About Mara Thorngage

Backstory:

Mara woke in the Coins, forgetting who she was or why she was there. Several unfamiliar halflings looked down at her with concern. They found her knocked unconscious in an alley and took her home rather than leaving her to the dogs and worse. Thankful but confused, Mara got to know the close-knit Caskgrip family that took her in. The clan made a living in the Coins off of confidence games, stealing from the rich, smuggling, and the like. Unable to remember much besides her name, Mara shrugged and fell in with their ways.

After a few days, Mara was reading a novel and pronounced the name of one of the characters aloud "Xerxes". Much to her surprise, a violet, bird-like creature with arms popped into the room out of nowhere. He bowed and greeted her "It has been a long time mistress. What would you have of me?" Flummoxed, she confessed she had no idea who he was. The bird-fellow explained that he was her extraplanar ally whom she had learned to bond with and summon. When she asked to know more about her past life, Xerxes gave her a cagey look and shook his head. "I think it better if you discover things for yourself, one bit at a time." But the eidolon was willing to remind her of a few other tricks she knew, summoning other assistants from the Outer Planes.

These tricks, her winsome smile, and the fact that she wasn't a halfling all proved very useful to the Caskgrip family. They kept her adoption into the family quiet and used her to fence some goods. When the opportunity came to invest in old Bartleby's shop, they staked her. Why not have a permanent, convenient front from which to sell lucrative but slightly-less-than-legal goods?
