I know some Hellknight orders are extinct, is there a general reason for those orders no longer existing? In other words is it all of them basically getting wiped out during Thrune's reformation, or do they have more varied reasons?

We'll see. Turns out, we tend to prefer to have monsters play to their strengths when taking class levels.

Succubi Oracles, cursed with awesome (kinda)? (in the same idea as the Harpy Oracle in Jade Regent)

Succubi Ninja?

Pretty much any class combo is potentially interesting for any creature, frankly... it all depends on how well you write up the creature's personality and description, in my opinion, when determining if it's a cool idea or not.

I brought up Oracles and their Curses because they can weaken or Nullify a creature special abilities, or twist them (special abilities like Energy Drain), does it make more sense?

Hello, I've some questions about witches. I'm not getting much feedback in the rules forum, so I'll just ask how you would handle it as a GM.

The section on one familiar teaching spells to another in the APG says "If a familiar belongs to a witch that has died, it only retains its knowledge of spells for 24 hours, during which time it is possible to coerce or bribe the familiar into teaching its spells to another, subject to GM discretion."

1)What if the witch is raised after 24 hours, do the spells come back? I'd think so RAI, but RAW it is unclear.
2)Does the familiar lose its Int and special abilities after 24 hours as well? What about if it is dismissed, does it revert to a nonsapient animal if it was one originally?
3)Does the familiar retain its spells known if it is the one that dies and is brought back?

4) Regarding the Synergist witch archetype from the Familiar Folio, what happens if the witch dies while merged with her familiar? Do they both die and stay merged, separate and both die, or separate but the familiar still lives? If they stay merged, can they be raised with a single spell?

No general reason. Each has their own story and reason why they went away.

These are great questions... but they should go into the rules forum so that they can be FAQed.

In the future are you okay with this or are you not all that interested in Collector edition stuff?

Thanks for the heads up. I bought the Pip Boy edition more or less the day it was announced though, so I was part of the reason why it sold out.

I quite like collector edition stuff, actually, for 2 reasons.

1) I enjoy collecting things that are neat.

2) I enjoy giving more money than normal to companies who deserve it. In a way, I like to think of buying a collector's edition of a game as leaving a tip to the creators, I guess... even though I'm pretty sure that there's not a big profit margin on collector editions.

Not really...

Mute Curse, deprive an Harpy of her Captivating Song.

A 'similar' curse could affect a Succubus' Energy Drain, which, in turn, could make infiltration easier or harder, depending on the situations.

Does it make more sense now?

Ah, hehe :3.

1) Okies, I'll keep an eye out for stuff then.

2) Interesting, though I'm not surprised since that was one of the reasons I splurged for the Deluxe Collector's Edition of RotR, that and because I trust Paizo.

It does. Assumign the question is:

"Do some oracle curses deprive monsters of their abilities?"

The answer is yes. You can build unusual monsters in this way that help to soften thier strengths; that's the reason why I gave the harpy in that adventure that new curse—to make her less dangerous to a lower level party while simultaneously giving her some more interesting and unique flavor than just a harpy. In this case, giving a harpy any class levels makes her too tough for the adventure, but the fact that her oracle class actually removes her most powerful harpy ability makes it a bit more doable, and allowed me to have a unique harpy in the adventure without setting up a TPK situation.

James,

Despite being a life-long fantasy reader, I'm just getting into Lovecraft having read The White Ship and Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath in the last week or so. So, a few Lovecraft questions:

1) What Lovecraft story do you think is the best introduction to his works?
2) What's your favorite Lovecraft story?
3) Kadath had the barest of mentions of the denizens of Leng and their war with the Leng spiders. Did Lovecraft cover the two in greater depth somewhere else or did all the Pathfinder mythos surrounding their war get created out of those short sentences?
4) Of all the lands visited and seen from shipside in The White Ship, which would you most like to visit & why?
- Zar, where "dwell all the dreams and thoughts of beauty that come to men once and then are forgotten,
- Thalarion, where all the mysteries that man has striven in vain to fathom reside,
- Xura, land of pleasures unattained,
- Sona-Nyl, the "Land of Fancy," or
- Cathuria, the "Land of Hope"?

spoiler:
5) Did Xura from Lovecraft play into the creation of the Cult of Zura in Souls for Smuggler's Shiv?

