@Avan: I feel for you man. As a player myself, I know the dreaded "Well, my chances just dropped" feeling. But, like I said, there is the last round for noon on Saturday, as well as the 'bonus character opt-in' I've now opened.

Hmmmm lets see both Sandru and koya have a number of arcane and skill characters unnder them so guessing the next character is going to be tough. I actually suspected that one of the oracles was going to be picked as shalelu's traveling companion since party balance demands it. Following all that the last spot will be the hardest to get since by that point party equilibrium would be already achieved.

Oooh boy. Starting to feel the pressure.

Or I could go full arcane past this <.<

Yes, the last spot will be very, very hard to pick. I'm already having my head spin from possible party builds.

And risk the ire of every skill monkey out there? You certainly don't lack courage Lugos...especially when we consider the savagery of the native skill monkey, I am still afraid of turning off all the lights after watching that documentary.

And the tension rises though the GM's last comment on Koya simply smashed my hopes lol. It was struggling to rise and then met the hammer. Now it's struggling to rise once more.....ooooohhhh Friday and Saturday.......

Congrats to the currently selected Characters.

So is any1 experienced in being a GM?
I dare to say that whoever won't make it would flock to a new thread.

Not just a matter of experience; said individual should also be willing to gm the ap in question.

That speaks for itself.

GM, I am sorry but to me it seems a little unfair to let everyone switch their campaign traits and backstories based on your picks. For instance, Sandru, my NPC, isn't picked until Saturday at Midnight. Which lets all the people who don't get picked before then switch their character around and flood one NPC.

Sovereign Court

Took up a WoTR thread and took up everyone who didn't get in meaning three tables. Don't think I can handle another AP.
Took over another Skull & Shackles AP too.

Not to say my Map making and token making skills need upgrading. lol

Good thing I never submitted a character... while I really appreciate people running games this is getting rather silly...

Congrats to Fenra!

The waiting is always the hardest part of these things. One thing I will say, though, GM Lugos, is that spreading out the announcements is a twist I have not seen. At the very least, it keeps me coming back and checking frequently. It is a neat take on the regular way of building the party.

Sovereign Court

Although I have to echo Kaaji's reservations on creating new entries. I for one can't rush out one just to be selected.

I agree that it may give rise to some other great applications but won't be fair to those already waiting to be selected and Suddenly the NPCs not announced gets swarmed with suddenly many new friends.

I have been looking to get in this AP for going on a year and a half (got in a couple but they died Very early, one even before all the PC's checked in)

even though Amieko was the first and I did not get in, I have not (and will not) change my application. the character I made was one that I have been wanting to play for this AP the whole time. (I would rather go unselected than try to play something I am not as enthused about just to get in)

Glad to see I am not the only one with that insight. I know my NPC for one has been swarmed, swelling from 3 PC's to 6 now. Just makes me think that my creativity and hard work will be overlooked due to dramatic numbers.

All right, here's my submission. It took a lot of time to complete, so if you think that it's utter rubbish, please don't tell it to me. :P

Background:

This ended up being a bit longer than 300 words... Hope you don't fall asleep in the middle of reading it. :P

Veaceslav never knew his biological parents. Perhaps he was orphaned, perhaps they just abandoned him. The exact circumstances are not of importance. What is important is that the lonely child was taken in by a pair of Varisians: the parents of Niska Mvashti, the mother of Koya Mvashti.

Despite being treated well and lovingly, there was one pain that his adoptive parents could not spare him from: The disparate speed of aging between elves and most other races. When came the time of their demise, Veaceslav was still, despite being decades old, still a child and unable to fend for himself. Thus Niska, though younger in age, had to take the responsibility of his care.

Veaceslav had always an emphatic child; He soon sensed that looking after him was taxing for Niska. Not wanting to burden her needlessly, he started making an effort in becoming more independent. For one reason or other, he ended up spending a lot time with all kinds of healers, assisting them in menial tasks and learning quite a bit about their craft in the process. It was during this time that the beginnings of an obession started to form in his mind: What if he could become the best healer ever known to Golarion? What if he could invent a cure to the wasting decay, not caused by a plague or an infection, but by the passing of years? What if he could discover a cure to the curse of ageing and avoid being destined to witness a beloved one after another die as centuries pass?

