@Apex: I was just looking at your character, and noticed they were a Sylph. Sylphs are cool, but not a permitted race for this campaign.

Just a heads up...

GM Lugos wrote:
@Cuan: What do you mean by varient channeling? As in the feats or through an archetype?

Ultimate Magic presents an option for a different Channel Energy in it's bit on the Cleric. It isn't really an archetype but it does tread close to archetype territory.

The PRD has it here

EDIT: To be precise I'm interested in the Madness channel.

Variant channeling was introduced in Ultimate Magic and allows you to use channel energy to generate some minor harmful or buffing effects at the price of less healing.

I'm working on a half Orc Evangelist. Not quite sure on a deity. I kind of like Gozreh as that would fit for a wild type of guy who is maybe part Shoanti but Evangel seems more suited to Deities with a mission and Gozreh being all neutral and such might not quite fit in there...

Yeah, I posted in my first post that I could change her to a samsaran to fit the reqs. The backstory will stay the same. At work posting from my phone so some things are harder to edit than others.

Gnick Gnack Paddywack is about 3 feet tall with spiky blue hair. He does not have a beard as he is afraid that it might catch fire during one of his blendings of various materials and he always wears his goggles, just to be safe. He doesn't want to be reminded, as he was as a young gnomeling, when he told other gnomes that he wanted to build x or y, he was always being told ,"You'll shoot your eye out, kid." The lesson stuck so he wears his goggles. You can't be too safe. He is very excitable, as his lessons in the lab have shown him that a slow poke gets a fast blow up.

Learning about all he could on alchemical things and mastering how to make tanglefoot bags and sticky glue as he calls it, he wanted to learn how to make gnome fire which he has dubbed the more well known alchemists fire, since as an alchemist and a gnome he thinks he should master. He has recently learned how to make this item. He goes around community to community learning about poisons, other alchemical things, as well as herbalism.

In his journies he traveled to Varisia to see what new and exciting things he could discover and learn about. He traveled to the town of Sandpoint after the invasion by giants. He soon found himself to be friends with a travelling merchant by the name of Sandru. They became fast friends and drinking buddies, as they compared stories of their travels, some true and others not so much.

Does this backstory help?

@Gnick: Much better. So you'll be taking the Best Friend (Sandru) trait?

Varient channeling, as outlined in the PRD is okay.

@Apex: Also on phone at work. Sorry, I missed your comment on the whole Samsaran deal. That seems fine for now.

no questions for Lou, wonder if that is good or bad?

Just a heads up, I may go with aasimar. I'll have to look at the racial traits and whatnot before I make up my mind for sure

Okay, decided to run with the Samurai protector bit.

Fujihiro Dun, human Samurai

Backstory Sketch:
Fujihiro Dun's earliest memories are of his father's stories. They involved creatures unlike any in Varisia, called Oni, and the fact that some Oni were trying to kill the Kaijutsus. The Kaijutsus had settled into Sandpoint, changing their name and hiding the secrets of their birth. Fujihiro Akodo had come with them, having promised to protect their lives with his own.

When it became clear that the Kaijutsus were going to remain in Sandpoint, Akodo sought out a local bride so that he could train the next generation of protector for the next generation of the family.

Akodo stayed with Ameiko's father and older brother when she went adventuring, but Dun was too young to go with her. It was a risk that had to be accepted, because there were no other survivors with whom to split the duties, and two needed the protection more than one.

Akodo's stories built up an image of the Kaijutsus in Dun's mind that any real person would be very hard pressed to live up to. They were literally painted as larger than life figures, working hard to hide behind these lesser caricatures that they were hoping would prove enough to keep their true identities secret. One thing Akodo was very careful about, was that he never told Dun who the Kaijutsus really are, why the Oni are after them, or why their survival was important enough for their own family to be dedicated to nothing else.

Akodo has spent the past many years working as a smith, an artisan working arms and armor when there is a need, or spare time, but focusing on the simpler items required for the daily lives of those around them.

As Dun grew, Akodo taught him the methods and tools the family had used to protect the lives of the Kaijutsus. Providing him training in weaponry and techniques very rare in Varisia, and teaching him to wear Akodo's own battlefield armor. This armor is in marvelous repair, as should be expected of the smith's own armor, but it bears none of the marks of clan or family that someone familiar with the social niceties around such armor would expect.

While practicing during an early Spring evening, Akodo said something that Dun hadn't expected. “While you have much experience to gain, your training is as complete as I can make it. You are now truly Samurai. You have accepted your obligation to protect those calling themselves Kaijutsu, now down to just Ameiko. Should their secret come to light, only then can you publicly declare your servitude, using our true family name, Daidoji. I can not risk her safety by revealing what I know. You can not risk her safety by advertising our true name unless her secret is revealed. If it is, you will know. If this comes to pass, our true name can only help.”

