Despites some people's opinion on Reddit, you cannot parry a nat 20
In Pathfinder, when a Swashbuckler uses "Opportune Parry and Riposte" against a natural 20 attack roll, the parry attempt automatically fails, but the Swashbuckler can still make the riposte if they have panache points. The natural 20 attack roll means the opponent's attack automatically hits, regardless of the Swashbuckler's parry attempt's result. However, the Swashbuckler can still spend a panache point to make an immediate action attack against the creature, even if the parry itself failed, as long as the attack was a melee attack, and the creature is within reach.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
Opportune Parry and Riposte:
This Swashbuckler deed allows them to spend a panache point and use an attack of opportunity to attempt to parry an opponent's melee attack.
Natural 20:
In Pathfinder, a natural 20 on an attack roll is an automatic success, meaning the attack hits, and if the attack was a critical hit, the confirmation roll also succeeds.
Parry Failure:
Despite the Swashbuckler's attempt to parry, the natural 20 overrides the parry, causing it to fail.
Riposte:
Even if the parry fails, the Swashbuckler can still make the immediate action attack (riposte) as long as they have a panache point to spend and the target is within reach.
Automatic Hit:
The natural 20 means the opponent's attack automatically hits, so the riposte attack is essentially a separate attack, not a counter to the original attack.
No Crit on Parry:
The parry itself is not an attack roll that can critically hit; it's an opposed roll to see if the attack misses.
so the parry would prevent confirming the crit as you crit a confirmation roll.
