Kitsune Kune's Fists of the Ruby Phoenix

Game Master Kitsune Kune

The Ruby Phoenix Tournament begins! The sorcerer Hao Jin has returned to Tian Xia to host her decennial international fighting tournament, and contestants from all over the world have arrived to try their chance at winning a prize from her vault of incredible treasures. Before they can compete in the tournament, however, fighters must first complete a series of qualifying challenges on the uninhabited tropical island of Bonmu, where wild dinosaurs roam amid the ancient ruins of a lost civilization. Can the heroes defend their island stronghold, outlast their many ruthless rivals, and survive the perils of so-called Danger Island? Let the competitors decide!

Envoy's Alliance

Hello all, starting recruitment here for a Play-By-Post of the entire Fists of the Ruby Phoenix AP. All players will get Society Chronicles as well.

A few rules for character creation: Ancestries will be limited to the Standard Available Ancestries for Society play. (In otherwords, all the core, and Kobolds.) With the exception that Tengu, Ysoki, and Kitsune will also be available. (It's Tian-Xia after-all).

Heritages will similarly be limited to Standard availability of Society play, with the exception that I will also allow Aasimar, Tiefling, Changeling, or Duskwalker characters.

Backgrounds, I am looking for people to use the ones specifically in the player's guide.

Starting Equipment: If it affects you concept at all, we will be using the first way mentioned in the guide. AKA: "select two 7th-level items, one 8th-level item, two 9th-level items, and one 10th-level item from any of the common items listed in Chapters 6 and 11 of the Core Rulebook or in other Pathfinder sourcebooks. You also start with 500 gp, which you can use to either buy additional common items such as consumables or which you can keep as currency to use during the game." All equipment is, again, Standard availability of Society play. The exception being, if choosing Tian Xia as your homeland, you treat Kusarigama, Leimano weapons as Common, and thus, have access.

Feats, Classes, Features, Spells etc. Once more, standard Society availability, no exceptions here.

Party Size: I will be sticking to only 5 players. (Sorry all). Just because PbP can take a long time to get through turns as is, and high level can too at times.

Time Commitment: Speaking of time, I will be expecting people to post at least once a day, every weekday. (Saturday and Sunday will count for either Friday or Monday for this.) I cut out the weekends, as I, personally, am often too busy on the weekends to ensure I can post, and will not have any expectations on others to be able to do so when I can't. If you are unable to post for a day, have basic botting information given to me. if not, we'll have to skip you, and nobody likes being skipped. (If you know you will unavailable ahead of time, I will happily also bot your skills etc. should they come up). Posts don't have to always be giant book-long posts though. Sometimes someone has little to say, and that's fine. Just help keep things moving.

Further, the week of Christmas and Thanksgiving, I will respond to posts and normal, but have no expectations for players on those weeks. (It's the holidays, enjoy your family time. :) )

I will be using Roll20 install of google-slides or the like, for the maps. (I have more storage space etc. in roll 20.)

All that said, for me to choose my four players, please provide the following information below.

Character/Player Name: What you like to be referred to as. Just so I know how to refer to you if chosen.

Character concept: The more information you can give, the better, but it doesn't have to be a fully decided character. After-all, party composition can affect some choices.

Good luck, and whether you are chosen or not, happy holidays.

Horizon Hunters

I would be interested.

Would love to join in. I plan on running this myself sometime next year with my gaming group, but would love to sit on the player side first.

I already have a human monk theory crafted. I would take the second chance champion background, if allowed. So that would change up his story a little bit.

He is a strait ki user, meaning he does not use any of the monk stances, unless it has a ki component.

I originally had his backstory of him just travelling from monastery to monastery challenging others, just to prove himself to Irori. That just Irori's teachings of perfection was all he needed, not any special schools of martial arts.

But, a fighting tournament is better, right?

Radiant Oath

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'd like to play Monessa Calfire, a Half-Orc Champion (redeemer) of Kofusachi. Probably second chance champion, trying to recover a relic of her faith.

