Damn! They're waiting for us. Our first priority must be to protect the librarians! Anarya thought. Seeing that they had been spotted, she raised her voice, praying silently that her divine command would be obeyed. "Leave the innocent and come face the Inheritor's justice with honor, coward!" She raised her morningstar in a challenge.

Casting command [approach] on the man with the flaming longsword (DC 16 will save, or DC 17 for humans or native outsiders).

(Obligatory "Why don't you pick on someone your own size?")

Tauni grimaced at the report of what waits inside. Hoping to help make the conflict end as quickly as possible, she lead with one of her most powerful spells. A finger dipped into her pouch came back out with specks of granite coating the tip. With a gesture and an arcane syllable, the specks raced from her finger, expanded in number and brightness impossibly quickly and exploded in the air where the little daemon hovers. "Look out for that thing; its bite can make you sick!"

DC 16 Will save or blind, plus its all glittery now.

Anarya commanded the man at the back holding a hostage to approach, but he shrugged off the enchantment and still threatened the female librarian.

Avelina managed the first effective magical attack, stunning the tiny flying creature and injuring it with sudden sonic attack.

I misplaced Anevia in the order. She should have gone before Avelina, but I'll just assume she delayed to give the spellcasters a chance to soften up the opposition. Franti suggested he would want to act about here, so I'll wait for an indication of what he will do before posting Anevia and the other NPCs following.

Franti dashed through the doors, quickly following behind Avelina. As she came to a stop, the goblin kept going, grabbing his bow, aiming it skyward and letting loose a blunted arrow at the hovering, stunned demon.

Ranged Attack against FF Target: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18 for Damage: 1d4 + 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + (2, 4) + 2 = 10, nonlethal.

Move action to move and draw, standard to fire.

Franti moved rapdily into the room and around to where he could send a blunt-end arrow at the tiny flying creature, a task made slightly easier by the fact that it was glowing with glitterdust. The arrow sailed true, hitting the underbelly of the beast, such as it was. As it smacked into the little thing, however, it did not seem to affect it as much as it ought to have for such a direct hit. 5 points non-lethal damage.

Anevia hobbled into the room, sized up the situation and quickly decided she did not have a clear shot at the man holding the librarian as a human shield. She noticed that Franti's arrow did not have full effect on the creature and concluded she would fare no better, so she aimed at the man and called out with more boldness than she felt, "Harm her and this arrow goes through your black heart!" Successfully demoralizes Chaleb, who is now shaken.

The woman who was being held by the man was too frightened to do anything more than weep as the flaming sword drew closer to her throat.

The other librarians struggled helplessly against their bonds.

The flying creature drifted listlessly, moving a few inches away from the rope, stunned by Avelina's spell. Some of the visible wounds that the spell caused as well as some of the harm done by Franti's blunt arrow began to heal.

The man with the hostage called out an answer to Anevia, "You will find my black heart is not so easy to pierce little one. I shall dine on her soul. Do your worst." He then attempted to draw his sword across her unarmored chest. However, the woman wriggled just enough to prevent the sword from hurting her. Unable to maintain his grapple, the woman is no longer grappled by Chaleb.

Wenduag had been right behind the crusaders who had rushed into the room. She could not see into the room, but the shouting gave her enough clues about what was happening. She muttered to herself something in Hallit ("Izi ikutha tsopano!") and then dashed forward and into the room. Seeing the situation with the chandelier and the vulnerable hostages, she moved up to the nearest tied-up hostage and began to paw at the ropes, trying to untie them.

Horgus, seeing her move into the room, cursed and chased after her, thinking she was going to aid the enemy. When he saw her attempting to untie the ropes of the hostages, however, he tossed a dagger her way.Then he looked for an enemy to harm with his rapier.

Note, when moving around the books, treat the corners as soft corners, so you can cut across the diagonals.

DM, I'm not sure which one Chaleb is on the map. Is he the northernmost enemy? If so, Ellena will double move and lecture him.

Ellena cut through the crowd, directly for the imposter of Iomedae. "Fight someone your own size! Leave the girl be. The Inheritor wants me to cut her symbol off you and your armor. Get behind me, girl," she commanded the newly freed woman.

Karas continued his March into the room as his raging features formed and burst through the books next to Wendaug before slashing at the ropes binding the librarian.

Sorry, dropped the ball with my last post. Ellena double moves due north, a total of 40', trying to close with the man.

Ellena charged at the man posing as a paladin, Karas let rage transform him and began slashing at the ropes binding the librarians. He managed to free one librarian. Librarian 4 is no longer tied, although ropes still tie him to librarian #2 and #5. Anyone with a slashing weapon can cut the ropes by hitting AC 5 and doing at least 2 points of damage.

