Franti worked diligently, but it took him a half-minute to finally open the lock. Everyone held his or her place, keeping a quiet as possible. The only sound heard by the crusaders was Wenduag, who whispered, "I heard something too."
The door opened and those looking through could see the a remarkable change in the architecture. This large chamber must have once been a cistern for the sewer system. Walls made of identical stone blocks held up a lofty ceiling reinforced with elegant stone arches, while the center of the room contained a more recent-looking structure made of brick walls that reach from floor to ceiling. The room was about 30 feet north to south, but not much could be seen west of about 15 feet. No creatures could be seen.
See Map. Move yourselves in any order you choose but don't move more than you can move in a turn. Make a stealth roll and subtract 5 if you move more than your normal move speed.

Franti put a finger over his mouth to ensure silence, and lead the way with a nervous, pounding heart.

The goblin, without any bells or bright colors, moved silently and deftly towards the wall. He kept close to the surface as he moved south, peeked a quick corner, and beckoned for his friends to enter. The fool turned against the wall, placing himself in a nook. Franti thought that bringing lights in might not be wise, but didn't want his friends left in the dark. He poked his head from his corner and pointed his bow eastward, checking for any foes.

Heart pounding, Franti looked around the corner and saw a dead end. The walls blocking his way were made of random stones mortared together haphazardly, a marked contrast to the south wall made of stones that formed a smooth, flat wall.

I am assuming we have light shining, so anyone on our side of the door will be visible. Yes, we could be in the dark, but only two of us have darkvision and I don't think we all want to be blind around any demons. Thoughts?
Anarya waited with the group, barely daring to breathe. She saw Franti vanish into the darkness, unable to even spot the sneaky goblin-shaped rogue.

Since a couple of players are not able to post as much as usual, I'll move things along a bit, assuming players are taking utmost precautions and maximum stealth.
Karas moved into the room after Franti, checking for demons before admitting light into the chamber. As Franti checked south Karas looked north. The walls that had been added in the old cistern formed a kind of maze. The only way forward was through a gap in the north side of the room where the walls formed a hall that went south and then east.
Once Karas and Franti had ventured out of sight into this hall, the others crept into the room with their lights sheltered behind cloaks to limit their brightness. Anarya dimmed her halo to the brightness of candle flame. But as she entered the chamber, her halo brightened abruptly, giving off a clear white light. She brought it back down but it kept trying to brighten.
Karas and Franti checked a few short dead ends before finding two ways into a hall that ran north south. They peered cautiously around the corners as the others filed into the maze, Ellena and Avelina leading Tauni, Anarya, and the others.

South of Franti, a trio of arcane words in a harsh sounding tongue breaks the silence. Near Karas, a cloud forms and spreads down the halls, around corners to cover both Karas and Franti, stopping just before it reaches Ellena. The cloud stinks of rotten eggs and dead flesh. Franti is overcome with nausea while Karas nearly loses his breakfast, but just keeps functioning. The cloud makes it hard to see, even for those with darkvision. Cloud obscures all sight beyond 5 feet and provides those 5 feet away with 20% miss chance.
Seconds later, more words can be heard, with the sing-song rhythm of a spell being cast. This one lasts for a full round.

Tauni grimaced at the sounds ahead. Knowing none of her spells would help against a foe she couldn't see or in such tight quarters, she pulled her crossbow off of her shoulder, cocked the string and loaded a bolt. "Perhaps we should retreat? Either into more open area, or if they don't follow, wait out their wretched spells?"

Ellena took a deep breath and moved into the sickening cloud of gas. Franti's small form emerged from the mist, starting to hunch over and struggling to hold his breakfast. Ellena could see an open area to the right, but assumed Franti had determined that that was a dead end, so she moved around him and found herself with a choice of going left or right. She tried to figure out the direction to go to intercept the dretch who had cast the stinking cloud, but the only clues she had were a few words far in the distance and the maze made it hard to tell where the sound originated.
She turned left and soon saw Karas on her left and a turn in the maze to the right, still shrouded in the stinking cloud. She turned right and had to turn right again as the passage reversed direction. She ran out of breath just before reaching the edge of the cloud. She will have to make another save if the cloud is still there at the start of her next turn.
She could see beyond the cloud an intersection with options to double back around to her right (east then north), to continue south where it eventually went east and west, and a third way going east and then south. Standing in this last location was a creature she could only assume was a demon. It was shorter than a dwarf but with bulges of fat that made it look bulky and as heavy as a typical male human. It had a mouthful of wicked looking teeth and sharp talons on the ends of its fingers. Its arms dangled nearly to its knees and it had stubby legs. Its skin was mottled red, ochre, and gray, with patches of what looked like moss and course hair. It was concentrating on something and when she came into view it grinned, showing off its long, sharp teeth.