Years passed by, one after another. By the time that Koya was born, Veaceslav had been accepted as an apprentice of a medicine-maker, and had already learned much about the arts of healing. He still dreamt about inventing a way to stop ageing, but one day, something happened that caused him to turn away from trying to reach this goal by mundane means.

The young elf was taking care of a badly ill farmer. The man was in a serious condition, and it kept worsening despite all the medicines and herbs that Veaceslav administered to him. It seemed like the farmer was destined to die, but by sheer luck, a travelling holy man arrived to the room, having been told about the farmer's situation by locals. With nary a prayer, the cleric healed the sick man. Veaceslav was amazed: after all, his medicines had not had any effect.

Shortly after his hunderth birthday, he paid a visit to the just founded town of Sandpoint to say farewell to Niska and Koya, then left off to a far-away city, determined to become a cleric of Sarenrae, whom he figured to be the most capable healer of the multiverse: if it was possible to learn to cure ageing, it would be in her service. But as he studied under senior clerics, it started to seem to him that his dream was impossible. "It is not possible to extend one's lifespan beyond what Pharasma has deemed appropiate for them," they said. And Veaceslav believed them.

But even then he didn't give up his dream. If death was inevitable, the only way to live forever would be to live after dying: become an undead, in other words. But even that had its own problems, for example, the corruption that transition to undeath tends to afflict the soul with. Or the fact that many undead have unsavory habits, such as the eating of flesh or drinking of blood. Even if he would himself be desperate enough to overlook these problems, it would be unlikely that those close to him would, and he didn't wish to force anyone to do something against their wills. So the only option would be finding a way to cause undeath without causing the subject to turn into evil or cannibalism. Perhaps even dying would not be required, perhaps life and unlife could be combined into something that is more than the sum of its parts. Having found hope again from this train of thought, he started his research for immortality again, with a slightly different goal in mind.

When he returned to Sandpoint, he was suprised to see that Niska was still alive. She was overjoyed with seeing Veaceslav again and hearing that he had managed to become a cleric. (he hadn't the hear to tell her that he had switched goddesses along the way) But she also had a request for him: to accompany her daughter, Koya, and to keep her safe should she decide to make a long trip. Veaceslav found this request rather odd, but agreed anyway. In a few weeks' time, he lost yet another person who was important for him.

After Niska's death, he planned to leave Sandpoint for a larger city, but the promise he had made kept him from actually doing that. Instead, he decied to stay in Sandpoint for a while more, even though it may not be the best suited community for his purposes. While waiting to see what Koya ends up doing, he spends his nights in the common room of the Rusty Dragon and makes ends meet by occasionally providing cheap medical attention.

Personality:

For most people, Veaceslav comes off as mostly friendly, though perhaps sometimes a bit cynical. Regardless, he is very protective towards those that he deems friends. After all, it would be terrible if they went and died prematurely before he can discover a way to immortality, wouldn't it?

Veaceslav is fully aware of the heterodoxy of his own views, but it doesn't bother him as he sees himself less as a worshiper of Urgathoa than as a buisness partner. (Though he does respect her greatly) They might disagree with each other, but at least they both agree that being dead in not fun at all and that the lacking a pulse is a terrible reason not to enjoy life.

I decided to drop the Samsaran and instead work a different angle, though I'm still going for a Cleric. It will however be a cleric of the Tian god Yamatsumi instead of Tsukiyo.

The name is Iza M'Halen, a Lawful Neutral Oni Spawn Tiefling Cleric. If You allow the Theologian archetype that's what I will go with.

She is linked to Koya Mvashti via the Friend of the Family trait.

Background:
Iza was born far away on the Wall of Heaven in Tian Xia. Her parents, Oreads like the rest of their small community, were forced to leave their home upon her birth for she was born bearing the taint of the Oni. Knowing that that would make them unwelcome guests in all of Tian Xia they crossed the roof of the world with their newborn baby.

Reaching the other side of the treacherous area proved to be easier than expected as they had the luck to start their journey during the spring and finish it before the start of winter. Yet winter in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings where they landed wasn't much friendlier than it would have been on the Crown. Yet they travelled further south, seeking the seclusion of a mountain home like the one they had left behind. A place where they could raise their child to be the best she could, despite the curse running through her veins.

