Male Human Aristocrat 4

After listening to Franti's vision of what they might soon find, Horgus scoffed, "Don't get your hopes up. Farmers don't build sewers under their fields. If we're lucky, though, we'll come up close to my manor. Remember, there's a reward of gold for you all if you get me to my house and there my vault has not been broken into."

Male Elf

Aravashnial lifted the bandages over his eyes and looked around, hoping to see clearly. His face soured with disappointment. "If we find ourselves close to the Librarium of the Broken Black Wing, I have comrades who might have survived and might be able to help."

Female human Rogue 3

Anevia moved through the maze and stood by the door near Franti, a mix of hope and dread on her face. She said nothing.

Sorry, still on finals week, and now I'm sick on top of it D:

Feeling emboldened by her increased strength and vitality and from retching while her party killed the demons helping kill the demons, Avelina walked with even more spring in her step than usual. Shge interposed herself in front of Anevia, turning to speak with her while walking backwards.

"Do not worry, Darling! The Favor of the Inheritor is with us, and I'm sure it's with your wife just as well!"

Avelina could not help but glance towards Anarya and Karas.

"Love is powerful, and the Inheritor shall surely protect such love!"

Franti's elation surged as they drove closer to the surface. He looked to the soft ground, gesturing to the small footprints, hardly noticeable. "See? Everyone's hasty to get out, we are missing quite the party." Franti swelled, his spirits almost as high as before his interrogation with Wenduag.

He turned to the mongrelwoman, wondering if she shared his joy. "When was the last time you saw sunlight, Wendy? " He spun his saps, almost juggling them as he walked. “You'll have to do my face paint before this ends. Once in a lifetime opportunity for both of us. Shame to see it slip though our fingers before this journey ends.

Franti turned to Karas, light on his feet, taking quick steps to reach the tiefling. He no longer wore a smile. "You... Live here? I thought you'd live, well, I guess I never gave it thought." Franti's stomach twisted. He gave his attention to the others. "Where do you all call home?"

Wenduag did not immediately answer as she appeared to study Franti for several breaths. "Sunlight hurts my eyes. As for your face, I expect the demons controlling the city will carve it up before I have a chance." Whether she meant before she had the chance to paint it or carve it up, she left hanging.

"And so the crusaders who fell into the abyss of caves and tunnels under Kenabres moved ever closer to returning to the surface. They started as strangers but quickly became friends with a dramatic shared story to tell. But they all wondered whether anyone was left in the city to tell.

"They had lost track of time in the sunless underworld. When last they saw the sun, it was a day of hope, but when they fell, they had already witnessed the destruction of the Kite and, presumably, the wardstone. For all they knew, there would be no city for them to return to.

"As they made their way past the mongrel lair, they found themselves in an old sewer system. After trudging along a dried out remnant, they found an ancient set of ladder rungs connecting to a higher level. This level had fresh water in puddles. After another ladder they came to just below street level. They could see out holes near the top of the tunnel that allowed storm water to flow into the tunnels. No light filtered in with the air. They all stopped and listened. No sounds could be heard. The holes were too small to allow anyone, even the diminuative Franti in goblin form, to get out of the sewers. A short distance further and they came upon a disconcerting sight: dried patches of blood splashed on the walls from where it apparently had flowed from the streets into the sewer.

"They continued until they came to another ladder."

The old storyteller paused, savoring the look of excitement on the faces of the children hearing the story for the first time. He patted his pot-belly and sniffed the air. "Time for a feast. The story will continue after everyone has eaten." Groans of protest arose from the many children who would have gladly foregone supper to learn the next part of the story without delay.

Ellena could tell they were getting closer to the town. Every level they made it up gave clues they were almost up to their destination. The paladin tried to ignore the grisly scene before her. The excitement that Tauni had been experiencing was anticipation of feeling the sun on her face again and breathing fresh air. Now, that anticipation has been replaced with cold dread. What would they find above? Did anyone survive the onslaught? Would they be greeted by friends? Would they be greeted by a desolate ruin of a battlefield? Or perhaps a residual horde of demons. She pursed her lips as Ellena moved up to enter the surface world again.

Franti began to whistle, though stopped as the party neared closer to the surface. At the sight of blood, he reigned himself in. Not the time for such glee, he thought, Save it for when this is all behind me. The fool clasped the iron rung, turning and nodding to Tauni, attempting to reassure her. He began his ascent to the surface, trying to force away his growing grin.

Anarya's brow furrowed with concern at the sight of the blood - so much blood - dried on the walls of the dismal sewer. Her halo flickered, responding to her uncertainty, though it resumed its steady glow as her resolve hardened. As the others climbed, she tried to convince herself that they would find hope up above, on the bloody streets of Kenabres. She joined them on the ladder, the thought that even a single person might need her help filling her with determination.

Ellena reached the metal grate that was flush with the level of a street. The view up between the metal parts of the grate was unenlightening. No light was visible, which might just mean that it was night. Ellena pushed up on the grate and although it was heavy, it yielded to her strength and she was able to set it aside, although it gave a loud clank as it hit the ground.