Franti swallowed the growing bile, burning his throat. The goblin was wide eyed as he hobbled out of the cloud. He took a twist to a dead end, put a hand to the wall as he leaned and spit the phlegm he had so quickly gathered. He heaved, but his retching brought no expulsions. Franti's dribbling mouth whispered hoarse curses between gags.

Karas coughed and drew his longsword as he followed behind Ellena. He moved into the open air and growled at the sight of the demon. Risking a swipe of its claws he moved in front of it and let his rage take over.

As Franti tried to recover from the demonic gas attack, Karas trailed Ellena and then darted past her to attack the demon with his sword. The sword cut into the demon but could not get through his thick hide.
The demon could have attacked Karas as he moved into position to get a clean attack, but it seemed to be focused on a spell. As he completed the spell he glanced behind Karas as if expecting something to appear, but when nothing did, it went into a rage of its own attacking Karas with his claws and trying to bite him. It was vicious in its attacks, drawing blood from each attack. Bite does 5, claws do 6 and 2 for at total of 13.

Unable to tell what is happening beyond the cloud, Anarya mustered her courage and rushed forward, taking a deep breath as she plunged into the foul smoke.
She had struggled to restrain her halo's light before, but as she entered the cloud of abyssal magic, the luminous disc burst into a harsh, angry glow. Like armor, it flowed across her body, strengthening the young woman against demonic magic.
(This is the effect of her veil of heaven spell from earlier.)

Hurrying through the maze, she saw vague outlines of walls and openings to either side, but she focused and rushed forward, following what seemed like the most direct path away from where she had entered. In her haste, she nearly slammed into a solid wall which appeared from the haze directly in front of her.

Frantically, she turned left, already almost unable to continue to hold her breath against the sickening vapors. Turning once again, she caught a glimpse of Ellena and managed to pass the larger woman, emerging from the cloud just in time to see the demon's claws savage Karas.
I can just barely get far enough to be adjacent to Karas. Sorry that that makes you unable to get into melee, Ellena. On my next turn, I can heal Karas and move, or move and then heal him as the situation warrants. You could delay until after me, if you want.
The demon's appearance filled Anarya with revulsion. She had never hated anything before, not really, but this creature inspired a filthy, disgusted rage in her very core. Something inside her told her that this being deserved hate, needed to be destroyed. Even as she readied her healing magics to aid Karas, she spat venomously at the creature, "Go back to the Abyss, foul wretch!"

No no no! Tauni thought as the others continued to rush forward. She glanced back over her shoulder, indicated the narrow opening and said "Horgus, guard our retreat! We can't let these things get past us!" With that, she braced herself, tried to predict the movement of the roiling cloud and plunged forward.

Despite the choking mist, she moved forward to support her friends however she could. For a moment she was confused as to which way to go, until she heard Anarya's curse at the dretch. She quickly moved that direction until she came upon Ellena.

This post retcons what was posted 3 posts up. Both Karas and I forgot about the Bless, which would make a difference in the outcome of Karas' attack.
As Franti tried to recover from the demonic gas attack, Karas trailed Ellena and then darted past her to attack the demon with his sword. The sword cut into the demon and the divine blessing of Iomedae, bestowed by Anarya just before entering the room, helped the attack cut through the demon's thick hide.
The creature bellowed and struck out at the raging tiefling in the silver scales. It launched into a vicious assault of claws and teeth, drawing blood from each attack. Bite does 5, claws do 6 and 2 for at total of 13.
All the NPCs delay.
Anarya rushed through the cloud next, holding her breath and making fortunate choices of directions to turn, until she emerged and slipped past Ellena who had just reached the edge of the cloud. Anarya stepped up next to Karas as the demon's claws and teeth ripped at his flesh.
Tauni's action will come after Avelina acts, since Avelina's movement as well as possibly Ellena's could affect where Tauni can end her move. If Avelina doesn't post by Thursday morning, I'll make a fortitude save and advance her. She can follow Anarya if she chooses or make a different turn and head south where Anarya headed north.

