Hello all.

I've been debating with myself over this for a few days now but I have to make the a decision.

On top of my immediate family getting hit with the sickies, we found out some news that has scrambled mine and my wife's priorities drastically.

The short of it is that her paternal grandparents are in need of far more help than they had been letting on and we are the only family who can/will help.

I tried several times to hop on and make another post but I just lack the mental energy to put anything together. This group (and others) has been some of the best Pathfinder I've played in years. And not just PbP.

I wish you all the best, if were in contact via other means, feel free to shoot me a message. I may even pop into a discord for a bit here and there.

I give the GM full permission to handle my PC however they see fit.

Hopefully, when things settle down, I can reconnect with everyone.

I'm actually going to withdraw as well. Good luck everyone!

I PMed Axolotyla few days ago about using the background that I had submitted previously for the character but haven't heard back.

If need be, I can whip up a new one.

Personally, I would go ahead and pick something. That book isn't due until next year and there's this section from page 6 of the player's guide.

"Pathfinder Lost Omens Tian Xia Character Guide Ancestries: Many more ancestries common to Tian Xia will be introduced in the Pathfinder Lost Omens Tian Xia Character Guide, due for publication in 2024—if you wish to play any of these ancestries once these options become available, speak with your GM."

I have an idea of what Hexes I want to take (specifically avoiding slumber because I've developed a hatred for that hex over the years) and I was hoping to pick up Improved Familiar at level 7 for a Silvanshee.

Background:

Trigger Warning (Self-Harm & DV)

It had been a year since Casina Brochus had made her decision about her future. A year since she had begun begging the town leaders to let her participate in the Quest for the Everflame. Today, while double checking her equipment in preparation for the journey to bring back the Everflame, Casina found herself thinking about the day her life changed forever and how, after this was all over, she would be a full-fledged adventurer. Casina had made plans to leave town during the celebrations. The memories of what happened a year ago were simply too much.

One year ago:

Casina knelt beside her father. Even kneeling, one could tell that Casina was a foot or more shorter than the man. It was the same ritual her father, Lionel, performed every morning: kneel before the small altar in their home, think on the names of every person whose lives he had taken and picture each of their faces while thinking of their deaths. Over the years, the ritual had taken more and more time and though Casina’s list of names only included a couple of sick pets or livestock, she always stayed by her father until he was finished.

“And finally, Morden Solvina,” her father said. “His sentencing I carried out yesterday. Life ended as punishment for the four lives he took while attempting to rob a carriage.” Lionel opened his eyes and began to rise from his kneeling position only to fall back down to one knee.

“I’ve got you,” Casina said as she gripped her father under one arm.

Together they climbed to their feet. Lionel blew out the candles atop the altar and Casina ladled some of the steaming, sweet potato soup into two bowls. It was a recipe from her mother’s cookbook and so far, Casina was not doing her mother’s memory justice. Still, with some coffee, a loaf of rye to dip into and, and a couple of sausages, the taste wasn’t terrible.

“Not much longer and you’ll be taking my place under the hood,” Lionel said with a groan as he slid into his chair at the table.

Casina let out an exasperated sigh and took her own seat. “Can we not start the day with an argument for once?” She asked.

“We’re not,” her father said. “We started the day with our prayers.” He grinned and took a bite of one of his sausages.

“You know what I mean,” Casina followed his example and also skipped over the soup.

Lionel swallowed his bite and took a sip of his coffee before speaking again. “I’m not lookin’ for an argument, Cass. I’m gettin’ old. Too old to swing the ax. S!~%, I damn near fell over Morden Solvina’s body when I brought the ax down.”

“Papa!” Casina exclaimed. She had never heard him speak so informally of an execution.

Lionel waved her away and finally dared a sip of the sweet potato soup. “I’m serious. My back and my - it’s much better than last time - My back and, well, my whole body ain’t what it used to be. You’re gonna be hittin’ twenty soon and I think it’s about time I hang up my hood and you take over.”

“I told you, I don’t want to be an executioner!” She could hear it in her voice. The petulance. She knew how she sounded and she did not care. How many times would they have the same argument before he dropped it and found someone else to be his successor?