Sovereign Court

I'd like to join with a kitsune Attention Addict Swashbuckler(Battle Dance) looking for his missing elder half sister he's never met and the hoping to get famous enough to be noticed.

Is Free Archetype in effect?

Second Chance Champion is, indeed, allowed :)

Sadly, it is not. In general, assume creation rules follow the basic core book rules, except where defined differently in my large wall of text.

Dark Archive

I have this former character in PFS1E that I could update, a fey sorcerer.

I'm definitely interested, this AP looks like a lot of fun. I'll have to look through the player's guide a bit to try and get a character idea going, but it'll probably be something heal/support-adjacent, bard is pretty likely.

Very interested in trying a hand at this, would be most interested in playing an Aasimar Cleric of Irori, with some Monk dedication worked in to stay true to the nature of the tournament.

Specifically a support character, with access to buffs and healing, though will likely have some damage to throw around depending on the various scenarios his companions will find themselves in.

Probably going with the Undercover Contender, having lost his sister to foul play ten years ago he decided to infiltrate the tournament to preserve and protect the integrity of the competition in accordance with the precepts of Irori, the Master of Masters.

Hi! Would it be okay to apply to this even though I’m also GMing a Ruby Phoenix campaign? I won’t do anything metagamey, just want to see what the experience is like from the player side.

You may of course still apply for it. Besides, I have a tendency to tweak paizo's APs some. As I often find they just didn't have the page space to fully flesh out something or other that I want fleshed out.

As such, this won't be exact experience of the AP as-written. It will be close in most respects, but there will be surprises.

If someone is selected who plans to run it later wants to make use of any of my surprises, Or do something similar of their own.. I will happily make my notes available to them.

Envoy's Alliance

As an fyi to all applicants.

Application due date is Tuesday, Midnight, Eastern Time.. I will announce those chosen the following day. So anyone interested that hasn't yet. Get that character concept in here before then. :)

I would like to apply with this character, Zathra, an Osirian summoner and her phantom companion. She was previously selected for a Ruby Phoenix game in which the GM vanished before we even got started, so she should be good to go for this one! Hoping to get a chance to actually play her!

I'm going with the Undercover Contestant background for her.

Full Backstory:
Zathra grew up in the Half-City of Wati, so named for the vast necropolis that takes up a large portion of its area. She was only a teenager when the actions of a cult of the Sky Pharoah Hakotep unleashed hordes of undead into Wati's streets. Separated from her friends and loved ones in the chaos, Zathra fled from the undead and found herself holed up in the long abandoned tomb of an ancient warrior. She thought she was done for when a gang of ravenous zombies discovered her hiding spot, but to her surprise, a hawk-headed spirit manifested in the tomb to defend her, slaying the zombies and saving her life!
The spirit belonged to the warrior Tarik, whose undying anger against those who had wronged him in life kept him bound to the mortal world. Due to some strange quirk of fate, a powerful link had been established between Zathra and Tarik, bonding the pair together.

When the undead uprising was finally quelled, Zathra emerged from the necropolis with a powerful protector and a newfound purpose. She would dedicate herself to exploring ancient tombs and ruins to find and put to rest as many wayward souls as she could. Over the next several years, the young woman began to garner a reputation not only for her bravery and selflessness, but for the combat prowess of her guardian eidolon.

Upon learning of the upcoming Ruby Phoenix Tournament, Zathra decided to undertake the lengthy journey across the world to Goka to join a team in the hopes of winning the grand prize. She hopes that somewhere within Hao Jin's legendary vault might be a powerful artifact that can help her finally help Tarik pass on to his long-delayed reward in the Great Beyond. And in the meantime, she has agreed to be on the lookout for any nefarious characters trying to influence the tournament. Its legitimacy shall not be compromised!

Nice work, looks a fun character. That said, there are two things that a quick once-over will need changing if chosen, per the build rules I listed up in the intro post.

