This is a thread for content the community creates for fellow GMs to use in the Age of Ashes Adventure Path. It will be spoiler-heavy, so players should not read any further.
I will be making maps for my group and will provide links here for all to use. I will start things off with the first map of book one and will add more maps as I have time to create them. If anyone else would like to share their creations, please provide links to your work.

Knowing my players, when they get to the Reliant Book Company they are going to pull some books from the shelves to see if there is anything interesting. I have created a list of ten books for them to find and thought I'd share it with other GMs who might have similar players. Included with the titles is a brief description and author name.

These look great, but when I first wandered into this thread I expected it to be for stuff where map content doesn't already exist; like
I'm curious why you're recreating maps instead of using the existing art. Is it a "quality when zoomed in" thing? Was it because you kicked off your campaign before the PDFs were available?

When I started running Rise of the Runelords two years ago the community content thread was around for a long time already and I found it to be a veritable treasure trove for game prep. I figured why not give back to the community, so I decided to share the maps I was creating for my own group.
I use a 40" TV on my table for combat encounters, and when using the existing art enlarged to 1" grids it is blurry. Also, like you pointed out, the art in the book, while nice at its native resolution, doesn't capture everything that might be present in a location. Since I use layers in GIMP during play it is easier for me to make layers for things like secret doors and such if I do everything from scratch, rather than editing the existing art. It takes a while to make everything, but I have the time, and it gives me something to do while listening to podcasts or audiobooks.

Map of the Hellknight Vaults, as drawn by the Bumblebrashers. Crudely drawn (hurray for my lack of drawing ability), shows the layout of the parts of the vaults the Bumblebrashers as well as the room where they locked Big Bumble (The happy bear face), and the general location of "monsters" and "dead people" (as mentioned in the sidebar on page 33)

That's excellent, thanks for sharing. I will definitely be using this.

Here are my maps for Citadel Altaerein's first floor and its battlements. Included with the images is a GIMP file in the style which I use at my table. it has multiple layers for various secrets as well as for the fog of war (which I erase as my players explore). The fog of war is already set assuming that the PCs approach the citadel from the front. There are also layers for the skeletons and the graveshells. Enable that layer when they're defeated and they will disappear from the map (the rocks/corpse will disappear in the case of the graveshells).

These are great, thanks. A note about the Battlements map, you put in your fires as per the existing map, but according to the text, the north and east fires should be completely burned out, and the south and west three are just "fitfully" smoldering.
You're right, thanks for pointing that out. I usually check the text description against the map provided because there are always discrepancies, but it looks like I missed this one. I'll try to remember to fix it over the weekend.

When I hold session 0 for this adventure path I plan on giving a survey to each of my players so that I will have some adventure hooks for each of their characters. Once completed this will go into the character file that I keep for each of my PCs. I am sharing it here with all of you in case you may get some use out of it; even if you don't run Age of Ashes it is easily adapted to any campaign.

Here's the last map I'll be making for a while. I'm transitioning to a new map-making tool and will take some time to learn it before posting anything else. Since there is only one map left for me to map for Hellknight Hill (the last one) and I have yet to start my campaign, I have many weeks before I will need to create it for my group. Hopefully what I've posted so far helps out my fellow GMs and inspires others to share their own creations.

For the maps in this thread so far I used Illwinter's Floorplan Generator (along with all of the additional workshop content found on Steam). It's quite nice, especially since I only paid about $3 for it in a sale, but it does have its limitations. For one, it doesn't do angled walls at anything other than 45 degrees. It also doesn't do curved walls, hence my square towers in Citadel Altaerein. This lack of curves more than anything else is prompting me to switch to Dungeonfog. I'm not a big fan of its subscription model, but I tried out the free version and it does what I want. Dungeonfog is only a year or two old but seems to have had continual support since then. Here's hoping it works out for me, though of course if it doesn't I can always fall back to Illwinter's.

Just a quick question:
I contributed fairly heavily to the Jade Regent thread like this and I wanted to know if you guys had any interest in supplementary social encounters and social/setting vignettes? I appreciate the technical resources but I was curious if anyone would feel it is off topic to share other AP related materials? I want to avoid a hijack if I can!
Fumarole |
Feel free to share something if it fits with this Adventure Path, but if it is designed specifically for another one it is probably best shared in that subforum. I haven't checked every AP subforum but I imagine there is a community content thread for each of them. Even if there isn't you can certainly start one if you really want to get your content out there.

Thanks, just to clarify. I mean to share Age of Ashes content. I just was referencing what I had previously shared in similar threads for other AP's.

I'd love to see more stuff shared! Some other stuff I think it would be great to see from others:
- Breachill NPCs
- Small Breachill plots
- Some thoughts on how Breachill fits into Isger.
- Small encounters around town, outside of town, around the Citadel
I'm sure there is more, but let's work together to make this thing sing!

Thanks MSAbaddon! That looks like DungeonFOG. Any chance you'd share the map on DungeonFOG or drop a link to the DungeonFOG map here?
I'd like to clone it to make a few mods and use it as my VTT.
Sure, I published the map on DungeonFOG.
In addition, here the direct link.
Hope you like it, it's the first map I ever made.