“For the last-” Lionel started to shout back. He caught himself and took a deep breath. Lionel set his spoon down beside his bowl and took a deep breath before starting over. “I am not yelling. Please do not yell at me. No, listen to me before you reply. Truly listen to my words. Kassen needs an executioner. It does. It’s an unfortunate thing but every town and city does. And, unfortunately, a good number of people who wear the hood are not the best of people. They don’t understand the burden of the hood.” Lionel slid one hand across the table to his daughter. “I do. And you do too. It’s hard. And it can be lonely. And sometimes kids will cry when they see you walk out in the hood. Even if they call you Uncle Lionel at home.” A sad smile flickered on his face. “But when it's someone who understands the burden up there, people know they can trust their judgment. There have been a handful of times when I refused to carry out a sentencing. Augustus Wildronorn. Gods, what a silly name. He was tried and found guilty of the murder of his wife and son.”

Casina sat, dumbfounded. She had never heard her father string so many words together. Let alone, speak about refusing his duty. She swallowed the saliva that had pooled her mouth. “Did he do it?”

Lionel took a sip of his coffee. “Augustus swore up and down and on every holy book they would bring him that he didn’t do it. Claimed some “Night Man” was responsible. ‘Course, they investigated. Even sent a couple of mercenaries to check it out. Everything came up lookin’ like Augustus had done it. Still, when it came time to take that man’s life…” Lionel paused. He raised his hands above his head, miming holding an ax. His eyes unfocused as if he was looking at something in the distance. “I just knew. I knew it in my bones and in my soul that Augustus Wildronorn was innocent and I let the ax fall beside him.”

Casina realized she had been leaning forward in her chair and shifted back. “And was he? Innocent, I mean?”

“Gods no! They brought in one of them Abadaran Inquisitors. Did some spell that forced the man to tell the truth and he confessed every gruesome detail. Next day, he was back up there and I lopped his head clean off.”

She gave her father an incredulous look and asked, "Are you serious? So, after that whole story you were wrong."

The point of the story," he said, "is that from then on the people of Kassen knew that I wouldn't simply execute whoever was put on the block. That I was there to uphold the law, not be a tool for intimidation. There ended up being a couple More people over the years who I refused who actually ended up being innocent."

"Well, Dad, despite your story, I refuse to be an executioner. It's not what I want to do." Casinas said. "And I don't want to live your life."

Lionel slammed an open palm down on the table rattling the dishes. "If your mother was here-" he shouted.

"Well she's not!" Casina cut him off. "And no amount of deep breathing is going to bring her back. So, you can preach about good intentions and making wise decisions but it won't change the fact that Mom left because you couldn't control your anger."

Tears began to well up in Lionel's eyes as he spoke. "Cass, I know that I drove your mother away. And I'm sorry. But you know I have worked hard to change who I am."

"Really?" She forced her own tears back. "Because that broken saucer in front of you says otherwise. Casina pushed herself away from the table and headed for the front door. She pulled on her boots and opened the front door.

"Cas," Lionel pleaded with her. "Please don't leave."

"Funny, that's almost word for word what you said to Mom."

"Cass, please."

The sound of the door slamming in the frame still echoed in her mind a short while later as she was heading home. Guilt had driven her to get the ingredients to make Lionel's favorite dessert.

[I]"There's a lot of people out right now,"[I]She thought. A large crowd formed a semicircle on the street. [I]"Shouldn't everyone be working or preparing lunch?"[I]she thought.

"Cass!" someone called from up ahead. "Cass!" One of the neighborhood women shouted again.

Something about the way the woman was calling Casina caused the hairs on the back of her neck to stand up. Casina rushed forward and pushed through the crowd, ignoring the murmuring. There, coming out of the front door to her home, were three Pharasman clerics carrying a litter. Even with the white sheet draped across the body he recognized her father.

"No," she screamed. "No, get away from my Dad."She dropped the basket she had been carrying. Flour, green apples, and a small container of dried cinnamon spilled out on the street. Casina shoved one of the clerics aside. She ignored the gasps from the crowd of gawkers and ripped the sheet away from her father's face. Dry tears streaked his cheeks. On one side of his face sweet potato soup had formed an orange crust. The dried soup trailed down to his neck where it merged into a sticky, red-brown mess.

