I've been short of time to post the last few days because my wife is out of town, leaving me to take care of our geriatric cat (plus our slightly less-geriatric cat and the two younger ones). Since I'm not working from home any more, I haven't had much time in the evenings. Things should be closer to normal by the weekend, though.
DM Carbide |
Cool. In theory I'm going to Pennsic in a couple of weeks, but we shall see.
DM Carbide |
I'll be away on vacation for the first two weeks in August, and won't be able to put up any game posts--we're camping, so I'm leaving my laptop home.
Seamus, I'll be in E10, up on the hill (wouldn't camp in the Serengeti for anything). Where will you be?
DM Carbide |
If any of you (besides Jarrek!) are interested, there's a Dragon's Demand game still in its early stages that's lost half the party to RL. HERE'S a link; currently, we have a barbarian (me), a cleric, and a druid. So we're not hurting for combat power or healing, but we could use a skill monkey and an arcane caster. Drop the GM a message if you're interested.
Trianne Ashton |
As an aside, my rough math puts Svarog being able to Craft 20 arrows in half a day with the use of my magic tool, a roll of 9+, and 4SP of materials.
Unlikely to matter with his departure after we finish the vault, but heaven only knows how long we'll be in here!
DM Carbide |
Work has been hectic, and the upcoming fight is going to have a lot of moving parts, so I haven't been able to set aside the time--I'll get a post up moving things along tomorrow, I hope.
DM Carbide |
Has anyone heard from Jarrek's player in the last few days? He's in three of my games, and hasn't posted anything since last Friday.

Happy to play Inspire Courage however you like, DM. The text from https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/bard/ made me think the damage didn’t include magic: “…and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls.” The use of ‘weapon’ in there seemed a pretty distinct inclusion, but then I went down the FAQ rabbit hole of what constitutes a weapon in magic and lordy loo…
So for future reference to speed things along, are you in the ‘if the spell requires an attack roll it benefits from the Inspire Courage damage bonus’ camp? Or something else? Thanks!
DM Carbide |
The former. Basically, in my non-PFS games, inspire courage will always give bonuses to attack rolls (including for combat maneuvers) and HP damage rolls. So it'd give you a bonus on your attack roll with an enervation spell, but wouldn't add anything to the levels suppressed.

Disclaimer: I’m fully aware of the brambleblight’s sensory package in having Trianne make this choice and willing to suffer whatever consequences are determined. My gamble was based on the actual location of the BB and whether her chosen path of movement had the opportunity to slip past the sensory package.
That being said, welcome to the Windy Escape rabbit hole! :D There are a couple of issues that crop up when looking at this spell’s wording:
1. Flat-footed vs. Immediate Action
Immediate actions cannot be taken when flat-footed, but the text of flat-footed is pretty clear, the condition existing only before a character first acts in a combat. The bonuses for attacking while undetected are the same as when a target is flat-footed, but this does not convey the flat-footed condition. The Rogue’s sneak attack text appears to spell out the difference by omitting the use of ‘flat-footed’. “The rogue’s attack deals extra damage anytime her target would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC…”
2. Awareness vs. Stealth
Do you need to be aware of the attack to use Windy Escape? There are no indications within the spell description that awareness is required for activation. Unlike the Deflect Arrows feat for example which states, “You must be aware of the attack and not flat-footed.”
Add in the text from the In Harm’s Way feat, “…you can intercept a successful attack against that ally as an immediate action…” which implies that you can activate this ability after the attack die is rolled.
Within the text of Stealth you get, “Your Stealth immediately ends after you make an attack roll…” which would make it seem like there’s the potential for an instant of awareness to react with an immediate action after the attack roll.
So it seems to come down to the timing mostly, but it’s murky as many things are in PF. This info was cobbled together from various forum posts and rule references, but a lot of DMs ruled a lot of different ways based on their playstyle. As I said, I’m good either way. Characters live, characters die. Making new characters is fun. And I don’t know if the 10 HP this spell would save her now will ultimately save her from her current situation…
So give it some thought, John, and let us know what’s what in your world, and we’ll go from there!
I imagine looking for Trianne's invisible, bleeding body for 4 more rounds will be entertaining at the very least. :)
DM Carbide |
I'm not surprised that this is a rabbit hole. With perfect timing, though, I'm about to leave on a business trip, and may not have much time for more than short posts until Thursday night or Friday morning.

