Rise of the Runelord - Thistletop - Re-Recruitment

Recruitment

I'm looking for two new players for my Rise of the Runelord PbP, the group is near the end of book 1, just having defeated warchief Ripnugget in Thistletop.

Posting rate is at roughly one post per days, excluding weekends.

If you're interested, please build a level 3 character with the following guidelines.

- 20-point buy for abilities or the following (21-point) array: 17, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Maximum ability score at character creation is 18 even after racial bonuses.
- Build your character with regular level 1 wealth using average starting gold for your class (the PCs are quite below the weath curve at this point, though they're about to start finding the cool stuff).
- The Background Skills optional rule from PF Unchained will be used.
- Characters start with two traits. One will be a campaign trait from the Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide, the other should be appropriate in the narrative.
- You can take a drawback for a third trait.
- Maximum hit points for level 1, half hit points+1 for subsequent levels.

You can find more info here, though a lot of time has passed since and I might have changed my opinion on some points.

What is the current party composition?

Dotting. Haven't played through Rise of the Runelords, got a rather clear character concept in mind, and would love to partake in another campaign :)

@patheticwretch: a melee (?) cleric, efreeti+gold dragon sorcerer and a siege-breaker fighter.

I'd rather start in a fresh campaign, but beggars cannot be choosers. :)

I'm certainly interested, as I've wanted to play in RotRL for a long time.
(BTW. Still reasonably new to this forum. I don't understand 'dotting'.)

I have a few concepts that I've been working on for a while that could work, or come up with something that might fit better.

- Human Evocation Occultist
- Half-orc Witch/Shifter (Green Giant; might already have enough green skins, though).
- Half-Elf Shield Fighter/Alchemical Sapper Alchemist
- Tengu Sword Saint Ronin Samurai
- Human Inquisitor of Torag (weilds a Large Warhammer).

I'd be interested in joining in on this. I built a Hunter since it looks like the existing group is missing a ranged character. If this is accepted, I'll figure out a name, make an alias, and build a little backstory around the Monster Hunter and Challenger traits. Probably something about tracking some monsters to Sandpoint.

Have an Oracle/Paladin I've been wanting to try. Crunch in the alias, excluding gear purchases.

Very general strokes of a background: Asura lives out in the wilds, she's friends with Shalelu and is a devout follower of Erastil, she's helped both Shalelu and the town in the past so she is accepted by some residents like Ameiko. She's a bit of an outcast because of her 'deformity' where her nose and mouth is almost canine. Otherwise she is very pretty and has entrancing eyes. She commonly wears a vale to cover her face. Maybe was captured by the goblins to explain why she hadn't been around Sandpoint and/or is already at Thistletop.

To note, I'm currently in a RotRL game that is still very early in. I'm also GMing one. In the past I've GMed through the end of book 2. So, I do have preexisting knowledge, but I know how to keep the IC and OOC separate. If you prefer new players or non-preexisting knowledge I completely understand.

Milgen here had gotten to the Ripnugget fight in the RoTL game, before things went sideways.

He's a third level Arcanist/Sorcerer. Basically, an electrically focused caster (1 level dip into elementalist so he can alter his spell types for free).

@PatheticWretch: Current party composition is a melee crusader sword and board cleric and a efreeti+gold dragon sorcerer, the half-orc fighter just died to a nasty encounter and his player is thinking about making a Barbarian.

@Asura Vanil: I have no problem with you knowing the AP's secrets as long as you're fine with sitting back and letting the other players figure things out by themselves from time to time.

...Wow, thanks for the interest everyone. I didn't expect this many people to be interested!

I'll close recruitment on tuesday 8/1 to give everyone a chance to flesh out their characters and for me and my players to select two players for the game. Best of luck, everyone!

Hi there

I'd very much like to play to!

I've played the start of RotRL about 10 years ago, but we ended it because of a TPK. Ever since, I've really wanted to finish it.
I honestly don't remember much and the little I do remember, I can easily separate from my in-character knowledge.

I'm new to PDP and while browsing the site, I saw your game a couple of days ago, noticing that you soon would be recruiting a couple of new players, so I have one ready for you here.

