Pre-scouting healing on Adolina!

CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

3 CLW charges remain . . . we should buy a new one soon! Also 8 charges of CMW remain.

After healing, Adolina is at 95/104 by my estimation (which may be off). By my estimation, it is about 170ft from the hags lair to the ruined shrine. At a 20' move speed and double moving, that will take 4+ rounds to cover the gap.

Abandoned Shrine - Round 1 - concluded

Playing it safer this time, Adolina calls out the shape in the shrine, throwing out the names of Lamatar and his nymph lover, Myriana. Despite all that, the shape only groans in reply, no comprehension showing on its ruined face.

Cadas init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Robin Init: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20

When you can see the creature, you can try the below knowledge checks.

Know Religion DC 14+:
The creature that used to be the ranger commander is now a frost wight, an undead creature of high power and danger. It has all the same traits as all undead: resistance to effects that require a Fort save, immune to mind-affecting, etc. They also have the cold subtype and are immune to cold.

Know Religion DC 19+:
Frost wights also can drain energy from their victims, creating negative levels with a single touch unless the victim saves. This frost version also emits an aura of cold that damages any creature touching it either with natural or light weapons or being touched by the wight.

Know Religion DC 24+:
Frost wights are vulnerable to resurrection which destroys them. And to fire, which does extra damage.

Abandoned Shrine - Round 2

27 Lamatar
23 Adolina
20 Robin (130' away)
6 Cadas (130' away)

Finishing up whatever casting ritual it began, the undead shape begins moaning and casting another spell.

Spellcraft DC 16, Adolina only:
This spell is resist energyy.

He has not moved or made an aggressive threat. Rest of the party is up now. I did update the battle map. I am moving the token on the overview map to correspond where the rest of the party is in relation.

Don't forget Marcellano's initiative!

Robin dashes along as fast as he can manage. Run action, moving 80 feet.

As the wright continues to avoid aggressive moves Adolina does likewise, preferring to have back-up before starting another fight.

PAss, and keep my distance!

Abandoned Shrine - Round 2 - continued

While the icy Lamatar casts some type of spell, Adolina waits silently, hoping her allies arrive before that thing springs into action.

Robin hurries along trying to close in on Adolina. Marcellano lopes along beside the halfling jester.

Will give Cadas until next check in, in case she wants to try something different. Then I will DM-PC her.

Cadas runs along with Robin as well, concerned about the noise they are making.

Abandoned Shrine - Round 3

27 Lamatar
23 Adolina
20 Robin (90' away)
10 Marcellano (90' away)
6 Cadas (90' away)

Finishing up whatever ghostly spell he was chanting, Lamatar gazes at Adolina with a brilliant blue malevolence in his eyes. He unslings a wicked looking bow from his back and turns and fires at the shadowy companion. Firing three shots, two hit Shadowlina causing her some damage including from an icy chill.

I think Shadowlina takes cold damage if from magical source at half. If so, she takes 11 dmg, if not she takes 7. All the good guys are now up.

Lamatar bow, shot 1: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (10) + 16 = 26

Undead are immune to cold damage aren't they?

Seeing the undead attacking her companion Adolina leaps into action, racing forward to smash her glaive into the foe, hissing a challenge as she does so.

Charge, Challenge: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 16 + 2 = 23 Damage, inc. Challenge: 1d8 + 20 ⇒ (4) + 20 = 24

AC 25 this round, the charging and the challenge bonus balance out.

Shadowlina floats in behind to try and drain the creatures strength.

Touch Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26 Str Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Adolina d'Jhaltera wrote:

I thought so too, but didn't see it specificially listed in undead traits or under shadow. Immune to effects requiring a Fort save (so some cold effects would be immune) but this weapon damage does not require a save. Far as I can tell, she takes it all (well, halved for being a shadow, which is already in the calculation.)

Abandoned Shrine - Round 2 - continued

Robin rushes on, trying to close the distance quickly. He gets there in time to see Adolina in battle with a horrifying remnant of Lamatar.

Adolina charges striking out with her glaive, but the weapon caroms off the wight's spell-hardened form.

Shadowlina touches the wight, and drains a modicum of strength from him, but as she does, his own frosty form deals damage aback to her.

Cold dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Shadowlina takes 3 in cold damage back after touching Lamatar. Looking for action from Cadas, and I'll run Marcellano when round is complete otherwise.

Cadas moves again with Robin wondering about the wisdom of letting the scout get so far ahead.

Abandoned Shrine - Round 2 - concluded

Worried about Adolina, Cadas keeps up with Robin and Marcellano who jogs along beside the others, wondering what kind of mess they will find this time.

End of Round 2

I must apologize for missing it, but the touch of Shadowlina on Lamatar had no effect on the foe, but still did cause her frost damage.

Abandoned Shrine - Round 3

27 Lamatar
23 Adolina (charge AC penalty; challenge)
23 Shadowlina (14hp dmg)
20 Robin
10 Marcellano
6 Cadas

As Adolina and her shadow close on Lamatar, he strikes out at the flesh and blood foe with his icy claw, but the blow misses somehow, swishing nothin but air.

Ah, natural 1. Why? Combat map is updated with everyone's position. Good guys are up.

Figuring they need a boost, Robin breaks into cheers, inspiring his allies to greater feats of arms than usual.

Adolina and Cadas are still on the clock.

Cadas is forced to double move again to see what is going on. Seeing the undead she tries to recall details of what it might be.

