Background:
Caeldren Shoreman, or Cael as most people know him, was born and raised in Sandpoint by his mother Vasenra Shoreman. Born out of wedlock Vasendra refused to tell Cael who his father was for fear of retribution until on her deathbed she confessed that Lonjiku was Cael's sire. Cael was devastated. He'd always entertained the hope that one day his father would return to save himself and his mother from their life of poverty. The knowledge that the bitter old Lonjiku was his father and the passing of his mother was too much for the otherwise optimistic young man. Cael went through his mother's meager belongings finding a letter from Lonjiku threatening her and her child if she ever revealed their tryst. Cael kept the letter to remind himself of the care his mother had had for him. Leaving his home behind Cael took the first job he could find as a caravan guard and left Sandpoint.
Working as a caravan guard was a formative experience for Cael. He quickly found his friendly nature to be a two edged sword. On one hand he and no shortage of "friends" and his habit of helping out made his bosses quick to hire him back on. Cael was eager to hear their tales of exotic wonders and far away lands. Cael even learned to spin a tale or two of his own. Mostly he just retold the stories he'd heard from others but on a grander scale with some... artistic liberties. However often it was those same "friends" would take advantage of him, leaving him in more than one tight situation. The latest example of how Cael's trusting nature and general lack of foresight get's him in to trouble happened in Maginmar. Just a few months ago. A man named Francois had been hired on in as another guard in Riddleport and quickly took Cael under his wing. Francois praised Cael's quick hands and began teaching him the finer points of fencing. The entire journey from Riddleport to Magnimar the fenced in their off time and Cael quickly became quite good. Once they arrived at Magnimar Francois asked Cael to deliver a package for him. Cael was only to happy to do so. He followed the instructions Francois had given him to a bar in the Shadow district. Oblivious to the danger he was in, Cael asked for the proprietor of the establishment. When a burly man said that he owned the bar Cael gave him the heavy package and began to leave. Just as Cael was about to step out the door the man yelled, "hey, what kind of fool do you take me for?!" and began advancing with a cudgel in hand, a look of fury on his face. "I have no idea what you're talking about," stammered Cael as he began backing out the door. "I'll not be paid in gold-plated lead, if Francois can't pay his debt you'll be paying it for him!" The man made a swing for for Cael's head which he barely dodged. Cael ran, he ran as he'd never run before, the man's cries goading him on. "I'll find you! and when I do you'll be sorry!" When Cael got back to the caravan he found Francois had gone. Afraid he might be found Cael collected his wage and left the caravan traveling as quickly as he could back to the only place he'd ever called home. Upon arrival in Sandpoint, Cael found that the many of his friends had moved away and the hut he'd lived in with his mother occupied. Having few options he took a room at the Rusty Dragon which he found out was now owned by his half sister Ameiko. While Cael had had little to do with the Kaijitsu's he'd known Ameiko to be little like their father. After a few days of staying in the inn, during which time Cael observed his sister, pulled Ameiko aside and told her of their shared blood. At first Ameiko was skeptical, but when Cael showed her the letter he'd found from their father she was convinced. Since then Ameiko has kept Cael on as a hand helping around the inn. She's been helping Cael refine his story telling though his total lack of musical ability has prevented her from teaching him much more of the bard's craft. Cael's enjoyed the couple of months he's spent in the inn spinning tales and helping out. But he yearns to be on the road again and wants to have an adventure of his own, not just retell those he's heard. Also driving him to leave is the gnawing worry that Sandpoint really isn't that far away from Magnimar and the man who swore to get him. Appearance:
Carl has a decidedly average appearance. Dressed in rough but serviceable clothing, he is of average height with dark brown hair cropped short and usually sports a few days stubble. His quick smile and ready laugh make people feel comfortable around him almost immediately. He wears a rapier at is side as well as a cudgel and walks with an uncanny amount of grace. General Build Outline and Tactics/Party Role:
This outline may change as we play, but this is the general overview as it is planned. 1: Inspired Swashbuckler; as outlined above
Spells will be focused on versatility, taking the human FCB for bonus spells known every level beyond first. Controled Inspired Rage lets me pick what stats to boost and does not limit skills or give an AC penalty. I plan to give the bonus to Dex each time. For Cael and other dex based fighters this is a bonus to hit and damage as well as reflex save and sometimes AC. For casters and strength based front liners this should be a bonus to reflex and AC. Most combat I plan to try to fire up the "song" flavored as encouraging quips and story bits and then skirmish a bit, using spells as they make sense with mostly a focus on buffs and control spells. Outside of combat Cael should be able to help assist with most skill checks (I believe there is going to be a fairly large party so specialists will handle most checks directly) as well as providing a solid if unspecialized knowledge base. UMD may or my not be a focus depending on if anyone else specializes in that skill. Scroll scribing may become a common passtime depending on how the GM feels about spell kenning to create scrolls, but that wouldn't be for a while. Alternate Background (Scrapped):
Crunch note: If Cael is accepted using this background his fort save will increase 1 and his will save decrease by 1. Crunch otherwise remains the same. Caeldren Shoreman, or Cael as most people know him, was born and raised in Sandpoint by his mother Vasenra Shoreman. Born out of wedlock Vasendra refused to tell Cael who his father was for fear of retribution until on her deathbed she confessed that Jubrayl was Cael's sire. Cael was devastated. He'd always entertained the hope that one day his father would return to save himself and his mother from their life of poverty. The knowledge that the slimy scheming Jubrayl was his father and the passing of his mother was too much for the otherwise optimistic young man. Though he was ashamed of who his father was, Cael did know that Sandru was a much better man than his brother and had admired him. With his mother's death leaving him with few options Cael decided he would see if Sandru would give him a job as a caravan guard even though he was young. Cael was lucky to have an understanding uncle, and Sandru took him on and kept an eye on him during his first long haul. After his first Cael got an opportunity to take another job that paid better than what Sandru would offer. Despite his uncle's warnings Cael took the job. He ended up getting cheated on his pay in the end, and being further afield than he'd intended. By the time Cael had made it back to Sandpoint Sandru was away on another journey and Cael didn't have coin to wait for him to get back. So he took another job and was away when Sandru returned. So it has gone for the pased few years with teh two exhanging letters occasionaly, but not able to spen much time together since that first journey during which Sandru taught his nephew. While Cael had had little to do with the Kaijitsu's he'd known Ameiko to be a kind an talented woman. After a few days of staying in the inn, during which time Cael observed Amieko closer, Cael pulled Ameiko aside and told her of how he was Sandru's Nephew. At first Ameiko was skeptical as Sandru hadn't ever mentioned him, but after explaining to her that Cael had asked Sandru not to talk about Cael's parentage to anyone because of the shame of it Amieko was convinced. Though he was loath to accept charity Cael also asked if he could earn a room and board at the inn while lying low and waiting for Sandru's return. Since then Ameiko has kept Cael on as a hand helping around the inn.
