We have a wizard (Ozzy's brother?)
The reach cleric is definitely a good build. Should complement a traditional cleric. I like the reach barbarian too.
We were big skydivers in college. I mentioned once that adventuring with one cleric is like jumping without a reserve chute. Which British paratroopers did in ww2.

I am actually enjoying learning the hard lessons of mortality again. I think I have played in too many games where no matter how bad our choices were, we would have some 'lucky rolls' that would save our bacon.
I have worked up my cleric idea, He is very archetypal. Armor and shield, carries a mace and crossbow. Man who lost his family to illness and fell to drinking, saved by religion and feels his life is in hands of Pelor, thus he crusades to root out evil with the abandon of one who should be dead but isn't and doesn't fear it anymore.

Any chance a cleric of Tsolorandril whose weapon is a spiked chain would get away with using a Flying Blade as their proficient weapon of choice?
Logan 1138:
As for PbP vs other means of playing, I far prefer face to face table top play … I use a projected map with dynamic lighting, custom mini's and have a grand time. The opportunity for everyone to get together and dedicated a few consecutive hours though is few and far between. Pbp allows me to get a different (and not altogether lessor experience), without impacting more than a few minutes at a time. I am "fortunate" to be in front of the computer enough to check in and respond if necessary, so that's no problem. I'm actually in three active Pbp's right now and one other one just finished. It's just another way.
If I was going to play synchronously without being face-to-face I would definitely want to do Skype with Roll20 mapping, it just seems like a lot of pretty frantic typing to Pbp all at the same time. I like having time to consider what I write. In either case if I am going to dedicate a block of time, then I would rather go face to face, so I don't see doing any virtual on-line play UNLESS it's just to meet up with people I already know and play with, but are now geographically disperse.
As for death … I'm fine with death … I wish it was more prevalent … there needs to be actual risk!

My problem is that I have only just gotten back into gaming after a 20 year hiatus, so I don't have a F2F group to game with any longer. I would definitely prefer to game F2F, it's just not an option for me at this time.
As far as PbP, I am not a particularly adept writer (and I don't enjoy doing it) so I find it to be a little bit challenging. I have discovered from my short time on these boards that my group was really more a "roll" playing group than a "role" playing one. We didn't create elaborate back stories for our characters and didn't make a lot of fancy speeches in game like I see in many games on these boards.
The expectation seems to be that most people are on these boards precisely because they WANT to do deep, involved role-playing, while I am merely here because it is my only outlet for gaming at the current time. I'd be perfectly content to do good old fashioned dungeon crawling with a minimum of in-depth character development and role play.

I find that the boards allow for more role playing than many F2F situations because of the time allowed to think of your answer. I role play here more than F2F … well, F2F I play what my character would do based off of his past etc, that's one level of role playing, but I'm not whipping out elaborate speeches or using funny voices or anything (that's another aspect of role plaint). I think I am about the same here in pbp. I play the character, but I don't necessarily write elaborate speeches or anything.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Oh … and my F2F group is my 10 and 8 year olds, My cousin (whom I played with over 20 years ago), his 10, as 12 year olds an my wife that I suckered into playing!
I started again because my 10 (at the time 7) year old saw a reference to "Magic and Monsters" in the Whimpy Kid books and mentioned it to me. I said that sounded like they were spoofing Dungeons and Dragons and relayed some stories about it. He got interested and voila, now after 25 years or so of not playing, he and I are heading to PaizoCon for our second year!
So the trick is to BREED a F2F group!

My kids played for a while, but they are not so hot about Pathfinder anymore.
Flying blade is UC :-( and not retro. I like the idea of starting a level of dwarf fighter and then back to cleric in a tough campaign. That gives you war axe with tower shield in your hands, a good combo and an AC in the 20s. Heavy armor is a bigger bonus level 2-3 as you can aim for plate mail.
Morgan is back--chime in as you are ready.

Well...I wanted to take time to think it over and I've decided not to continue in this game. I wanted to be sure I wasn't just quitting because of the frustration from dying multiple times in the first encounter and I'm satisfied that it is as much to do with my feelings about PbP gaming (and Pathfinder) as it is the dying.
This is obviously a good point for me to leave before the next "re-boot" so I'll just thank Tribute for GM'ing games that are a reasonable facsimile to the "old school" style I still prefer and wish you all good luck and happy gaming.
Kelgan Farwander |
GM, this is an alias of mellowgoth. As we discussed in PM: GM, group; for your apporval, here is Kelgan. Should he live to level 2, he will most likely take a level of cleric.
Kelgan is a dwarf with a wandering foot, originally fromthe Crystalmists, but chafing at the rigid structures of typical dwarven clan life. A lonely fortress in the borders is the latest thing to catch his fancy...

I had some requests to join. If polinski accepts, he will be posting a rogue soon.
You can see all my inactive campaigns! As Jerry Seinfeld would say, the easy thing is STARTING a campaign--the hard thing is HOLDING the campaign. The humorous thing I find is a GM will strand people in a bunch of campaigns and pop out three months later and offer to take two groups through the latest AP.
Ozmund the Evocator |
I have noticed that as well. My Kingmaker game is almost a year old, and they will just be finishing the first book. We had periods of 'quiet', but I would never just bail on them. I have had too many games where that has happened (and get stuck with the game thread on my page because the DM did not make in in-active!)
Horster Underfoot |
"Nice to meet you all! Anyone for roast pigeon?", says Horster, quickly wiping his greasy fingers on his tunic and shaking hands with what seems to be refreshingly pleasant company compared to the usual indifferent shrugs he receives.
For those who didn't know, this is my first go at PBP, so would appreciate any help and/or patience while learning the ropes :)

Bree Yark is in the urban dictionary!
Bree-yark is most definitely not "I surrender" in the goblin language.
A foreign phrase that you tell someone means the opposite of what it actually means, in order that hilarity will ensue sometime later when they say it or hear it said.
In the Original Dungeons & Dragons adventure module B2 "The Keep on the Boderlands", one of the random rumors that characters can be told upon starting the adventure is that "'Bree-Yark!' is goblin-language for 'we surrender!". The DM, howerver, is told that it actually means "Hey, Rube!" and is a signal for any nearby goblins to come join in an attack.
If when they see you, you hear them yell "Bree-yark", that means they surrender, so go ahead and follow them into the next room to pick up their treasure.
So when you tell some the opposite translation to see hilarity ensue is a Bree-Yark