I've already made a small encounter for the downtime while Huntersgate is being repaired, though it's tied to a character's backstory.
Basically, a farm run by a family of Erastil worshippers is being attacked on a nightly basis by wild animals, and the eldest son asks the party for help. His parents are openly hostile to the Asmodean Warpriestess in the party (and have tried to get her arrested by anonymously reporting her for devil worship after learning about her existence).
The one behind the attacks is a Horned Archon, an ancestor tasked with protecting the family, who wants to punish the family for abandoning their first child to the Sisters of the Golden Erinyes. Two guesses as to who this child is (she believes she's an orphan of the Goblinblood Wars), and two guesses as to why the Archon has only now decided to enact divine retribution.
I made this with the intention of shaking the Asmodean's faith and seeing whether she becomes more devout or begins leaning away from a faith she's followed her whole life.

Very cool! And it could be turned a number of ways with the intent to challenge any cleric and give the player a cool opportunity for character development!

Cheers! Since she's a Asmodean I've also decided to have her contacted by a Contract Devil in her dreams (I'm fluffing her as the Lady Accountant of the Clerical Contracts between the Women of Isger and His Dark Majesty), before heading off to Ravounel.
Though the players guide allows any religion, I'm sure that Asmodeus' anathema will cause some issues, so im having the devil stress that opposing the Scarlet Triad, who are operating illegally in Ravounel, is fine but reminding her that releasing their slaves would "Violate the terms of her Clerical Contract".
The player has already implied that she's somewhat naive in her faith due to her upbringing, so im sure they'd be okay with having this to deal with.

I am creating magic item cards for my players. These are standard poker size, simply print duplex (head to toe/short edge flip) and cut along the dotted lines. This file has six items from the first three books, more will be created and shared here as I create them.

I use a 40" TV on my table for combat encounters, and when using the existing art enlarged to 1" grids it is blurry. Also, like you pointed out, the art in the book, while nice at its native resolution, doesn't capture everything that might be present in a location.
I do this as well, but I use Fantasy Grounds, and I highly recommend it. You get the same artwork from the book, but at a much higher resolution. If you want to add more detail, you can add tokens to the map and customize to your liking. You also get to take advantage of the built in fog-of-war tools.
To pull this off I run two instances of the program, running the GM instance on my laptop's primary screen and join the player instance via "localhost", using the TV as a second monitor.
For this purpose, you only need the standard $40 license to get yourself started with the Fantasy Grounds application. If you already own the PDF of a PF book, you can get a discount on said PF book in the Fantasy Grounds store equal to the PDF's price (so only a few dollars for adventures). This also works in reverse; buying a Paizo product from Fantasy Grounds gets you a free PDF.

I wanted Voz to follow the same rules as a player would for her undead minions (taking an action to command them), and being appropriate level to have created a Skeletal Champion from the create undead ritual. This called for a level 7 build.
I originally intended to keep the same challenge of encounter (severe) but was thinking my players were going to be level 4 when they got here (but they weren't) so it ended up being extreme (without considering any extra adjustments for the minions).
I also gave her two skeletal champions as minions, instead of 1 and 1 skeleton guard.

My (level 3) party (flurry archer ranger + bear companion, dragon stance monk, thief melee rogue with the striking rune weapon in the party, and a buff/heal bard) got there with nearly full HP, expecting to face her (but not with any particular preprarations in mind), with a level 2 Alak alongside, and came pretty close to wiping. In the end, no one died, but played a little more aggressively or mixing up the spell selection a bit, this build is a party-killer.
Stoneskin and false life were up at the start of the fight (stoneskin neutralized the flurry archer's damage almost completely).
I had her prioritize using the minions to attack first to keep herself safe (worked well, even engaging at a chokepoint, up until they died). She did throw in a paralyze which held the rogue in the chokepoint with the skeletons early.
She used repeated castings of vampiric touch to regain temporary HP whenever she was out - I treated it as her "Plan A" whenever she didn't have temp HP, partly because it was thematic for a necromancer and partly because my players see an HP bar and it's super demoralizing to not feel like you're doing damage to a frickin' wizard. I did rule that she could only gain as much HP as the target could lose, so she spread those castings around instead of focus-firing on the weakened party members (which potentially would have been more effective for her but less fun for the party considering the difficulty). She got an extra 4th level vampiric touch from drain bonded item.
She used her third action for "shield" a lot, which due to her high level and therefore inflated AC, was actually pretty effective for avoiding hits.
Resilient sphere was used on the monk, and even with a successful save, he struggled to do enough damage to the sphere to beat its hardness to get to 10 HP so he was locked up for a few rounds. Had he failed the save, he probably would have been stuck there for the duration.
Fireball dropped 3 characters when it rolled around, even with pretty decent saves (except Alak, who crit failed), but it also finished off the resilient sphere, freeing the monk. It was a good example of the power of an AOE and basic saves.
Near the end, she tried to flee with mirror image up, but got hit (lucky roll on mirror) and then crit by the ranger+support bear with a knockdown to finish off her like 2 HP (in the group's excitement and adding in use of the crit cards, I forgot to roll for the mirror image).
All in all, it was a satisfying boss encounter. I'm curious how it would have played with the encounter as printed, but I feel like my version sold the flavor of a necromancer controlling the minions a little better.

I built maps for the jungle encounters that don't have a map on page 32 (I'm using the Swamp for A11, the ruined temple for A16, and the two clearings for A5 and A6). The grids are set at 70 pixels so they should fit perfectly in Roll20

I hadn't realised Roll20 would resize the images as they imported; for reference, the Riverside map is 30x18 tiles and the other ones are all 20x20. If you set the size of your maps appropriately, the images should snap correctly to the edges

I've got no art skills of my own, so I'm checking in here. Does anyone have a non-busted map of Altaerein? As in, walls repaired, junk cleared out, that my players can use to put together their homestead? I'd think it would be real cool. I'll just have to hand-draw something onto graph paper instead maybe, but I thought I'd look here.
