DM Carbide |

I knew you guys would save my bacon! Limited posting still for several days. I'll level up and catch up on gameplay ASAP.
I infer from your phrasing that you're also interested in continuing. Sounds good, and I'll get some further wrapup and segue into Part 2: The Hill Giant's Pledge!

Svarog Sky-Tamer |

I also think a 5th player could be good to have.
Ranger lvl.4:
+1 Dex
+1 BAB, CMD, CMB
+1 to 11 skills: Acrobatics, Handle animal, Intimidate, K:history (+2), K:nature, Linguistics (Giant), Perception, Ride, Stealth, Survival
increased hps: 1d5 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 5 + 1 = 7 Of course.
Saves: +1 Fort/Ref
Hunter's bond - deferred to lvl.5 Monstrous Mount ac
Spells/day: lvl.1 - 1 (gravity bow)
sells his non-MW longsword and chain shirt for 57.5 gps
I'd like to get him a MW +2 Str composite bow, can he just buy that, DM? Or does he need to be in a city?

DM Carbide |

Anyone else have OP numbers?

DM Carbide |

Jarrek, what character number do you want the chronicle applied to?

Jarrek Everstand |

I'm gonna reach out for advice here. I've been looking at keeping him an Arcane Duelist Bard, making him a Magus, possibly trying Bloodrager, or going crazy and doing Sorcadin or Battle Oracle or Blade Adept Arcanist into Eldritch Knight and I've just got too many options. The question really boils down to what role do we need Jarrek to fill?
I've been using him as a front line combatant but his build is really more of a party buffer/enemy debuffer. Should I focus on individual combat effectiveness (which leans toward magus or bloodrager) or stick with party buffing (which would probably have him stay bard or go more cast-y)?
His Intimidate schtick doesn't really come online until 5th level, and I'd like to see him go around mass Intimidating, but I have the opportunity to rebuild him now so I'd like to make him useful to the group.
I would love some advice here from anybody. I'm grateful for the opportunity to rebuild, so let's Session Zero this thing. :)

Trianne Ashton |

Ugh, I am woefully undereducated when it comes to current build opportunities. I've only skimmed the surface of the rich depths Pathfinder has to offer, and my old school brain seems content enough there for now. So don't expect any suggestions from me, but I'm happy to offer feedback when I can.
That being said, my first suggestion would be to not iron anything out seriously until you see what the fifth player is looking to bring in?

DM Carbide |

The major gap you have right now, IMO, is the lack of someone to deal with traps. I can change up the opposition to work around some of that if you don't want to get anyone new, though, so don't let that sway your thinking too much. You're also lacking a dedicated healer, though again judicious choice of items will make up for a lot (esp. considering the current party has three people who can use CLW wands without having to make UMD checks, and the fourth has a decent UMD check). Jarrek could definitely use a better AC, though.

PbemDM |

My plan was to be more of a secondary melee guy in support of a dedicated tank, which would allow me to heal folks as required. We find ourselves without a melee fighter, though, so I've stepped into the gap. It's been working out better than I expected it would, and I'm happy to continue to stand up front.
Bottom line, Jarrek can play whatever role you want him to play, though I think it would be helpful if you were mobile and could hop into the front line on occasion either when I'm knocked out or needed for healing .
As for our 5th player, a rogue, dedicated healer, or tank would all work well, though they would each shift the current dynamic in different ways.

Jarrek Everstand |

Still working on how to rebuild Jarrek, FYI. Getting a 5th to be a trap-breaker would be great. Just wanted to hop on to talk about loot- I updated the loot list to reflect what we just got.
I figure Haftor should get Uskroth's armor as well as his hammer.
The human-bane arrows should probably go to Svarog.
I wouldn't mind the Heavyload Belt but it might be better to sell it and get a real Str belt?
Scrolls can go to Trianne.
I'd say sell the rest, unless somebody wants a MW shield or MW breastplate- Svarog?
If we sell everything on the loot list that isn't claimed and isn't a potion or something else immediately useful we could have 13108gp (including the value of coins we found). The question then would be whether Trunau is in any condition to sell us adventuring-type gear or magical weapons and items.

Svarog Sky-Tamer |

The MW breastplate instead of chainmail is a good deal for Svarog, if no one else wants it. I'll add the arrows to his sheet, too, and update soonish.
I think Jarrek should just use the Heavyload Belt until we're around nicer things, haha. Unless Trunau has a thriving magic item market.
I originally envisioned Svarog as more of a switch hitter/sword from the skies, but drew away from the idea as PF doesn't make it easy... but he can help out on the melee front if that's needed. Once he gets his AC, it turns out he can't ride around firing arrows from the sky anyway for several more levels, so... yeah.
But on the subject of ranged assault - GM, did you see my question about the bow?