I also have an almost done concept for an aid-another halfling or a halfling hunter or ranger using a halfling slingstaff, so if one of those would be better, I can easily make them ready.
I'd be willing to play almost anything the party needs, I just want to play!

And now to the character. Pleas meet Normornigan Pewterson and his pet tiger, Cliff!

Normornigan Pewterson
Male halfling sorcerer (wildblooded) 3 (Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Magic 70)

—————

Background:

Hallo there, friends. You look tired and a little bit beat up! Come join me at my fire and have a mug of ale.

Sorry, I know, it’s not the best. Made it myself. My dad taught me, but I never got it quite right. Don’t have the patients for it, I guess. But it gets the job done! And I kind of like it.

By the way, my name is Normornigan Pewterson, but you can just call me Norm. I’m traveling the countryside to….

Who, him? That’s Cliff, my tiger. Found him as a cup when me and my family was traveling close to the Tapur Forest. He was all alone and I would leave him. My dad was like “you have to take care of him yourself and make sure he doesn’t eat the wagon or scare the horses….”bla bla bla, you know the speech. I did and he has been with me ever since. He is my best friend.

As I think I mentioned, my dad is a brewer and we used to travel all over Golarion, selling his wares. I never got good at it, but I loved the traveling. I have a really good ear for languages and everywhere we went, I tried to learn as much of the language as I could.

I picked up books everywhere we went and once I found a book in a language I didn’t know and no-one could tell me what the language was, until we came here, to Varisia. I meet an old woman that told me it was Thassilonian, the language of an old civilization that used to rule these lands. She pointed out a few ruins of theirs and that got me hooked. Since then I’ve been traveling the countryside, trying to find out as much as possible about them. They are really interesting! And there’s load of good stuff inside the ruins, if you know where to look!

How I survive out here all alone? Well I’m not alone, I got Cliff! And I have a trick or two, up my sleeve! Actually, since I found Cliff, I’ve been able to do a little magic. My mother always said he is fey-touched, seeing as I found him near the Tapur Forest. You there’s a lot a feys living in those woods, right? No? well, the stories I could tell! You wouldn’t sleep for a week! If you ever go there, well, just don’t go in to the forest itself.

Well, my mother thinks that since we have grown as close as we have, some of that fey-stuff has gotten in to me and that’s why I can do magic now. I don’t know, and I really don’t care. It made it possible for me to do what I like and travel on my own.

Where my family is at? Oh, I don’t know, somewhere, out there, brewing and selling. I hear from them from time to time, and that’s nice, but we just wanted different things out of life. My parents have my sister and brothers to help them, so they’ll be fine. And one day, I’ll probably find them and join up with them again, but for now, this is what I want to be doing.

Well, enough about me, tell me about you!

Goals:

Norms don't really have an end goal, but is just enjoying the ride. He wants to see as much as possible of the world and get to know as much as he can about other people, especially he likes to learn new languages.

He also wants to explore his magic, something he hasn't done much up till now. In a short while he'll learn about magical tattoos which will spark his interests and he'll take up tattooing. He will want to find a way to combine his magic and the tattoos (planning to take craft magical tattoos)

He'll focus a lot on Cliff, choosing spells that can help him fight better.

Appearance:

Norm is 26 years old, 3'3'' high (99 cm) and weighs 38 lbs (17 kg).
He has big curly brown hair and green blue eyes.
He normally has his pipe in his hand and if he is sitting down for more than 5 min, he will probably have his old beer-mug in hand, probably with his own homebrew.

Cliff is a big tiger. At 5 years, he is fully grown and is almost 13 feet long (about 4 meters) and weighs almost 700 lbs (a little over 300 kg).
He is the classic orange with black strips.

a little about me:
I'm 38 and from Denmark. I've been playing RPGs since I was 11 and PF for about 10 years. I have two small kids (2 and 4) which is making it hard for me to commit to sessions of 4-5+ hours in one sitting, so I started to look in to PBP, as I would be able to post at least daily and I miss playing PF (I'm in one group but we switched to 5e).

