@Carl: Unless otherwise noted, languages are as normal.

@Attropos: I can waive alignment restrictions for things. However, I don't quite think that Chaotic Neutral Bats is the sort I really want in here. I feel like at least one of either Lawful or Good would be needed to really be a character in line with the game. Preferrably Good in some way.

I'm aware of the alignment image, but important to get across is that this game is sort of made with the intention of sort of avoiding "darker", especially in terms of the really iconic characters like Batman who can really do without that darkness. He's not married to the concept in the way that say, Ghost Rider is.

@.Xane: You can take a template as one half of your gestalt in levels equal to its CR.

Sadly, don't know Herolab too well since I just piece together raw text statblocks and math it all out myself, but yes, that's probably the best way to do it.

@gyrfalcon: Yeah, DMing it is gonna be fun. Thankfully I'm a wizard at swiftly making characters, so it won't be the worst.

@Eric: I don't know about that. I feel like the whole flag thing is a little too married to it in terms of the object and how it encumbers you for the bonuses to let it be replaced by a pendant or coat.

@D-Kal: Looking pretty solid so far.

@Monkeygod: I'll get back to you on that.

@Daredevil: Even with the staggered effect whether or not you succeed, and AoO provocation? It's not too great but I guess if you're set on it?

I will however let Shadow Dodge be taken just fine.

@Captain Taldan: Yeah, the problem there is within not really having a nuclear analogue in the setting, so pretty much just go with whatever you'd like and adapt it from there.

@Banner: She-Hulk doesn't really transform; she's got a different version of it, not as strong as Hulk, and not nearly as anger-fuelled, so it'd be a different build, probably. Honestly it might be better to do away with the shifting altogether since you gain nothing by not being, and she's gone about her normal life Hulked out before just fine.

@Emily: Don't worry about alignment restrictions on classes. And yeah, Serene Barbarian looks fine to me, interesting way to go for her. Lack of Knowledge checks sort of runs counter to the concept though.

@Gavmania: Yeah, no, not allowing a change of core stat for Monk. I even specify that you can only change your casting stat with that buy if you're taking two casting classes.

D-Kal wrote:

I'm not that familiar with the character unfortunately.

Ninja (CHA) or Brawler from the ACG (just plain ol' STR) seem like possible remedies to get out of a WIS dependency. That opens up every Bloodline for you too, if there's another that's more thematic than Empyrial...assuming either can work well with your build.

Not a problem Spooky! Thanks for sorting through so much stuff... there's a lot of good things in this thread, but man, there are a lot of pages!

It doesn't matter about Batty... I think I like my Ironman concept much more. I think the Stark personality is easier to roleplay anyways.

Quick question on Synthesist, can I switch the Strength and Dexterity on the Biped Eidolon? All of the Eidolons are statted with the same scores, but somehow, I don't see Ironman in a snake suit.

Not sure what his alignment will be yet, as I am sort of debating whether he will be NG, CG, or CN. He will definitely be a more light hearted character, if somewhat sarcastic.

Ironman: Synthesist 8/Gunslinger (Musket Master) 1/Urban Barbarian 2/Ranger (Skirmisher/Guide) 5

I had a lot of fun making this build; obviously one side has to be full synthesist for the suit, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out what his other half would be. Obviously the gunslinger dip for gun training (which is at first level with guns everywhere), but I couldn't figure out how to make it seem like the mobile fighter he is. I eventually went with skirmisher for the pseudo-pounce Stag's Leap and an Urban Barbarian dip to get a sort of temporary boost of power from the suit.

The endless bandoleer is going to be split into the two arms, with the gun barrels dropping down from his wrists. The extra arms the suit provides are going to be small mechanical bits that help deploy the guns and hold the gun attached to his primary arms and the tubes that will feed that cartridges to his guns. All of his spells will emanate from some part of the suit.

The At-Will Evolution Surge I chose for 6 points represents Stark's ability to tinker with his suit. The background for him isn't quite finished yet, but will be soon.

So I guess I will go CG with Cat Woman? I was going to go CN, but wasn't planning on making her dark or hard to work with on a team. I see her as having a good heart and defending friends/weaker people. She is still a thief though, so I don't know what fits. I never play brooding or selfish characters. I just want her to have some depth and inner struggle. In the end, she will always be on the right side. Could I add a chance encounter with Xavier in my background (a hook to make it easier if I meet him again in the future)?

