About Parsifal FoghainParsifal Foghain, Half-Elven Paladin of Abadar 1 [Lawful Good] ------------------------ Appearance -----------------------
------------------------ History -----------------------
Angelica was rejected by her fiance and his entire family, who took away her livelihood and her reputation. She spent years taking small side-work where she could get it in order to feed herself and her new son, feeling shame from the dark whispers that followed her and the menial tasks she had to accept, despite her education. Being all-but penniless and friendless, Angelica sent letters to the boy's real father, an elven merchant from Korvosa, for coin with which to raise the boy, and meanwhile, took advantage of all the charity she could - sending her son to the orphanage during the day to be educated. She both loved and resented her son, the source of her joy and her shame all at once... and so, Parsifal's childhood was complicated. Finally, when Parsifal was 14, Angelica received a response from the boy's father, who had paid the boy's tuition to study as a mage in Magnamar. This was not what she had hoped for, and her resentment and bitterness came to a head. She told him that he had ruined her life and that she never wanted to see him again, and put him on a ship to Magnamar. Parsifal was deeply hurt by this, but also somewhat hopeful, as he had never really felt like he fit in anywhere, and always felt as though something was calling to him -- something he couldn't place. Unfortunately, Parsifal's time in study was not what he had expected. While the boy had a decent enough mind to learn, he lacked the will and drive to learn magic.. and worse, he lacked the aptitude. Still, as his studies were being paid for, he was allowed to keep trying... however, after his third year his father decided to cut his losses and cut him off. Still having a dim sense of being called to something, Parsifal wandered through the City aimlessly, trying to determine what to do, ending up in front of the Church of Abadar. Taking this to be a sign, he went in immediately, and joined a lay-order and began training. While the clergy was somewhat unsure of the boy, they allowed him to take his vows and to work as a guardsman while he proved himself [Trait: Eyes and Ears of the City]. Ultimately, after six months, they accepted him and allowed him to train to be a Warrior in the service of Abadar. Over the next two years, Parsifal learned to fight, and the catechisms of the Lord of the First Vault. On the day he was to join the Guard of Magnamar, however, his past came back to him: Sheriff Hemlock had arrived in Magnamar, looking for men to help Sandpoint as it dealt with a "goblin problem". Tinges of homesickness combined with a desire to protect his home town, and so Parsifal joined the Sheriff's mission. Unfortunately, Parsifal took ill upon his return to the town of his birth, developing a fever that most thought would kill him. As a result of this, he missed most of the action as a small band of heroes led by Shelelu went to Thistletop. While in the throes of his fever-dreams, Parsifal dreamed of servants of Abadar asking him why he had been ignoring them. He was confused by these questions, and agreed to listen for them more carefully. As he made that vow, the call he'd been sensing all his life finally became clear to him. He felt surges of warmth and self-confidence surge through him, giving him a sense of righteousness and purpose that he had always known were lacking. When he awoke, he was a Paladin. In the celebration following the defeat of the goblins of Thistletop, Parsifal met Shelelu for the first time, and developed a degree of hero worship for her deeds, and a bit of a crush as well. [Trait: Hero Worship (Shelelu)] Since then, Parsifal has served in the Sandpoint militia, and done whatever he can to be closer to Shelelu, volunteering to assist her when possible, and even going so far as to going to the Rusty Dragon whenever there were rumours she was about. After making a few quiet inquiries, Parsifal learned that his mother had left town years before, having gone off to Cheliax with a new suitor. He's been with the militia ever since, but recently, he has begun to wonder why he was called to be here -- he missed out on the chance to save the town, and so, surely Abadar must have something in mind?