Jarrek Everstand |

I think what I might do is just take a level of Lore Oracle and get Sidestep Secret to add Cha to AC. That would also give him a couple new divine spells to add to his buffing repertoire and allow him to use Medium armor, though ACF would be a problem if he started wearing it now. It pushes his Arcane Bond back til 6th and I was excited about getting Mirror Image this level, but he seriously needs the AC bump.

Jarrek Everstand |

OK, that made it easier. Jarrek's leveled up and has a base 18 AC. Not stellar, but he has Protection from Evil now from Oracle, so he can pump it to 20 for most of a combat with one spell.
With the Heavyload Belt he's at light encumbrance up to 300 pounds, which is pretty nice. :) That takes our possible sale income down to 12108.
DM, are the shops here open to sell our unwanted loot? And the flip side of that- is anybody open to sell us more CLW wands or other stuff?
Sorry, one other thing while I'm looking at Jarrek's sheet- he has Brinya's Dagger, can we assume we got it Identified, too?

Trianne Ashton |

With several days until the funereal day. Tri’s rough plan looks like:
Day 1: Pretty much set, but she’s got 45 min she could fiddle around with something as needed.
Identify Plague House wand: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
Identify Gelatinous Cube scroll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
Identify Drummer vial of liquid: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23
Identify Brinya’s dagger: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23
~15 min
Transcribe Enlarge Person from scroll to spellbook vs. DC 16: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20
Transcribe Detect Secret Doors from scroll to spellbook vs. DC 16: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22
Transcribe Charm Person from scroll to spellbook vs. DC 16: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
Transcribe Phantasmal Killer from scroll to spellbook vs. DC 19: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28
Transcribe Tongues from scroll to spellbook vs. DC 18: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
~5 hours
Scribe scroll of Vanish vs. DC 6: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29 25 GP
~2 hours
Day 2: Flexible
Plan is to create a Wondrous Item for herself that takes a day, 1000GP or less.
Day 3: Flexible
Willing to create a Wondrous Item for someone else, 1000GP or less.
Happy to discuss options!

Jarrek Everstand |

Everybody could benefit from the basics, like Amulet of Natural Armor and Cloak of Resistance. 1000gp isn't enough for Belts and Circlets, unfortunately.

Svarog Sky-Tamer |

Jarrek might get a ring of protection though, unless I'm misunderstanding the crafting rules and misremembering the price of the ring. That would still be useful, right?

Trianne Ashton |

Oh she can build some of the bigger items. (Rings are a whole different feat, CL7 earliest.) I just didn’t want to bite into resources too greatly without discussion first. Plus, time becomes a factor. The below belt takes 2 days to create, or she can do 2 1000GP items in that time.
Belt of Giant Strength +2 at DC 13 for 2000 GP.
My hotlist of potentially useful Wondrous items when I did a quick pass looks like:
Bracers of Armor +2 2000 at DC 12
All Tools Vest 900 at DC 6
Spectacles of Understanding 1500 at DC 2
Boots of the Cat 500 at DC 1
Hat of Disguise 900 at DC 6
Headband of Vast Intelligence +2 2000 at DC 13
Brooch of Shielding 750 at DC 1
Swarmbane Clasp 1500 at DC 13
Cloak of Fiery Vanishing 1300 at DC 15
Stonemist Cloak 1750 at DC 13
Pearl of Power 2 2000 at DC 17
Rope of Climbing 1500 at DC 8
Chime of Opening 1500 at DC 16
Minor Bag of Holding 500 at DC 14
Handy Haversack 1000 at DC 14
Scabbard of Vigor 900 at DC 10
Efficient Quiver 900 at DC 14
CL5 I intend to take Craft Magic Arms & Armor just for future planning.