Hey, still working on Iceman. For the oracle curse, instead of Blackened could I do "Frozen", with ice versions of the spells added to my oracle spells known and still taking the same attack neg?

Also, for the racial abilities:

4 RP?: 1/turn can create ice slides up to 60 ft in any direction (including curves, ramps cost 10 per 5 feet upward or downward) that last until the end of his next turn. This activates automatically if he moves, following his movement as part of the slide.

4 RP: +1 to the DC for spells with the Cold descriptor.

2 RP: 1/day can cast a cold version of Burning Disarm. This upgrades to 3/day at 7th level and 5/day at 15th.

@Attropos: Hm, interesting build.

@Selina: You can go CG if you wish, but I think she's perfectly valid as CN, being a former villain and still fairly self-motivated. The only reason I was iffy about it being Batman is that CN Batman would be divorced from both any compulsion to uphold laws, or the drive to perform good acts, and I feel like tonally there's no easier way to kill the "superheroes are fun" mode than to have a Batman removed from both of those things.

@Robert: Sure, you can change the curse. Race Enhancer stuff looks about right.

Hmmmm, how would you feel about modifying the Slayer favored enemy ability then? I'd be fine with changing it so that it only works if I pass an appropriate knowledge check. It could be the Student of War's DC of 10 + target's HD. It'd be nice if instead I could have a couple more knowledge skills as class skills, but I'm also fine with just the straight-up drawback since making knowledge checks to have advantages against an enemy does sound pretty cool, flavor-wise.

The main reason why I like Slayer over Student of War is that in addition to having the rogue-like abilities I want, I can start taking levels in it immediately, meaning that by the time I reach level 7, I can declare a favored enemy as a swift action (rather than a move action). I wouldn't get that from Student of War until I was 7th level in that, which would be 14th character level at the earliest.

Sorry if that's too rules bendy or weird, and I'm totally ok if you don't want to do it. I just thought I'd propose it and see what happens.

I kind of don't feel like really touching Slayer too much because it's not even really publicly out yet or "finished", plus there's a lot of things I can fudge and house rule but I feel like f!%~ing with a class's core feature is getting into being a bit much. We can definitely see about expanding your class skill list for more Knowledges, though.

Thanks Spooky & gyrfalcon. (^_^)

Okay...will work through doing it that way with HeroLab, thank'e.

So...adding a template...One simply 'Counts in' the CR of the template as equivalent levels? With, say a CR 1 being equivalent of one leve, CR two equivalent of 2 etc?

Again, thanks to DM Spooky for all their work. help, effort etc and to every one else for bouncing ideas, help around.

Much cheers to all.

Huh—wouldn't have pictured Iron Man with muskets, but that's probably period appropriate. Also, dunno if it applies, but Tinker Gnomes are proficient with all weapons they craft.

Meanwhile, CN is certainly my favorite alignment, but in superhero terms I kind of picture the difference between CG and CN as superheroes who have a code of peaceful resolution they live by (Batman, Thor, Squirrel Girl, etc.) and ones who don't or who aren't just heroes for the sake of heroism.

Also: now I'm suddenly curious about how one would build Aquaman or Namor the Submariner.

Another thought, and probably overkill (I'm just enjoying this thread so much): Is it reasonable to have a character who worships a DC deity other than the ones you mention in the setting, or would that have to be something a character keeps secret for fear of being shunned? Black Orchid tends to serve the deific entity known as "The Green," who is also associated with Swamp Thing, Poison Ivy, and a few of the Green Lanterns.

That's fine. And I don't need the extra class skills/can multiclass something if I really want them.

I think I might compromise between the two and take levels in slayer, but switch my monk archetype from weapon master to martial artist. I lose ki and some nice bonus feats, but it has a Wis check to study opponents to get bonuses.

Apropos of nothing, I just realized that Foo Dog is a reasonable facsimile for Lockjaw, and I totally want to see Lockjaw around (though presumably as an NPC, rather than a PC).