** spoiler omitted **

1) The Dunwich Horror is probably the most accessible entry point.

2) At the Mountains of Madness
3) The bulk of what we've done with Kadath and Leng and its denizens was created by us, but inspired not only by Lovecraft, but by Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu RPG, which has done an INCREDIBLE amount of work further expanding on the topic... as have countless other writers over the past 100 years.
4) ALL OF THEM! WHY CHOOSE?
5) Zura's name was inspired by the word "Xura," but beyond that there's not much more linkage.

What would you say is essential reading to sort of understand the Lovecraftian mindset outside of Lovecraft's own works?

I've heard it said that Lovecraft's main talent was his ability to make even mundane things seem scary because the guy was scared of almost EVERYTHING (from people of color to art nouveau to every animal that isn't a cat). Would you say that's an accurate assessment? Not trying to slander him or anything just wanna see where he was coming from with his writing...

S. T. Joshi's biography of Lovecraft is the best place to go to get a good look at who Lovecraft was and what his mindset was.

I think the fact that Lovecraft was able to find horror in the mundane or all about him certainly helped his writing, sure, but I wouldn't say that's his main talent. The fact that he encouraged so many other writers to write and helped them get their footing and helped foster an entire sub-genre that crossed gothic horror and science fiction would have been his main talent.

What as the last AP you created for Pathfinder? Titles and specifics if you please.

After Rise of the Rune Lords, what was your favorite AP in in this future? And why.

Is there any chance we'll get a colossal sized swarm?

Not a swarm of colossal creatures, but a swarm of so many creatures it makes colossal? Preferably fine sized creatures. Like an old testament locusts swarm kind of thing, that can envelop a storm giant and strip it's flesh faster than a hungry swarm of piranhas would a cow...all working in concert as a single unified force.

...If not, do you have any ideas for someone wanting to homebrew something like that? I'm still imagining what creature would be best...

By not letting "real" get in the way of "fun" for starters.

But otherwise, by not rushing things. Start small and build from there. Begin with a small town and put a lot of work into its inhabitants. It helps if you can draw upon memories of your own time growing up; use your childhood as an inspiration.

I'd rather do collector's editions of Adventure Paths like we did with Runelords. The rules are not meant to be savored as much as referenced, and the bells and whistles that'd go into a "collector's edition" would make the rules less easy to navigate.

The way swarms work is that they're large. If you want a bigger one, use multiple large swarms.

A Collector Edition covers, with a nice wrapping (the Box) and a few feelies, no need to change the texts placements in the books. Of cource APs are something else.

Seeing as it's been a few years since ultimate magic came out... What are the chances that'll we'll see any additions to the list of spells that can be affected by permanency anytime soon?

The spell does include that line at the end about other effects being able to be made permanent but many GMs are wary to allow such things (understandably so).

Hello once again James.

Once again, my favourite subject, Jobaria. Is it reasonable to assume that the region has its own strains of unique monsters, and may there be any large groups of goblins in the region, since I noticed, north isn't very gobliny.

Thanks in advance!

Do the new eidolon forms in Cohorts and Companions (avian and tauric) work with eidolons of the UNCHAINED! variety? If so, how do you determine which subtypes get which base forms? I've got an idea for a phoenix-like fire elemental but don't know if elemental eidolons can use the avian base form yet.

I already asked on the rules board and the jury's still out. :(

Chances are slim. As with the summon monster spells, adding more and more spells to Permanency starts to make that spell too powerful... at least, that's my understanding of why we haven't expanded the list officially yet. I suspect "we forgot about it" is also a reason. Sounds to me like a perfect thing to add to a Player's Companion, although I'm pretty sure none of the ones we've got in the works would make much sense for that kind of content.

But in the end... it very VERY much falls to GMs to expand the list. The fact that some GMs don't isn't as much a fault of the rules as it is of the individual GM, alas... I really REALLY wish the game (meaning 3rd edition on) hadn't undermined GM authority to rule in his/her game as much as it did, but I suppose that's an unavoidable side effect of building a robust rules system that attempts to answer all the questions.

I assume you mean Iobaria?

If so, then yes there are some unique monsters living there; we've actually done a gazetteer about the region in the 3rd Reign of Winter adventure.