The librarian being attended to by Wenduag began to yell to the crusaders, "That flying thing is a cacodaemon. You need a blessed weapon or silver to be sure of hurting it. Don't bother hitting it with fire, lightning, or cold. It also knows spells!"

I moved Ellena around rather than through the obstacles in the middle, as that gets her about 10' closer to the enemy than moving at half speed through difficult terrain.

For an instant, Tauni considered her options and the best way to help everyone. Thinking she needed to be free to move about, she called on the blessing of Terendelev to ward her.

Activating Sanctuary from the scale.

Ellena can handle him, Anarya thought, confident in her friend's abilities. That daemon must be stopped. "Present yourself and be judged, abomination!" Anarya commanded the wretched fiend.

Avelina kept her focus on the vicious little creature hovering near the rope as she marched to her Champion's side. In that moment, nothing existed to her outside of that creature.

"Keep right on trembling before the Power of the Inheritor!"

Avelina followed Ellena like a faithful puppy, but instead of barking, she directed another holy sound burst at the warrior. The sound washed over him, but he did not even blink, only acquiring some color in his face from some internal bleeding from the blast. 2 points damage, not dazed. He got a nat 20 on his save.

He grinned the wider as he saw more people coming to the rescue of the librarians he seemed about the murder. Something very disconcerting about his grin indicated he was not normal and certainly not a follower of Iomedae as his shield might suggest. This impression was further bolstered by his next comment, audible mainly to Avelina and Ellena.

She was casting on the familiar again, not the human guy. Sorry if I was unclear

With a bow without sneak damage, I only do 1d4, I can't do much to the demon now.

Franti dropped his bow to the ground. He moved across the stacks, reaching into his bandolier and removing his two saps. The goblin hopped over a corpse as he passed by Ellena and Avelina.

Franti felt the air grow warm and dry by the flaming sword. The goblin briefly grinned at the woman, tilting his head to tell her to go. "H-hey! Hot-shot!" Franti barked as he circled Chaleb. His grin widened nervously. "Someone this small will be your undoing! Even, Even your gods'll think this funny."

Double move action. No tumbling, purposely provoking attack of opportunity during my movement as maybe she can leave and not provoke in hers. If he is evil, my AC is 20 due to Protection from Evil.

Ellena, we can get flanking if he stays still. Obligatory "pick on someone my size" quote.

Chaleb watched the goblin with the saps move around and arrive in reach of his sword before the others. He gleefully took a swing at Franti as he came close. He cut Franti with a nasty slash which also burned him a little. 11 sword damage + 1 fire damage

Anevia aimed at Chaleb but sensed that the librarian might try to get free as Chaleb had let go of her to try to hit her with his sword and Franti was distracting him. She waited to shoot her arrow when she had a clear shot, hoping the hostage would bolt.

Indeed the young woman began to run toward her colleages and began to try to untie them before the chandelier could be dropped on them by the daemon. She she stuggled with the knots however and was not making much headway.

With a clear shot, Anevia let fly her arrow and followed it with another. The first glanced off his shield, but the second managed to lodge in a gap in his armor of the shoulder of his shield arm. 1 point of damage. She stepped a little closer to the daemon.

The librarian whom Karas freed tried to untie himself from his fellow librarians, but could not get the knots to loosen, as he nervously glanced up at the chandelier and the daemon who was starting to revive. The other librarians struggled against their bonds, but were helpless to get free.

The cacodaemon shook free of the daze it had been in and immediately bit at the taut rope holding up the chandelier. The hemp rope was no match for the rows of sharp teeth and snapped with a disheartening twang. The chandelier fell on the helpless librarians with a horrific crash. The one whom Karas had freed was able to shift enough to take a glancing blow. The others fell silent as the heavy wooden object crushed them.

After biting the rope, the daemon flew surprisingly fast to flank Franti.

Chaleb, still grinning at the havoc he and his familiar were causing, stepped away from Franti and toward Ellena. He made eye contact with the paladin as she closed on him and said, Obey the will of Rovagug!. As he said this, he nodded his head and shifted his gaze toward Avelina and then winked at Ellena.

Wenduag tried to lift the chandelier off the bodies of the librarians, but couldn't quite manage it. Then Horgus sheathed his rapier and stepped up and with an impressive effort, the middle-aged merchant managed to lift the chandelier up on edge and pushed it so it toppled on the far side from him and off the mostly unconscious scholars.

The corpse on the floor in front of Ellena makes that square difficult terrain, but Chaleb cannot take advantage of that to make an AOO because of the hard corner.