The second the words left Avelina's mouth, she began to realize the error of opening her mouth wide to shout in the middle of a cloud of nauseating gas.

Avelina gamely strode into the sickly colored mist trailing slightly behind Ellena and Anarya, but she tried to speak and immediately began to feel like she would be violently ill. She began to fall behind her comrades until she was alone in the mist. Her isolation was short, however, as the mist dissipated like dew before Saranrae's golden light. She found herself facing north in a hall that ran south 20 feet and turned west. She could hear the sounds of battle around the corner to the north.
Avelina glanced back and saw a short, evil demon trundle toward her, cackling with glee. It snapped its jaws at her but closed its teeth too soon as it anticipated the taste of human flesh.

Round 2 (retcon).
Tauni called upon the peaceful power intrinsic in the scale she carried, hoping it would help ward her against such dark entities. She moved forward, turning with the corridor and past Franti until she came upon the demon assaulting Avelina. Upon seeing the horror, she called out "Ellena! Karas! There's another one here!"
Standard action to activate the Sanctuary on her scale, and a move action to get to the square diagonally between Franti and the dretch.

The DC to hear the sound of battle is -10, so unless you are deaf or very far away, you can assume you hear sounds from any melee attacks. In this case, the demon is making growling noises and such and certainly not trying to be stealthy.
As Ellena feels her breath running out, the stinking cloud clears, allowing her to take a big breath of non-nauseating air. She hears Avelina retching, having apparently been unable to stomach the smell and then Ellena hears the sound of a growl and Avelina give a grunt and a squeal of alarm.
If Ellena attacks Dretch 1 from square (7,5), she will take a -4 penalty to her attack due to the corner of the passage.

When Anevia heard the sound of a second dretch moving through the halls, she directed Wenduag to move away from the other two at the rear and limped as quickly as she could until she had a line of sight down the hall, in case she got a clear shot at the demon. She knocked one of the cold iron arrows she got from Neathholm and watched the hall for movement. She was right behind Tauni.
"Sounds like two dretches, just as promised," she said to alert Horgus and Aravashnial of the situation.

Ellena moves to the side of her Lady, brandishing her sword and gleaming shield proudly. She swings the magical blade of Radiance at the demon, wondering if the blade was as magnificent as the stories said.

Karas was bleeding profusely but the energy around him had begun its work sealing his wounds. He kept hold of the sword and lashed out with blade and claw. As he did so, his tail subconciously drew a potion from his pouch should he need it.

Don't forget to add the bonus from the bless: +1 to attacks. In this case, it would not have changed the outcome, but with Ellena it came close.

As Avelina struggled to avoid the attacks of the demon and to master her roiling stomach, she was no doubt heartened by the sight of her hero, Ellena, round the corner, shield and sword blazing with divine light, to attack the demon. The corner of the hallway saved the creature, which limited Ellena's angle of attack and allowed it to avoid the slash of light. It growled with new wrath at the sight of the paladin.
The other dretch had it's own problems dealing with the raging Karas. Although Karas' sword did not glow or possess any magic, its cold iron bit cruelly into the flesh of the dretch, which oozed blue-black blood. His claw failed to find any vulnerable spot, however. The demon looked like it couldn't take any more wounds.
Still, it did not go down quietly. It attacked Karas again. It only succeeded in further injuring itself. It fell to the ground with a groaning thud and lay still.
Franti felt somewhat better as he breathed fresh air, but still couldn't concentrate on anything other than moving a little.

Anarya breathed a sigh of relief at seeing the demon fall. "Ellena?" she said, glancing over her shoulder as the paladin turned back down the hall. "She must have seen another one. Karas, go!" she said, casting her healing spell to aid in closing Karas's wounds. She held her mace threateningly over the fallen demon, wary in case it had regenerative powers. She smiled at him as she laid her hand on his scaled skin.

Since Franti is still nauseated and can only make a move action and since he doesn't really have anywhere he can move, I'm going to assume he is delaying. His nausea will end at the start of Dretch 1's next turn. If he wants, he can retroactively take his turn in the normal order.
Anarya touched Karas and her divine energy flowed into his body and healed the worst of the damage done by the dretch.

