Help Paizo Celebrate Kingmaker's 10th Anniversary!

Thursday, May 2, 2019

It's been an amazing year for Kingmaker, which made its digital debut in Owlcat Games' CRPG adaptation last fall. Many of you have been playing through the incredible story and experiencing first-hand the expanded storylines, companion interactions, and kingdom-building that the game has brought to life.

The Kingmaker Adventure Path debuted 10 years ago, and the softcover adventures that make up the epic campaign have long been out of print. We've wanted to return to the Stolen Lands in a complete Adventure Path hardcover collection, as we did for Rise of the Runelords and Curse of the Crimson Throne, but the question was always one of scope and timing. On the eve of Kingmaker's tenth anniversary next year, the timing answer seemed obvious, but we still don't know how much additional content to add, especially in the wake of the computer game's expansive release.

How much new and updated content is the right amount? We'll let you decide!

Paizo is partnering with our friends at Game On Tabletop to launch the Kingmaker Adventure Path for Pathfinder Second Edition. We'll start with a hardcover Kingmaker compilation, and you'll tell us how much more you want to see. The companions from the computer game were also a big hit, so we'll be adding a Companion Guide to introduce them to the tabletop campaign, complete with NPC stats, sidequest encounters, and expanded kingdom-management roles. Finally, we'll add a hardcover Kingmaker Bestiary for 5E, developed in conjunction with industry leaders in third-party 5E publishing, allowing players of the current edition of the world's oldest RPG the chance to experience the rich and detailed storylines that have made the Kingmaker Adventure Path a fan favorite for a decade. More add-ons and unlocks will be revealed as the campaign progresses.

You'll be able to see all the details on Tuesday, May 7 at noon Pacific time at KingmakerCampaign.com. The campaign will run through midnight on May 21. Until then, tell your friends that the Kingmaker Adventure Path is coming to Game on Tabletop next week, and next year to your gaming table!

Want to talk more about Kingmaker? Join us Friday on Twitch at 4:00 PM Pacific time as Creative Director James Jacobs speaks about the history and story of the Kingmaker Adventure Path.

Well, this is certainly a welcome surprise. I'd like to see more Adventure Paths make the transition to second edition.

Provide stats for both 1e and 2e, and I will happily pay $100.

2e only = $0.

It's ironic if they'll be more willing to support a competitor's 5E than their own 1E product.

Yep, I have the Rise of the Runelords and Curse of the Crimson Throne collected editions on my desk right next to the Kingmaker softcovers, but as soon as it said "Pathfinder 2" my interest level went to zero.

I do have to second this especially with 5E getting in on the action.

I hope this comes to 1e, as absolutely none of my groups are interested in 2e.

My feelings exactly. Unless the final 2e content is effortlessly backwards-compatible with 1e, I'm going to have a hard time committing to this when I could just stick with the dozens of other 1e APs and modules I own that don't require conversion.

So this is basically a thirty-party publisher that Paizo has hooked up with to handle the conversion and printing?

That third party is a crowdfunding platform, not a publisher. It's the same platform Ulisses Spiele uses for their German Pathfinder crowdfundings.

The 5e support is actually a super smart idea. It gets 5e players looking at a PF2E product and more importantly seeing how awesome Paizo's adventures are, so that maybe they'll think about getting into the system they don't have to convert.

Yet, Rise got an anniversary hardcover.

Same with Curse of the Crimson Throne.

I see zero reason why Kingmaker shouldn't get a 1e anniversary hardcover, as that was the addition it was released for.

But, also have a conversion for 2e PF.

Was Kingmaker originally published for PF1E or was it one of the last APs published under 3.5? Rise of the Runelords and Curse of the Crimson Throne were both originally released for 3.5; the hardcovers were conversions to the Pathfinder rules.

I'd rather see the 3.5 APs get updated to 1E first. But I doubt we will see such a thing given they have to focus on 2E.

Kingmaker was the second adventure path published for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game (right after Council of Thieves).

Pathfinder (it was the second published for PF1, after Council of Thieves).

But it was fairly early on, so it was mostly stuff from the Core Rulebook and first Bestiary. A few things from Bestiary 2, which came out around the same time, but I don't think there was any APG stuff.

Both hardcovers for Rise of the Runelords and Curse of the Crimson Throne were NOT for editions these APs were originally released for. They were originally published for D&D Third Edition, and the Hardcovers were conversions to the current edition of Pathfinder.

Will there be conversion rules for Eberron? Because if not, I'm never playing 3.5 again and will tell all my friends, and they'll never play again, and then you'll go out of business, and your children will starve, and I will walk by you lying in a pool of your own vomit and misery and spit on you and yell "SEE HERE, ALL YE WHO DO NOT SUPPORT THE ONE TRUE EDITION, THE FATE OF ALL WHO DEFY ME."

But then I'll feel bad, and maybe buy you some coffee and a sandwich and we can talk about why you're too obtuse to appreciate that Eberron is, was, and always will be the pinnacle of gaming.

Thanks, Michael and Jason.