DM, due to my Aura of Courage, I am immune to fear. All allies within 10' of me also gain a +4 to Fear saves.

Ellena moved over the body in front of her, as she swung her magical sword at the evil man. "Weak magic," she laughed. "The Lady and I am sent from the Inheritor. Your evil ends now!"

Power Attack damage 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Chaleb has an Aura of Cowardice which states that those with immunity to fear lose that immunity. I think the two auras essentially cancel out in this case.

Ellena's attack did not penetrate the anti-paladin's armor as the battle between good and evil truly joined. Ellena's sword glowing white contrasted with Chaleb's longsword which burned with a sickly green flame as both swords cast unearthly shadows across the ruined hall.

Ah, I did not know that! Well, that's a nifty ability right there...

Karas' lit eyes grew wide as the chandelier crashed down. As Wendaug and Horgus moved the decoration he turned to Anarya with a look of alarm and called for her, "Anarya!"

He then scrambled over the fallen and the books to try and get a claw on the bastard that set this up.

Assuming the squares with the unconscious do not count as rough terrain. Double Move toward Chaleb.

The books and any entangled, unconscious, or dead bodies are all difficult terrain, but a double move still gets Karas to where the figure was moved to.

Karas left a wake of torn book pages and dust as he drove forward across the debris and bodies in the middle of the librarium to get his claws in reach of Chaleb.

Aravashnial continued to creep along the wall and finally made it into the room, once inside the door, he began to call out, "Beltran! Torius! Eusebio!" With each name that went unanswered, his voice became more broken and desperate. He eventually reached a body on the floor and bent to touch the body, trying to find something that might identify it to the blind elf.

Tauni said she has a lot of things going on at the moment, so if she doesn't post by later this afternoon, I'll go ahead and 'bot something reasonable.

Having sensed that this foe was going to be unlike any other before, Tauni advanced amongst the librarians and books, getting a line of sight to their champion, Ellena. With a deep breath, she focused her will and arcane might on the paladin, starting a spell that would give her a giant edge in the melee.

Moving forward and starting to cast Enlarge Person on Ellena.

Anarya is next. On the assumption that she's likely going to channel energy to heal the librarians, Avelina can post when she's ready.

An FYI for Franti: the cacodaemon is tiny size, so it does not threaten the squares around it and will provoke an AOO if it moves in to attack, assuming it doesn't have any magical tricks up its non-existent sleeves.

Once the chandelier fell, Avelina clenched her fists, her jaw so tight that her teeth sounded about ready to crack. She rushed over towards Karas and Franti, drawing her crossbow and looking for a clear shot. She stopped, holding her crossbow in one hand, and glared at the man with the flaming sword, pointing towards him.

"You will pay for that, you...you...you...terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE person."

She side-eyed the cacodaemon.

"And you terrible whatever-the-hells you are."

Figuring it was her best chance to hit the warrior, and naturally trusting her own, um, "Inheritor-Granted" magic to do the job here, she fire a ray of frost at the man with the flaming sword.

"No! Why didn't I think of using the levitate scale to lift the chandelier! That would have been perfect!" thinks Anarya's player.

No! Why didn't I think of using Terendelev's scale to lift the chandelier! I could have saved them! thinks Anarya, realizing only too late what might have been done. A surge of guilt washed over her, tears coming to her eyes. She wrestled it down as her vision of the room blurred through the tears. Her halo flashed out in a wave of light even as she rushed to the fallen chandelier, hand touching the hard edge of the scale where it rested in the pocket of her robes.

Channel Energy: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 1) = 6 Selecting out all visible enemies.

Tauni moved across the book piles and began to cast a spell that would again enlarge Ellena. Anarya entered as well, sending healing energy that brought the librarians back from the brink of death. Franti's wound closed up some and left him in much less pain. Avelina sent a ray of frost at Chaleb that matched the cold disdain in which she held the evil man. The missile went wide, leaving a trail of frost particles drifting toward the floor.

Franti recoiled as the flaming sword was slashed across him. By the time he returned his attention to Chaleb, the man was already crossing blades with Ellena. Franti looked at the nearby demon, and dashed to flank the man.

Franti danced around the man and the demon, landing next to a fell librarian. "I warned you..." Franti reared his arm back, looked for an exposed spot at the man's neck or skull and swung his sap.

After the swing, Franti twirled around his sap triumphantly. He rattled his saps together rhythmically. "That hurt, didn't it?!" Filled with determination towards his dastardly foe, Franti cracked a wide grin. "It sounded like it hurt..." Franti shrugged, and swung a second time.

