Yay! More Weapons!

5/5

I don´t know what kind of Pathfinder game the writers play...

2/5

...but it´s not the one i wanna play.

I first read "Adventurer´s Armory" and then this book. The first one is superior in every single way.

GOOD:
-The Spider-Silk Bodysuit is very useful if you are a drow with high dex and not enough money for bracers of armor.
-The Dwarven war shield is nice if you always wanted to play a dwarf with two shields.
-The Drow Razor is great for sneak attacks and criticals.
-The Sanpkhang is a poison-users weapon of choice.
-Gnome Piston Maul & Gnome Ripsaw Glaive are both fun and useful.
-The Orc Hornbow is very powerful, but it´s an exotic weapon for everyone without orc-blood.
-The tools and kits are good as are the poisons.
-The six spells are all very flavorful and useful.
-The Alchemical Wares.
-Concoctions are fun, especially if you drink too many.

BAD:
-The traits are all much too specialized.
20 out of the 25 new weapons are bad.
-The Ladder, Lantern, Lamp, Mirror and Pole Equipment tricks are very special and far away from the usefulness of the Heavy Blade Scabbard and Shield tricks from AA.
-The new Clothing, magic items and Alchemical Equipment tricks are of very limited use or costly.
-The Equipment from Abroad items are underwhelming.

UGLY:
-Equipment Packages are clearly overpowered for 1st level characters. For instance, the "Holy Warrior Package" is worth 1245 gold pieces - more than a 2nd level player character has!
-Armor Modifications give very minor special boni but impose larger penalties.
-The Butchering Axe is way overpowered, i wouldn´t allow it in my games.
-The Weapon modifications are very pricy, give minor boni and often may need a feat to use.
-The nine feats are all bad.
-Out of the 18 Adventuring Gear items, 17 are very special and one is overpowered (Spring loaded scroll case).
-Nalinivati´s kiss got cut from the book but is still listed on the interior back cover.
-Poppets, while being a nice idea, are too cheap and easy to construct, their capabilities are held too vague. Their whole existence undermines the craft construct feat and would change the way manual labor is done on Golarion significantly. This is not well thought out.

To me 21 of 30 pages are useless, 9 are interesting.
While i am used to the fact that most of the Player Companions have 50% good and 50% bad content, this one is weaker than most.

Repackaging and Bloating

1/5

Following the recent trend of compiling, repackaging, and nerfing of material from other books this product also adds a lot more unnecessary and very niche gear to further contribute to Pathfinder bloat. This is compounded further with the fact that every interesting item features a drawback and Feat tax to avoid said drawback. The only standout items in this book are the Equipment Packages and the Poppets, but these aren't really enough to justify the cost and further game bloat.

Needed to be more adventurous

4/5

For the most part this is a very solid book. The equipment packages are a great idea for players who want to get started fast without hunting through pages of items for the prices of cheap equipment (and are a good value to boot), I want one of those waifu body pillows for the Butchering Axe, the Poppets are a great idea as cheap, easy-to-build, handy constructs, and I absolutely adore the new equipment tricks. There are also a number of reprinted items, but at least there's enough new material that it doesn't feel as egregious as when the Adventurer's Guide did it.

However, a bunch of the stuff seems like it was toned down or otherwise weakened in the interest of playing it safe. The biggest examples of this are probably the Armor/Weapon Modifications that were included. The basic idea is great, giving some customization options to players who want to add new effects or shiny bells to their equipment, but the system needed more room to grow and display what it could do rather than two pages overall. Most of the armor modifications aren't worth the price for the modification because the effects seem almost nerfed by committee, like the modification which dazzles a creature once per day if they fail a (admittedly good) DC, or the one which has a chance of sickening a creature if they happen to be using power attack and their mother just called last night and complained about how much better their brother is doing as a monster in The Dragon's Crypt, and have they met any nice goblin girls yet? The weapon modifications are a bit better off, but most of the modifications are miniscule bonuses that could have been boiled down to some additions to the Weapon Design Rules (from Weapon Master's Handbook) and a note on how to attach those additions to already existing weapons. As much as I'd want those rules to be expanded and refined into something really worthwhile, they're most likely just going to be forgotten as a bunch of weak non-magical weapon "enchantments".

It just feels... too toned down, in a way that's kind of hard to voice properly. Like the entire book was restrained, or the writers couldn't make a bunch of cool weird items for one reason or another. The first book had the feeling of being a treasure box of items that made your mind spin with the possibilities for each one. This one feels like a store shelf, where everything's been placed out for display in a very specific way, and you're just browsing for something that you want.

tl;dr Not the best book, but it's still fairly solid and has some good ideas and new tricks.

Reprints and Niche Gear

2/5

Cons
1) The direction of the artwork.
2) Equipment tricks
3) Niche Gear
4) Reprints of previous gear.

Pros
1) Equipment packages

I had a few questions about the weapon modifications rules and how they interact with various forms of proficiency. Check it out, and maybe hit the FAQ button if you're curious too.

I addressed the specific-weapons part upthread, if it helps. ^_^

I still need to see the printed text in its entirety to be sure about proficiency-with-weapon-group classes.

I'm too lazy to go through 355 posts, so does this booklet answer the question of uncommon sized armor cost with special materials?

Can I ask for brief, non-copy paste descriptions of the Adventurer's Sash, Rope Recaller and whatever Kitumu's ire is?

The PDF release seems so far away! :(

Do spring-loaded scroll cases mean I can now have more than two items drawable as a swift-action? Like, wands of Shield and Magic Missile, while still having a few utility scrolls available at a moment's notice?

Do those teeth chew your food for you?