Goblins aren't so big a deal there. In fact, with the exception of Isger (which is technically more hobgoblins than goblins) and the River Kingdoms (which needed goblins for the MMO, apparently), goblins are coastal creatures who tend to not stray that far inland.

How much does the process of devil promotion affect the identity of said devil?

For instance, a Pit Fiend 'promotes' a Bearded Devil into a Bone Devil by smooshing it together with several lemures. Does the Bone Devil feel that it is the same individual as the Bearded Devil? I guess Lemures don't have a strong sense of self that would derail the Bearded devil's, but what if something with a stronger identity, like an imp, was used?

Outside of devil shaping, how are the strong personality shifts between a devil's 'promotions' explained, but still retaining it as a single being (instead of a new one, borne from the ashes of the old)? An imp is a coward and a trickster, but when it is promoted to a Bearded Devil, it becomes an angry brute. How does it retain its personhood?

It reworks the devil's personality pretty significantly. There's gotta be a REASON why some devils would instead opt to pursue the acquisition of more racial HD or class levels instead of looking for a promotion, after all, and it strikes me that the retention of your personality would be pretty compelling. After all... if a bone devil is one of hell's inquisitor type roles and he gets promoted to a contract devil, he shouldn't retain the same personality as a bone devil. It'd be somewhat akin, in other words, to a soul becoming a petitioner in the first place. A wiping of memories and a new creature being formed.

Chances are good. Turns out, the creative director likes Lovecraft, and as you've seen some of those critters show up in previous adventures over the past decade, you can expect to see that continue into the future.

The shoggoth has two strikes against it ever becoming a mini, and they're the same two strikes that the aboleth is suffering.

1) It's a Huge creature. We just don't have a lot of ways to get that size category of mini out there, and there's a lot more Huges that need minis before a shoggoth, alas (including an aboleth).

2) It's an aquatic creature. For whatever reason... traditionally aquatic monsters are things folks tend to shy away from since they tend to be used less often in games.

Hmm. My advice there is to try to NOT push rules boundaries in that case. If you want to build a portfolio of characters like that, it's an advantage to NOT build one that requires rulings like that, frankly. Kind of the same way it's an advantage not to do the same in PFS. Saves you lots of frustration down the road.

How likely are we to see content (or an AP) for a new Goblin War, or failing that, just more info on Hobgoblins/Isger?

There's a little bit more info about them in Inner Sea Races, but beyond that at this point we've not announced any other products that'll touch on this topic. Not gonna say if there is or isn't in products we HAVEN'T yet announced.

How are demons promoted, if at all?

Demons aren't really "promoted" in this way. There are certainly things and locations and creatures on the Abyss capable of transforming a demon from one to another, but they're individual or unusual singularities for the most part, not part of the overall way of the Abyss.

James, I am trying to port over a race from another system but I don't know how Racial Traits are designed can you give me some hints?

The Race is called Khai-Shang think of a Samurai war weasel

I have thought of two Racial Traits
Expert Swimmer: +1 to all swim checks
Sinuous Grappler: +1 to CMB for all grapple checks, Khai-SHang are natural grapple artists and have a natural rake attack

I am not sure if the 2nd is too powerful for a Racial trait.

Will the net unannounced AP have words that describe places, people and things in it? Or is that revealing too much information?

I try to avoid doing feedback for design work here. There's lots of advice and samples of racial traits and powers in the Advanced Race Guide though.

All I can see in that question is the word "net."

Concerning the White Witches, Elvanna has ruled for a century and her older sister ruled before her, but she seems to be a more or less normal adult human. She is not listed as a Mythic character, and there seems to be no class abilities witches (unlike alchemists, monks, sorcerers, oracles and wizards) can take to become able not to die from old age. In case the question would come up on how these witches can live so long (and then also who else may also be using similar methods), how would you prefer to answer it?

I'd check out Reign of Winter for the answer. (I didn't develop that AP, but I assume that as part of it, Rob explains how the witches manage to stay alive for that long... Rob is off camping somewhere where it's supposedly 108 degrees today, so I can't just ask him...

...but if it were up to me, I'd explain it via the sun orchid elixir).

If I remember, the Crowned Queen is Virtually Immortal (Unaging), thanks partly to the Crown, and partly from Bloodline.

Rob did explain it, yes: Icecrown of Irrisen.
