I don't think it would have insulted ANYONE if Supergirl won. I just think it's insulting to think Superman isn't as strong. :P

Does anyone else think that guy that keeps appearing in the end of the episodes looks like Metron? Metron

Both of those things happening in the same week stretches coincidence a little far.

Any TV show, if it runs long enough, will have one character, even if it's only a guest star, who hates/fears clowns. Pretty sure it's a bylaw of the Writers Guild of America.

Even in a comic-based series, not every clown reference points to the Joker. If someone in a Marvel TV series says "I hate lawyers", do you automatically jump to "Ooooh, Daredevil reference!" (Or She-Hulk, take your pick.)

An unrelated rule of TV screenwriting: When referencing pizza, you may only name one of two ingredients: pepperoni (97%) or anchovies (3%). All other pizza toppings are taboo and Shall Not Be Named.

I totally agree with Mick, clowns are terrifying. I was just 6 years old when my cousin and I landed on Steven King's It while channel flipping. The clown popped out of the shower drain and I ran out of the room screaming my head off.

Yeah I thought metron too.

They haven't actually said who it is yet. It might actually be Metron and not the Thinker. It's TV, anything's possible.

Anything is possible. I just thought New Gods wouldn't be one of them. The Legion sure.

Also for pizza toppings, extra cheese is allowed.

Encouraged

Encouraged fine. I also think mushrooms (especially portabellos) are allowed too.

Back in the Silver Age, she was supposed to be stronger, because she was older, or some such strangeness. (That doesn't seem to work with humans, unless one of them is an adult, and the other one is a toddler...)

*I* preferred the logic that a lifetime of exposure to yellow sun radiation would have made Kal stronger, than Miss-I-just-got-here, but that logic's been thrown out the window every time someone pops out of the Phantom Zone (or bottle city of Kandor or whatever) and is exposed to yellow sunlight for the first time, and in like, an hour, tops, is right up there equal to Kal. So, whatever!

Anywho, Flash stuff. Is Barry ever *not* going to run up at super-speed, stop right in front of the villain, announce his presence and then stand really still and take it right in the face like a pro?

I mean, really. Would it kill you to dodge? Ever? And while I get it's not very heroic, could you maybe offer than a chance to surrender *after* smacking them a couple dozen times before they know you're even in the same zip code? If you don't want to smack them, just run by them at the speed of sound and clap your hands a lot. The shockwaves will send them arse over teakettle, and if you do it while running around them, they'll get round-robined from one shockwave to the next, and it'll look totally funny.

Ugh. Speedsters. Writers just don't know how to write them or challenge them, so they end up just holding onto the world's biggest idiot ball.

(Not that Kara doesn't do the same thing. Fly in at mach fiddy-bajillion, then land and put your hands on your hips and say something authoritarian and then get blasted because you brought bluster and dramatic posing to a super-fight, while the other person brought super-powers and a special little something I like to call 'an ounce of brains.')

I'd be a terrible super-hero, obviously, 'cause I totally support Oliver's 'heroic' notion of starting combat from the shadows, shooting some idiot in the leg instead of popping up in front of the bad-guy and saying 'hi, please show me your most effective attack by shooting me with it!'

2 people marked this as a favorite.

*possibly some spoilers*

Yeah I have to agree with that set. Especially for flash. Now in kara's defense I'm sure their is a lot of villains that just lay their guns down after taking a few shots realizing its pointless and give up. They are just off-screen I would imagine. She did try and sneak attack the psychic but you know mind reading. Although I would argue even if you know shes gonna do it I don't think you could react in time. (she did the sneak attack with heat vision too? like WTF you just gonna melt her head?)

Barry should start every fight by going in dismantling every gun bomb etc followed by putting a pool of grease at his enemies feet and tieing their shoe laces together. Then being like Surrender now!

You'd be a successful superhero

Well, the normal criminals (Ones without special weapons or superpowers) would probably lay the guns down if they see Supergirl coming their way. They know she's bulletproof and can kill them just by poking them with her finger.