I will lend my Ax if you will have me

Dotting in :)

It means indicating your interest. Mostly because once you've posted in a thread it gets a dot by its name and will tell you how many new posts since you've last opened it. So people often turn up and

baggageboy wrote:

do that! Or simply post a . as the only thing in the post. (It also works if you delete the post afterwards so at the start of new game threads its common for everyone to post a single . and then immediately delete the post, just so that they're in there! :)

I'll do a build, an human aether kineticist who will be the party rogue and have some fairly impressive ranged fire power. Can I use Variant Multi-Classing (Rogue) to pick up trapfinding? It's a poor rogue that doesn't have that afterall! :)

Baggageboy here. I'd like to ask if this submission fits well enough. I can redo the background of you'd like. I put this character together as a Jade Reagent submission but didn't get to play it. The Campaign trait is from that campaign, but fits pretty well with ROTRL. I'll update to a different picture and level 3 when I get the chance.

Parry role out of combat would be knowledge and skills and he is a good backup face. In combat he'd buff and skirmish.

I was the Siege breaker fight, I died so I am in the process of making a new character. I can also make mine after the GM selects people and fill a roll or something else that is needed.

@Denlar Nulan - I don't know GM Wilken's stance on it, but personally I would think that you would have priority of choice, since you are an existing member of the game.

But that's just my 2cp. ;)

Fully agree with Blaydsong's statement Denlar. Make what you want.

Which I will leave up to the GM, just noting that I am willing to pay whatever if people are submitting ideas.

I like to be flexible, it will make me think of what to play.

Well then, might I suggest a character that wants to learn more about the god Torag and you only want to learn is form a Dwarven Paladin named Ironfoot, just saying. ;o)

Hey guys.

Just wanted to fine-tune my submission a bit, seeing as I popped in here originally with a mess of options.

After getting a better idea as to what the group currently has, I think that I'd be best suited to one of the following option:

Zelinda, the half-elven Fighter/Alchemist. I think she might be my best choice, both as a compliment to the fighting capabilities of the Slayer, and with the ability to boost the parties healing/buffing/blasting capabilities of the Alchemist. She specializes in the Longsword/shield combination, but will have a bow available for long range (especially when she can eventually attach bombs to her arrows). All around, I think she would suit the group well.

As an alternative, I think my Human Occultist (name pending) may be a good runner up. He can provide a little extra firepower with Evocation focus, and provides a decent amount of skills to the team. My only concern would be stepping on the toes of the existing sorcerer.

Let me know what you think.

@ Blaydsong: I should have the 'blasty' business (mostly) covered.

But, as a cross-blooded sorcerer, I have less spells known.
So my focus is the 'burn things to ash' department.

Having a bit more versatility in the arcane department wouldn't hurt, therefore.
Like an Arcanist, Wizard, Bard, Skald, Occultist, or Alchemist.

Heh... For sure.

Honestly, the Fighter is more designed for the front line, but the Alchemist is to help suppliment her ranged attacks, as needed, not to mention the potions/extracts to help as needed.

I like to build characters that have options. :)

Also, something I was just thinking of.

Since new players will not be taking part in the Festival, is taking a Campaign trait still a requirement?

Finally got around to putting up a proper character sheet.

Will wait for instructions before increasing the level.

@ Bladysong (a.k.a. Zelinda):

I like having options with my characters too.

Which is one reason I like Crossblooded sorcerers (despite some players thinking it's horrid).

The lack of spells and the WILL penalty are drawbacks, no doubt of it.

But, to me, having two arcana and choices between two sets of bloodline powers, feats and spells is nice.

A question and a clarification:

Isn't it possible to get notifications when a new post is made in a thread? Can't seem to find that function and it seems pretty essential, in a PDP forum....

I also mention it in my character submission, but even though Norm is a sorcerer, he is very focused on Cliff, making Cliff a really good frontliner.
Here at lvl 3, he's at 16 HP with a 26 AC (with shield and mage armor on) and have 3 attacks at +3 or +7, depending on if I choose power attack or weapons finesse.

It takes quite a bit of tinkering to get notifications through, say, an RSS feed. The easiest way to keep up with threads, in my opinion, is to simply bookmark them with &page=last added to the end of the URL.

So yes, I got a bookmark folder with the campaigns I'm active in and I just open all of 'em at once to see if any of them have anything new. I doubt that's the most elegant solution, but that's how I do it xD

Also, if you go to the recruitment page you should see little dots next threads you've posted in that have new comments.

