To answer #2, no, you're not required or even expected the buy the scenario. There's a couple different systems that local groups use to manage their scheduling and signups and they often post a link to the scenario page in the shop for reference purposes.

The shop page can be useful to look at the scenario's blurb (similar to the back of a book giving you an idea what it's about). It can be helpful in deciding which of your characters would be the most fun to play the scenario with.

Thank you! That makes sense.

Forked off a thread for this, since it doesn't seem like guide feedback:

Learn a Spell from Pathfinder Training

I had a question about accruing fame. From the PLAYER BASICS section of the guide it says:

"Fame represents your standing within the Pathfinder Society. You accrue Fame every time you complete a quest, scenario, or other sanctioned adventure. You’ll accrue it at roughly the same pace as XP, though these two numbers will not necessarily be identical."

I played #1-02 Mosquito Witch at GenCon, but our judge didn't assign or award any fame points (I checked a box saying I was with Envoy's Alliance). To be fair, nobody new what they were doing that Thursday, seeing as how the guide was published at around midnight just the day before.

Should I have 4 Envoy's Alliance fame? Do you earn fame simply by completing modules with that faction's boon slotted? Must the module explicitly state you earn fame, and then only *if* you have the correct boon slotted? Are there details on how to award fame written explicitly in a part of the module?

Any help appreciated.

Purchasing equipment:

Quote:

As you complete adventures, you will gain more wealth that can be used to buy any common item that is no more than 2 levels higher than

your current level. Uncommon items may be granted by Chronicle sheets or through other special boons. Characters with the appropriate
crafting feats may also be able to obtain formulas for equipment that they can create during Downtime.

- Unclear wording on if the max level + 2 and no uncommon restriction apply to puchasing formulas - I'm assuming yes? (It's worded as "may also be able" which kinda puts it separate)

- Formulas themselves don't seem to have their own rarity, unless I missed it in the rulebook. If it's the intent might be worth clarifying for this purpose it'd be based on the rarity of the item they create?

The Exchange 4/5 5/5

More clarifications on boons:

The Service boons presented in the Guide are intended to be purchased at the end of the scenario. They are used instantaneously. But they aren't tagged as "slotless." Do I have to keep a boon slot open in case I want to buy and use one?
-Pretty sure the answer is "no" but there is ambiguity. Either add language saying that service boons do not require an open boon slot or add the Slotless tag to the ones in the Guide. I prefer adding the Slotless tag, as that leaves open the possibility of future Service boons that do require an open slot.

The Advanced boon slot is needless complexity. You have a Faction boon slot, an Advanced boon slot, and three generic boon slots. You can only use one Advanced boon at a time, and it can only be slotted in the Advanced boon slot, but you can slot a generic boon in the Advanced boon slot if you want to.
-Just make it a Faction boon slot and four additional slots. "You can only use one Advanced boon at a time" conveys the same information very simply.

Leshy Companion says that you "can ignore the prerequisite of belonging to the lead order." Should say "leaf order."

Promotional Vestments: Typo in the word "circumstance."

The Exchange 4/5 5/5

Last post about the boons (I hope!)

Service boons are inconsistent in specifying whether or not you can buy them more than once. Bequeathal and Resurrection Plan specify you can buy them multiple times, and Untarnished Reputation specifies that you can only buy it once. But Meticulous Appraiser, Swift Traveler, and Sellback Plan don't specify one way or the other. Can they be bought more than once?

Capstone boons: I see a header labeled "Capstone Boons" while browsing the faction boon list, but I don't see that defined anywhere. Are PFS2 capstone boons like SFS capstones - each PC can only purchase one, and only one can be assigned to a PC? If so, add a "Capstone" trait to each of these boons and define the trait in the Boon Traits rules. If not, remove the header completely and don't reference the word "Capstone."

I was going to list all the boons where the traits in the table don’t match the traits given for that boon in the list but honestly there’s a ton of them and I have no idea what the intention for each is. Please take another pass through them and match them up.

There is an AcP value missing in the AcP table; GM a Quest at a premier event. Based off the rest of the values in the table where GMs get double player values, I assume it is meant to be 2.

Pardon me if this question does not belong here.

In PF1E there is a Core and a "Regular" campaign. Will there be the same thing for PF2E, and what happens to a PC that is created now with, obviously, just the Core Rulebook II, when more Rulebooks come out? Can that character be retained as core?

There are actually two methods to generate PFS character ability scores detailed on page 20 of the Core Rulebook.

For the sake of new players reading for the first time, you may want to clarify that PFS does not use the alternative method.

Can a section be added to the GM section on the reporting sheet (after the sheet has been update to be easier to use). The confusing part is the Fame earned. Because it is in the top part where gm info it I have had GMs put full credit in there even when the party don't earn full credit.