Extra cheese on the pizza for me, please! And nothing else. I don't mind sausage sometimes, but that's it.

Heather, Italian or just regular sausage?

As for Barry's problems, I think the fact he wants the villains to know who beat them instead of just "WTF?" as they get tossed into jail...might factor into it. I could be wrong.

Thomas Seitz wrote:

Citation? I'd have bet that neither extra cheese nor any form of mushrooms has ever been mentioned within a TV show.

I dunno about TV show, but real life yes. :)

So barry finally did what I've been waiting for. dismantling a car while its running! I think hes officially fast now. Now if he would just stop being dumb.

As a speedster I'd still be inclined to carry a blade......that and I'd spend a lot of time studying the vibrational frequencies of solid objects....cause...science.

To be fair, they do that in the comics and when the show gets even close to the Flash madness that happens in the comics people start getting headaches.

Honestly if you can move at those speeds you don't need a knife really you could karate chop someone in half. I think making things explode is an option the flash know of and chooses not to do.

Yup. Love the dismantling the car around the guy though.

My favorite moment this season, honestly, is Wally in episode one:

"I know things."

Giving Wally skills like being multilingual and having a deeper intellectual depth than he's been shown as having in previous seasons makes me happy. He deserves to be just as fleshed out as all the rest of the crew, and it's about time it happened.

Thomas Seitz wrote:

Oh, well, sure. IRL I like Italian sausage with mushrooms. Or a 3- or 4-meat pizza with or without mushrooms. And sometimes extra cheese.

But my initial [off topic] mention of pizza was about what the Writers Guild seems to allow -- or not allow -- as part of TV scripts.

Yeah I enjoyed that too. Also realized Wally and Cisco and now fellow LDR buddies, dating someone from another earth.

It's a fine line between drama and melodrama.

When you can't have a happy ending because your dad's in jail and breaking him out would be reasonably problematic, drama.

When you can't have a happy ending because your dad's been cleared and he needs to stay away because... reasons. Like, you still need to be dark and tortured and bothered by something, thats melodrama.

Blades only for extreme targets. Flicking a penny at someone at the speed of sound is way more lethal than needed, so all a Flash would need to do is carry some spare change.

But really, for non-lethal effects, a 'run-by' should create enough of a displaced air/shockwave to scatter people like bowling pins and leave them disoriented and (hopefully temporarily!) deaf. A super-sonic handclap next to them could easily kill someone, and more distant or reserved effects (like a finger snap) could be more of a stunning attack.

Without ever touching someone (which, if he's not invulnerable, would be a terrible idea, since he'd shatter every bone in his hand and arm!), a speedster capable of moving at super-sonic speeds could wipe out a group of armed men easily, before they even knew he was in the same city.

And that's not even dealing with funky stuff like spinning his arms and making little tornadoes...

Him having so many *easy* ways of dealing with the stuff that he allows to smack him around every episode, ways that he's used in the past of the same show (and may use at the end of the episode, and then magically forget in time for beginning of the next episode), just makes Barry look like an idiot.

I think the speed force is specifically written and themed so that it fixes all the problems that would unintentionally occur from his speed such as breaking his own hand or accidentally igniting the atmosphere thus ending all life on earth. However that has been splotchy over the years and doesn't always seem to be true.

True. He's supposedly surrounded by a 'speed force field' that prevents him from generating too much friction or bursting into flames or the mass of air displaced in front of him compressing into something as impossible to run through as a brick wall, and yet, when he *wants* to generate wind by spinning his arms, or running in a circle to create a counter-tornado, suddenly that speed force anti-friction thingie turns off and lets him affect the air (and yet still not burst into flames?).

It's all terribly convenient. Much like Captain America's shield being able to absorb impact so that bullets drops to the ground after hitting it, or the force of Thor's hammer or Iron Man's repulsors don't resonate through it and shatter him like glass, and yet can inexplicably bounce off walls, or be used to reflect attacks when he wants it to. :)

Eh, the horrible abusive relationship between super-heroes and science. We just tune in for the drama and thrown dishes.