The cleric she had shoved aside placed a hand on her shoulder. "One of the neighbors found him," the elderly woman said. "They said that they had seen you leave and wanted to come check on your father. They found him at the kitchen table."

"What?"

"This really isn't the play time or place to have this discussion," the cleric said.

And then Casina noticed the red line along Lionel's neck where the artery sits. The tears and the wailing came next.

The Pharasman waited in silence for a few minutes. Casina did not even register the town guards ushering the townspeople away.

"I am sorry, child," the cleric said after some time. "Sometimes the most powerful demons are those we battle alone."

Casina simply wept.

Player Questionnaire:

1.What time zone are you in? EST/EDT

2. How long have you been playing TTRPGs? Over a decade

3. What’s your favorite part about playing TTRPGs? Creating interesting characters and stories. Also, the sound of them clack clack dice.

4. What do you expect from this game? A fun (if not relatively short) game that might lead to a longer format. Maybe some rotating of GMs.

5. What do you expect out of your fellow players? My biggest thing is respect. If someone has an idea but it might cross a boundary or step on some toes, just ask. Most people just want to have some sort of communication. Same goes for any long period of silence. Communication is key.

6. What do you expect out of me? See above.

7. (If you don't want this to be public, PM me the answer to this one and just note that you did so.) Beyond the obvious (generally stuff already prohibited by Paizo's forum rules,) what are your redlines? Are there any topics, themes, or imagery that you absolutely do not want to see in the game? I understand that I’ve had a bit of a privileged life. I’m generally open to just about anything as long as it genuinely serves a narrative purpose. That being said/written, I will never be one to push for anything like that if anyone has expressed any sort of issue. I mean, I included suislide in Cas' backstory and alluded to dv. But I made sure to put a trigger warning.

I think Paizo’s rules are a pretty good standard.

Rolling to see if I'll even have anything worth playing.

4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 6, 1) = 15 14
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6, 3) = 20 17
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 2, 3) = 12 10
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 4, 6) = 18 16
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 6, 2) = 10 9
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 6) = 15 14

Not bad. Somehow still managed to end up with a negative. I'm thinking about possibly a Pally since it's been a wile since I've played one and I need my fix.

Once you reach a certain post amount, you can't. So if you post the alias and continue to chat in it, you'll get locked in.

It's far simpler to wait until your selected to create the alias.

Just for future reference, the links AdamWarnock provided to our characters go directly to the posts where we submitted. It is extremely common to wait until after being selected to create an alias in order to keep from bogging one's profile down with dozens of unused aliases.

Furthermore, you seem extremely defensive over Adam not listing your character as being completed however, unless AdamWarnock has been made privy to your discord discussions, they would have no way to know.

Well, I had plans to post mechanics last night and backstory tonight but I fell asleep in my son's room during bedtime. So, here's everything.

A bit about me: I disappeared from the boards a few years ago. My dad was in poor health and he, unfortunately, did not end up pulling through. It took a little while to get things back to some semblance of normalcy and I've been fortunate to bump into some familiar faces (Yes, I saw you @Adam) who have helped me get back into the groove.

I have goofy four year old son so, sometimes he or my wife do take priority on things. But I generally post during the day while I'm at work.

Background:

“Relax. Relax,” Kessir Laeva drew out the last part of the word to emphasize his meaning. He placed a gentle hand on the elbow of his student’s drawing arm. “The bowstring should be tight, not you.”

The boy took a deep breath and eased his shoulders.

“Good, good,” Kessir said. “Now, don’t rush it. Take your time. These are just targets so there’s no time limit on aiming.” Kessir took a step back and watched the target at the other end of the field. After a few seconds, he glanced back at the student then to the target again. A few more seconds passed and the boy released the tension in the bow and lowered it to the ground.

“My shoulders and back got tired!” The boy complained.

“Well, yeah. I said take your time not wait all day. At some point you need to loose the arrow.” Kessir chuckled and a couple of the other students joined in.

“Don’t laugh at me!”

Kessir put one hand up to quiet the group and knelt in front of the boy with the bow. “We’re not laughing at you-

“I am!” One of the girls, Sera, said.

