Ah, so about that. You will bring everything back, and my boss has hired a third party appraiser to asses the value of each item and you are more then welcome to bring your own appraiser should you be leery of his trustworthiness. After all items value has been addressed, division of the items will take place. Since you will be assuming the most risk…your bodily health being adventurers, the split of the value will be 50/50 between himself and your group as a whole. If there is a specific item that you wish to have then that market value will be deducted from your share. For example, if the total value of all the items was 1000 gold, and an item you really wanted was 250 gold, you would get the item plus 250 in gold coins to make you whole at the 500 gold piece split value. I am hoping that make sense.

He takes a breath, as he knowns that a lot to take in and process. He then takes a sip of liquid from a small flask. He looks around to everyone, and gives a slight smile.

Mara smiles and nods. "Indeed it is an interesting offer and I understand the terms. Unfortunately, the value of the goods in this location are a great unknown and may not prove worth the risking of our lives and limbs, not to mention our valuable time." She taps her chin thoughtfully. "I would like to add an insurance provision to the contract, which we will get in writing of course. If the total value of the goods retrieved does not exceed 250 gold pieces, then we will take the entire haul."

She grins and laughs sweetly. "Now of course, if your client is as confident as they seem that there are valuable goods present, this stipulation will make no difference to them. It will simply help eliminate the anxiety of some of my more anxious colleagues."

Zen'Zot listens and at Mara's comment ponders out loud, "What if there are no valuables, or this structure does not even exist, that could be a lot of valuable time wasted and potential risk endured for absolutely nothing gained. That does not sound all that appealing either."

Well, Vincent has said this might occur. How about this, since I understand your apprehension of the unknown. He has authorized such a counter offer. He is willing to give you each 75 gold pieces up front, totaling 300 gold pieces. He feels this is adequate compensation for your attempt to locate said mystery structure. This compensation will also be the ‘cover’ fee just in case the valuables found do not total the 250 gold pieces you had proposed just now young lady. Is a fair agreement, should I put it in writing?

Gilthanis gives you a smile as he extends his hand in agreement.

I shall draft up the written agreement, including the last known whereabouts of the alleged structure and have it ready tomorrow. You may leave as soon as you feel comfortable, but Al ways the sooner the better. Until tomorrow

The rest of the day goes by uneventful and the morning comes. Around 7am, Gilthanis walks back in, papers in hand.

As promised, a written agreement for this adventure. Feel free to look things over as he pulls out a small coin pouch which flighty jingles. He empties the coin pouch as you see 30 platinum pieces scatter into a small little pile.

The agreement is straight forward, as it lists your group as the employee, Vincent Del Sol as the employer. Length of employment is temporary, on a case by case basis. The 300 gold piece equivalent is payment for undertaking the search and catalogue request as well as potential lack of location and acquisition. The last known whereabouts of the structure is in the Cairnlands approximately 3 days horse travel north by northwest from Absalom, it was seen at dusk, but not upon sunrise.

Zen'Zot nods to Mara and goes back to work.

At the man's return Zen'Zot listens and at his final comment looks pointedly at Mara, Karita, and Uwe to see if they had noticed that significant detail but he says nothing and hopes none of the others do either.

OCC:Was going to make a comment but I will wait until the guy leaves.

So it's the 30 platinum or half the haul, whichever is more, right? Just want to make sure I understand the deal as I thought it was going to be before agreeing to it. Also, I'm assuming that he came to use on our last day of downtime so that we might go adventuring after the agreement at 7 am?

Male Dwarf Cleric of Torag 2 (Artifice-Industry) / Wizard 2 AC/T/FF: 17/13/15 HP: 33/33 F: +6 R:+3 W: +9 Init: +2 Perception: +3

OCC: I thought the 30 platinum is in addition to whatever the fair share of the haul might be. Since there is no guarantee that there will be a haul. Thus the 30pp covers the basic expenses and then if there is a haul that is above and beyond those basic expenses. Aka we get compensated to go out and look regardless of what we might find. If we find something we agree to share it with our benefactor rather than just keep it for ourselves. Mind you that is not something the benefactor would even know about since they are not there so they are also paying for our integrity in this matter.