Yeah That always perplexed me. I was like well does it absorb and negate energy or does it amplify it like vibranium is suppose to allow for the throws.

Spider-Man said it best in Civil War, "That thing doesn't obey the laws of physics at all!"

The force of Thor's hammer has shattered planets, thank you, Set.

I dunno about the shield and physics but I always thought there was some modicum of physics to Mjolnir.

Oh god I am laughing so much at

Spoiler:
Joe's face when Cecile tells him she is pregnant

It is so priceless

Scarab Sages

Indeed. The look on his face was priceless.

Overall, I am increasingly optimistic about this season.

Spoiler:
A non-speedster villain. Huzzah! And I'm intrigued by his plot. Manipulate Team Kid Flash into releasing Barry and inadvertently creating more metas, but for what reason? I can see how some people are saying he could be Metron, but according to IMDB and Wikipedia he is indeed the Thinker.

Loved the nod to the original Wally West with the mention of Blue Valley.

I also like that Barry was being very positve and full of faith, when everyone else was crying about bad luck and curses.

12 new metas created on the bus. Two are now incarcerated. I look forward to seeing what other new metas we get. It looks like maybe not all of them will be villains, since next week we get Ralph Dibney/Elongated Man. I also hope they continue to bring back some of the classics (Grodd, maybe Abracadabra).

Lastly - Danny Trejo! Woot! I think he's going to be playing Gypsy's father.

Piper just has sound waves. Not actual powers.

In any case, I'll miss Wally, but not like he won't ever be around again.

Yeah, that's the beauty of speedsters. Superman, GL, and the Flashes are pretty much the only JLA members I can legitimately buy getting a phone call then being on the other side of world in time to help.

Wally could still be a regular member of the team if he wanted and just commute from his new town... nobody would even know.

Phantom,

GL has it tough because he's got more than just Earth to look after, even with 6 Humans.

Meh... they have it easy it now. It used to be ONE GL per sector for millions of years... 6?? should be a cakewalk now :P

But that wasn't my point. There's always an excuse why GL or Superman were too busy to answer a JLA summons... but when they DO show up, it's because they have the powers that can get them there in the nick of time.

If Flash or Wonder Woman send out a call because a missle is on it's way here... Batman and Aquaman should arrive to help somewhere between 3-4 hours or 2-3 days laters depending on where the emergency is. Batman has jets... but even swimming at the speed of a Shark or a torpedo from atlantis.... Aquaman just can't get there...

Flash? GL? Yeah, you need them... Speed of light BAM! they're there!

Fair point, Phantom.

Ok I'm liking what they did with Ralph. Sure he's a little different than I'm used to seeing him but I kind of like the snark.

Flash needs someone with snark and HG is being a little mellow this time around.

Most of all under the snark you can see the good guy he really is.

plus damn, great choice of actor

(love the Plastic Man jock at the end)

Grey,

It's better than what they did with few of Supergirl's rogues. (Looks at Cyborg Superman.)

I didn't care for the interpretation of Dibny, but perhaps he'll grow on me.

Damon Griffin wrote:

I think the main reason for the change to his personality is probably to play off Barry with a bit more contrast

Lets face it, the Real Ralph is frankly a lot like Barry. very squeaky clean nice guy

CW Ralph, you can see the nice guy in there, but it's got this layer of cynicism and hard luck over top of it right now that needs to be chipped away.

He made a mistake and it screwed up his life, even he knows it deep down, now he's got a chance to get back on the right track and he's taking it.

He reminded me of Dirk Gently.

Sovereign Court

And that chin. Oh that chin.

He reminds me of a young Jim Carrey.... or Darren on Bewitched. Either of them :P

All in a good way :)

I think he's designed to be a cross between Elongated Man (Ralph Dibney, whitebread detective) and Plastic Man (Patrick O'Brian, ex-criminial on a redemption arc), particularly as they use Dibney's identity with O'Brian's hero name.