+1 for the idea of adding a 1E version as a stretch goal anyway - if Kingmaker gets the same treatment as ROTRL and COTCT, it will be meaningfully updated beyond just the rules set, so why not make the update available in a PF1E version along with the other game’s 5E?

It's not ironic, 5E surpassed PF1 in sales and popularity a long while ago. The diminishing returns for releasing anything collected hardcover for PF1 would be way too high to warrant the investment. PF1 is commercially over. The latest big Kickstater by Kobold Press, Empire of Ghouls AP for 5e, doesn't even have PF1 as a stretch goal.

Because PF1's dead, baby. PF1's dead.

And what Malk_Content said about pinging PF2 on 5E players radars.

I believe the reason why it is 2e instead of 1e is just timing and gaming management. they are doing 2e because the entire pathfinder department is transferring over to 2e, no looking back, no regrets. It's difficult when as a company you say "Try our new game system!" when you are still providing for the old one (which any adventure path compilation always does, look at CotCT's Blackjack for an example).

It's being done both to give respects to one of their most successful adventure paths while also giving it the rules update to keep it with the most up to date(as when the product releases) version of the game.

Here for the 5e support! Seems like a good way to make some money on your ap catalogue by providing ways to make it easier to run them in 5e.

If the companions from the crpg are being added I am curious if that means we will be seeing a magus, inquisitor, and kinetisist class pretty soon as their is a companion of each of those. Especially interested as the magus has an archetype that makes him cha based, not int based.

Where is this podcast, pray tell? The more we can see how the community has made similar conversions, the better we can incorporate their good ideas into the wider release.

Along the same lines, I've started a thread here soliciting feedback on what content from Owlcat's CRPG the community would most like to see adapted to the pen-and-paper version of the game. If there's a sub-plot, NPC, encounter, or wilderness area you'd love to have appear at your table, let us know there and we'll work to incorporate what we can from the most popular requests.

Hmmmmmm. Well, I suppose that means the kingdom building rules will have to be updated. I guess that's nice.

If there's a stretch goal to get 1e in there, I may pledge. Otherwise, pass.

Will the PF2 version not be getting a bestiary as well or is that just because the monsters will be in the regular bestiary?

I interpreted that as the AP-specific monsters being included in the encounter blocks with standard Bestiary references for the monsters appearing in that book, as normal for Paizo APs. The 5E bestiary seems like it would be so you can just drop the stat blocks for all the monsters that don't already appear in the 5E Monster Manual directly into the encounters as you're running the adventure, so that presumably it would be no more difficult to convert the book to 5E than it would be to convert it to PF1.

I would love to have a hard copy of Kingmaker to go next to my copies of RotR and CotCT.

Not going to happen unless there is a 1e version available. Paizo wants my money, they need to print their books in system I will be using.

They're looking for our input on what more they can do with Kingmaker.

Seems like a lot of people would like to see a 1e hardcover for this. Here's hoping it's heard!

This isn't a surprise, since PF2e is much closer to other5e than it is to PF1e. It's a flat system. I mean, feats are basically gone, and skills are gutted to make room for "skill feats" to do everything so it looked like feats were still in the game. The customization's all gone, your character's decided at first level by class and that's it. No organic growth or interesting builds. (I know, there's all the class specific feats -- but that severely narrows the system. I'm using for-argument hyperbole, but not much.)

It's smart, business sense, for them to release this AND ONLY THIS! for 5e so that it can get some people over to the better (but still not great) product.

I'll get in for 1e, but I don't plan to adopt 2e until a long while down the road when it's been hacked and fixed. But at least the PF2e rollout is being handled better than the PACG2e rollout, where they're not even calling it a new edition even though it totally is.

A really modular approach would be to remove the stat blocks from the main text of the adventure entirely and issue separate bestiaries for each supported system.

Advantages:

- The main text would be easier to read when it's not split up by stat blocks.

- Having the stat blocks in a separate book would reduce flipping back and forth while running the adventure, because you could keep the adventure open to the encounter area, and the bestiary open to the relevant stat blocks.

- You could have PF 1e, PF 2e, and D&D 5e bestiaries.

Disadvantages:

- It would definitely increase the costs of production and printing.

- It might increase shipping costs, due to extra weight.

When it comes to Kingdom Building rules - I really hope you will include guys over at Legendary Games. Jason & the Gang wrote most of the AP and those rules after all, but the Ultimate Plug-ins for Kingdombuilding and Mass combat is what I find most impressive!

I really miss "boxed sets" from older things that did this. Better than a hardcover, give me a boxed set that's the ADVENTURES all together (even done up in the 6 separate bits), but have a separate bestiary -- including *all* stat blocks, not page turning back and forth, and all maps (all!) in a separate booklet too.

Thanks for the kind words! We're certainly proud of the work we've done with kingdoms and mass combat for PF1, 5E, and now for Starfinder too, and we have something big cooking in that department that we'll be announcing later this month. I'm sure we'll be very interested in kingdoms and warfare in PF2 too!

As a PF2e product this is on my radar and I may back it. Kingmaker was one of my favorite APs. Unfortunately none of my groups are certain if we will be switching over to PF2e.

If PF1e info is included for any expanded content then this definitely makes the must back list.