When they reached the Kodar Mountains they thought they had found what they sought; a large mountain range with high peaks and deep valleys. Their first choice of a home wasn't a success though as they found themselves chased of by a duo of young red dragons. Driven into the lowlands beyond the mountain range it wasn't long before they came into contact with other, more civilised inhabitants of the area. There they encountered a small caravan also hailing from the Land of the Linnorm Kings. Among this caravan was a Varisian Seer, a woman named Niska Mvashti. With her help they found a home within the Red Mountains of western Varisia.

In the years that followed they kept in touch with Niska and, once she was born, her daughter Koya who Iza lovingly called "little sister". Several times per year either the M'Halen family would visit the Mvashtis or the other way around. When Iza moved away from her parents and settled in the Malgorian Mountains about 30 years ago the connection between her and both the Mvashtis only became closer.

Now, with the recent departure of Niska Iza has temporarily moved to Sandpoint in order to stand by her life long friend.

Perhaps we could get some insight on what you find more important?
Is it Trait, back story, Build, posting frequency?

@Fenra

Congrats, but I noticed a few things about your character.

You used a 22 point Buy
Your back story was less than 200 words
You are giving yourself a +2 to damage on your bows, you can't apply your strength modifier unless it's a composite bow.

I have to agree. When I applied it was just me and another PC that wanted to be friends with Sandru. Now the deluge has been opened and the tension in being chosen especially with all of the new applicants that weren't there from the beginning is getting a bit silly. Why don't you just make your choices and be done? It hardly seems fair that people whose NPC still has to be chosen are going to wait to resubmit if they don't get chosen.

I really wanted to play this little gnome but these extra adds in are just silly.

Here is my submission.

  • Background (Adulthood):

Summary: Merchant indebted to a vengeful consortium head.

The last few years have been hard on Sybil Vekker. It all began when she learned about her father’s death in the Kodar mountains. She had last seen him when he came to their house in Magnimar to announcer her that soon they would be rich and could live well for the rest of the days.

The news of his demise came from a group of adventures who had discovered that her father and his expedition had been stuck in the mountains and driven to madness and cannibalism by a wendigo. The blow was very hard on Sybil for all the members of the expedition were either family, close friends or neighbours.

As the families of the members of the expedition left to go back to Janderhoff, Sybil stayed, alone, in Magnimar to cater to her jewelry shop. Things got even worst when Dorak an ancient rival to her dad came to claim her home and shop on the basis that her father had greatly indebted himself to his consortium to found his last expedition. Yet, the value of her estates was not enough to repay the debt so she had to employ herself to the dwarf.

Throughout the following years, times were hard, due to an ancient enmity between Dorak and her father (see childhood background), her new boss would always send her on perilous jobs. First in the mines, then in Varisia as a travelling merchant. As she travelled, she had the chance to meet two old friends, Niska and Koya Mvasthi. It is during these dark times that she promised to Niska to follow her daughter if she ever went on a long trip.

Yet, it seems that this would never happen, for Dorak had grown tired of bullying her around and knew that a lifetime of services would never buy her freedom. Thus, he decided to send her on an impossible quest, go to fabled land of Tian-Xia and bring him back jewels that could only be found there. Whether she succeeded or died did not matter to him: either way he would get what he wants, money to repay the debt or her death.

As a last goodbye to Varisia, Sybil decided to head for Sandpoint, she had to explain to Niska that she could never fulfill her promise for she would herself go on a long perilous journey. As she arrived to Sandpoint, she learned that Niska had passed away. This only worsened Sybil’s condition, for she would have to break a promise (which was already demanding) made to a deceased woman (which truly made to whole thing horrific).

    Background (Childhood):

Summary: On how does Sybil learned the mining trade, became and alchemist and met Koya and Niska.

Sybil was born in Janderhoff but soon left for Magnimar with her parents and a number of members from her family. Together, they established a small clan in Magnimar and entered the precious stones and metals business. The family was quite successful, some women, children and elderly would stay in town while the rest went to different part of Varisia to mine the stones and ores.

Times were good until Dorak (a powerful dwarf once betrothed to her mother) came to town. Around this time, Sybil’s mother felt sick. Her husband went to every priests and doctors. Unfortunately, Dorak had bribed them to overcharge for he wanted to shame Sybil’s dad by being the one who would heal his wife. Luckily, Madam Mvasthi and her daughter were in town. Refusing any payment from the clan, they took care of Sybil’s mother and brought her back to health. Unfortunately, she died in a freak accident a few weeks later.

