The Pathfinder Bestiary 2 breaks free May 27!

More than 300 menacing monsters and fearsome foes await within a compendium of creatures from the world of Pathfinder! From classic adversaries like giants, dragons, and the jabberwock to potential allies and servants suitable for summoners of every alignment, this must-have expansion to the Pathfinder Bestiary seethes with enemies to challenge characters of any level.

Here is a look at the monsters on the cover and Table of Contents, vie the art, the first paragraph of their description, and the sidebar flavor!

Grendel

This reaver of the cold marsh is not just a monster; he is a force of nature. Where there is peace and prosperity in the world, Grendel strikes, eager to prove that tranquility is transitory and death is the only constant. He stalks the edge of his fens, seeking settlements where joy holds sway. He strikes under cover of night, primarily targeting celebrations or festivals. The more happiness or joy he can extinguish, the better.

GRENDEL’S MOTHER

At the bottom of a remote mountain lake filled with sea serpents is a magical house—the lair of Grendel’s mother. Among her many treasures is a sword so big and heavy that only a supernaturally strong individual can wield it. When Grendel is injured, he retreats here to heal.

Morlock

Originating from humans long lost from the world of light, morlocks are brutal monsters that dwell in the tangled tunnels of the upper reaches of the Darklands. Their wiry frames mask the strength of their limbs and their swift reactions, and their arms are long enough that they can drop into an uncanny, four-limbed shuffle for speed or stealth. They no longer remember the lives their ancestors led on the surface, although many morlocks still dwell in the shattered ruins of their ancient homes. Some morlocks worship the statues of humans from these bygone eras as gods, but others now worship Lamashtu, Rovagug, or other violent deities.

MORLOCK MACHINERY

Morlocks tend toward brutish actions and violent traditions and have little interest in bettering their societies or creating art. However, they have a strange obsession with ancient machinery and magical items, particularly clockwork constructions. Their knack for tinkering helps keep ancient guardians and traps functional, even if their work backfires now and then

Ravener

Though their lifespans can measure in millennia, all dragons must eventually perish. While many do so on the blades or under the spells of dragonslayers, some manage to outlast their enemies and must, in time, face the truth that awaits all living creatures at the end of their natural lifespan. As with many other creatures, some dragons respond to such looming reminders of their own mortality poorly, and the particularly prideful or wrathful of their kind often lash out in anger when confronted by this grim truth. Peace and acceptance may find some dragons, but the most stubborn of their ilk (and invariably the most wicked) may pursue a different answer to the problem. These dragons seek out sinister rites that can transform them into undead creatures known as raveners.

RAVENER LAIRS

Cunning and paranoid, raveners prefer to make their lairs in places hostile to mortal life: atop peaks so high that living creatures struggle to breathe the rarefied air, submerged beneath pools of magma in the caldera of an active volcano, and so on. Some raveners even go so far as to deliberately fill their entire lair with lethally poisonous gases, and raveners that are capable of advanced spellcasting often seal their lairs completely, accessing them exclusively by spells such as teleport or gaseous form. Of course, raveners must feed on the living to persist, so they never locate their lairs so far from sources of life that they’ll starve.

There are additional sidebars on ravener minions, spellcasters, and patrons!

Serpentfolk

Before their ancient clash with humanity devastated their civilization, serpentfolk were masters of a sprawling underground empire. Few serpentfolk survive today; their power is shattered, their god Ydersius decapitated (although not quite slain). The cunning, intelligence, and magical abilities of serpentfolk have diminished from their ancient heights, and most are born without these boons. Those serpentfolk who retain their ancestry’s legacy of intelligence and magic are known as zyss, and they look down upon their more numerous kindred with a mix of disdain and shame. They see these offshoots as a curse on their kind, resulting from their god’s decapitation and the pandemonium during the fall of their underground empire, and have dubbed them aapoph, meaning “chaos made flesh.”

THE HEADLESS KING

Ydersius was defeated by an Azlanti heroine named Savith in the era before Earthfall, and now the so-called Headless King’s body prowls aimlessly in the Darklands. That the decapitated god’s clerics still gain power from worship points to Ydersius’s tenacity and continued existence, after a fashion. Those who seek to recover his skull and return it to his body hope that doing so will restore both him and the sekmin civilization to their full power.

So I don't know how closely Paizo is looking at the Beowolf Saga , but it has been clearly established by Beowolf scholars that Grendel's Mother looks like a sparkly Angelina Jolie. I hope for Paizo's sake, the art and any future adventure path's will reflect this fact.

I only wish there were more Celestials but this is still awesome! :D

Also, apparently the Kytons are now called Velstrac? Interesting.

Don't forget the innate spiked heels.

I got the PDF a bit early due to a glitch on the site, and got the chance to use the Sea Drake as a boss monster a couple nights ago. It's a fantastic book.

Super happy and excited for everything here, although I admit I'm somewhat disappointed that we still don't have the level 20s for all the core types of Planar Outsiders.

We already have 20s Demons, Devils, and Aeons, and it looks like we're getting Azatas, Psychopomps, and possibly Angels and Archons (in PF1, the Solar was level 23 and the Star Archon was 19, but I could see them using them both used for the level 20s, especially the Solar if they want each of the outsider groups to feel more "equal" in nature and now that Angels seem to be the go-to for Neutral good rather than Agathion).

We still need Daemons and Proteans for sure, and most likely Archons as well. I definitely still want my Izfiitars. I do hope that Solars are re-branded as the Angel level 20, just because I don't like their top tier being better than the other Outsiders.

