If I can avoid the Amulet of Natural Armor in any way, I will; there are so many cool neck items that it blocks (and similarly shoulder slot items and Cloaks of Resistance). Automatic Bonus Progression is one of my favorite options to avoid those two items; Defense subdomain clerics are another.
But the Amulet will probably be a necessity eventually if I want to fight giants head-on (which I do).
Jarrek Everstand |
Boat ride then infiltrating or invading an enemy fort, I believe. Looking at the map, it's just as far from here to Redlake Fort as it was from Trunau to here so that's a few days on the boat.
Jarrek Everstand |
Yeah, and Ghostlight Marsh is only what, 1/3 of the way to Redlake Fort? In an earlier post DM said we were heading with the current on the Kestrel River from Trunau to here then would be heading upriver once we got on the Esk River and started toward Redlake Fort.
DM Carbide |
One of you can do crafting-type activities on the boat; the rest of you will have to work.
Jarrek Everstand |
I just want to check since I didn't see a response- could the scimitar be a falchion instead, DM?
If not, the only thing off that list Jarrek could use is the breastplate.
Trianne Ashton |
Okay, I'd defer then since I think Trianne can actually make more useful things, at this level most alchemical weapons are more of a nuisance than truly effective.
Thanks, Seamus, but I was just planning on using the half-time adventuring crafter rules anyway, and if there's no consensus on an overarching item to craft, she'll just take her share and see what's what.
Feel free to take dedicated crafting time if you like, though if you do, making something for the captain as well might be to our benefit. ;)
DM Carbide |
You can sell the chain shirt for half price.
Jarrek, given that these are mostly weapons made for druids and their allies to use (Gorum's Thorn is there because they were going to try to reverse-engineer it, but they never had the time), I can't see making the scimitar a falchion instead. There should be something coming along soon, though.
Kronug, since you're coming in at the beginning of the sanctioned section of Part 2, once we're done you can get a chronicle sheet if you want.
Trianne Ashton |
So as it stands from preferences mentioned, looks like we're trying to offload the following gear:
250 125 MW Chain
810 405 wand flaming sphere, 9 charges
2700 1350 wand greater magic fang 12 charges
250 250 ironwood crown with a stylized thorn motif worth 250 gp
150 150 a ceremonial gem-encrusted cudgel worth 150 gp
2280 subtotal
30 3 pp
178 178 gp
60.5 605 sp
21.25 2125 cp
2569.75 total
642.43 split 4 ways (unless Svarog wants his cut...?)
So items we'll be keeping on hand include:
1300 650 +1 ironwood breastplate (Jarrek)
4000 2000 +1 flaming scimitar (Haftor)
800 400 10 +1 orc bane arrows (Kronug)
2282 1141 arrow of orc slaying (Kronug)
150 75 scroll barkskin (Haftor)
375 187.5 scroll call lightning (Haftor)
700 350 scroll summon nature's ally IV (Haftor)

Heh. By RAW, the scouting party has a small problem in that the giant only speaks Giant, and the others only speak Common and Orc. That's getting changed.
Trianne Ashton |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
I do love the notion of them having to communicate with body language only, and the giant smashing the occasional orc out of frustration :) , but I get the need for plot development communication too.
DM Carbide |
That's what created the tracks Kronug found, but I slipped up; you don't know what they are, and I didn't describe them as accurately as I might have.
DM Carbide |
I was out of town for part of the weekend; also wasn't sure if anyone else was going to comment on the translation.
Jarrek Everstand |
Do the front-liners focus on the giant to try to drop the big gun as fast as possible or do we want to try to drop the orcs first so they don't swarm around and eat Seamus?
DM Carbide |
Although they're equipped the same, these orcs look a little more experienced than most of the ones the party has faced before.
DM Carbide |
I have a project review over the next few days, and will be slow to post.
PbemDM |
I'm good with Haftor taking on the orcs while Jarrek and Kronug keep the giant busy. J's gonna get in range and try to Demoralize everybody with his first round, should give the bad guys a debuff for a couple rounds.
I'm going to cut east and hit the orcs on that side.
Also, I love your avatar.
DM Carbide |
RL is a bummer.
At least they fed us pretty well. That, and it was only 45 minutes away from home, so I didn't have to fly anywhere (unlike the team lead, who came in from the East Coast).
DM Carbide |
I'm a reviewer, not a reviewee. They're going to be assessed by the folks with the money sometime in May, and the Lab Director brought in an independent team to find issues before the real thing. It's quite the project.