I started to do an update last night, but an unexpected computer problem set me back. I'll post the full details this afternoon.

Franti cartwheeled his way to a point where Chaleb could not adequately defend against the fool's fast flying saps, and took two nasty hits to his head. This should have been enough to knock him out or possibly kill him, but Chaleb absorbed the blows and kept on fighting, apparently drawing on an unseen reservoir of energy and health.

I don't have time to do the rest of the NPC actions, but I'll get something up in the early afternoon.

The cacodaemon hovered a moment after Franti moved and then rose to fly toward the main entrance, looking over the chaos below. It was 20 feet above the ground.

Chaleb tugged on a chain around his neck and pulled out a large cold iron medalian with the unholy symbol of Rovagug on it and said, Taste your own impending destruction for the glory of Rovagug! He stood defiantly and stuck out his chest slightly and then a wave of sickly green light shot from his dark heart and swept out at everyone within 30 feet. The light faded just before reaching Anarya and Wenduag.

The light caused everyone to feel sudden dread as the energy tried to penetrate his or her mental perimeter. None but Tauni and Fenna could keep the energy at bay and it disrupted their bodies as if a small swarm of ravenous spiders were flying about inside, causing blood to hemorrhage from nose, fingernails, and random cuts on the body. The wounds of the librarians, partly healed by Anarya, re-opened and the briefly revived victims of the falling chandelier again fell unconscious and began to die.

Negative energy does 9 points to Avelina, Ellena, Franti, Karas, Cobblepaw, Horgus, Anevia, and all librarians except Fenna. Tauni and Fenna take 4.

Ellena had never felt such a sensation. Her mind felt as if it were slipping away from her. Everyone seemed an enemy, even her Lady. She had to strike out at something, and picked the closest target....the demonblood.

"You betrayed us at last, demonblood," Elena calls out, using a slur that she had all but eliminated from her vocabulary after getting to know the tiefling. I should have known to not trust him! I have to protect my group!

She lashed out with Radience, trying to slice the bloodrager in two.

Sicne I Power Attack'd last round, I think I'd have done so again at the antipaladin, so I need to do it here. Sorry, Karas.

Note: on my previous post, I left off the damage caused by Chaleb's negative energy attack to Ellena and Karas. Both took 9.

It was a shock that the paladin would turn on him but his rage was focused on the man that caused harm to all of his friends. If he needed to put down the turncoat after that task was done, he would.

His wounds sealed a little in faint blue light as he reached out to year his for limb from limb.

2 attacks at Chaleb. Power attacking. If first hit drops Chaleb, second swing goes for Ellena (sorry!)

Anarya gasped at Ellena's attack on Karas, but realized that some dark magic must be affecting her. It was unthinkable that Ellena would strike Karas if her mind was clear. As the wave of sickly green light washed over the group, Anarya's eyes narrowed. Her halo fought back, outshining the feeble, evil light. She prayed that its magic would staunch the bleeding of the fallen librarians.

Channel Energy: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5 Once again, selecting out all visible enemies.

She looked around, trying to see if she could detect whatever had affected Ellena.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

Karas attacked Chaleb with his usual raging fury, attempting to inflict maximum harm with each swing of his clawed hands. This made it slightly easier for Chaleb to anticipate his attacks and each claw met with either a shield or a last second shift to keep the attacks from connecting In game turns, Chaleb has AC 15, so without the -1 for power attack, both attacks would have done damage.

As Aravashnial felt the cold body at the side of the librarium, he recognized a bit of jewelry and realized he knew the dead one, a fellow riftwarden. He began to cry, his face in his hands.

Not knowing (though suspecting) where the spell came from and not knowing how long it would last, Tauni instead channeled her arcane power to Karas in hope that it would help turn the tide of battle.

Karas, if you don't want the Enlarge Person because of the changes it would make to your stats, you can make a Fort save to resist it.

She then moves away from the melee, reading her crossbow as she looks for the mischievous little daemon. Moving her on the map.

So, finish last round's spell, move to ready weapon and move to go south on the map.

If the GM is okay with a retcon, I'd like to amend Tauni's round as follows:

Suddenly swelled to the size of a petite ogre, Tauni bounded away from the obvious foe and towards the daemon. Trying to use her divination sense to predict where the daemon's flight path would take it, Tauni lunged up, trying to catch it in her massive hands.

Tauni enlarged to twice her normal size and moved toward the flying outsider. Her standard action for the turn was completing the spell, so she does not get to attack, only move.

Anarya channeled more positive energy to keep the librarians from dying and to undo some of the damage done to her friends.