Thankfully we have the level 1s. IMO they are even more important since we know that the APG is going to have rules for special specific familiars! That really excites me, and helps to flesh out the cavalcade of the Outsiders so that it helps to feel like we've got a whole ecosystem for them available. But we still need the cream of the crop of them all.

I don't mean to come across as ungrateful or anything. This looks INCREDIBLE. I just have a game I'm planning that specifically needs a 20 for each and I was just sort of figuring they'd be here.

i dont see anywhere new rakshasa ? Is it normal ?

I'm a bit sad that there are no robotz with lasors in here, but oh well, there's always the next Bestiary.

<snip>

For the most part, monster levels in P2 appear to match their CRs in P1. So, going by that guideline, the only outsiders that do not have a level 20 between both P2 Bestiaries would be Angels & Proteans: in P1, the level 20s for Angels is the Empyrean & for Proteans is the Izfiitar (as you've mentioned). IIRC the Solar is still above level 20 in P2 (same level as the Jabberwock?).

So:

  • Devil-->Pit Fiend(B1);
  • Dæmon-->Olethrodaemon(B2);
  • Demon-->Balor(B1);
  • Aeon-->Pleroma(B1);
  • Psychopomp-->Yamaraj(B2);
  • Protean-->X;
  • Archon-->Bastion(B2);
  • Angel-->X;
  • Azata-->Veranallia(B2).

(While I'm pretty confident with the list, you could ask someone with the book (pdf or hard copy) to confirm the level 20s in the Pathfinder Bestiary 2...)

Hope this helps.

Carry on,

<edit> There's also the Velstrac (Shadow Plane fiends formerly known as kytons) level 20: Eremite!

I was wondering if this is a hint of a future Serpent's Skull II AP.

Between this and James Jacobs recently offering repeated, passionate arguments against making serpentfolk a playable ancestry, I very much agree with you. We'll find out in a week or so!

Ooo I hope so, that would take some of the sting, since they haven't been used since Serpent's Skull.

For sure. My current players don't love the jungle (we're doing Age of Ashes and they long for city days), but such a book could still be a ways off.

My personal wishlist is this sort of campaign in Mwangi, but with a lot of time centered around Magaambya. And that the Magaambya gets its own good-sized Lost Omens entry around that time too. I adore the Mwangi style Paizo is leaning on with PF2, and I really hope they take advantage of the freshness and quality of the setting they're building.

A Magaambya campaign that also deals with Sekmin cities or ruins would be awesome.

I feel like there has been A LOT of Magaambya teasing in 2e so far. Anandi, new ancestries mentioned in one of the lost omens books, and Old-Mage Jatembe feels like he's come up quite a bit. I might just be reading into it because I love the region and Serpent's Skull, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of the next APs is in that area. Can't wait for next week to find out!

I think "The Slithering" upcoming adventure is only going to whet that particular appetite all the more.

Oh, yeah! I had forgotten about that adventure. Interesting to note so far we've had The Fall of Plaguestone (set in Isger) paired with Age of Ashes (Main base in Isger), and The Dead God's Hand (Absolam) was meant to be paired with either Extinction Curse (Absolam) or Agents of Edgewatch (Absolam). Seems to suggest that Paizo is planning on pairing mods with APs.

And Lost Omens, too! Given that with Dead God's Hand, EC, and AoE we are still expecting to get the Absalom: City of Lost Omens. Hopefully hear about that one's release soon.

So I'm thinking if we're getting the Slithering and maybe next year (this is so speculative, haha) a Mwangi-based AP, Lost Omens might get us more lore, character options, and so forth. Fingers crossed.

Its hebrew word so you can find out with googling

The fun part is that you can google it, and get different pronunciations depending on which source you check out. So if that's what you're planning, pick a source that you trust rather than just whatever comes up first.

Seems like klee fott is pretty popular though.

I completely missed the Bastion and the Olethrodaemon and that's weird because I was totally looking for them both...So thanks!

I'd still really hope that the Solar is brought back down to 20 so that it's on the same level as the others. I just don't like the idea that the Angels get to have a more powerful baseline top tier. How they get to just be better than any other outsider group. I know the Empyrean is supposed to be the CR 20 Angel, but I'd be fine if it was dropped to CR 18.

Not including special characters like Demon and Empyreal Lords of course. I'm talking about the highest level of regular nameless Outsiders.

Of course.

He is a god and thus super hard to kill. The campaign does describe method for destroying his skull, but its considered post campaign content(which haven't so far been "canon" events in sense they have been confirmed to have happened for most part), campaign just ends with

:
you separating skull from his body again before he can fully restore his godly powers after which his body drops into pit to wander the darklands once again

Only weird thing about Serpent's Skull canon(besides we being unaware which faction won the race to find the city I think?) is that it assumes pcs murderhoboed Ruthazek the gorilla king(for old school pathfinder villain, I guess he had outlived interest in being featured in future content). Since when he appears in adventure he is WAY higher level than pcs are and its essentially roleplaying encounter(with option of him coming back post campaign in bid to become demon lord)

(its same type of weird as Numerians being unaware of who killed Ozmyn Zaidow... Because default 2e assumes players skipped encountering Kevoth-Kul at all to go directly into technic league compound. I know why they did that(to avoid referring to heroes who rescued KK from his drug addiction) but its weird because from gameplay perspective players would be severely underleveled vs the hardest version of compound :D)

This. We don't really have much of an interest these days in continuing the Gorilla King story, and so we decided to make Serpents' Skull the end of it.