Then they went back to their daily lives, to simply being a part of Sandpoint, watching and waiting in case they would need to reveal themselves. Dun, continuing to watch Ameiko from afar, always feeling as though he is stargazing, but never understanding why.

For now, Dun has access to some of his father's back-up equipment. A simpler set of armor and a normal quality blade.

The stuff in the second spoiler is pretty free-form, because I do character generation by hand. I try to mark out the sections required to use the character and to figure out how the build was made in order to provide as much clarity as possible.

@Lou: I only ask questions when I'm confused. The only thing I'm curious about is you have Minatan as a language yet have the Quain Martial Artist trait, all while living in/around Sandpoint. While I can understand the trait mostly, the language throws me a little since to the best of my knowledge Minata, the Wandering Isles is a land of pirates, Wayangs and minor cults and tribes.

@Apex: Eagerly anticipating your choice.

@hustonj: Nice concept and background!

That probably should be just Tien (his father was Tien, his mother a varisian Gypsy) he learned Tien from his father as well as the Quain style with his father as his master. it may have been missed in the transfer from my older text file into the profile.

Lou has been through many iteration over the past year and a half as I have been trying to get into a Jade Regent game that whole time changing the profile each time to meet the new character creation guidelines.

@Lou: Ah! Okay, an easy fix.

The tension mounts, oh what a feeling!

Lantern Lodge

Here's my character application for this game. It's been a long time since I've done a PbP, with real life grinding my skull into the pavement with her dark and gritty boot, but here's a character I'm fairly excited about.

I have the Sword Saint archetype applied to him because I don't have an interest in dragging a horse through dungeons or keeping track of horse points. Let me know if that's okay, and if it's not, I'll go back to the drawing board. :)

Ishikawa Kaijutsu:

Ish is short and lithe, wrapped in corded muscle. He carries a family heirloom of the Kaijutsu family on his hip in a Varisian patterned waistband-- an old, worn katana. Long strands of black hair obscure a boyishly handsome face, running beyond his shoulders and tied back with a colorful cloth. Always friendly and always kind, Ish acts definitively on his feelings-- sometimes perhaps too quickly to have thought them through.

Ish is Ameiko's youngest brother. He thinks of himself as an adventurer-- someone who's ready to be swept up into an adventure like the ones bards sing about, living large and leaving a mark on the world. Sandpoint is a small town-- when he's older, Korvosa or Magnimar, for sure! Stuck in Sandpoint isn't how he wants to live his life-- his worst fear is ending up neurotic and tyrannical like his father.

Ish tries to live up to his sister's and his family's expectations by being helpful-- at what changes on a moment-to-moment basis. Cooking, cleaning, negotiating with merchants, handling guests at the Rusty Dragon, wrestling drunks and winning card games all fall into the purview of his day-to-day tasks. Ish is a jack-of-all trades, really.

Training with the sword is his way to stay active. After witnessing first-hand what a goblin could do to someone his age with just a rock, he decided that he would never be too afraid to take action again. He spends long hours meditating-- more like thinking, the opposite of meditating-- and walking the outskirts of the town, helping others with odd jobs and generally being a wistful young man who should have long ago applied for an apprenticeship.

Ish is young and childish, but dreams big. He thinks he's more clever than he is and definitely enjoys basking in the attention of others. Arrogant is too formal-- he's just cocky. Ishikawa has a lot of growing up to do.

You’ve lived your whole life in the shadow of your older sibling, a person who seems to have the adventure-filled lifestyle you’ve always wanted for yourself. While your sibling always took care of you, he or she never supported your desire to become an adventurer—your sibling never explained why, only saying, “Adventuring can cause a lot of pain just as easily as it can bring success and riches.”

You gain a +1 trait bonus on all attack rolls against foes that threaten your older sibling as well as one of the following: You gain a +1 trait bonus on Will saving throws.

You are always on the lookout for reward and danger. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Perception checks, and Perception is always a class skill for you.

He needs some tweaking, but may I present my summoner?

Dang. Didn't know about the Sword Saint archetype. I looked on the Paizo site for Samurai archetypes. It isn't in the PRD.

Ah, well.

Edit:

Then again, I kinda like the banner abilities and don't DISLIKE the animal companion Mount. It would have been an interesting decision to make.

I don't see any need to rework the character.

Nightdeath stepped in and took over as a replacement judge for a game I'm playing ("And the Devil Will Drag You Under" - Skulls & Shackles).

Kinda hard for me to be anything but appreciative, ya know?

I did the same for a free roaming pirate campaign, and it's a blast. The players are just awesome.

Also how detailed can we get regarding past actions with the NPC's?