Franti heaved once more though nothing came out. He leaned against the wall, trying to breathe deeply to regain his composure. He left his little passage and walked passed Anevia, continueing past Tauni. Franti covered his mouth as he spoke. "This way, little Rabbit?" He wasn't sure what left him in this condition, but was intent on returning the favor with cold-iron arrows. The fool stepped deeper into the labyrinth.

Avelina's eyes brightened at the sight of Her Champion flying to her rescue. She quickly ran around the corner, not wanting Ellena's heroic moment to be ruined by a vomiting Avelina.

As Franti moved into position to attack, Avelina made way for Ellena to have the glory of killing the Dretch. The dretch, however, was not about to go quietly into the evil abyss. It had planned on trying to affect Ellena with demonic magic to make her flee in terror, but with Franti recovering from his nausea and standing so close, it could not do that without the risk of leaving itself open to an attack that might spoil the spell.
The demon instead threw himself at Ellena, a blur of claws and teeth, with saliva splashing from its open mouth. For all that, only one claw slashed some scratches along the side of her neck. The magic in her shield made the difference between the wound cutting deep enough to cause a more serious wound. 3 points damage.

Ellena scoffs at the scratch from the demon. "You're not tough enough to stop the Inheritor's army, demon!". She is a blur as she swings Raidiance, and attempts to cleave through the beast.

As she moved along with Franti, Tauni pointed down toward the dretch. "Just there." She slipped behind Franti and raised her crossbow, quietly praying Abadar, guide my aim; let us help these noble crusaders against this darkest of evil. With that, she released one of her new cold iron bolt.

Move past Franti and immediately south of him. Firing at the dretch (and foregoing the protection of the sanctuary effect.

Between aiming around Franti and dealing with the risk of hitting Ellena, Tauni's arrow glanced first off a wall and the arrow shattered.
Anevia moved forward and aimed her shortbow past Avelina, prepared to fire should the dretch round the corner to attack her.
Aravashnial finished his conjuring and a celestial leopard appeared nearby and began loping toward the conflict, his eyes glowing golden.
The leopard reached the dretch and went to bite it as Ellena threatened it with her glowing sword. The powerful creature's jaws closed on the back of the dretch's neck and there was the sound of bones snapping. The dretch gave a strangled cry and collapsed, where the leopard continued to bite and claw at its body until it was dead.
Melee over. Things would have been much more challenging if they had managed to summon one or two more dretches to fight, but both attempts failed. Congratulations on your first demon kills. Role play your victory, and then update your characters to 3rd level. When everyone is updated, it will be on up into Kenabres.

Karas turned and grinned at the angel as he moved past her to try to get to the threat. Seeing it over, he let his rage subside. He huffed for a few moments as the others celebrated. He still smiled though. A dead demon is as good a start as any in my book.

Franti stopped gagging right as the last dretch fell. Though he didn't personally fight, he felt a small sense of accomplishment. I didn't run this time. We are almost out of here.. Even though the creature was dead, Franti's heart beat heavily. He approached the demon with unease and nervousness. Would I have of faced it? Could I have struck it like Ellena or Karas? Franti's shape began to twist as he resumed his human form. After whatever spell the dretch cast, he appeared bleak, almost gaunt.
"Let's get out of here. Maybe we'll resurface right outside the city. We could be miles away from Kenabres." Franti removed chalk from his bag, and begins to mark the walls. He searches the small maze, and while he finds himself in a dead end, he eventually locates the exit. He draws little arrows pointing to the path out. "I swear I can smell it already. Green pastures. Tilled soil. Flowers, even." Franti smiled.
Think it would be DC 20, for a hunch.

Tauni looked on in awe as the celestial creature pounced and finished the demon. When it vanished in victory, she knew it was the elf's creature. One day, I'll be able to do such things. Maybe the he'd be willing to teach me...
As Franti searches the small maze, Tauni follows along, using her minor spell to seek out any magic auras.

The party found nothing else of value. The corpses of the demons began to decompose almost as soon as they were dead, filling the halls with an unpleasant smell of spoiled meat and keeping everyone on edge. But nothing else was found in the maze except a door at the far end that looked as if it had not been used much. It was not locked or trapped. Beyond the door was an old tunnel with muddy ground and a musty smell of old sewage and humus.
