincing character story and we can go from there.

Well, i'd like to aim for RMA if possible, but they require LE, only one step away from LN =^^=

It's from Ultimate Magic. I checked :)

However, I did also discover the orc bloodline came from the orcs of golarion supplement, so I CAN change it to draconic, which would do pretty much the same thing, but it just seemed thematically more boring to me. Let me know if you want me to change it cause either way works!

They're antagonists.

If it is so in the AG i am sorry. Didnt see that. Will build something else. But from the stuff ive read. They can be used in quite a few different ways =^^=

Then perhaps i will ggo for the Horizon Walker then. Just need to change a few things. But class will remain the same =^^=

"Reduce to Materials Angrily?

Acadamae Graduate is a feat for first level characters. Freshly graduated wizards could work just fine imho, though it's not like I'm making a character from there, so it doesn't matter to me.

I got two fairly developed character ideas for this. One is an arcane trickster (starting out rogue) using the accomplished sneak attacker feat from dirty tactics toolbox to qualify with only a single level of rogue. Would you allow that feat? I would also much prefer the unchained version of rogue.

The second idea is a summoner... What do you think of the class? I know a lot of GMS dislike summoner, so I thought I should ask first.

I have an aasimar paladin of Shelyn who is actually the born out of wedlock daughter of the king and heiress to the throne, and she doesn't know it though! I'll have the concept posted soon though. But first are you okay with someone playing an aasimar paladin of Shelyn?

Fair enough. I might go a different direction to start, but keep the Sable Company idea in the back of my mind in case (heaven forbid) I end up needing a replacement character later on. Or I might dive in and try to explain how a marine-in-training is out galavanting around. We'll see.

Seth86, Rysky, et al. Yes, the Assassins are definitely right out. Thanks for that! :)

rungok - your selections are fine. Definitely submit what you like.

oxyzar - Why did I have lodged in my cranium that the overrun of Imps in the Acadamae was due to summoning an Imp being part of the graduation ceremony? I don't find that reference now, so I guess I made it up. But had it been true, summoning an Imp would be about Summon Monster 3 - thus my confusion. Thanks for spotting that and tipping me off to the archetype. I have no issue with Acadamae graduates in the party.

On the subject of unchained, I don't have the rules and am not familiar, so I'm going to have to say no. On the Accomplished Sneak Attack, etc I say yes, allowed. Where summoner is concerned, I've read enough of its tendency towards over-power to have apprehension. If that's the character you most want to play, submit it and I will consider him/her along with the other submissions.

SCKnightHero1 - I'm not prejudiced against the notion of the Aasimar. The paladin may be a little more problematic in a morally-neutral party - not really sure how that will work out but it is something I'll watch for when I'm going through the submissions. It's a good foundation for a backstory, though. Eodred was a womanizing fool for years before he upped the ante by bringing his young wife to the city.

You can find the unchained rules at http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/unchained/classes/index.html (which I mention as I was thinking of pitching an unchained barbarian).

From the unchained classes intro:

Since the release of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook, countless game sessions have revealed that certain classes have been pushing against their constraints, yearning to break free into something at once familiar and new. This chapter includes unchained versions of the barbarian, monk, rogue, and summoner, as well as subsystems that alter character advancement. These classes can be used alongside their original counterparts (although individual characters must use one version or the other exclusively). Some feats, rage powers, rogue talents, and other rules might not work with the unchained classes, and such rules should be reviewed before being used with the new versions. Finally, with the exception of the monk, these classes should work with any of the archetypes from previous books as long as the classes still have the appropriate class features to replace.

Barbarian: From a game balance perspective, the original barbarian serves her role admirably, but her mechanics require the player to recalculate numerous values once she enters a rage and keep track of a bevy of once-per-rage abilities. She can easily die in a fight due to the way that ending a rage lowers her hit points. The unchained barbarian significantly simplifies the rage bonus calculations, and she gains temporary hit points instead of raising and later decreasing her current and maximum hit points. Finally, she gains stronger versions of some of the weakest rage powers.

Monk: The original monk has many disparate abilities, which don't always work together and are inflexible. The unchained monk loosens up, gaining ki powers that allow greater customization. The unchained monk also has a full base attack bonus and an all-new flurry of blows.

Rogue: The original rogue has a niche thanks to her sneak attack and high number of skill ranks, but she is still somewhat underpowered. The unchained rogue can debilitate her enemies to dramatically alter her ability to hit or dodge them, gains a unique edge when using her favorite skills, and enjoys a significant boost to her rogue talents.

Summoner: The original summoner has plenty of innovative features, but he also lacks focus and theme. The unchained summoner gains an eidolon that fits among existing outsiders, gaining additional abilities and plenty of thematic flavor. Additionally, he has a revised spell list more in line with similar casters.