I used to be a chemist; my bachelor's is in chemistry, and I did blood & urine drug and alcohol testing for the State of Wisconsin before I went to grad school and got a doctorate in metallurgy (hence my 'nym). After my research job went away, I moved to operational support--first regulatory compliance for nuclear facilities, then safety/environmental/quality support for what's now the Nuclear Science & Engineering Division at Argonne. Most of the division just does modeling, but the exceptions are...well, we've got about 800 gallons of molten sodium in a test loop, and one of the research teams simulates reactor meltdowns at the 50-400 kg scale (it's only depleted uranium and no fission products, but the melt simulant starts out as chromium (VI) oxide, zirconium metal, DU oxide, and some other stuff to get the chemistry right). It's a fun job.
PbemDM |
That is all very cool. I didn't realize anyone was simulating meltdowns - vey interesting.
I do research in identification and characterization of pathogens that are considered to be bio-warfare threats, though we've gotten into naturally occurring pandemic diseases for obvious reasons.
No molten sodium, just lots of bio-safety labs.
DM Carbide |
That's also pretty cool. We've got one BSL3 lab on site, but it's operated by the University of Chicago.

So, I know I am new here and I don't want to rock the boat if you all are happy with the way you are doing things. But there are a few things I see here that might change the way this battle (and future ones) could go.
Jarrek said he was casting Mirror Image, but he didn't roll for how many images he got (1d4+1 at his level).
Then the GM didn't factor the Mirror Images into the orc attacks (how could he, if he didn't know how many). That might have saved Jarrek a lot of damage depending on how many images he got and how many the near misses popped.
On the downside for Jarrek, I did see that his damage is too high (Heroism doesn't add to damage) and his AC is sort of too high (technically, he can wear a breastplate, but then he would have Arcane Spell Failure; Ironwood doesn't change the armor category). Arcane Duelists get Medium Armor at level 10.
Again, if you are more rules-light and "play it by ear" then I am happy to do that. Just want to know what to expect.
DM Carbide |
Good catches, Kronug, and I should have remembered the mirror images. (I'll plead distraction, as I'm a little overextended atm and last week was pretty busy.) I prefer to stick to RAW when possible, and when I don't I try to give some indications in advance.[1] I know when I do attack and damage rolls for my PCs I try to do something like
Light crossbow to blue, including inspire courage and PBS: 1d20 + 7 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 7 + 1 + 1 = 21
because that way--especially when the PC has multiple buffs--it's easy for me to check my work, and easy for others to do likewise if they have questions.
[1]Just in case someone wants to use either of these, I treat 1) starknives as slashing melee weapons and piercing thrown weapons, and 2) scythes as simple weapons with x2 crit (though I'd accept a historical use reference as a counterargument).
Trianne Ashton |
Thank you, Kronug, for bringing up your concerns in rational discourse. I certainly appreciate it! DMC is always very good about keeping us honest, though ultimately, I believe we all just suffer from a little bit of too much going on in our aging brains in this slow paced environment. As soon as you mentioned Mirror Image, I was like, "Wow, how did I overlook that?!" Because I try to keep a pretty solid handle on the active tactical flow. Less so on each player's nuanced build, as I'm more of a casual Pathfinder player, learning as I go.
Never hesitate to ask clarification or to drop a reminder for folks. I have/do. :)
One additional element I'll add, is that we are sometimes unable/slow to adjust the map tactically with our character movements due to when/where we're posting. I just mention it because I know your build is affected by adjacency, so again, just ask where PCs actually are if you need to when making your tactical choices.
The Stone Fist |
DM C - I'm going on leave and won't be posting (probably) for a week or so. On my turn, I'd like to take a 5' step S so I can use my Orc Hewer feat to attack red and Cleave blue. If I manage the Cleave, I get a +2 on the attack against blue.
warhammer att w/ Hatred and Haste is +9
damage w/acid is 1d10 + 4 + 1d4
Haste, rd 2/5 (+1 attack, +1 attack bonus, +1 AC, +1 Ref, +30 ft),
Acid Strike: 4 of 10 rounds
Shield of Faith: 3 of 50 rounds
- AC 24, 28 against the giant

I'll be out of town this weekend, and may or may not have a chance to post.