Avelina, thrown off by Ellena's attack on Karas, sends forth another frost ray, but it missed.

I just realized that Tauni should have had to make a concentration check after she took damage from Chalebs negative energy channel. I won't retcon the roll, however.

Below assumes Ellena provides flanking, thus I get sneak attack damage and +2 to hit. Her current state might dictate otherwise?

As Chaleb and Anarya's energies washed over him, Franti fluctuated between great pain and bliss. Franti still smiled, but his teeth were grit, and his breaths were heavy. Spinning on his heel, the goblin swept at the large foe with both arms, a small, green whirlwind of leather and teeth.

Flanking Sneak Attack: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 8 + 2 = 14 for Damage: 1d4 + 5 + 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 5 + (2, 4) + 2 = 16, nonlethal (12 to hit, 8 damage without flank)

Correction to damage: Karas is at 11 damage. Ret-con to allow Tauni to use a hero point to get an extra attack on the cacodaemon.

Looking a bit like a woman trying to swat a fly, the now giant Tauni reached out to grab the tiny cacodaemon as it flew about near the carnage under the chandelier. Tauni knew that these outsiders loved destruction and could actually eat the souls of a deceased individual and turn it into something called a soul gem. As her hand neared the creature, however, it tried to bite her.

The creature managed to bite Tauni's hand 3 points damage. The wound did not seem to get any of the potent disease causing saliva in it however.

Tauni's hand closed but the daemon just managed to fly through her fingers.

Anarya's channeled energy healed the damage to Tauni's hand immediately.

Avelina sent a ray of frost into the fray, but it missed badly. The young woman was uncharacteristically silent after her champion attacked Karas.

Franti kept up his barrage of sap attacks on Chaleb. The first glanced off the man's shield, but the second got past his guard and connected with his kidneys causing more pain 17 non-lethal. Even with his seeming supernatural ability to take damage, the evil man seemed near his limit.

Fenna, the librarian who was fetching books for Chaleb when the crusaders arrived, showed surprising aplomb as she kept trying to untie her friends, hoping to be able to carry them outside to safety, but she cried out in frustration as she struggled with the well-tied knots.

Anevia had her shortsword drawn and cut the ropes binding a halfling librarian #2, freeing him so he could be carried out.

The only other conscious librarian #3 tried to untie himself from the unconscious librarian to his south, but could not.

The cacodaemon flew away from Tauni. Since Tauni is unarmed, she doesn't threaten and so gets no AOO for this movement. It hovered at the southern wall of the room, 20 feet up, near the door, where it studied the fight going on at the north side of the chamber.

Chaleb shifts five feet east, seemingly intent on attacking the fair Avelina. "The beautiful die first," he says, grinning like a maniac.

Pausing here for dramatic effect and to allow anyone who may want to use a hero point to do so. Chaleb appears almost ready to collapse from the non-lethal damage he's absorbed, but he is still plenty dangerous and may get two attacks if his BAB is high enough, which given his powers, seems plausible.

Also I wanted to check to be sure of Avelina's AC. Her "spells active" spoiler says mage armor and shield. That would give her AC 19, correct?

As her head cleared, Ellena felt horror at her previous swipe at the tiefling. "Sorry, Karas. The demon took my mind. I'm back now though," she tried to explain.

Seeing the evil paladin threaten Avelina, Ellena sprang into action. "Fight me, not the noble lady! Clearly, you are cared of my sword."

Of course Ellena would spend a hero point to prevent an attack on Avelina. I'm not exactly sure what I can do with the hero point, but I'll interrupt the action, if possible.

Act Out of Turn: You can spend a hero point to take your turn immediately. Treat this as a readied action, moving your initiative to just before the currently acting creature. You may only take a move or a standard action on this turn.

Note: if one has 2 hero points and the character is killed, there is the following:

Cheat Death: A character can spend 2 hero points to cheat death. How this plays out is up to the GM, but generally the character is left alive, with negative hit points but stable. For example, a character is about to be slain by a critical hit from an arrow. If the character spends 2 hero points, the GM decides that the arrow pierced the character’s holy symbol, reducing the damage enough to prevent him from being killed, and that he made his stabilization roll at the end of his turn. Cheating death is the only way for a character to spend more than 1 hero point in a turn. The character can spend hero points in this way to prevent the death of a familiar, animal companion, eidolon, or special mount, but not another character or NPC.

Avelina would be killed if she took more than 41 points. This guy could do that with a crit or with two normal hits.

Ellena: Post your attack roll and damage. Chaleb's AC is 15. He is evil (in case you couldn't tell).

Each character should have 3 hero points, minus any that have been used already.