Also do you want us to pick our traits now or wait on one of them for the new traits to come out?

I figure this is a long shot, but since this AP seems to be mostly urban I thought I would ask.

Will you allow the Vigilante from Ultimate Intrigue?

My interest has been piqued. :)

I'm planning on putting together an Arcanist and submitting her.

By the way, I'm currently GMing a similar campaign on the boards here. Will that be a problem, GM?

This is Ouachitonian's submission, Thorfinn Wyrmblod, Ulfen Draconic Bloodrager. I went ahead and gave him one of the current campaign traits. I can change it if you'd prefer, but it was helpful in constructing his backstory (which needn't change if I do pick a new trait). Eventually I'd like to take him into Dragon Disciple, but it'll be a while yet. For now, he'll reap his bloody vengeance on Lamm with claws and armor spikes.

Sovereign Court

Ok, here's Orson Callevarno, human urban druid and resident of Korvosa.

Orson is a support character who can do some pretty decent healing, and he also has a bit of face skill (a reasonable Charisma) that will let him aid the party in social situations. As an urban druid he strikes a balance between the needs of the wild and the needs of the city. He has the Community domain, which gives him some strong powers and spells to help the party.

Orson is an easygoing man from a mercantile background who wants to help solve some of Korvosa's local problems, especially the current running conflict between the druids of the sea and the laborers of the harbor district. Unfortunately, having been framed for murder, he is not in much of a position to be trusted by ether side...

I previously played Orson in a Curse game that folded at the outset of the first combat encounter. (DM disappeared.)

Let me know if there are any questions. Orson is currently built on 25 points, max starting gold, and two traits, one of which is the campaign trait Framed.

I'm applying with Emileva. I made her a while back for a COTCT game but she didn't get in.

Currently her progression would be Slayer (Vanguard) 1 / Fighter (Lore Warden/Martial Master) 2+

The level of Slayer represents her military academy training. I'll probably change around the build a little bit, but would Lore Warden be okay even though it is't among the materials you mentioned?

Her backstory and other fluff will remain the same. It was built for the Drug Addict campaign trait, and that will remain the same whether or not she keeps the trait.

Dotting, I'll be making up an Empiricist Investigator I think.

DM Luke, I wish to introduce you to Argus Crady, an urban druid who tends the streets of Korvosa as a gardener tends his flowers.
As things aside, I'm pleased how well this character meshes with his feats and traits. I will expand on his history some more later, but he's essentially done.

@GM
The idea with second build. Because of his race, he tends to help other people with same problems get through the city. Also. Due to his extensive knowledge of said back streets he also smuggles items past the guards for other people of a certain disposition

I got two characters nearly ready for this AP (need to update them with 25 point build)

Meraim Noch"Barz, a tiefling, inquisitor of Asmodeus (LE, but more Lawful than Evil)

Nargun Firehelm a dwarf barbarian

Well for my one level of unchained rogue the change is simple enough, it would grant weapon finesse for free. Guess I have to pick up that feat the normal way instead. At least I won't have trouble figuring out what feats to pick since my first two are kinda mandatory (weapon focus and accomplished sneak attacker).

The summoner idea is a paired submission with another player. I'll see if he wants to do it before I decide which one I'm going with.

motteditor - I think I'm going to hold the line on the unchained thing for now. It's totally unfamiliar to me and I want to focus more on story than learning new mechanics. Somewhere down the line I'll get these new rules under my wing I'm sure. As far as the traits are concerned, I'm hoping Tyrannosaurus Jacobs is going to have the new traits posted to the Paizo blog very soon (since the book is shipping). I expect to keep the recruit thread open for a week at least, so I would just hold a spot open in your submission and wait on the traits. That said, I'd love an early look at your character concept.

Rhal - I don't have UI, and am leary of pulling in a class so unfamiliar (for same reasons as above). You can submit the vigilante, but I would prefer a class from one of the books on my shelf.

Dragoncat - I'm assuming many of the potential players know the backstory of the AP, so I trust you to manage player v character knowledge. You're obviously a seasoned enough player/GM to know the importance of this, so I would be fine with it.

Ouachitonian - Thank You! As an aside, your alignment is different between the summary stats and the details (CG in one, NG in another).

Jesse Heinig - Thanks!

Emileva - Welcome! Nice backstory.

TheWaskally - Thank you!

DM Lil" Eschie - Thank you times deux. I have reservations about Meraim, but could be swayed if the mix of other characters selected make her seem like a better fit.

Intrigued. Would the other player play the eidolon?

Meraim has been updated to 25 point buy.

I should add some equipment for max gold.

If you prefer, for equity with the other players, to allow only one character to be presented for selection, I'll choose Meraim.

This is SCKnightHero1 here, and here is my aasimar paladin of Shelyn! And thank you GM for answering my question! I appreciate it!