To avoid the grief caused by the passing of his wife, Sybil’s father set himself upon repaying Niska and Koya’s kindness. For the remaining decades, he mined gold in extremely dangerous conditions. He would visit the Mvasthi every year in Sandpoint to give his thanks and meagre savings. During these times, Sybil would accompany to meet with Koya, whom she had befriended.

As for Sybil, she found solace in forging a strong relation with her father. At first, she accompanied him on his expedition, slowly learning the trade. It is during that time that she met an alchemist who had been hired to help the mining trade. From him, she learned how to use alchemy to enhance her senses and find good mining spots (as well as scout for gas leaks in the mines).

Has Sybil worked, she realised that she could make the extraction of the ores much faster if she studied alchemy enough. Thus, she returned to Magnimar hoping she would come up with a way of making the processing faster which would in turn help her father repay his debt faster. To make money for her research, she became a merchant for the clan, selling the stones and ores that her father had mined.

    General personality:

Summary: Friendly, trustworthy, nice female dwarf (almost an oxymoron).

Sybil is as loyal as a dwarf can be (if not more) she puts the wellbeing of her friend, clan and family above all else. Promises are of outmost importance to her for they reflect her integrity and her clan.

Unlike most dwarves, Sybil is surprisingly friendly. She is always smiling and never gruff. This mostly comes from years of interacting with humans and trying to raise her father’s spirit.

All the specific information that is missing will be put in an alias by tonight.

Lol, quite okay (if selected, I will still roleplay the drawback, it actually is already placed in the backstory of Sybil). I decided on another one which still fits the character.

For the record, I did choose one. Unfortunately for me it was Shalelu as a younger sibling. Now I guess I will guess I will go with raised by Koya for a +2 on Nature checks. For my backstory, edit to say Shalelu brought me to Koya to be raised. Koya taught Garrack and raised him as her own. His strong bond and loyalty is to Koya, not Shalelu.

As for my ability scores, reduce Dex to 10 and raise Cha to 8 so everything is correct. Also change armor to Hide Armor to compensate.

I appreciate everyones concerns on the way I've decided to choose from the list of potential characters, and I can understand your concerns. But know that my choices are never finalized until minutes before a choice is picked. I weigh everyones characters and hold them as equal as possible before my decision is written and submitted.

The extra character opt-in is there for those who wish to use it. I've seen it used before to great success. But I also understand and acknowledge the fear that the extra characters will drown out the other 'first' characters. Please know that I know those issues well. And the second character need not have a trait for Koya and Sandru, they could just as readily be for Ameiko or Shalelu.

Can this lead to issues? Yes. But then again, any number of things could lead to issues. I've seen characters who were chosen get kicked out of games or leave them for minor issues such as misunderstandings or they blew up into little drama bombs.

No selection is finalized until I deem it neccesary. As for what weighs most in my decision choices? A mix of all options that mesh to create a great character. Backstory with trait, traits modifying stats to reflect choices and background. And pist frequency during recruitment helps because it shows interest in the campaign.

tl;dr - My game, my decision on recruitment. It may seem cruel, but ultimately my own choice. Though next time, I'll probably shorten the application time and not do tge choice/day option.

Yeah, but if the second character is Sandru or Koya, they get two chances to be picked. There's no reason for people not to pick those two unless it absolutely doesn't fit their character concept.

Post frequency during recruitment? I have to say that I find that to be a somewhat odd metric. Lurkers beware, apparently.

Don't get me wrong, as the GM you have every right to exclude or include whomever you care to, but I would wager a fair number of people have been checking back repeatedly and not saying much (or maybe it's just me) -- so I don't think whether or not we posted another "Oh boy, can't wait" is the best way to measure interest... or to predict in-game posting frequency.

    Just my two cents.

I have to say I am also slightly concerned about double application, but at the same time, it seems to me that if someone is able to whip up a completely new character, and, most importantly, a really interesting one, in a single day, they might be a good choice to play in a PbP.

Of course, if someone just builds a quick one without much interest in its background (and links it to a random NPC), then it seems simply opportunistic...

I'm happy with Daniel as he is, but keeping the fingers crossed.