I thought for a bit about building one of the Inhumans -- and I think Crystal has a lot of potential -- but I'm very attached to Beast Boy at this point. I'll give all kinds of props though to anyone who applies as Lockjaw. ;0)

No probs, was worth a shot :) Will readjust a bit. I was not aware we could use templates. Two bad there is not a vampire daywalker already :(. Time to adjust things.

Isn't that a Dhampir?

Can't get to D20psrd from work, but if your linking the Paizo Dhampir then no thats not Blade, Blade has all the powers none of the weakness, Meaning Superhuman Strength, Stamina, Speed adn Reflexes. He does have the thirst and well he doen't drain energy by touch like pathfinder vamps. I think my Dhampir I build suits him ok.

The current incarnation uses his fists, though previous incarnations used a quarterstaff that got changed to a sceptre (say, mace). I believe that while he was King of Otherworld, he had a sword too (but I don't know much about the most recent stuff). Brawler might work, but the main reason I picked Monk is because He has Force Fields, which Monk's armour bonuses can be reskinned as. Also, he hits hard with his Fists enhanced by Telekinesis (Monks unarmed damage). Also, his costume enhances and focuses his inherent power (a la Monk's robe).

Thinking about it, the Wis gvies me better ac, stunning Fist and Quivering Palm, and also better Perception but that's all. (He doesn't get Ki as a Martial artist). Well, he's not going to be using Stunning Fist or Quivering Palm, so the only loss would be ac, which is already high, and Perception, which is also high. I might cut back on WIS and boost one of his mental stats (INT covers his background as a scientist - or in this case Sage, Cha as I discussed would be a source for his sorcery powers)

If you're worried about the personality, you could always do something like take the Headstrong drawback -- when one considers Brian's behaviour at various stages (especially with his sister or Megyn), it would seem rahter... accurate... (As memory serves, he was getting dressed down by Nightcrawler at least every other issue of early Excalibur)

@Spooky - Any chance the Birthmark trait could work for me even during polymorph? Just an intrinsic divine focus?

Spooky GM wrote:

Purrrrrfect! ;) I will go with CN then. It gives her a little bit of an edge.

Holy system mastery challenge Batman! !!

I am reworking things for dd going toward Slayer over Rogue. I pulled description s for all the abilities. Are there any layout or profile configuration guidelines you want us to follow.

@.Xane: Yeah, that's right. Beast Boy has Phasm to get shapeshifting, and it's a CR 7, so it counts as seven levels on one side.

@Flora: That would be something. And yes, it's totally reasonable to add deities onto that. I put in only the ones I felt likely to be used, since there isn't much of a clerical bend to superheroes. There are certainly other elements of the cosmology. I wasn't going to allow Swamp Thing due to him being an NPC of importance, so I didn't even think to add The Green because honestly Black Orchid was so obscure I didn't expect anyone to suggest playing her.

@Emily: If you're losing Ki, does that also mean you'll be dropping Vow of Silence and just roleplaying it?

@gyrfalcon: Really, you don't want to see one party playing as Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers? Because I have to say, the fact nobody has tried to play Throg is deeply upsetting.

@D-Kal: Sure. You could morph in such a way that the Birthmark remains in some way when he shifts into sand.

All I know about Captain Britain is from X-Calibur issues.

Grand Lodge

OK, I have recreated him as a Sorceror (Sage). AC has decreased (but I was able to boost Dex+2, so it's not as bad as it could have been), and I feel happier that he is closer to what he should be. I have added Skill Focus (Perception) to offset the reduced perception a little. I dispensed with the reskinned Wisdom in the Flesh Trait and added reactionary. He is now a Brilliant Planar Arcanist who has studied at Darkmoor Manor, a secret research facility near the Galt border.

@Tilnar I like that idea, I will look into Headstrong and pick a suitable trait to offset it.

Grand Lodge

OK, I have given him an arcane Bond, which will be his internalised item.

Captain Taldan,
Here is the old Cap Brit costume I was thinking of.

*Nods*

Okay...So I'm thinking of going 'Half-Dragon' and 'Giant' to add more 'Oomph' to Xane's Str.

Offsetting the Giant template is easy with a -1 to level for the Cr adjustment.