Those two things are:
8th level feat: biographical eye is not of standard availability for society play. So would need swapping out.

Your listed handwraps are listed as greater striking, which are above purchase level, and don't fit the equipment build method I listed above.

Just figured I'd point it out, in case making those changes would, somehow, be a deal breaker for you if chosen.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Ah, thanks. The rules here are slightly different than the other campaign I was accepted into.

I'll change my skills so that Deception is master and Society is expert, and swap Biographical Eye for Doublespeak.

I'll redo my equipment now, as well.

Sovereign Court

Applying with this character. Took the Second chance champion background. His backstory also includes some adventuring, cause that only makes sense at level 11. I did buy some guns, but put a note in there saying, only if PFS legalizes in time, otherwise I just take them out and give back my guy the gold. (Seriously Pathfinder society, hurry up and legalize guns and gear, I have agile maneuvers and want to give my guy a air repeater which is an agile ranged weapon).

Character name: Highwire

Concept:
Highwire is a non-binary wellspring gnome from Jalmeray, who believes in striving toward personal excellence as a worshiper of Gruhastha. They travelled the world in search of new experiences as a circus performer for several years, before returning to Jalmeray to study at the Monastery of the Unfolding Wind. Having reached what they feel is the most to be gained from monastic study, they now seek to push themself to the limits.

In combat, their emphasis is mobility, using leaps to disorient opponents and get into optimal positions with allies. For years, their closest companion has been a multi-colored squirrel familiar, named Zagnut, who acts as a meditation focus to help Highwire maintain the flow of ki energy even during the most harrowing battles.

From a build standpoint, my initial concept was a Monk with a Student of Perfection Dedication, but if we have other Monks in the group the concept could work well with a Swashbuckler as the initial class, with the Student of Perfection allowing access to focus spells/ki powers. I was picturing the Acrobat background, but if wanting to use one from the player's guide, then Attention Addict might also work.

Grand Lodge

Hermit mysterious Kitsune sounds like an idea I've been having. It says Oracles are not as common but I think that would be cool. They'd be like Zhuge Liang.

Name: Kojiro
Ancestry: Human (Versatile)
Background: Attention Addict
Class: Magus (Inexorable Iron)

Haven't settled on finer details yet.

Character crunch is mostly finished in Pathbuilder. If selected is it cool if I reskin a maul as a tetsubo?

I am going to withdraw interest, if only because as I look at my character, I realize, as much as I love PF2E, I find it difficult to get *into* a character at 11th level, and would much prefer to see the character grow and progress through those lower levels.

Anyways, I will likely watch the thread, because as a kid of the 80's growing up on martial arts tournament movies, Enter the Dragon, Blood Sport, Mortal Kombat, and innumerable others, it is a fun and exciting trope!

Good luck and good gaming!

I give you the Fair Lady Ōtsuka Zhilan, traveling advisors throughout the courts of Tian-Xia. Based somewhat on Zhuge Liang of Three Kingdoms era China but with more the wuxia bent.

Envoy's Alliance

So, as we come into the last three days of recruiting, the characters posited are as follows:

concepts:

Atae=???
Zd = ki monk
Ace of moxen= half o4c champion of Kofusachi
Muzuoka=attention addict swashbuckler looking for lost sister
Okuru=converted 1e fey sorcerer
Ollie-twist=???
Arcee667=???
Zathra=undercover human summoner
Max Gain=second chance half-elf fighter
Azjauthor=attention addict gnome monk or swashbuckler
Blackocato=Lady Otsuka Zhilan, kitsune oracle and martial artist.
Elbowtotheface=attention addict human magus

Also, yes, I know this list ignores a lot of your provided backstories. Don't worry, I read them, and am balancing them as promised. This list is just short hand.

For simple reskins, I'm fine with that, as long as mechanically it functions the same.

