Thinking on it further, we have already illustrated some consistency with the River Freedoms:

Say What You Will, I Live Free: as previously illustrated, TSV makes no attempt to stifle the opinions of others, especially its members, even where they differ from the "official stance". It has been suggested by some that this makes identifying an official stance or point of contact difficult, but anyone with questions is welcome to contact us for clarification.

Oathbreakers Die: We have already discussed working this into an "Oath ceremony" for joining TSV...but, we do not intend to bind people unnecessarily. Personally, this has also suggests to me that breaking a contract should come with the same threat of violence and bounty as other forms of PvP. Maybe even making oath-breakers an alternate target for assassin contracts.

Walk Any Road, Float Any River: We will not restrict the peaceful movement of others without justification, we do not intend to be NBSI. This freedom also suggests to me we should have a general disapproval of SAD tactics in lands under our control...and I am of the opinion that we do not condone such tactics in general.

Courts Are For Kings: All members of TSV are bound by a charter called the Caerux. However, we feel no need to dictate the behaviour or decision of other settlements/nations except in the rare cases in which their choices impact our members negatively (in which case we will open negotiations). While we will not be NBSI, we will expect those in our lands to act as our laws dictate, primarily those promoting GW vision of "positive game play". Violators will be met with force.

Slavery is an Abomination: This goes without clarification. We do not recognize claims of ownership of sentient beings.

You Have What You Hold: To us, this means that the rules we set apply only where we can enforce them; other settlements are free to sponsor companies that extort everyone in their area who doesn't join up, but nobody is allowed to do that on our turf, including us (quoted from Decius).

Finally, I want to reiterate that all of these positions are preliminary and based upon the intersection of my current understanding of TSV's zeitgeist and the game mechanics. It is all subject to change and debate, even among members of TSV. Our positions will become more clear as the we learn more information about the game.

Would be cooler if we didn't.

New character motivation concept: Freedom Fighter for Sentient Items. This brave soul has set out to cast off the tyrannical shackles of any who would claim to *own* a free-thinking item, be it a magic sword with a hate-on for orcs or an enchanted pillow that sings lullabies.

This character would fit in well in TSV, I would think.

How can you "free" a sentient item though? they are always imprisoned by their form, unless you could teach it how to cast animate object on itself. Also, some sentient items have a tendency to enslave the person who is using them, and would have no desire to be "freed" from it's mobile meat puppet. :)

You are thinking about it too hard. But I can indulge.

Option 1) The character seeks to retrieve such items from those who abuse them and place them with new "cooperative partners" such as the relationship becomes a symbiosis instead of a one-sided affair.

Option 2) The character dumped their intelligence. They have a mission, but have not thought very hard about the consequences. Any attempts to reason through their logical failings will simply lead to confusion and dismissal on the grounds that you are trying to trick them.

Don't forget freeing humanoids from the clutches of dominant sentient items.

Eh... darn. I missed what was typed. Though I don't understand the reason why someone would type something bad with the current talk. Seems to be reasonable to me at the moment.

Oh well....

Note: Don't tell me. Wouldn't want others to get in trouble.

Does this mean no owning dogs/cats too? They're sentient beings.

Pets and Slavery are two different things.

Slaves are treated as property and usually very poorly.
Pets are often viewed as members of the family and are usually treated very well. Often better than other family members.

The argument that animals such as cats and dogs are sentient is still debated today by scientists. For the record, I'm on the side that says they are sentient beings.

I was mostly joking. But for anyone who's ever owned a dog, you know that's a pretty ridiculous argument.

Beings which are capable of expressing their consent or lack thereof are treated differently than beings which are not. Near as I can tell, my dogs are very happy to live with me and let me give them food and shelter.

Sentient and sapient are two important distinctions.

And I need to go on record as strongly defending the claims of ownership of felines. Anyone claimed by one will understand.

lol.. growing up I had a cat named Tiger. When she would lay in my lap, she would not let any other female near me. If my mother set down next to me. She would swipe at her then if my mother didn't move, she would swipe again but with her claws extended.