The 30 platinum is to have you go investigate. Should you find something, the 30 platinum isn’t factored in. So if you found 2000 gold…it’s 2000/2=1000 value for both parties. And yes, he visits you on last day or two of downtime so you start this adventure fresh

Vincent presumes integrity and honesty will be both ways. Checks can be made at any point loot division is made, by all parties involved

Sounds good! While Mara is a schemer, I doubt she'd try to cheat on a contract in a way that would be a big risk to the shop's reputation.

Mara nods and accepts the paper. "This is acceptable. We will be in touch, likely in approximately one week." When the group meets up, she is attaching her banner to her longspear and nods to the others. "We'll meet the cart and leave that fellow, whatever his name was, in charge of the shop?"

"Aye, he did a good job during our last excursion." Uwe said in agreement.

You leave Lashley in charge of the shop while you are away on the expedition into the Cairnlands.

He gives you a simple nod, as his 2gp/day fee is no doubt be covered as you paid him promptly the first time.

You head out towards the Cairlands, where innumerable amounts of broken weapons, armor and gruesome battles have taken place. You meet a group of bandits whom you easily dispatch of about 7 hours outside of town.

As the sun begins to dip below the horizon on the first day, nothing appears in front of you nor in any visible direction as far as your eyes can see. You begin to wonder if this was a fools errand…but you press onward in the morning.

The next day is too uneventful, as you spot a caravan heading towards Absalom from up north, as they exchange greetings and pleasantries.

You decide to make camp in hopes to see if the structure makes an appearance or if your fears are confirmed. The sun begins to set, once more. As the sun crosses the imaginary plane and dusk creeps in, a structure appears about 2-3 miles north of your camp. The tower reaches towards the heavens, as the natural light casts a eerie glow around the structure.

OCC: Keep in mind that ole whatever his name is (Lashley) ;-) has not stopped working for the shop. He has just transitioned from running the shop in our absence to workomg with Zen'Zot in getting a Metalworking shop set up in the basement -- a rather slow process due to limited resources in that direction but will gitter dun soon enough.

"Ah that would be Lashley, Mara and I concur Uwe he is a good man. I will let him know of our plans so he can be ready to make the shift."

As the tower appeared Zen says, "That is what I guessed would be the case based on that last comment that guy made about the tower's sightings." Zen thinks about this phenomenon and asks, "So any one have knowledgable about anything like this?"

Uwe and Zen’Zoth have both heard that a tower appears randomly throughout Absalom. Some have claimed that is a sister tower to the Spire of Nex, which can be seen from any hill in Absalom. The Spire is a mile-high column of smooth grey stone located 10 miles north of Absalom in the Cairnlands. It holds dozens of pocket dimensions, which Nex used to draw countless creatures from numerous different realities to aid in his war effort. The spire is so tall that it can be seen from nearly all of Absalom's city districts, and along with the Absalom Lighthouse, the Blue Tower, and the peaks of the Kortos Mounts, the Spire of Nex is among the most recognizable parts of Absalom's skyline.

The tower before you has had reports of allegedly being in other spots within the Absalom continent, but there is no factual evidence to support such a claim. The tower has only been confirmed to be within the confines of The Cairnlands, and a dozen or so adventurers have tried to gain access to the tower, but they have all failed. No deaths have been reported based on attempted entry, and if anyone has gained entry…it’s been unknown if they have exited the tower.

Mara scans for magic and has Xerxes fly around looking for openings.

Detect magic

Xerxes perc with darkvision 60: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

Uwe, you call upon your magic, and you scan the area for fiendish presences and luckily nothing shows up on your scanning.

While you can for fiendish entities, Xerxes flies around the tower as Mara scans for magical auras. The whole tower shows up as magical, which goes into the various theories and legends you’ve heard. Upon focusing upon the magic is so powerful that Mara cannot handle the strength as she freezes as he body is overloaded with magical and sensory overload.