“Okay, Sera is laughing at you. But the rest of us aren’t,” Kessir said. He held his hand out for the bow and the boy gave it over reluctantly. “Laughing helps you relax. It can release tension. In fact, if a baby is fighting sleep, you can help it by getting the baby to laugh.” Kessir tickled the boy’s ear with the fletching of the arrow. “When we laugh, it tells our mind that we’re safe, that we can be still.”

Kessir stood and let out a deep belly laugh before aiming the bow and arrow at the target. He drew the string back and loosed the arrow hitting one of the outer rings.

The boy scrunched up his face. “It didn’t help you all that much.”

“Yeah, well, I’m not the best archer in Heldren,” Kessir replied.

“So, then why are you our teacher?” the bour asked.

Kessir grinned and narrowed his eyes at the boy, “Because, you toad, I understand the how and why of archery. I can teach you the fundamentals and then, if you want to pursue it further, you can do so with a more technical teacher. I’m just here to help make sure our little village can survive.”

“Can’t a spear or a sword do the same thing?” the boy asked.

Kessir bobbed his head side-to-side. “Yes and no. What I mean is, they can definitely get the job done. But,” he held a finger up, “there are things out there that you just don’t want to get close to.” Kessir gestured to the other end of the field. “Sera! Since you seem to be nice and relaxed from that good laugh, how’s ‘bout you go fetch that arrow and come show us what you can do, eh?”

That evening, as Kessir swept the last stones in the entryway to Erastil’s Temple, he found himself reliving the last day he had gone hunting with his parents. His father, Thomane, had been regarded as the best archer in Heldren and his mother, Seshka, had been an unparalleled tracker.

The trio had been following the tracks of a large boar deep within the Border Wood and the sun was getting low. The little light that could make it through the canopy caused shadows to stretch, hiding roots and brambles.

“We should head back,” his mother had said. “This far in isn’t safe at night.”

“Just a few more minutes. You said it yourself: ‘the boar must be close.’” Thomane replied. “And look! There!” He pointed to a moving mass of brown fur in a clearing. ”Kessir. Ready your bow. This is your hunt, son.”

Kessir, barely seventeen, nodded quickly. He crept forward to join his father and raised his bow.

“Relax. Relax,” Thomane said. “Remember, the bowstring should be tight, not you.”

Seshka appeared next to them. “Something isn’t right. The forest is too quiet.”

Thomane looked up at the trees. “You’re right. Something-”

“M-Mom. Dad.” Kessir stammered. “I think I wanna go home.”

As his parents turned to see what had frightened Kessir, the boar rose up on its hind legs. The fur and flesh melted away, sloughing to the muddy ground, to reveal a sickly-green crone with knotted hair. She stepped from the pile of gore and flesh with one hand held out in the direction of the hunters. In the dim light, Kessir could see the hag’s mouth move and a few moments later, a rasping voice spoke as if coming from the tree beside the family.

“Ohhhh. But you are hoooome, dear. You’re in my hoooome.”

The thwang of his father’s bowstring snapped Kessir back to reality. Seshka grabbed Kessir by the shoulders and shoved him back the way they had come. “Run! Run and don’t stop until you are back in Heldren!”

Kessir stumbled over a loose rock. He crawled backwards as his father loosed two more arrows at the creature. Kessir scrambled to his feet. His mother had pulled twin short swords from their scabbards. In the fading light, Kessir could just make out the tears streaming down his mother’s face.

“Go!” She screamed.

And he did.

So, I have an Inquisitor of Erastil built. I need to put together a backstory. I'll have the mechanics posted tonight.

Sovereign Court

I have some ideas floating around but I was hoping for some clarification on the books allowed.

Does that include splat books as well?

What are rarity boons? Is it, like, if I play a Tengu, then I have access to a katana?

It means, first off, if you choose Tengu that you have already chosen 1 of your Uncommon Boons (Tengu is an uncommon ancestry, like Android is a rare ancestry).

So then you would have 1 more Uncommon choice to make, such as Sherrif for a background, or Aasimar as a Heritage.

That was my understanding of it as well. Think of it as a way to allow uncommon & rare things without anyone taking advantage.

Sovereign Court

I could be interested. I would really love to get a chance to try out the remastered rules as they come out.