If they weren't happy they would express it and you would know it. Kind of hard to misinterpret a hard bite. Pretty much means they aren't happy about something/someone.

I'm quite sure dogs (at least the one I own and those my friends have) can perceive and feel based on my own personal experiences and from those of others I know. Course not every human can perceive those instances in their pets.

Anyone who thinks dogs aren't sentient needs to first read the definition of the word and then read this story.

Just saying a quick hi to my fellow T7Vers. Tied up at work with somebody else's workload (ain't that always the case). Hope to be back soon.

I was wondering where you went. Glad to hear it's just mundane stuff. BTW, we've cancelled Thusday's chat :-)

Good thing you're in The Seventh Veil :)

I was actually very meticulous when choosing T7V. I read through a lot of post and visited the T7V website frequently. Then when it was time to apply, I still dragged my feet for couple of weeks before I finally took the step and put in my application as I continued to go over things in my head.

*I have a tendency to argue/debate with myself quite a lot. :P

But I believed and still do that T7V will be the right fit for me. Like minded individuals that I'm sure I will enjoy playing alongside with.

Just a reminder that we're still alive and kicking and we're always looking for more folks who are interested in High Reputation play with a focus on Knowledge acquisition and dissemination. We have a couple of different Pathfinder RPG games going and a lot of smart, funny, interesting people.

The Seventh Veil was born on these forums and is focused almost exclusively on Pathfinder and Pathfinder Online. Our announcement on these forums is the oldest of any of the active guilds, and we have a strong alliance and good working relationship with The Empyrean Order, whose announcement came right after ours.

If you're interested, I hope you'll fill out a Member Application.

I actually started posting this elsewhere...changed my mind, then decided to leave it here:

Quote:

The Seventh Veil does not have a specific focus, and we currently intent to be TN (if allowed). We have a organic modular design - that changes based upon the intersection of the needs and interests of our community - specifically, we encourage members to create sub-communities with a focus of interest (of their choosing). These sub-communities are encouraged to develop their own identity (with the TSV RP philosophy of searching for knowledge and OOC philosophy of building the greater community kept in mind) and are granted autonomy within the bounds of our community ROE. TSV will also keep a list of "needs of the community" which these subgroups are encouraged to volunteer to fulfill. Those subgroups who do volunteer to fulfill a duty are granted an equal seat at the governing council.

Point being, anyone can pursue their own interests and even experience community building with the backing of the greater collective. Everyone is encouraged to lead/build a group focused upon how they want to play and contribute knowledge and experience gained from that to the collective.

Alternately, we intend to be part of a TN settlement (again, if allowed), tentatively called Phaeros, and we are looking for partners who intend to promote the higher end of the reputation system to help us build a community we can all be proud to be loyal to (as opposed to being forced to be loyal/subservient to TSV).

At the moment, we have made the active decision to wait until closer to EE to play more of our hand. We will however, entertain discussion and questions from those who might be interested in playing with us.

Thanks Skwiziks! It's nice to finally have formally joined instead of lurking until EE. I remember when TSV formed and I had planned on getting in shortly after that but just waited over a year.

How the hell does one find one's avatar again? I know I sorted for "least used" when I made my selection, but now the "sort by usage" seems inconsistent, as if it resorts every time I turn a page.

Hi Kaira, nice to see new applicants to T7V

(And hello again, everyone. Remember me? Exam period at the uni is finally over and ridiculous amounts of marking have just about been completed - I'll be back to bother you - and everyone else - again before you know it.)

No worries, Lhan. I actually have you in the list of T7V members who are "fairly active" on these forums :)

Hi all. Just discovered this thread and really like the feel of The Seventh Veil as a company from what I've read here and on the Khaiognos site. I've been a very silent Kickstarter supporter, but with EE now so close, I've decided its time to start thinking about actually playing - especially since my background is with tabletop rather than mmorpg.

cheers,
Hunter

I'm looking forward to the work of going through many new applicants as we approach the start of EE.

Thanks for the kind words StormHunter. I think The Seventh Veil is a very interesting community because of the diverse backgrounds of its members. I hope we can prove that you don't have to be ruthless to be successful :-)