Xerxes flies to the top of the tower, and circles around the towers upon their descent. They see multiple windows, but they all appear to be decorative in nature, carved out of the tower not an actual window. There are 4 gargoyles perched about about way up the tower, one on each corner of the structure. Luckily…none of the gargoyles spring to life upon the tasty snack which is Xerxes.

OOC: So this is it a square tower then rather than a round one? Anything visual about this tower that stands out.

While his compatriots scan for other things Zen'Zot approaches the tower to get a closer look at its construction and such. Was it natural, or magical in its construction? Is there a door on the ground level to allow entry and what does it appear to be? As well as anything else Zen'Zot might notice with a closer examination.

The tower is a square-ish base that tapers as it reaches upwards. The tower itself is about 90’ tall at its tip, and you presume that there are a good 4-5 floors based on basic dimensions.

Zen’Zot you look closer at the structure. It appears to be natural stone, nothing precious like quartz or obsidian but basic stone. There appears to be a door on the southern facing side with 4 precious stones deeply embedded into the door. They make a diamond pattern; with a ruby up top or ‘north’, a sapphire in the ‘east’ slot, an emerald in the ‘south’ slot and an aquamarine in the ‘west’ spot. Each stone is equidistant from each other along the diagonal axis/line.

Does this door have a doorknob or something that would indicate how to open it? I'm wondering if these stones are a puzzle but without more information, I have no idea what the premise of the puzzle is.

Mara looks at the stones and the door from a little distance.

Is there a check, like a knowledge check, or something to know more about the significance of these stones?

Female Human Witch 4 (Seasons-autumn) AC/T/FF: 17/13/14 HP: 26/26 F: +3 R:+3 W: +5 Init: +4 Perception: +7

Karita wanders over to the door and the strange pattern. "This puzzle seems to have four stones. For four of us perhaps? Shall I poke one?" The witch leans close, her cat in her arms. Kavius reaches towards a stone with a paw, but she leans back before her familiar can touch them.

Mara as you look at the stones, they glint in the little moonlight that comes done from above. As you stand a little bit away, and away back and forth you notice something peculiar…it seems like there is a magical pocket, which extends about 2 feet outward from the tower where there is no air. It’s not that you cannot breath, but rather air doesn’t flow within that ‘bubble’.

do you get closer to examine

Karita, you too feel the lack of flowing air within the ‘bubble’, but it doesn’t affect your ability to breathe. You investigate the door with your cat, and as you get closer you breath washes over the door. The aquamarine stone lights up as your breath hits it.

Female Human Witch 4 (Seasons-autumn) AC/T/FF: 17/13/14 HP: 26/26 F: +3 R:+3 W: +5 Init: +4 Perception: +7

Zen'Zot walks over and looks at the door as well and ponders the layout of the gems. As he is doing this he notices that the aquamarine gem lights up which he finds semi-surprising. Although it might answer his delima that he was having. "What did you do Karita do you know? I mean my superficial study of this seems to imply that the ruby which is red is associated with fire, the emerald which is green is associated with earth, and the blue sapphire and the light blue perhaps with a greenish tint aquamarine would then be associated with air and water. I am not sure about those two as both have been associated with water but a greenish-blue is more water like than a straight blue. But the lighting is not good enough to discern whether the aquamarine is just light blue or a light bluish-green. However, I am assuming something you just did caused it to light up. Knowing what that might have been could answer some of our questions."

Female Human Witch 4 (Seasons-autumn) AC/T/FF: 17/13/14 HP: 26/26 F: +3 R:+3 W: +5 Init: +4 Perception: +7

"I breathed on it." The witch muses. "If each is attuned to fire, earth, water, or air, then that makes some sense. My breath is air, and I am Windborne. Perhaps each of you can supply the other elements to open the way." The young witch considers tentatively.