The Half-Dragon, however, is a CR2. To off set that by the same only neg one level I'll add the 'Young' template.

Going to go Barbarian(Invulnerable rager) and Monk(Martial artist)

Will be looking at a Str around 30 by seventh level. How does that sound?

Much cheers to all.

Haha, glad to know I picked a superhero obscure enough that it surprised the GM. Then again, Black Orchid's obscurity is enough of an in-joke in the DC universe that most of the times she pops up, someone gets her origin story wrong, so that's always fun.

Here it is true believers the slightly changed and improved Daredevil now with full BAB action. I also factored in all his gear. I am not sure if if helps Spooky but I included full write ups from the PFSRD for all abilities so it is right in the profile. Let me know if that is too much clutter.

In the interest in full disclosure; Slayers have the option of taking Ranger Combat feats for their Slayer Talents. There is a list of expanded ranger combat styles taken from the Inner Sea Combat book (it was new to me). One of those styles included Power Attack and Bludgeoner which is how I added those feats.

Lastly Spooky do you want us to assist with building our own Rogues Gallery. Meaning depending on who you pick there is a possibility that you will pull from that heroes past or likely roster of archenemies. Should we try to work out stat-blocks for them like in Daredevil's case: Bullseye, Fisque, Bloodveil Murah (Typhoid Mary), and Random Hand Mook.

I was just wondering if that would help you out or if you are enjoying the process I would hate to take the fun away. ;)

30 Str? Man, I have to go raging elemental form to hit 30.

Just popping in to say I've made some adjustments to Marko to make him more combat-viable. His DPR may not be as high as others, but all things considered, his power is truly staggering. Just as long as nobody attacks him with water or touch attacks.

Yup, it'd be mostly role play. Although as a serene barbarian, when she goes into a state of calm, she can't talk. Which I think is kind of cool since it also gives a boost to Wis, which helps with the martial artist checks against enemies. So it matches the whole "unable to talk = more power" like a Vow of Silence does. It's just not a permanent.

Spooky GM wrote:

How about Peter Porker, The Spectacular Spider-ham; Hulk-bunny; and Captain Americat?

I actually own this. Haha!

@Captain Taldan: Sounds good.

@Flora: Yeah, it was definitely something. I was at school when I first saw your post and told the two friends who are in the game that someone wanted to play Black Orchid, and their response was "Who?" The fact we don't have anyone with a Thor app, or even who even thought of playing Wonder Woman, but we do have a Black Orchid hopeful, is kind of amazing to me.

@Daredevil: Not necessary, but listing abilities is definitely useful. As for enemies, I will be handling that so that they are built to be deadly and efficient. No fun in letting people design their own nemeses.

Well, I was originally thinking of Squirrel Girl, but somebody already had a pretty good crunch for her so... I guess that says a bit about which comics I actually read.

Meanwhile, Black Orchid's rogues' gallery is... Lex Luthor, and I can't think of anyone else. So, probably a good idea for me to not touch that.

Here is Attropos' entry for this campaign, the history and crunch should be almost complete (need to add spells). If any of you notice any discrepancies, or want me to expand on something, send me a PM or comment on it.

Hope to see some of you in this campaign!

Hey Spooky, I'm working on Beast Boy's background and he's got reason to have spent some time on Mediogalti island.

I know that your world doesn't have the Red Mantis, instead replacing them with the League of Assassins. Is the League based on/associated with Mediogalti in your Golarion? If not, is it mostly just a wild, dinosaur-filled jungle island, or is there more to it?

Yeah, that sounds about right; Mediogalti would be the logical place to stick them.

Yay! Means I'm on the right track then.

Okay, shift work running me over atm. Have the week end off so I'll have time then to finish the tweaks to both 'halves' in HeroLab.

Then to work at editing the two sides into one gestalt.

So, sorry for the delay and wishing very one all the very best.

Thanks, cool. He'll get a brief League of Assassins encounter then.

Next question: Does this take game take place in (your version of) the year 4714? Writing up a teen's backstory, I'm finding I need a timeline so that I can visualize what age he was when various events happened. There's nothing tied to recent Golarion history that I'm depending on...but the dates will shift depending on your answer.

Just added a revision to my backstory including an encounter with "The Bat". I also added an encounter with Xavier (if that is OK) to be a possible hook if I am accepted.