Background:

Some say that aasimars are born under unusual circumstances, which would be true of Geneviève Châtel, the daughter of Serena Châtel, a low-ranking noblewoman. Despite the fact that the young girl never knew who father, her mother tried her best to raise her daughter as she could alone. Serena loved her daughter, but whenever the subject of the child’s father came up, Geneviève’s mother would only say that at one time her lover had fancied her and she fancied him, but his attention soon drifted from her to another. It was only later that Serena became pregnant with Geneviève. Her mother wouldn’t speak of who the father was though. Serena soon realized that her daughter had been blessed with the blood of the Châtel Family’s celestial patron, a silver furred leonal agathion who had fallen for the Châtel House’s founder, a paladin of Shelyn who had risked life and limb to save a baby unicorn from ravenous trolls. That explained why the emblem of House Châtel was that of a silver lion protecting a baby unicorn.

As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Geneviève soon saw that the family’s fortunes turned, and not for the best it would seem. Serena became ill from the stress of trying to keep her family afloat, but sadly the strain was too much to bear. Serena died in her sleep, cradling her daughter one last time, singing a song that had always been Geneviève’s favorite. House Châtel fell that day. To make matters worse, the family had fallen greatly into debt and the family manor was sold to pay off the creditors. As for Geneviève, with no surviving relatives or anyone willing to take her in, she was sent to an overcrowded orphanage. Despite being the blunt of taunts and bullying, the little girl whose family had been once a part of the nobility, tried to look on the bright side of things, but things only became darker.

The irresponsible matron who ruled the orphanage traded the little girl to a man named Gaedren Lamm in return for a desperately needed loan of money. Geneviève wondered if she had been adopted, but she soon learned that Gaedren was not interested in raising a family, unless you count him enslaving orphans to be used as his pickpockets and agents of crime called the ‘Little Lamms.’ Geneviève was forced to become a con artist, tricking people of their money. However, she tried to beg, pleading passersby of money in the hopes that she could earn enough to get out from under Gaedren’s control, but the despicable man would have none of it. He enjoyed calling her things like, ‘Fallen Lady’ or made fun of her cat-like slit eyes by calling her ‘Cat Eyes.’ Then, when she reached puberty, did Gaedren realized that he had stroke gold.

Geneviève’s body grew shiny silver fur over her body as her hands became equipped with claw-like fingernails. She even grew a lioness’s tail, while her ears became catlike! Gaedren hoped that he could use her as pickpocket and even con people out of a lot of money because surely anyone would take pity on a homeless child who carried the blood of angels in her veins. However, a complication soon appeared not long after her celestial heritage showed itself. Geneviève found a holy symbol of the goddess Shelyn while on a job for Gaedren and, intrigued by it, she snuck off to attend services at the Sanctuary of Shelyn. When Gaedren found out that the aasimar child was slicking her duties to him, he exploded in rage and beat her to within an inch of the aasimar’s life and broke her holy symbol. But Geneviève’s faith let her block out the pain and she fortunately escaped his control and took shelter in the church of Shelyn where she spent the rest of her youth there. Geneviève trained to become a paladin of Shelyn, hoping to make her departed mother proud of her. She tends to keep her face and ears (and especially her tail!) covered, worried that others might be unsettled by her appearance, as she sometimes wonders if being an aasimar is a curse, and not a blessing.

Physical Description:

Geneviève is an attractive aasimar, blessed with the fortitude and beauty of the agathions of Nirvana, specifically leonals, in addition to an unearthly beauty. She has furred catlike ears and a lioness’s tail. Her body is covered in shiny, silvery fur that is as soft as silk. Her shoulder-length hair is a mixture of golden yellow and silver, sparkling in the sunlight. In the moonlight, her hair turns a metallic, shining silver. Above her head is a glowing halo. To keep others from guessing, she’s an aasimar, she tries to convince others that the halo is the result of a magical item she was given or found. She also has an unique scent about her: she smells of roses.

Personality:

Geneviève is a shy, yet friendly person, trying her best to do good wherever she goes. She is extremely paranoid, however, about what others would think of her if they learned she was an aasimar. She goes to great lengths to hide her appearance. She does care about others and would sacrifice herself to defend those she would call friend as well as her ideals. She is strongly devoted to the Eternal Rose and does her best to live up to honoring the code of Shelyn's holy warriors. When she speaks, she tends to speak softly, trying her hardest to be polite to those she is talking to. Deep down, she desires to show others who she really is and not be afraid and ashamed of her celestial heritage. It would take a momentous event to get her to do that though.

Thanks, GM. :)

Anyways, allow me to introduce my character: Tassira Vantyev. She's a graduate of Theumanexus College who's had some really bad experiences with shiver in the past.