It IS weird that acid and earth are kind of associated in pathfinder.

Mara laughs and waits to see what results. "That IS simpler!" If Karita's plan works, then Mara will light some dry vegetation with her flint and steel and hold it up to the ruby.

Mara and Karita use a bit of normal ingenuity and the two stones light up as it took basic elements to unlock the magical door…irony at its finest. As the final stone alights, a white outline appears on the wall, in the shape of a door. The actual door itself seems to shimmer in the moonlight as the door itself is magical.

And if it is not obvious that thing in the upper right corner is a drain and that thing in the bottom left wall is our mysterious door.

As fare a discord goes. I am not providing or using it because I generally post from work, which does not allow us to use it. They block, Google docs, roll 20, anything with the word game in it, discord or any other chat app, and no cell phones. Some how, the paizo boards have slipped by. I'm guessing our I.T. guy is a fan, LoL.

Never ask questions lol. Just walk away and pretend nobody knows :)

I cannot edit it unless I’m using a wrong program lol

Its posted in my google docs and is listed as anyone with the link can edit. That said, I'm not sure what they mean by edit. (Shrug) If you intend to edit the main image, you will probably need to download it and use something like 3D Paint. Aside from that, you might be able to drag and drop other images to the existing image. Say something like a desk. Then size and place the desk like a toke? Not sure how this plays out on a different PC. I know when we used maps on google docs, everyone was able to place and move tokens.

I click on the link you provided and it brings it up as a png file not a Google file. Maybe I can just download the image and drop into my Google slide file.

That should work. It is a PNG image. I was thinking players could download it, add or subtract what they want, and then post their version online. Once we have something that everyone is ok with, then you could simply add it to the header as the store's main floor.

Note while I like what you have done with it to a degree you did change the dimensions of the building and I also understand why you put in carpet (its easier than fixing the floor) even though that would be an extreme thing to have since rugs would be about all that we might have but a bare floor is easier to keep clean since you do not have to take the rug out and beat it clean of dirt and dust periodically. Yeah we have magic to do that but still rugs would not be common with wood floors as they were used in places where there were stone floors to reduce the cold radiating from the stone.

Aldric if you can give me full sized images of those objects you put in the store I can go about adjusting the original store to contain those. Yeah for ease like you I would change the floor but I did that for the basement already in preparation to adding in the workshops we are putting down there.

(Sigh) Ok this has gotten to be way to encumbering. I think I'm going to bow out. I will leave the image incase you decide to use it in some way, but I've spent way to much time messing with this. I wish you all the best of luck on the business.

Bow out of the game Aldric or just the making of the room?

I hope not the game as I like the character you created makes a nice balance to the group.

I'm standing down from the game for a number of different reasons. That said, recreating the room repeatedly has been a chore. Each iteration required a time sink, which in hindsight never would have been acceptable. There will always be some small critique that ultimately ends up requiring a timely redo.

In response to you asking about the change in the building. As stated before, I changed the corner of the building because the diagonal didn't work with the copy past mechanic, which tends to highlight things as a rectangle. Although I'm sure there is a way to accomplish a triangle copy past, I simply didn't wish to spend additional time learning the process. It was easier to simply change the room into a square. Ultimately this headache is my fault. I attempted to add something to the game that I thought everyone would enjoy and it became a time sink. Now, the process is yours. Enjoy! Hopefully the others like what you build, thus you only need to create it once.

The images for the things I added can be copied from the room itself. There were never independent images of these things. I simply copied them from other floorplans, that I downloaded, and then pasted them to the image.

Have added in the Alchemical Workshop/Show thoughts and/or suggestions welcome.

Also added in part of the office but might change that as I think the desk blocks the access to the counter. Will adjust.

Sorry to see you go, Aldric!

Similarly, I often feel like we're getting SO bogged down in the details of something that isn't even part of the published downtime rules. I would enjoy the game more if it felt more like we had a set, motivating goal from the GM which we were pursuing according to clear rules. Some examples:

We thought we were starting with downtime then switched to this adventure instead? A little whiplash.