Why such high Dex? Iron man is not famous for his agility, he is famous for being able to take a lot of punishment; surely it would make more sense to put most of that into Con. Especially as you are using guns which are ranged touch attacks and not likely to need too much in terms of "To Hit" Bonuses.

Also your saves seem a bit too high. They seem to have a +2 that I can't see an origin for; I can see Base Class(es), Stat Bonus and +2 for Cloak, but there seems to be another +2 after that. What am I missing?

Other than that, it's looking good.

I'm not so sure about Con—canonical Iron man barely has a heart to pump blood through his body. I've always assumed he'd be an Intmonkey, since he's a genius inventor and all, but I guess there's feats and skills that let you do that.

The +2 is from the Synthesist Shielded Meld.

The mechanical reason for pumping dex is because gun-training applies the dex bonus to damage (from gun training at level 1 because of guns everywhere). The flavor reason is because the suit is extremely quick. I can't pump my mental stats with the bonuses from the suit, so they go into dex.

That does remind me that I need to increase Int by 2 for the level bumps from 4 and 8.

I think I will switch around Int and Cha as well... while the summoner is a cha-based class, I think flavor-wise the int is better, and since I'm not really using save based spells, it won't matter too much.

Also, anyone can use/modify the batman build I had set up, or I can post the Wolverine build I was making.

The Exchange

Anyone have any suggestions for mundane equipment? Wouldn't think you'd need much in a bustling city, especially if you're not a weapon-user.

Hey Spooky & gang, Beast Boy's backstory is now complete. The most recent version will always be in his profile, but for convenience I'll paste it below as well.

I've gone with playing him at 16 year old, since I think there's so much roleplay potential for a teen superhero (and it's an iconic element of many comics).

I've expanded a bit on Nicholas Galtry as a potential nemesis (who is likely an alchemist, wizard, or gestalt of the two) and also put in seeds for a grudge from the League of Assassins.

I've also added a longer list of nemeses (some specific to Beast Boy, others to the Teen Titans as a whole).

As discussed in the interest check thread, once recruitment is done I'll want to establish a relationship with one or more characters who have been mentoring him here in Absolom for the last couple years (who and details TBD after recruitment is finalized).

Background:

Mutagens and monkey blood: early childhood and origin of powers (age 0-10)
Gar Logan was born in 4698 to two alchemists (an elven father and a human mother), both junior professors at the Arcanamirium. The family had an apartment in Absolom, in the sprawling neighborhoods around the Arcanamirium, but frequently traveled abroad -- often with young Gar in tow. Gar was ten years old when, on an expedition with his parents researching reagents deep in the hills of Sargava, he was bitten by a cursed monkey.

He fell into a fevered coma and their potions and extracts had no effect on him. Desperate to save him, they spoon fed him a custom mutagen brewed with the monkey's green blood. The mutagen succeeded at saving his life...at the cost of turning him green. In time they raw realized it had also granted him the power to take the form of any beast.

The dubious “care” of Nicholas Galtry (age 11-12)
His parents managed to get Gar safely back to Absolom, and they kept kept a low profile for several months while they nursed him back to health...but before too long they decided to set out for Sargava once again, trying to complete the research that was cut short by the fateful bite of the cursed monkey. This time they left Gar at home under the care of a fellow academic at the Arcanamirium, one Nicholas Galtry, who had developed an academic interest in the shapeshifting boy. Six months after his parents departed, Gar received word that their ship had cut too close to the Eye of Abendego and been smashed on the rocks of Mediogalti Island, leaving no survivors. To this day, he still blames himself for not being there to save his parents.

Meanwhile It turned out that Nicholas Galtry’s fascination with the green boy was far from altruistic. Galtry, who was growing mad in his quest for power and frustrated by his failed experiments to duplicate Gar’s abilities, started sending Gar to steal magic items, reagents, and rare spell components from his rivals. Still just a youth, Gar went along for some time -- thinking he owed Galtry his allegiance -- but before too long realized what Galtry was doing to him and fled. Galtry pursued, and hired others to kill Gar as well, afraid that his crimes would be exposed.