Are the wing sheaths used as weapons, clothing, or restraint? Or are they underarm weapon sheaths for winged races?

What does the Razor-Sharp weapon modification do?

Spoiler:
The adventurer's sash seems to be almost identical to the version from Seekers of Secrets; the wording of the last two sentences has been modified slightly, but mechanically it seems identical.

A rope recaller is a clockwork mechanism that contains rope which can be used, and then retracts said rope when activated, though it can only handle so much weight.

Kitumu's ire can be thrown at someone, after which it makes them a favorite target of any swarms around as well as making it harder for them to deal with swarms.

What does the Razor-Sharp weapon modification do?

Spoiler:
No, it only holds a single scroll, which is retrievable as a swift action.

Clockwork teeth are more of novelties that can move in a straight line after being wound up.

Wing sheaths help creatures with wings conceal them from view.

Razor-sharp weapons deal extra damage a limited number of times per day.

I was actually thinking more along the lines of "a dozen scroll cases running down each leg."

So how expensive are, and how exactly do the Acid, Fire, and Ice Bolt alchemical weapons work? I want to hope that alchemists may finally get the chance to make crossbows finally shine, but I'm not holding my breath on these things being anything but adding a minuscule amount of split damage and that's it.

Thank you Luthorne! :) This helps tremendously. :)

Quickly, does sunsilver work better than regular silver in fighting vampires?

Acid and Ice Bolts cost 40 gold, Fire cost 50, and all are craftable with DC 25 Craft (Alchemy). They do normal crossbow damage +1d4 of relevant damage type.

A bit of a shame, if I have to be honest. I guess it was probably too much to hope for a special crossbow ammunition that gets treated as a splash weapon for the sake of adding an Alchemist's Throw Anything damage bonus.

Do we finally get a potion belt in this manual?

Kind've odd that fire arrows are the most expensive, when they're the least likely to be useful. In any case, they all cost less than a third the price of a +1 flaming/shock/corrosive/whatever arrow, which is nice.

don't forget the rest of the pointless armours - list:

for a trifle of 1005/1100gp you can have nimble padded armour/quilted cloth (I think this requires a feat) with armour bonus and ACP of 0 and max dex of 10! just in case you though you were getting too much dex to AC with over 10
or if you want a bit less max dex than the nimble padded armour you've got the option of 0 armour bonus, 7 max dex nimble reinforced tunic for 1001gp

or ofc there's the nimble silken ceremonial/haramaki for 1030/1003gp with 0 armour bonus and ACP and no max dex

I don't suppose those alchemical bolts have text in them to allow alchemical arrows, do they? Or are they supposed to be a crossbow-specific perk?

While it is pretty hilarious, I guess I could see it as a fairly expensive magic armor enchantment delivery system for someone who managed to get over 30 Dex. Which, come to think of it, is actually pretty possible.

But for those situations, you've already got the standard Haramaki which has no limit on Dex. And it costs all of 3gp.

Granted, my wizard has silken ceremonial armor, but that's less for the look and more for the material.

Haramaki have a chainmail bikini flavor to them? Aren't they the opposite: big bands of mail covering the belly region while you otherwise wear normal clothes?

On a more thread-relevant note, I heard upthread that there are sweet things for improvised weapon users in here. Other than the Gloves of Improvised Might, what else is there that makes improvised weapons a more practical fighting style? Also, do the gloves of improvised might play a role similar to an amulet of mighty fists, or do they do something totally different?

New options and modifiers depending on the shape and state of the improvised weapon in question.

And yes.

The gloves are virtually identical to an Amulet, except they're gloves and unfortunately *do* have to have at least a +1.

Uh yeah not really seeing what you mean there

In general, real life armors never have that "chainmail bikini" flavor because fetishist armor was never a thing in real life periods were armors were used :P

Yeah, haramakis were a thing all over the armor-making world, just Japan's take is what's used for Paizo's eastern armor entry. It's literally just a belly wrap with little metal plates or chain sewn behind or between the fabric layers.

Anyone have any idea what the sickle-sword is supposed to look like? The description doesn't really help illustrate what this thing is supposed to look like in action and pretty much every other weapon traditionally called a sickle sword (sica, khopesh, etc.) has already been statted and illustrated somewhere else. Does anyone know if there is some preexisting art for this specific Irrisen weapon?

OK, this leaves me wondering what I was finding when I searched for images when someone suggested this armor to me a year or two ago. I wonder if some jokester was messing around with wikipedia or something.

I suspect there's a pricing error on p12, for the Cane

A Simple Cane is described as being "no more than a sturdy branch", and yet it is priced at 2GP - 20 times as much as a Common Cane.

My guess would be that the Simple Cane should be priced at 2CP, not 2GP.

I feel like there was a missed opportunity with the cane. With the Ezren pregen there is a damage listing for the cane, but there is no place that actually lists the cane as a weapon or damage for it. I wish they had included weapon stats for the cane or even just a statement that it deals damage as a <insert appropriate weapon here>.

This would legitimize the Ezren pregen's stats and opened up the cane for PFS characters as a weapon choice.

Don't we already have the hanbo from the original Adventurer's Armory to act as a cane, though?

But isn't a cane a kind of walking stick?

Edit: At least I presume we're talking about the walking cane that's a walking stick with a curved top much like a shepherd's staff, but shorter, and not the actual material cane, which seems too flimsy to really make a good weapon out of; most walking canes are made out of wood or something more durable despite originating from walking sticks made from the material.

Silver Crusade

A cane can be a walking stick but not all walking sticks are canes.

Sovereign Court

I'm failing to grasp the distinction. Both a cane and walking stick are lengths of wood used for support. It seems like a hanbo could be styled as a cane.