I'm still not clear what downtime rules we'll be using and when we'll be doing adventuring or downtime.

Bye Aldric! I hope things are going well for you.

Okay…so I take full responsibility for not having a clear set of rules or anything. My overall goal got big and out of control for my intended purpose and like I said that’s on me.

• First off….does everyone feel comfortable enough with the basic DT rules as per Ultimate Campaign? What I mean is, the rules for gathering Goods/Labor/etc or would it be easier to make it an entire GP system. I’m pretty sure that the normal rules will suffice and be able to be managed well enough.

• Secondly, I pivoted to a quick adventure while I nailed down the DT rules as to ensure I was well prepared enough to get into the system when I do get it going.

• Third, I am going to go back to basics…as I bit off more then I could chew as I didn’t KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid).

• Fourth, I am going to scrap the map, as it has caused multiple issues. I wanted there to be a finite amount of space…so I might just go theatre of mind or simply say either yes or no to future upgrades. I don’t know quite yet how to solve that issue.

• Fifth, after this quick adventure, we will be going into a Downtime set.

• Sixth, DT and Adventuring is supposed to be interchangeable and flexible to a certain degree from what I’ve read. If/when you want to adventure then it seems like you either hang a ‘closed sign’ up or hire an NPC to keep the basic checks going. Or if you would like, we can have a set Adventuring schedule like the 3rd week of the month…unless a random event changes things up (?)

If anyone else, in all seriousness having issues which being overwhelmed/confused/concerned. Please speak up, :)

I think standard DT rules are fine and keeping it simple sounds great. And interchanging adventuring with downtime also sounds great. Just tell us how much downtime we have ahead it comes up. :)

Male Dwarf Cleric of Torag 2 (Artifice-Industry) / Wizard 2 AC/T/FF: 17/13/15 HP: 33/33 F: +6 R:+3 W: +9 Init: +2 Perception: +3

No no that is so wrong it is not Keep It Simple Stupid as that is soooo negative K.I.S.S. is Keep It Simple and Smart. No one is stupid they are just not as smart as they could be if they put a bit more thought into is all ;)

I am fine with things but I might be one contributing to confusion (maybe?) as like you I am trying to hammer down the DT guidelines per how they are written to better understand how they are going to be used. I think it has a solid base from which to work from but need to translate all the bits and pieces into something simplier to grasp.

I was also the one that suggested that we slip a quick adventure into the mix which at least one other player agreed to -- in order to allow us to better iron out the DT wrinkles so that once the adventure is done we will hopefully have a better full understanding of the DTs we are using and then slide into and out of DT much easier.

Mara Thorngage wrote:

I would try my best to give you X days or X weeks of DT chunks as per the feel/flow of things. Example: if an Adventure would require you to be away, I’d let you estimate or roll in an attempt to figure out how long you’d actually be away from the shop.

Also, I may roll multiple ‘event rolls’ to see when things happen (?)

Nor was it taken by me in that fashion -- I was just hoping for an adventure besides just meeting a Dryad and getting some wood ;) Ya know something we as a group can sink your proverbial teeth into and get to know our characters and each other a bit better kind of thing.

It kind of hurts that we lost our primary fighter and operations man but maybe the GM will let me higher a NPC/PC character from the Oremite family to be our operations manager and perhaps another to be our fighter.

Or maybe one of you has a friend to fill those rolls? Or we get another player that wants to fill one or both of those rolls.

Mara everytime I see your avatar I see the concept of you character so nicely portrayed its nice they had that one for you.

So bartering/trading is more then simply goods. It can be knowledge/goods/time/labor/etc. so just because I’ve thrown a “barter curveball” I’m hoping hasn’t caused the game to come to a standstill :)

while bartering and trading can be lots of things ;)

I hope not a standstill but Zen'Zot did just asked the Dryad what she might be wanting because Zen'Zot has no clue what a Dryad might want as he thought they had everything they needed.