Note: directions of north, south, etc. in the descriptions refer to the top, bottom, etc. of the map. Nobody yet knows which way is really north, so don't make any assumptions yet about where in the city this is. It's just easier to describe things when you have directions you can name.

Ellena stepped up another rung of the ladder and looked around. It was night and no stars or moon could be seen overhead. No other lights could be seen and so she could only see a small circle of her current location as revealed by the light of her sword.

She saw a building just five feet to the north and another about ten feet south part of a line of buildings stretching west. A large wall loomed to the east. To the northwest was an open area, like a marketplace plaza, except the only sign of commerce was a collapsed tent with wares strewn about as if looters searched it and took what they wanted and scattered the rest, mostly rugs and bolts of cloth.

Beyond the open area, where the light from her sword grew dim, she could see rubble, as if a line of buildings had collapsed. Blackened timbers in the debris suggested the buildings had burned after they collapsed. What she could see of the buildings to the south of the marketplace, the doors were open and windows broken, but the buildings stood, looking sad and empty.

Beyond these remnants of the city that once was, there was no evidence that anyone was nearby, although the wall of darkness that extended beyond the light of Radiance could conceal much.

Post what characters are doing, but limit movement to what could be done in one round for now.

"They're probably hiding from demons, rather than glowing out here." Franti whispered sharply as he reached the surface. "Do we look for shelter or just book it out of the city?" He shifted into his Goblinoid form, and drew his bow. Franti searched the darkness for a place to hide, or for a way out. He glanced to the southern building. On Spring Break now, and mostly not sick any more, so I can get back in the swing of things now!

Avelina popped out of the grate with a grin on her face, expecting to see crowds of expectant civilians and crusaders just waiting to see their Heroic Princess and Her Entourage emerging from their Perilous Quest. Her face fell instantly.

"By the Goddess...I had hoped that we would...that they would...."

She bit her lip, her body beginning to shake as she realized just what this might mean.

"I hope...I mean I know...yes...they will be alright. Everyone is okay. They have to be."

She snapped to attention as she heard Ellena's resolve to move forward. Avelina ran up to Her Champion, then turned around towards the others and smiled, reassured that everything would be fine. She pumped a fist as she placed a hand on her hip.

"Yes! That's a wonderful, beautiful, glorious idea! We...can start there!"

Tauni stepped to the side of the opening (west), and looked around with a grimace. She tucked a hand into her satchel and stroked Cobblepaw's fur, reassuring herself that at least one friend from before was with her and trying not to despair that all others were lost.

Anarya looked around, dazed for a few moments. Her home, the city she had grown up in, was shattered. Never was Kenabres this still, this dark. Even at night, the lights of a thousand torches, lamps, and magic spells lit the air. The city looked like a beacon, for that's what it was. Now, though... the beacon was snuffed out.

Anarya:
While Anarya does not recognize where in the city she is, she feels confident it is not Old Kenabres.

It used to a simple matter to find one's bearings at night in Kenabres. One needed only to look for the lights illuminating the kite and the temples in Old Kenabres, the highest points in the city, visible from almost any street. This night, no light penetrated the darkness except the lights the crusaders brought with them.

A quick look around corners of buildings revealed the only way they could go from here would be into the market square, as the wall blocked all paths east and a rubble choked courtyard blocked movement south.

As they discussed the situation, Karas was first to notice a sound. He held up a hand to silence the conversations and then everyone could hear it. (Except Anarya.)

Avelina, Ellena, Tauni:
These can hear the sound of weeping. It is coming from the northwest, somewhere beyond the reach of the light.

Karas, Franti:
These can hear the sound of weeping. With darkvision, they also spot the approximate location, coming from the rubble about 60' northwest.

Anarya:
Anarya looks where the others are looking, but she can't tell what they are looking at. She sees the edges of the collapsed and burned buildings.

Tauni:
Tauni hears the weeping, but senses it might not be genuine.

Avelina, Ellena, Karas, Franti:
The sounds of weeping seem genuine to all of these characters.

Franti began to speak, uttering a high pitched syllable before hearing the weeping sounds to the northwest. He looked to Karas, staring at the same rubble he had just been. Franti wanted to continue the argument, he wanted to save these new friends from the certain death this city stored for them, but he swallowed the thoughts with an anxious, literal gulp. He turned to Anarya, filling her in. "Weeping, that way." He turned away, back to the cries, "Something we can agree on..."

Franti took steps towards the darkness, but remembering the ghostly child the Kobold tricked with his earlier, kept his bow in hand, nocked. "I can see in this darkness, Karas, Ellena, I'll provide cover." The little goblin moved towards the destroyed tent, finding himself cover as he leaned the corner, looking for the demons he feared.

Tauni readied her crossbow and loaded it. "Be careful. It sounds like a ruse to me."

Karas huffed and looked determinedly in the direction of the crys.