As long as the GM takes the time to weigh all the characters equally, it doesn't really matter how many apply to a single PC. I still feel somewhat like my chances are lessened by the amount of people who are flocking to Koya and Sandru, but I made a character that I like, and her choices in skills and traits reflect her backstory very well, so I think she has a fair chance at being selected. As for posting frequency in a recruitment tread, I noticed a long time ago that the people that post frequently in the recruitment are usually the ones that post frequently in the game. Note, I said usually. So basically, just ride it out. If you get picked, that's awesome. If not, just apply for another game. No biggie. :)

Having spent my lunch talking with my former GM (well, more like seeking sage advice), he has convinced me (threatened me) into this compromise: characters may continue to be submitted until midnight tonight where I will announce for both Koya and Sandru, and player 5 at noon tomorrow. And trust me, I'll need until noon to figure who'll be player 5 (and hide from my former GM :p ).

Also, lurkers need not beware: Their chances are still good, I just like knowing people are eagerly anticipating the choices.

Also, because I will be picking two, the time I post my selection may be a little past midnight (central time), but no later than 12:30.

    Just a heads up.

    GM Lugos wrote:
And pist frequency during recruitment helps because it shows interest in the campaign.

And what am I supposed to post about? Stress over not being chosen on the first pass? Number-crunching other people's submissions? Critiquing other people's play style, writing style, or build choices?

If you want to use posting during recruitment, open an IC interaction in the discussion thread. Telling us at this point that not creating chatter to make it harder to see the rest of the applications counts against us amazes me!

Being polite, not abusing other players, not trying to police submissions on your behalf, and watching the thread is considered a lack of interest in the game? My apologies for not being that self-centered and self-serving, then.

If I'm not selected because I'm trying to be considerate and you have determined in your head that considerate behavior is the same as not being interested, well, we were probably a bad match in the first place.

While I do not disagree GM that is it your game and your process of picking, I think that in order to be fair to all that are involved that this information about submitting and resubmitting should have been related to the group at the beginning. Changing rules through out the process really isn't fair to those who began with one set of rules only to have a bait and switch occur. Of course, by brining up these concerns we have probably been excluded from the final pick but at these concerns should be noted.

    Lou still likes Amieko.

Here are some sketches he made while working at the Rusty Dragon

a quick sketch during some down time during the Shadowtail festival

a nicer one when I finally got her to pose

    some kids from around Sandpoint

a quick sketch on Lou's sister Noro in her youth - don't tell her I have this

Okay, I think that's about 5:30 my time, so I guess I'll find out after dinner. *frets* Here's hoping Koya doesn't get too flooded in the meantime!

GM FIAT!!! Haha, I understand your point of view Lugos. Each GM has his own flavor and if anything you have forced a multitude of people to try and come up with genuine and unique characters. Most of us, at least myself and hustonj probably, just wanted to bring our concern to you about our characters being passed up because of the NPC swapping going on. No offense to your style or methods was intended.

With Sandru being picked tonight, I can only hope to wake up in the morning and see my name being revealed as the candidate. It really just goes to each player writing a good backstory and using the campaign traits like you had asked to build off the backstory. With that being said, there are quite some interesting stories that go with the campaign traits. Kaaji just hopes to work with some good people and bring honor to them.

For what it's worth, I'd always planned to go with the Foster Child trait but it took me a few days to get everything done due to work and needing some GM clarifications on archetypes. I like the character I have though, so no plans to modify her or make a new one.

It's more time-intensive, but if you're wanting to get an idea of enthusiasm and posting frequency, maybe check people's profiles and read a little on any other PbPs they're participating in or games they're DMing?

I feel I must put in my opinion here. First rule of getting into a PBP do NOT tick of the GM. If you whine alot this is an indication of how you will play the game and GM's do not want to go to all the work of running an adventure path to hear you whining the whole time.

Second Rule of getting into an PBP. Please remember all of the work that goes into running something like this, Setting up the maps, picking the group and making sure it balanced etc. If the GM wants to have a little fun by taking his or her time picking the people then I think he(she)should do as they like and enjoy themselves.

Now I will sit back and wait and cross my fingers that the GM will decide my character is the best choice!

Raising valid concerns is not the same thing as trying to tick off the GM Lativa. It keeps communication open and gives both players and DMs another point of view. If that means not being picked for someting than so be it.

And here is Iza in full

This version is assuming you do not allow the Theologian archetype. If you do allow it Protection domain will be dropped, Str will go down to 14 while Int will go up to 13, Power Attack will be replaced by Spell Focus (Evocation), Hp will go up by 1 as Favored Class Bonus is changed from 1 skill point to +1 HP and for prepared spells Divine Favor will be replaced by a second Burning Hands.