No worries,

By the way GM Lugos,

How far into Kingmaker are you? My regular Pathfinder group has been running that AP for quite some time and we are having an awesome go of it.

We are about 40, 2-3 hour sessions in to it. Somewhere in book 3.

If this is the first Kingmaker you've run and you would like some insight on what players may do, hit me up in a PM, or take a look at our adventure log here.

GM Lugos: is the Preacher archetype available for Inquisitor?

Working on the fluff and crunch for Mi'isha Kam, a Tiefling Inquisitor. Should be able to post it tomorrow evening. Will take one of the Koya traits (likely Friend of the family)

@nightdeath: Thank you very much! I was doing everything by phone for most of the day, and I appreciate the assistance on that!

@Ishikawa: Nice build! So few people tend to go with younger sibling (Ameiko) for some reason...

@Lativa: Well, besides some interesting names for your parents, everything checks out.

@Apex: So few people pick Samsaran! Finally happy to see someone go with it. Everything seems to check out under my preliminary check except one thing: Chaotic Good worshipper of Pharasma? Usually people are one step away from devotion, so I'd be interested in learning how you came to choose them as your deity.

@Ray: Interesting background story, but yes, tweaking is needed. I also want the stats for Lobo, since you are a summoner and I assume that they are your eidolon.

@Armond: Sorry I missed you man, it happens, right? Good background. I like the whole 'making amends' angle.

@Xentik: Preacher is accepted!

Whoops! That was supposed to be chaotic neutral. Glad you caught it.

Backstory:

When Garrak was a lad, he traveled with his parents, both half orcs, in a trade caravan. His father was responsible for the horses and his mother played the part of a healer and herbalist. They lived a simple and happy life, traveling throughout the inner sea with caravans. Both trained him in their skills, his father teaching him how to work a caravan and how to handle weapons, and his mother teaching him of nature and a bit about natural magics and survival. But this would not last forever. When passing near Sandpoint, their caravan was attacked by a horde of goblins. The caravan was overwhelmed, with goblins killing everything in sight. His father and mother managed to get him away from the fight, but went back to help the others, forcing him to hide in a tree while they tried to fight the goblins off, telling him to stay in that tree until they returned.

Garrak did stay in that tree. For days, waiting and waiting for his parents to return. But they did not. However, by chance Shalelu did. She found the poor ten year old starving, but he would not leave. He refused to believe that his parents were dead. It was not until Shalelu brought back their bodies that he left. The two buried them under that tree.

Ever since that day, Garrak has barely left her side. For the past 12 years he has trained with her, scouted with her, and lived with her. They became like siblings and were rarely seen in Sandpoint apart.

Garrak stands at 6 and a half feet tall with pale blonde hair and light grey skin. His tusks are unusually large for a half orc. He typically dresses in furs and hides. Garrak is a quiet man, rarely speaking unless spoken to, and even then it's iffy if he responds. He often forgets simple social graces. He is fiercely protective of his adoptive sister, and does not take kindly to threats against her. He has little regard for law, but he doesn't flout it. He tries to help people when he can.

Here.

I'm guessing the main tweak would be how he got to/why he's in Sandpoint? I'm thinking about the Rescued(Shalelu) trait.

And now I'm waffling about childhood crush or hero worship. Either could fit. The majority of the hero worship bonus should never apply, but it feels more "right."

Bio

Spoiler:

My name is Daniel, just Daniel now. I have forsaken my last name to avoid any persuers my family might send after me.
How did i end up where i am now? Heh, a long and eventful story i must say it is. It all started in Magnimar.

My family moved from the Chelaxian empire into Varisia to the city of Magnimar. My father became a known art professor in Magnimar's academy.
Father had this obsession with art, down to the most revolting aspect, an aspect i had always hated.
See the thing with many Chelaxians is they worship Asmodeus. The family aside from myself was no different. I guess the "fiery lord" never appealed to me, the only thing i had in common with the family was the blood and a desire for order.
But order can even be achieved even without rules, contribute doing what you're good at and society functions on itself...it used to be my motto.

As a child i knew i was an outsider, with the family worshiping Asmodeus indoors, i always snuck away and went to the cavalry stables. The horses were magnificent, strong and kind.
Joining the Magnimar cavalry was my dream, to have a group that accepts you, riding a horse and see Varisia's lands when they're sent on a mission. Oh i got scorned for it so many times.

My parents expected me to "get over this delusion", there was no social status to being with the cavalry. Their ranting never discouraged me though, i just kept silent.
On my 18th birthday i had finished studies, but opposed to the expected college and family traditions of becoming reknown scholar or professor i signed up for the cavalry immediately.
I trained with the society and cavalry as trainee. I was found out/
This did not fall well with the family, as i would find out, the banquet that would turn my world upside down forever.