So in looking at the dice rolls, I have another question. The 3 d20’s look like Attack, Attack/Crit, Confirm, followed by the 2d6+7 damage twice with one set doubled because of crit. That yields the 22 + 21 totaling 43.
3d20 ⇒ (14, 20, 11) = 45
6d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 3, 1, 6, 6) = 22
If the above is correct, I thought a single AoO instance could only generate a single melee attack in response, unless stated otherwise. Combat Reflexes would certainly allow it to hit Trianne twice if she did two actions to provoke, i.e. If she drank a potion and cast a spell, then yeah, BAM! BAM! But with only a move to provoke, shouldn’t she be attacked only once? Oh, wait, or was this its standard turn for Round 7 at the bottom of the initiative? If that’s the case, no one should really react to it until next round…? :/
Sorry for being a pest about it, but that’s some of the reason she’s willing to wander into dangerous situations like this, knowing Windy Escape has saved her bacon more than once in the past.
DM Carbide |
It wasn't an AoO. It was holding an attack and waiting for Trianne to come in range.
DM Carbide |
I'm not opposed, but will leave it up to the rest of you.
Jarrek Everstand |
Question about Jarrek's weapon focus. It looks like none of the monsters or NPCs are going to be carrying a falchion. Would it be possible to get the greatsword (or any other dropped weapon) "reforged" into a falchion to retain whatever magic or story reason the item is in the game? Or would it just be better to sell whatever we pick up and try to buy a magical falchion for Jarrek?
Trianne Ashton |
Happened to come across that very thing while refreshing on armor/weapon crafting today.
"The standard rules don’t allow item creation feats to alter the physical nature of an item, its default size, its shape, or its magical properties."
So no, according to RAW.
DM Carbide |
This particular case is even more fraught because of the connection to Gorum worship, unfortunately.
Trianne Ashton |
In rehashing crafting posts, I came across the one where Jarrek’s MW Falchion was sundered by a giant…. :/ So maybe use the GS for now?
With 1000GP, 8hrs and a heat source, I can make any weapon +1.
Also taking requests for Wondrous Items. Drop your top 3 in chat if you like (Jarrek I have your list), and I’ll see what’s what.
Jarrek Everstand |
I thought we had Trianne fix it? I remember talking about that at one point.
Ah ha! Looking through backposts I see that Skreed was carrying a MW Cold Iron Falchion that I think I missed. We can just say he's carrying that one instead of the one that got sundered! If we get access to a forge, though, it's probably cheaper and more meta-efficient to fix his broken MW falchion and then enchant it to +1 than to try to enchant a cold iron weapon. We're not fighting demons and fey here, we're fighting giants and orcs (this place notwithstanding).
DM, if that's alright with you I'll update Jarrek's sheet to say he has Skreed's MW Cold Iron Falchion instead of the plain old MW Falchion that got sundered way back when.

Non-magical repair isn’t happening (see below, italics mine). Buy a new falchion and I can turn it MW with Masterwork Transformation, and then craft it into a +1. (I can MW any weapon, armor, shield, tool, kit we have with the coin, an hour, and a spell slot.) Also, I'll be looking to pick up Make Whole asap.
Non-Magical Repair Process:
3750S = Find the item’s price in silver pieces.
15 = Find the item’s DC from Table: Craft Skills.
75G = The raw material cost of repairing an item is one-fifth of the item’s price.
20 avg = Make an appropriate Craft check representing one week’s worth of work.
300 = If the check succeeds, multiply your check result by the DC.
If the result × the DC equals the price of the item in sp, then you have completed the item. If the result × the DC doesn’t equal the price, then it represents the progress you’ve made this week. Record the result and make a new Craft check for the next week. Each week, you make more progress until your total reaches the price of the item in silver pieces.
Result: greater than 12 weeks to repair the sundered MW Falchion through non-magical means
Trianne Ashton |
Two other things:
1. I misspoke. Time to craft is based on Base Price cost, so 2 days for a +1 enhancement.
2. Adding magical enhancement to a Cold Iron weapon raises its price 2000GP (adding 2 more days to the process). So another 1000GP onto the 1000GP crafting cost for the +1.
DM Carbide |
I'm thinking a replacement for Svarog would be good. Getting decent ranged support will help.
Trianne Ashton |
I'm in favor of a fifth. I believe it adds resiliency to the game when a player needs to fade for a bit or must drop altogether. What that 5th is doesn't matter to me, as I enjoy the tactical puzzle of using whatever we have to overcome the obstacles.
DM Carbide |
We're coming to a good point to bring in a new player; do any of you know someone who might be interested?
DM Carbide |
The blindness is a permanent effect? Remove Blindness is a 3rd level spell, and Haftor won't get those until he's 7th level. I think we might actually need to find a cleric somewhere.
You're right--for some reason I thought Haftor could cast it, which was why (stepping into metagaming for a moment) I didn't hold back on using the spell. This is a problem, as no one in the APAW has the spell. (If I had to guess, I'd say that the author assumed that the party would have a full-spell progression divine caster; if I'd gotten the spell level right, I would have done something else with the lurkers.
Seamus MacWirst |
Looks like both Seamus and Haftor can get the spell at level 7, so eventually. I missed if we’re all blinded or if someone can see, so as long as one of us can guide to someplace with a full divine caster we should be okay
Trianne Ashton |
From what I've seen, Dispel Magic can counter this magical blindness too, which Trianne can get access to but doesn't currently possess. Plus, scribing scrolls might be a little challenging without her eyesight... >.>
Still, an arcane caster with DM in the repertoire is an option too, having a chance to dispel the effect. (And I can assure you what one of her spell choices will be next level...)

The closest city of any size is Vigil, about seventy miles away via river. It's in hilly country, though, so navigation is going to be tricky. You could go back to the border station you rescued in the fast-forward, though, and they'd be willing to send a message and money with the normal supply run. To give you some sense of scale, there's a route map in the header.