One of the things trying to go through the guide. Under Quick Start Guide, there is Register for Organized Play. This takes you through the steps for making a brand new account without having a GM give you a Organized Play ID number at a game.

It doesn't take you through how to register with one of the cards we give out at games for new players. I know in the past this has caused people to end up with two numbers and contacting customer service to get them merged.

Could this be added to help solve confusion?

Resolving negative conditions at the end of the scenario

Player Basics tells you that

Quote:
The Pathfinder Society has resources to take care of its members, and many of the possible negative effects an adventurer can be subject to during an adventure are assumed to be taken care of during Downtime. The exceptions to this are death, permanent petrification or polymorph effects, curses, and permanent negative conditions (Core Rulebook 618–623) acquired during the course of the adventure. These negative effects must be cleared at the end of the adventure or the character must be reported as “dead,” unable to continue adventuring in Pathfinder Society organized play. Most of these negative effects can be cleared by spending Fame for the appropriate service on Table 2: All-Factions Boons.

The only boon that affects any of those conditions is Resurrection Plan, which only takes care of death. Should there be additional all-factions boons or is it intended that the other conditions can only be cleared by spending gold for spellcasting services?

On a closely related note, there might be a problem with paying gold to come back to life based on the Option Access rules:

Quote:
Common options from the Core Rulebook are always available for use. Uncommon options typically require a specific condition to be met to take them;

Both the resurrect ritual and the raise dead spell are uncommon. I assume that PCs should be able to buy spellcasting services for at least these two, but not have wholesale access to spellcasting services of all uncommon spells and rituals. Please put in a table showing which uncommon spellcasting services are considered always available to Pathfinders.

This is also a question I have been unable to answer for my players. Are players allowed to use other skills, and assuming the DC Adjustment table 10-6 is used, which Difficulty applies?

Secondly, regarding Pathfinder Training, are pregens allowed a level-appropriate consumable from the All-Schools Table at the start of the session?

Finally, how does Downtime work, specifically in terms of skill modifiers, for a player using a level 5 pregen to apply credit as a yet-to-be-built lower level character?

DC for other skils is, unclear but according to the DC adjustments table it is likely at least +2, really could use a clarification.

I recall reading somewhere that the pregens have received more consumables to account for them not being to benefit from training, might have been in the announcement blog of the Pathfinder Training (or in the comments).

RE level 5 pre-gens, I let players do a level 3 dayjob with the pregen's mod, given a lack of alternatives or clarification.
A clear ruling would be very welcome.

It would be helpful if the section on downtime also included some clarifications on the choices players can make using the Train Animal feat which is legal and a part of many backgrounds.

Based command an animal: "Most animals know the Leap, Seek, Stand, Stride, and Strike basic actions. If an animal knows an activity, such as a horse’s Gallop, you can Command the Animal to perform the activity, but you must spend as many actions on Command an Animal as the activity’s number of actions. , Core Rulebook pg. 249

Train Animal appears to be a way that players can spend downtime to expand this list (ostensibly to do things like train a companion to make an athletics check to shove or trip), but it seems like we'd need a list of valid actions and amount of downtime required for this to work in PFS.

Even if animal companions don't need that feat to do those alternate actions, a player who takes that feat to train a regular animal currently lacks the guidance to do so. It's in several backgrounds in the core rule book and the lost omens world guide.

Please! Please! Please! so something about the formatting of the boon listings. It is a laundry list of enteries and the title of each boon is formatted the same as the entry text, while the "prerequisite" and "cost" are bold. It makes it very difficult to scan through the list in order to find the boon you are looking for. Maybe use larger font and italics/bold or something so the title of each boon is obvious to the eye.

Perhaps it would also be possible to hyperlink the boon name in the chart lists at the top to the listing lower in the page to allow for quick location of the rules you are looking for. This would be especially helpful for some common items like "promotional" boons. Thx

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/5 ***

The "promotional vestments" boon is a tad weak, IMO. Sure its free, but with a limited number of boon slots, it will quickly lose its relative value. We should consider bumping it to something like '+X' with 'X' equal to the character's reputation level (minimum 1) or perhaps the player's number of glyphs (again minimum 1).

Also, I think we should expand the "promotional accessory" boon so there is a wider range of options. Each accessory could be associated with a different condition so the player could select the one that best helps their character. Frigtened and stupified are nice options, but what about clumsy, slowed, sickened—all good candidates for a boon assist. Sure it means you have to guess right each scenario, but some conditions are more effective against certain builds. A rogue (for example) might prefer to choose clumsy as the condition they can counter with their boon.

Second these thoughts (as well as Kevin Willis' earlier). Also, please think about how people will actually use these resources. Having a giant alphabetical list of the boons doesn't help people who are looking at what a faction has to offer; it is a big headache looking at the faction's list, finding the boon, going back to the list, finding the next one. Please organize the boons by faction, and by tier within the faction, the way that players will actually be looking them up.