Jarrek Everstand |

I play a crafter in a different game, too. :)
Efficient Quiver would be great for our archer.
There's also the very cheap Sleeves of Many Garments which is fun but got nerfed a while back, works well with the Hat of Disguise.
Personally, for this first round of crafting I'd focus on a Headband for Trianne because that will ultimately benefit us all in the long run, especially if you give it Spellcraft as its bonus skill. Then I'd go for low hanging fruit like the aforementioned Cloaks of Resistance and Amulets of Natural Armor.
A fun back-line combo I like is using the Goz Mask (I guess it's the Ghost Mask on the d20PFSRD?) with a Saltspray Ring- you get a permanent at will 10' Obscuring Mist that follows you around and the ability to see through it. The ring is above your feat level, though, and the Goz Mask is expensive for what it does.
I was going to say Effortless Lace would be really nice if we're going to be fighting giants and picking up Large weapons like we found in Uskroth's Tomb, but I just looked at it and it requires Craft Magic Arms and Armor, not Wondrous Item, so that's a level away.
Jarrek's personal Wondrous Item wish list would look something like this:
Belt of Giant Strength
Headband of Alluring Charisma or Circlet of Persuasion
Holy Mask of the Living God (eventually replaced by Maiden's Helm)

Svarog Sky-Tamer |

An efficient quiver would actually be very nice for Svarog, if we do go the double-1000s route. :) Knowing Paizo, I have suspicious feelings about the value of the swarmbane clasp for someone in the party, too.

Trianne Ashton |

While I am all for meta discussion of loot and planning for a solid tactical approach to an adventure path, I am also required by my conscience to justify all character actions in a roleplaying environment. What she chooses to build and when will be tempered by character background and the current state of affairs.
She's known you folks for a couple of days, and while she expects her share of the loot, she would only invest that amount in item creation for herself right now. She would be willing to convert coin from someone else's share into an item if they asked, but that's something that would need to happen in character. i.e. Jarrek asking for a Maiden's Helm...that's a chat I'd HAVE to have in character. "You want me to make you a what?" XD
But that also does not preclude her from making something that she might think someone would like or could really use. i.e. Efficient Quiver/Scabbard of Honing. For me, it's about what achieves the best balance between story and mechanics. So until we hear from John on how well Trunau can absorb our financial/item needs, final decisions are on hold.
Couple of closing points:
1. Any of these scrolls available for purchase in Trunau?
[Crafter’s Fortune]
[Expeditious Retreat]
[Steal Size]
[Make Whole]
2. Jarrek, the Headband of Vast Intelligence skill ranks do not stack with natural skill ranks, so Spellcraft wouldn’t work for her in that regard.
3. And I'm right there with you, Svarog, on the swarmbane clasp. This is a player who hates the swarm mechanic. 8D

PbemDM |

Haftor is good on magic items. He scored big on loot, so if Trianne is going to craft anything, it makes the most sense to do it for someone who didn't just get a boost in AC and comba power as Haftor did.
For my level up:
Updated Stats:
+3 BAB
Fort +4, Ref +1, Will +4
Special: Channel Energy and Sacred Weapon +1
Add 2 2nd lvl spells per day
Ability Score Boost: WIS +1 to 17
HP: 4+3(+1 Favored class)=+8 for 38 total
Skills: (3) 1 rank in Heal, Knowledge (engineering), and Profession (stonemason)
Also updating my profile.

DM Carbide |

Haftor, for your reference you have a +2 impact warhammer. It has some other benefits, but you either don't know how to activate them or they haven't been turned back on.

Jarrek Everstand |

On that note, DM, Jarrek has Brinya's Dagger but we haven't gotten an official confirmation on what it is. Is it just a +1 dagger?

DM Carbide |

Once per day on command, the wielder can grant the weapon the ghost touch ability for 1 minute. During that time, it sheds light equivalent to a daylight spell, and the wielder gains a ÷3 sacred bonus to CMD against attempts to disarm or sunder the hopeknife.

DM Carbide |

I haven't tried to recruit a fifth player yet, and we're getting close to starting. Do any of you know someone who might be interested in playing a skill monkey before I open it up?

Jarrek Everstand |

Hi, all. One of the players from a game I DM and Svarog plays in said they'd be interested in running a replacement skillmonkey PC for us. He should be posting here shortly, I think.

Svarog Sky-Tamer |

Welcome, Seamus!

DM Carbide |

Sounds good, and your profile looks good on a quick readthrough (though I may end up asking questions later). I'll warn you that the first part took a while--we're slow, but we're steady. I hope to pick up the pace a little, but we'll see. Go ahead and dot into the gameplay thread--I'll get you in with the party as soon as I can.

DM Carbide |

Precise Bombs is your friend.

DM Carbide |

Work and other RL things have been pretty grim the past few days--apologies for the delay, and I'll try to get something up in the next day or two.

Trianne Ashton |

I haven’t heard to the contrary yet, so if the party’s okay with the expenditure, i.e. Svarog coughing up some of his share for a quiver attempt, Trianne’s going to cobble together what magical supplies she can muster to go ahead and make crafting rolls for the two items she has lined up. If there’s issue with availability of materials or expenditure, please just chime in!