"Ruse or not, we need to get moving and checking that out sounds like a good first move to me."

He nodded to Franti, drew his sword, and started walking towards the sounds.

Unable to see most of the conversation, all Anarya knew was that Karas was drawing his sword, Ellena was rushing off into the darkness, and Tauni was worried. Weeping, Franti had said, with his strangely elongated goblin mouth. She didn't see an enemy, but she knew she needed to stay near her friends. Her halo shimmered, responding to her uncertainty as it sought to protect her with a ward against unholy magic.

If Ellena ignored Tauni's warning and heads off into the darkness, Anarya will follow some distance behind.

Sorry, simple ole Ellena thinks she hears someone in trouble, so she's going to help them. Unless she gets eaten first, lol.

Tauni tried to keep tabs on where the others were running, but stayed at the opening to make sure that the others got up out of the sewer okay and knew which way the others are heading.

As Karas led the way toward the sounds of weeping and Franti crept up to a hiding place amount the edges of the collapsed tent, Ellena and Avelina trailed a few feet behind, their light spells illuminating the area in dim light. Anarya was between the advancing crusaders and Tauni who was watching over the others coming up from the sewers.

There appeared to be a woman trying to hide herself in the debris, her dress torn and dirty, with smears of blood. She apparently saw the holy symbol of Iomedae on Ellena's shield, for she said, "Praise the Inheritor. Hide! There are demons about!" Then she sobbed some more.

Just as she finished saying that, the sound of a small group of heavy footsteps and snuffling growls could be heard from the general vicinity of a tent still standing further west of the crusaders, visible only to those who could see in the dark.

Avelina, Ellena, Franti, Tauni:
Having recently heard the sounds of demons, these sound more like a stage-play sound effect of what people think demons sound like as they approach.

PC and NPC Allies Initiative Order
Does not include enemies, so only the next in the order should post to allow the GM a chance to post for enemies if they are next in the order.
This is round 1 of initiative, since both sides were alert to the possibility that enemies are in the area. But until a character has acted in the first initiative round, he/she is flat-footed (unless he/she has uncanny dodge) and may not make Attacks of Opportunity (unless he/she has combat reflexes).

Franti heard the noises coming from the tent he saw in the edges of his vision. He doubted them, he had made the very same kinds of sound in his impersonations of demons. He looked to the woman, and made steps to the west.

Franti barked loudly, hoping everyone could hear. "You're all faking, take it from a fool, it needs work. Come out."He aimed his bow towards the tent, waiting for the "demons."

Tauni will delay until after Wenduag; she is making sure that Wenduag, Anevia, Horgus and Aravashnial have gotten up and are ready to follow the others.

Map of the Marchlands | Wintersun Hall

The NPCs at the back reached the surface just as the sound of demons was heard, so if Tauni wants to take an action, she doesn't have to delay. Horgus and Anevia are keeping an eye on Wenduag and guiding Aravashnial as needed. Aravashnial cannot cast any new conjurations, as he already used up his prepared spells days ago and can only cast one spell per day using his bonded object, which he did during the battle with the dretches. Once Tauni has posted, I'll post their actions and possibly one or more enemy actions.

Tauni advanced cautiously, crossbow raised to her shoulder and looking for a target in the darkness.

Moved on the map and ready an action to shoot any foe coming from the tent.

Cor-Altim: mwk Greatsword: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Scariani: Light crossbow, target flat-footed: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Tauni advanced, ready to shoot her bow at an enemy yet to emerge. Horgus drew his rapier and watched Wenduag for any false moves.

From a hiding place in the rubble, a man rushed out onto the cobblestones and ran at Karas. He held a brick about a foot and a half across, about to hurl it at Karas before he had a chance to react. He wore leather armor and a buckler and had no large weapons on his belt.

Before he could throw the brick, Franti whirled in his direction and let fly a blunt arrow which struck him in the side. 4 non-lethal. This did not deter the man who let fly his brick, which struck Karas a glancing blow in the head. 9 damage.

At almost the exact same time, a great roar startled Franti, who was looking in the opposite direction. From a wooden shack built against the buildings to the south emerged a huge man, well over six feet tall, with ugly scars on his chest and odd deformations in his limbs. His scars had been embellished with tattoos. "Patu, tipua paru!"* he cried as his greatsword rose and crashed down just in front of Franti, causing sparks to fly from the pavement stones.

*Hallit:
Die, filthy goblin!

A loud twang from the vicinity of the tent in the west preceded a crossbow bolt whizzing past Karas. The sounds of the approaching demons continued, although nothing appeared.

Karas gave the man with a brick a funny look just before the brick smashed into his head. He recoiled with his head in his hand a moment. When he looked back, His eyes were glowing white as his Bloodrage took over and his features shifted.

He was about to step in on the now unarmed man but the screaming giant drew his attention as the sword nearly hit Franti. He gripped his Cold-Iron Longsword in both hands and charged the man, placing more brutality into the swing than grace.