Yes, this!

Also, hyperlinks in the overall boon table to the individual boons, and a "back to table" backlink in the boons, would be extremely convenient.

Minor wording suggestion: changing the phrasing around hero points to make it clear that it is something GMs should do, not an optional rule. (Or if the intention is for GM-awarded Hero Points to be optional, make that more clear.)

Quoting myself from this discussion

Quote:

The Guide currently says:

"At the beginning of an adventure, each player receives 1 Hero Point. GMs can then hand out additional Hero Points throughout the session in recognition of the characters’ deeds, at a rate of approximately 1 Hero Point per hour of play. When handing out Hero Points, try to spread them out throughout the table rather than giving most of the points to one player."

If the phrase "GMs can then hand out..." were changed to "GMs should then hand out..." would we all be on the same page? I think there should be a little flexibility rather than mandating exactly one per hour, but I don't think Hero Points are intended to be optional in Organized Play.

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/5 ***

I don’t want hero points to be compulsory outside of the initial award and any from promotional items until/unless the designers provide A LOT more instruction to how hero points factor into the design parameters of the system mechanics. I’m not yet convinced that the mechanics are written with the expectation that players will have as many as one hero point per hour. To me, the hero points simply seem to be a bonus tool to help the players succeed more than the math would normally allow. As such, IMO they should be a GM discretionary award not a compulsory one. YMMV

Bob Jonquet wrote:

When that's the suggestion from the Core Rulebook (pg 507), what makes you think it's not built into the mechanics of the game?

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/5 ***

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Given that they placed an emphasis on specific language in this edition, I find the repeated use of “could” instead of “should” when discussing the rewarding of hero points to be meaningful. Though I admit, that is not entirely definitive, which is why I am not sternly confident, more inquisitively curious. Maybe the intent is that HP are meant to be compulsory. I just don’t see that in the language. So, until/unless I see more commentary from the designers I’ll treat it like most rules questions and be conservative. YMMV

On a side notes, my g/f and I bought six packs (nearly $100 worth) of hero point tokens at Gen Con so we could award the maximum during any game we GMd. So, we’re not totally against the idea of awarding them regularly. We just don’t want to do so unnecessarily and have a negative impact on the game play making things too easy. Rerolls are one of the most powerful bonuses a player can have. Not only are they worth more than ‘+3’ to the roll, but they significantly reduce the chances of a crit fail and increase crit success. Given what I’ve experienced of 2E so far, I’m not yet sure if that is too much of an advantage. I would rather proceed cautiously. Taking things away from players after they have them is almost always a disaster so I’d rather have the flexibility to increase my rate of reward than to start reducing if it’s too much.

Since I made this point in a different thread: In my experience, giving out one hero point per hour to *one PC at the table* hasn't been all that disruptive. I was running 1-01 at a local gameday last weekend, and the rougly one Hero Point per hour was a good way for me to call out the MVP of the last part/encounter; I just made sure not to double up which players got additional Hero Points.
Initially, I thought that the guidance was to give 1 point to everyone each hour, and I agree that that is way too many to give out.

Sczarni 5/5 5/55/5 ***

The Core Rulebook also advises only one per hour.

The Player Basics has this to say about Access

Quote:
Access: Some uncommon options have an entry labeled “Access.” If you satisfy the access condition by being from the specified region, a member of a particular organization, or meeting some similar requirement, that option is common for you. All characters created for use in Pathfinder Society Organized Play are members of the Pathfinder Society organization in the world of Golarion, so they gain access to options that require membership in the Pathfinder Society.

This paragraph is where plain language runs up against game mechanics, and hits a brick wall when people decide to be overliteral. Prerequisites and Access are two different things, each of which may have multiple parts, all of which must be met to take an uncommon option. If, for example, there is an uncommon option with

Prerequisite: Membership in the Pathfinder Society Access: Master in heavy armor.
I could name multiple players who will argue that the line in the Guide says "I gain access to options that require Membership in the Pathfinder Society, so I gain access to this option regardless of my proficiency in heavy armor." Fortunately the fix is easy.

No where in the guide or under Earn Income does it tell us what we are increasing these DCs by or if we are not allowing additional skills. I've been quoted this section by a player to allow them a check using a skill other Craft, Lore, or Performance. I have no DC modifier or other ruling to base it off of.

I only suggest because people that play both 1E and 2E and going between the 2 systems use the same term. Now these w terms are effectively the same concept.

So somethign maybe in parenthesis or quotes stating:
"Day job is the same thing as Earn Income. This term derives from 1E and jhas the same concept."

The reasoning behind this is some people still see this as the same thing, and if we have new people only have ever played 2E will understand the term. Some people have been using the term Day Job since the beginning and change is really not easiy. Then eventually phase it out over time. Just a suggestion.