Solicitor wrote:

If you go to the Campaign tab (linked to yours there) of your profile it will show all the games you are playing in and will show the number of new posts in each game since you last looked. That may be easier than having bookmarks for each one, just FYI. I just keep that tab open in a browser and F5 it when I want to check for new posts.

Also, since there has been quite a bit more interest since I first posted I'm going to withdraw to give someone new to the AP a shot.

@Garbund

I'll be honest, I've never really looked at the Cross-blooded all that closely. Looking forward to seeing what it can do. :)

Ok updates are done. I left the campaign trait as sibling(Amiko) because it does tie well into the campaign and it simply gives a +1 to will which is similar to others the campaign does offer, but I didn't want to redo his background. I can redo it If that is required, but I didn't hear one way or another. Thank you for the consideration :)

Yes, Variant Multiclassing is fine.

I only had time to give it a cursory look for now but everything seems fine as is.

I would say just build what you want to play, wait to see how the party will shape up, and then make tweaks to your character if you feel its needed.

Blaydsong wrote:

Whoops, you're right, you don't need to pick a campaign trait if you don't want to, since many of them are related to the festival.

Zelinda wrote:

Seems good. I would like you to level up to lvl 3 if possible, but more important than that, I would really like for you to write some background and personality traits for your character, doesn't need to be gigantic or super detailed.

Thank you for your consideration, I hope your current games go well :)

Ok. I added one anyways that I thought would fit the character. It's the 'Friends and Enemies' trait, which provides her with a horse and tack, as well as a contact in Daviren Hosk. Could also give her a reason to help out, when she finds out that her family friend's town is being threatened.

Finally got around to putting up a proper character sheet.

Will wait for instructions before increasing the level.

Seems good. I would like you to level up to lvl 3 if possible, but more important than that, I would really like for you to write some background and personality traits for your character, doesn't need to be gigantic or super detailed.

I can certainly do that. Going to double-check when I get home, but I think the final tally for level 3 will be Fighter 2/Alchemist 1.

I'll also work on the background and such when I get home. This was originally just a concept build at first, but now I'll have to put a little more thought into who she is and why she's in involved.

At a glance, she is most likely from a Varisian family who has a long history of adventurers and (in some cases) trouble makers. She would be wanting to follow in the footsteps of her recently deceased uncle(?), who always regaled her with stories of adventure, daring and excitement. And what better way to do this than by going to see a good family friend who still remembers the good that was done.

I only had time to give it a cursory look for now but everything seems fine as is.

Sounds good. If anything does seem out of place when you get a chance to look closer just let me know :)

Sorry wrong alius, I'm not sure how that happened.

Ok. I've updated the character sheet, including adding her horse, Uma. I've also added a background story and personality section. Only thing left is to add a tagline. (EDIT: Tagline done, for now)

Let me know what you think.

You missed Milgen here.

Character sheet is linked in the profile (under his HP).

But I'll reproduce it here since it got missed the first time

So, registration closes at the end of the day today?

Good luck everyone. Here's to good games and great adventures. :)

I believe so.

And good luck to you too :-)

I know the feeling, I've been checking this thread constantly all day (it's 6:45 pm where I am)

Currently evaluating submissions, should have my two choices by the end of the day. Thanks everyone for applying.

Wowee. That's getting to be much later than here. Where are you located, if you don't mind my asking?

I have to second (third?) the feeling :) Hoping to make the cut, I was recently in an in person campaign that fell apart right after this fight. I'd love to play through the rest.

<crosses fingers>

Thanks Wilken. It's been a good experience, so far, regardless. :)

Once again, thanks everyone for putting in the time and effort to make characters for this game. This decision was pretty hard to make and I ended up doing my usual thing and taking one more person than I originally intended while still wishing I could run multiple tables for everyone.

That said, the following people please report to the discussion thread:

Caeldren Shoreman Kaijitsu
Normornigan Pewterson
Zelinda Petri

To everyone else, thank you again for your efforts and I hope you can find a good RotRL table to play in the future.

Y'all have fun.

Congrats to those who got in.