Knowledge Religion: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

Cadas:
The creature engaged with Adolina is, or at least was, Lamatar Bayden, former captain of the guardians of Fort Rannick, now a vile undead apparition. Cadas can identify the foe as a wight, in fact a frost wight. It has all the traits of a typical undead creature. The undead form also retains the skills, abilities, and techniques that Lamatar had while in the flesh. A frost wight is immune to cold and deals cold damage whenever touched or making a touch. Additionally, like all wights, Lamatar drains life energy with a successful touch, pulling one temproary negative level with each touch.

Abandoned Shrine - Round 3 - concluded

As Shadowlina withdraws, Adolina launches an attack with her glaive, which scores a powerful, but not overwhelming, hit on Lamatar's wight. The damage is significant, but not enough to be lethal.

Cadas spends some time studying the undead foe, hoping to discern its abilities and dangers before experiencing them first-hand.

After arriving on the scene, Marcellano rummages in his pile of scrolls, looking for just the right one for this situation.

End of Round 3

After 4 rounds of double moving I am still not close enough to do much! This is what I can do.

Cadas moves again, but only 20'. When she stops moving she calls upon the energy of Gozreh to smite the undead. Captain Bayden, we came to rescue you at the request of your lover. Does that still mean anything to you? If so, stand down.

Robin hurries forward into the action, then gets ready to conjure some grease if Lamatar approaches!

Move, ready action Grease spell to trip him if he moves adjacent to Adolina.

Abandoned Shrine - Round 4 - concluded

Adolina continues to battle with the ghastly form of Captain Bayden, striking it once and then springing away to avoid any easy reprisals.

Robin readies a simple, but effective, spell if the wight pursues Adolina.

Marcellano has the scroll he wants in hand, and begins reading from it. The spell attempts to give the wizard mastery over the undead. As soon as the words are finished and magic fires, Lamatar's ruined head turns toward Marcellano, as if waiting for a command.

He does not flinch or respond in anyway to the words called by the Shoanti priestess, as if he doesn't even hear them.

Cadas, I will hold off on your action for Burst of Radiance for now since Marcy has control of the wight. What shall he ask it to do? We may be out of rounds depending on how this goes...

Lamatar DC 16 Will: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

The halfling is surprised when the captain doesn't charge Adolina, but instead just stands there. He looks to Marcellano and sees that there's magic at work.

"Woah, what did you do, Marcy?" says Robin in surprise. "If he's under your control now, maybe we should ask him how he became like this, and if there's any way to change him back."

F Human Shoanti [AC: 23/12 tch/21 ff; HP 83/95; Frt +9, Ref +5, Will +13; Perc +19/21 vs creatures] Cleric 10, Init:+1, Diplo +8, Heal +15, Sense Motive +15

Cadas her magic but continues to close. If you truly control this creature perpahs we can use it against the giants. How strong is your control?

Marcellano answers in his best 'I am the master of all things magical' voice. "Well, control is a pretty strong word. If this were a zombie or a skeleton, I'd say I have them locked down pretty good. But there is an evil intelligence at work in this one, however limited, and it can shrug off my commands, and possibly break the spell completely, if I give it orders that are contrary to its nature or best interest. I don't see it fighting for us, but I can make it go away or lie down or something similar."

When Robin suggests questioning the frost wight that used to be Lamatar, it is clear that language is a challenge and whatever memories might remain in the husk of the former captain, they are locked way, way down deep and will not come to the surface.

It may be useful to recall the request of Myriana the nymph ghost. It was only to bring back some part of Lamatar, not him completely or restored. Just a reminder...

Adolina steals herself for the cold and steps up to swiftly cut away a chunk of the remaining hair from the figure. That done she moves behind it and prepares her glaive before shooting a questioning look at Marcellano.

I can't CdG this thing can I? Irritating! Even just a standard crit would deal a lot of damage if I get the time to line up a strike.

Inactive

"Good thinking Adolina," agrees Robin as they collect some hair. "Maybe we have Lamatar watch our back as we continue on in this place?"

"I don't tjink you can attack him, as he will defend himself and break my control," says Marcellano to the war-like half-elf. "But we could ask him to be a rear-guard and alert us if some giant was sneaking up. Want me to make that command, and we can just leave him here?"

Inactive

"Sounds like a plan to me!" says the halfling in approval. "Okay, no more sneaking around so far ahead, Adolina! Better to stick together so we can fight these things together!"

Is it correct that Adolina is at full HP, while Shadowlina has 14 damage? Not sure if I can help with Shadowlina.

As Adolina moves slightly ahead, the team moves with her, bending slightly to the east and north. There a gigantic chamber extends into darkness to the east, sloping upward between two wide ledges on which loom statues with angular faces, stern brows, and strong jawlines. Above, the ceiling opens to the slate gray sky above. The ramp leads up in tiers, finally coming to an end before an immense stone throne.

A towering stone giant, standing almost 12' tall, stands next to the throne, holding a massive stone club in its tremendous hands. Seated n the throne is another stone giant, dressed in long luxurious robes, its massive head in one hand, leaning on an arm of the throne. A lovely red-haired human woman sits on the steps of the throne, staring at you with the most intense hatred you've ever witnessed.

With an almost bored expression the seated giant says, in a big rumbling voice, "Finally, they have arrived. I've grown weary with the waiting. Deal with these mites. They've caused enough problems for me."

With that, both the woman and the giant bodyguard ready to fight.

Robin breaks out one of his tried and true magical spells, casting an aura of confusion around both the casters. Barl's mind is strong enough to resist, and Robin thinks he may have affected Lucrecia, only to find that the mind-affecting spell has no impact on her.

The great stone bodyguard advances with long strides, closing the distance and interposing himself between the newcomers and his master. He bends for a huge boulder, bigger than a man's head, and prepares to throw it at teh party.