My parents, uncles, aunts, cousins. All 20 of us at a big round table. Of course the story of the rebellious son was known.
That's when my father spoke:
"Son, in front of the family, i offer you one last chance. Follow your family's traditions or face a dire consequence."
I refused, "hell, never! I'm not like you, worshiping a some horned freak."
The family rose with an eerie silence and fury in the eyes.......i was in trouble, though i hadn't got a damned clue how much.

I was tied down to the table while my father was painting signs to the devils all around me.
My head was held tight so i wouldn't see what they were doing till the very end. Under an unholy chanting, my father used a knife to make markings on my chest.
Letting some of the released blood unto the markings the smell of brimstone some 12 feet away started to fill the room.
A hideous toughskinned devil wielding a whip came up. Who summoned me, herald of lord Asmodeus?
<My son, a Chelaxian refuses to worship lord Asmodeus, even calling him a freak. I offer him as our sacrifice this year."
The devil looked at me with a wicked smile. Most amusing, we'll accept, we'll make him suffer in a most wicked way.

I was cut loose and tried to get up, but the whip gripped me and i was dragged into the abbyss.
When i came to i was with others, dressed in rags. Asking what was going on got me a look filled with fright. The herald was standing in front of us.
Welcome to your damnation mortals. You will all be dealt tasks which you will be relieved from for breaks. Breaks for eating and torture, there is no need to sleep down here.
The devils knew i had affinity with animals, so they assigned me to working with hellbeasts. We had a thin strap of leather tied around our waists. Around it a spikey chain with which we were to hold down a hellbeast, guiding it to the training area. It took much effort from 8 of us to hold a minor in place.
The breaks were as unpleasant as the job.

==Drawback trait==
We were strapped down and flogged with burning whips. Nothing is as hot as hellfire. It left permanent burnscars on my back.
====
I endured, eventually the devils saw i would be of more use aiding in training the minor beasts. I got used to mildly dodging a bite and being capable of wielding the dreaded chain better.
When working with hellbeasts you get to use the chain with two hands, it toughens your muscles too.

My deliverance from hell came from an unexpected source. Like with humans, even devils like to trick eachother. One in particular, Hellbach. This one was less of a physique than a manipulator.
He was bored being confined in the abbyss. Stories of the arriving damned are like gossip, they are known within the hour after you arrive.
<You there, family deserter, come here! I have aproposal for you.>
What are you saying devil?
<See, us devil handlers are stuck down here, contrary to the warriors. I wish to know what wonders are on the surface and you can help me.>
What? Why would i help a devil?
<Because i can send you back...interested? You get back up there, live your life to it's fullest and i get to see your memories when you are dead. The curse ends if either of us dies, but what are the chances of me dying?>
My desire to get to live was great. The devil started a riot and used it to send me back to Varisia.
Not one day after my return a portal opened up as i was traveling. A devil wielding a spiked chain came after me. They had seen through the riot and killed Hellbach, coming to tie up loose ends.
It was a lesser luckily, i managed to kill it, claiming the chain as my own. A grim reminder of my enslavement.

==Campaign trait==
A few days later 2 assassins hire by my family found me, seems my family had gotten a visit, telling them of my presense in Varisia. Grabbed and held, as i was about to be gutted an arrow struck the man down, the other one as well.
A graceful elven woman was standing with a bow.
Why save a man who's come back from hell? It didn't matter to me, she treated me kindly, what i needed after all of this. Nowhere to go i swore i would follow and aid her as long as i would live. A lifedebt i am content with.

But the curse left it's marks on me. My eyes lost color and my voice has a 2nd tone to it.

Appearance & personality

Spoiler:

Daniel is a young 21 year old man. His most striking features, leftovers from a devil's curse to get back to Varisia, are his double toned voice and colorless eyes which seem to shimmer when he's angry. Though not glowing enough to be perceivable lights. The tip of a burn scar can be seen at the back of his neck.

Daniel is level headed and good by heart, but his life experiences have left him in the neutral zone of world views.
He has a bit of a rebellious temper, having an issue with arrogant authoritarian people. Having spent a long time in hell has left him somewhat reserved towards people he doesn't know.
He likes animals, horses especially.
His life saved by the elven NPC, he's sworn loyalty to her and is determined to see her safe.
Can't blame a man who's escaped from hell for that....

Grand Lodge

LOL no problem I changed their names to something better.

@Ishikawa: Nice build! So few people tend to go with younger sibling (Ameiko) for some reason...

Thank you! I don't know why, either. It has a lot of fun implied.

One thing I didn't realize is that I left an old artifact of my home games on my sheet: human "racial" language. ie, Varisian, Skald, or in this case Minkaian. I should probably remove it to be legal.