Taking wing (and scale) in Mediogalti (age 13)
Eventually Gar took the form of a kestrel and fled clear to Mediogalti Island, still holding out hope that his parents might be alive there somehow. Failing to find any sign of them, he lost himself for more than a year in the lush island jungles, practicing taking on new forms. It was here that he mastered forms as tiny as a beetle and as massive as an allosaurus, losing himself in the life of various animals. It was a crucial period for Gar learning to make his way in the world, and taking some of the edge off of his guilt and grief over his parents’ death

After fourteen months deep in the jungle, he was flying with some pterodactyls and became curious about a human enclave he spotted down below. Concealed as a gecko on the wall, Gar listened in...and discovered that this was a cell of the League of Assassins, planning to murder Lord Gyr of House Gixx. Without pausing to consider his actions, he transformed into a massive allosaurus and began to rip into the assassins...but they were too many for the young Gar to defeat. With luck and determination he somehow managed to snatch their plans in his maw, transform to a hawk, and escape. With barely a pause, he flew back to Absolom with the evidence clutched in his feet.

Coming of age, with a little help from his friends (age 14-16)
Gar landed, exhausted, in Absolom and set about finding a way to warn and protect Lord Gyr. doing so he met up with Hero(es) TBD, one or more of the party who wants to have acted as a mentor to Gar, chosen after recruitment, who took the young shapeshifter under their wing. Working with the older heroes, he was able to thwart the assassination attempt...and also to forge a lasting relationship.

For the last two years, Gar -- who his new compatriots took to calling the Beast Boy -- has been under the tutelage of TBD, who’ve helped him to gain greater control of his powers, to learn combat skills, and to learn to act as part of a team.

Personality:

Gar is quick with a wisecrack, and quick to boast -- especially about his romantic exploits. Beneath these cracks is a deep insecurity and need to belong. He can be a pain at times, but is fiercely loyal, wanting nothing more than to be an equal and trusted member of the team and to please his mentor (TBD).

Criticism of his looks can bring his old insecurities and social awkwardness right to the surface.

Appearance:

Gar has the appearance of an athletic sixteen year old half-elf, with one notable exception: his skin is the color of young grass, and his hair that of pine boughs.

He wears a shining mithral breastplate, black explorer’s clothes, and a royal purple cloak over his shoulders.

Anyone have any suggestions for mundane equipment? Wouldn't think you'd need much in a bustling city, especially if you're not a weapon-user.

One of my problems is thinking about equipment that will survive our encounters.

While being buffed and sassy is one thing, wearing the stereo-typical 'chain mail bikini' because that's the only thing which will still be draped over the character at the end of a fight is just a tad... off putting... :P

Heck, Xane might have to spend double just to afford 'normal' things because of her size...

Reminds me of this XD

Much cheers to all.

Apparently if you change your alias name, it breaks all your old links. So here's a repost the link to Cassandra Cain as Batgirl.

Also, I just want to say that I do not envy Spooky's position for having to pick players. It looks like there are a lot of good entries. So good luck everyone!

The +2 is from the Synthesist Shielded Meld.

The mechanical reason for pumping dex is because gun-training applies the dex bonus to damage (from gun training at level 1 because of guns everywhere). The flavor reason is because the suit is extremely quick. I can't pump my mental stats with the bonuses from the suit, so they go into dex...

Ok, I hadn't realised Shielded meld covers ST's.

I still would move the Dex. High Dex just to get extra damage and ignore the basic character starts to smell cheesy. Your AC will probably still be more than enough to deal with anything you meet, and damage will still be high enough, and you will then have a character that stat-wise looks more like iron man.

I'd also look into getting some DR/magic (or better yet if you can get it DR/Adamantine). Don't know if that's practical, but it would be rather flavourful.

Yay crunch done again on Blade. Backstory to follow. Spooky I hope your ok with us changing small elements of the origin. I am combining the comic with the movie and anime. I have Blade being born in the Brothel but being picked up by Whistler as a baby as he was on Frost's trail then. Hope that cool. Anyways how long of a story do you want. I could write a short story about it but I don't know how much you want to read. Thanks.

That's a point. Is the amount of backstory on this Avatar's page enough? Does the DM/ Other players think there should be more?

Much cheers to all.