I would think that, given the location the AP takes place, they would suggest some of the Tian based races in the player's guide. If they do (or even if they don't for some reason) would you count those against the Rarity Boon SLots?

Sovereign Court

Yeah, but, like, 1E means someone could possibly use the Spell Cartridges feat.

Pulp is always a plus in my book.

Between PF1E & 2E, I would also prefer 1E. Though reskinning truly shouldn't be an issue with either as long as you steer clear of fully changing mechanics. I second Robert Henry's suggestion of the firearms.

I have a passing familiarity with CoC as well but it seems like you're trying to stick to one of the two systems.

Background:

“Get your head in the game, Zondre!”

Taren shoved Zondre to the side as a half-orc brought his foot down in a powerful axe kick.

“Kurgess’ biceps! This guy's calf is as thick as my waist!” Zondre ducked to the side and landed a glancing blow on the half-orc's ribs.

Taren rolled to the large man's other side, narrowly avoiding a backhand strike from the half-orc's right hand. The half-orc grunted and let the momentum from his backhand pull him around, driving his left knee into Taren's gut. Taren folded around the half-orc's leg but managed to stay on his feet. Zondre launched herself into the air. Just as the half-orc turned to face her, Zondre brought her wrapped fist crashing down into her opponent's face. The half-orc wobbled, stumbled backwards, and toppled over Taren.

The crowd broke into a mixture of cheers and curses. Taren coughed and started to leave the dirt-packed arena.

“C'mon, Zondre,” Taren said.

“Hang on a minute,” Zondre replied.

Zondre cracked some smelling salts under the half-orc’s nose. The big man’s eyes opened to the sight of a large grin forming on Zondre’s face.

The half-orc pinched his nose, stifling the blood flow.

“That,” the fighter grumbled, “was a helluva fight!” He returned Zondre’s grin and stumbled out of the ring.

“C'mon, Zondre,” Taren repeated.

Zondre closed her eyes and breathed in the smell of the dirt, the blood, and the sweat.

“One more minute…I need to soak in as much of this as I can.”

Afterwards, Zondre and Taren collected their share of the winnings and hired a carriage to take Zondre back home to Westcrown.

“Sure I can't convince you to come home?” Zondre asked her friend.

“Positive,” Taren said. “I kinda like Magnimar. Besides, if I leave now, Holbik will think that I’m just trying to avoid his parents coming to stay with us.”

The two friends shared a final, somber laugh and Zondre climbed into the carriage.

“Alright,” Zondre told herself, “I think I’ve been away long enough.”

Appearance & Personality:

At 6'1” Zondre is on the taller side for an aasimar. With dark eyes, light hair, and a dark skin, Zondre’s grandparents always said she got her height from her mother - a Varisian dancer - and everything else from her father - a traveling musician from the southern continent. Much to her grandparents' chagrin, Zondre ran off and found someone to give her a “traditional Mwangi tattoo.” It wasn’t until later she found out what the symbol actually meant, “mupute.” Zondre laughed about it for the entire week that her grandparents kept her on lock-down as punishment.

Zondre faces every challenge head-on, oftentimes overcoming challenges through sheer blunt force. It is rare for Zondre to be genuinely angry over a loss, she may be upset at her own failing, but, as long as the terms set before her are fair Zondre considers any loss as a chance to grow.

I've got an idea for a brawler that I'm mulling over. I might get a concept posted later today.

Sovereign Court

I just can't get my brain to settle on anything. Consider my towel thrown.

Hi, everyone! I've been eyeing this recruitment for a few days now and I was wanting to throw out an idea that I've been kicking around.

A dhampir sorcerer (undead bloodline) that prestiges as a Soul Warden.

The concept essentially being the dhampir who is drawn to combat the dark. Given that Carrion Crown takes place in Ustalav, I was considering having him be from there but I haven't settled on that point just yet.

Sovereign Court

Hey! Congrats to those chosen. I'll probably be keeping an eye on your game for a bit, I'm interested to see how some of these characters develop.

Good gaming!

Sovereign Court

Hey, good luck everyone! Looks like this is going to be a tough one. Lots of really cool characters submitted.

Sovereign Court

Just a reminder to anyone still wanting to put a submission out there that today is the last day.