Name: Reklu Gor

Background: Second Chance Champion

Concept: Reklu is a Kobold Draconic Blooded Sorcerer and champion of the Kobolds. He is tired of his people being viewed as sad and pathetic wastes of space and sees the Tournament as a way to inspire his people and show the world that Kobolds are to be FEARED! He tried to compete a decade before when he first began his adventuring, but he failed early in the Tournament and he has sworn to return and show the world that Kobolds are a vital and powerful race. The second time is the charm!

Good afternoon! I would love to play in this game. I have created the following character with this AP in mind.

Vystral is a Half Elf Rogue(Mastermind) with Dandy, Eldritch Archer and Monk dedications and the Newcomer in Need background from the AP.

Hwang Vystral:
Vystral always believed he was destined for great things. Spoiled by his parents, he never wanted for anything as a child. He became a politician as soon as he was old enough to get noticed, quickly climbing the ranks. It’s amazing how quick that can be if you know the right people and you’re willing to be corrupt. So it was for Vystral.

But then there was the incident with the Ambassador’s daughter. And the misappropriated civic funds. And the diamond tiara. His fall from grace was fast and he damaged his family’s reputation too. Vystral had a change of heart. He sought redemption. So, he travelled, embraced the arts of his father’s people and became an adventurer. He has a second chance now. The tournament. Let the games begin!

Vystral is fast, clever and witty. He never looks like he lacks confidence and only very rarely does lack it. He knows how bad he used to be, and that people can change. He wants to win so his disgrace (and that of his family) can be properly put behind him.

Vystral has a Tian Sing human mother and a Vourinoi Elven father.

Pathbuilder link His equipment should also include a Wand of Cozy Cabin.

Thanks for considering him,
Mr Tea

I'm still working on the crunch for the character, but I've got enough fleshed out by now to get him submitted. Sorry in advance if the backstory's a bit long, I can get carried away with the writing sometimes.

Player Name: Ollie
Character Name: Jingyi Zan
Background: Newcomer in Need

Backstory:
Jingyi Zan is a scoundrel - sardonic, perpetually tired and often drunk, and a fixture of Goka's seedier districts. He makes his living as a swindler, a conman, and an occasional pickpocket, but those who pay attention will notice a particular trend in the pockets he picks; those belonging to the cruel, the cocky, those who exploit the people around them. He may insist to anyone that will listen that he is as selfish as they come, but his actions reveal a man who can not help but to give aid to the needy around him.

Underneath all that, though often obscured, he is an artist and intellectual, passionate about his music and about gathering knowledge. Left to his own devices, by now he would likely be a renowned songwriter, performing in courts across Golarion. Unfortunately, fate rarely leaves people to their own devices. In Jingyi's case, his Tiefling heritage manifested, and his elven family turned him out into the cold without a second thought. The boy, gentle and meek as he was at the time, would likely not have lasted long on his own, had he not met Masako.

Like him, Masako's unusual heritage had gotten her cast out from her family, but unlike him, this Aasimar girl was a strong-willed and capable fighter, willing to do anything it took in order to survive. Jingyi was enamored with her immediately, and before long, the two were inseparable. She taught him how to shoot a bow, how to steal and to hide. He taught her how to learn from her opponents and from their surroundings, how to leverage her knowledge to her advantage. It was no surprise to him when she announced that she had found her way onto a team for the Ruby Phoenix Tournament, and wanted to know if he would join her. He had no interest in making combat such a public display, but he would cheer her on from home, and promised that, when they met again, he would marry her.

Imagine his surprise, then, when she never returned. Despite everything he thought of her, she never made it to the end of the tournament. She never even made it out, having been killed by an opponent barely halfway through the games.

This was years ago, now. Long enough ago now that even the most ardent fans of the tournament have forgotten Masako's name, and long enough ago that the magic needed to pull her back from death would be beyond Jingyi's reach. But an artifact from that vault? He's spent the years since Masako's death preparing to finish what she started, and he is determined to see her again, whether that means finding the artifact to bring her back or dying himself.

Like I said, I'm still working on the crunch for the character (all I have left is spell selections and equipment) but I've been working on him over here on Myth-Weavers if you'd like to give him a look over. I'm still pretty new to 2e, so I'm sure there's something I'm still messing up.

I'm mostly finished with this elf magus with the Undercover Contender background (though it's possible to switch it to Second Chance Champion without much effort if too many people take Undercover Contender. The background was originally Second Chance after all). She will have the Sparkling Targe hybrid study and mostly use a whip to deliver her Spellstrikes.

Here's the background: Forty years ago, Bwessara fought in the Fists of the Ruby Phoenix tournament. After losing in the qualification rounds, she vowed to return. As she watched the rest of the tournament, she became convinced Volio, the man who defeated her, was cheating. Thus, she also vowed revenge. After the tournament, she tracked down Volio and beat him severely. Volio claimed he had been paid to cheat by a gambling house. Bwessara was

As the next tournament came closer, she realized she wasn't ready especially knowing that someone would likely cheat. She decided to change her fighting style completely. She spent twenty years learning arcane techniques to deliver magic spells through weapons. For the past eight years she's been adventuring to gain enough experience in combat and increase her notoriety to earn an invitation to the tournament. It worked because not only was she invited to the tournament, but she is working with the organizers to uncover the cheaters who will tarnish the tournament. There will be a familiar face at the tournament: Lovolio. True he is too old to fight now, but he will be watching his daughter Maudrine compete. Bwessara hopes they face each other at some point.

Player Name: cmlobue
Character Name: Daraj l'Bayal

IC background:
Daraj is the son of an innkeeper form the Mindspin Mountains, not far from Kaer Maga. he developed an interest in cooking early on, and by the age of 50, he was already performing most such duties at the inn. He loved to experiment, and one day, an experiment went a little too far while he was staring into the flames.

While the debris cooled, he was cast out for a century, and he headed southeast to live out his exile, and hopefully learn some useful techniques so that when he is finally welcomed back by his family, he can be the greatest chef the region has ever seen, and repay his parents' kindness by making the newly-rebuilt in successful beyond their dreams.

He followed the mountains into Andoran, where he was introduced to a professional alchemist who taught Daraj a better way to channel his talents. While he learned how to create stable creations that could heal or harm, he began experimenting with infusing foods with magical power, so people could derive their benefits from something less awful-tasting than potions. Coffee of haste is still a work in progress.

He does not have the look of an adventurer, for while he is skilled making concoctions that can explode, treat wounds or do any number of amazing things, he still prefers to prepare food over bombs. When first greeting a group, he will usually be seen in a flour-covered apron with a tray of pastries, and he refuses to accept that a party needs to subsist on hardtack and river water while on an expedition.

He has a rivalry with a goblin alchemist he was frequently sent on missions with named Lokoloko. Although their games about who can kill the most monsters, and in the most interesting way, usually end in a tie, Daraj won their last match at the Battle of Fort Agate.

OOC background:
Daraj was part of a long-running 3.5 campaign where he had to simulate his true calling as an eldritch knight, and used a couple times here on a PFS number that got turned into something else at 2nd level. The linked sheet would be a base, and Pathbuilder means I should be able to level him up 10 times relatively quickly.

Adding a bit after looking over the player's guide.

Modified Background:
Farewell, Cooking Lore! Daraj received a message while he was away, stating that his parents reconstructed inn was once again in trouble - this time from possible bankruptcy. A drought in the area has raised food prices, and new leadership has raised taxes, and his parents are having trouble making do. Daraj can do little to help directly, especially since his exile is not over, but the reward from the tournament would go a long way to keeping the family inn in business until he is able to return.

Daraj will replace the Cook background with Newcomer in Need.

Partial Proposed Stat Block:
Still have most of the shopping for items and formulae to do, but for some idea what you're getting:

You all are making my decision hard on me. Darn you! shakes fist. But really, good on you, I look forward to this game, no matter who is chosen. For the others... Well, who knows, I might run this again for the S's and G's. I've done so on other AP's before. if I do, I'll reach out and see if you all are interested.

Hard decision, I guess we are doing our job at making great characters.

Finally finished for the most part.

Biography:
Biography:

Nothing is certain about the true origin of Lady Ōtsuka Zhilan, but what can be determined from her own words is that she originally hailed from a small kitsune village on the border of present day Minkai and the Forest of Spirits border. Favored by a Samurai in her early adult age, Zhilan in her youth kept the guise of a fair Minkai woman before her revealing herself to him as of her true heritage. Her husband would not live for long as he would later be killed in the growing conflicts of the territory, leaving her a widow at a young age. This is unproven and no evidence suggests anything of a marriage or anything of that record in the northern regions as Zhilan also claims to have as well been courted by a Hongal merchant on the northern border of the Forest of Spiris.

What can be determined is her firstly appearance, consort to the imperial governor of Sakakabe in northern Minkai, becoming a small figure in the courts before coming to some fame after the slaying of a Chimera at Grey Tooth Pass. It was this sudden event and the reveal of her kitsune heritage that Zhilan name began to grow, quickly rising then through the ranks and becoming an advisory to several provincial courts throughout the region. However this event would have occurred over 50 years ago, with Zhilan’s true age being potentially obscured by the fox woman’s magical nature.

A skilled negotiator believed to divinely be gifted in some form, she has traveled for many years throughout the land, showing herself as exemplary negotiator, known for her beauty and charismatic demeanor. With the Ruby Phoenix tournament, she has been asked by the Goka Gov’t to help deal with potential corruption of the event.

Appearance:
Appearance:

Known for her strange and exotic beauty, Zhilan blends the look of both her Human form of the Kitsune in a strange spectacle of look. Fox ears on her head while a single tail from behind, hiding her true age of a far more rumored four tails, all orange and white in color. Long black hair is tied in a typical Minkai style, Her attire typically favors green.

Envoy's Alliance

Alright, this post will mark the cut-off for submissions. My next post, in probably about 5 hours, will be with final decision on party. Which will be chosen on a function of:

1. character concepts and how much I like them/how well they fit into the AP,
2.party balance,
3.depth of character creation so far (hard work should be rewarded afterall),
4.balance of being prepared against some of the unexpected challenges the party will face (nobody likes a TPK because your party had no way to be prepared for a specific challenge, especially when the GM is picking the party),
5.order of submissions (there is always SOME value to first in first served)

Those things are listed in order of most important to least in its weight on my decision. (For example, the last one about order of submissions will pretty much just have enough weight to function as a tie-breaker when I am too torn on two characters.)

Again, this will be a hard decision, you all gave me soo many good ideas and good party compositions. Thank you, and "may the GM whims be ever in your favor".

Envoy's Alliance

Okay. this was a REALLY tough choice. Truly spent the majority of the time between last post and now debating back and forth. After looking over the party make-ups, it legitimately did came down to first-in-first-served between multiple characters.

The lucky winners of this GM's final answer are: Dramatic music...

ZD and their Monk
Ollie twist and their Bard
Brainiac and their Summoner
BlackoCatto and their Oracle
cmlobue and their Alchemist

Once again, thank you for everyone who applied. The choices were so close that, as much as I have settled on it being the right choice; I know I'll be mentally kicking myself over this a few times still.

Which means, odds of me reaching out to the rest of you for another go when I finish this (or at least first book so I can keep track of tables better) is quite high.

Either way, have a wonderful day all, and a happy Holidays.

Meanwhile, if those listed above could hop over to the newly created Discussion thread. There is a quick questionnaire to fill out there.

Have a fun game all.

Can't say I'm not disappointed but enjoy the game, those who got in.
