Can't wait to see the party formation (or formations... If the GM was to host two simultaneous tables?). With Wings background, I can see he working well with the other "honest bread makers" around here, despite the fact he'd probably sound like an innocent do-gooder :)

This looks like a really promising game! My brother (FarmerBink) and I are very active on other forums (GitP and Myth-Weavers) and will probably put together a pair of PCs for submission.

You are still taking applications, right?

Thanks and good luck to all!

Yes, indeed, there is still lots of time. Though at this rate, I might have to do tables.

... I'm not sure that would work, though. I'd hate to feel as though I would end up needing to drop one, but not both...

Anyways, yes, submissions remain open.

Better one table enjoys the whole adventure than 2+ tables never finish due to DM burnout =)

That's more or less the attitude to take, yeah.

Oh, a shifter. Neat! Your alignment's fine by me, so long as he doesn't act more chaotic than good, I think he should be fine. More or less.

I would ask that you separate the background and normal skills in some way so I can tell which is which - I don't have them memorized, but I do want to be able to count out ranks more easily. Other than that, I like it.

As for the noble house - Sarini is one I would recommend, or Tanessen

I have read, played and GMed Gallows of Madness so I know plenty about House Sarini. I'll take it!

I will assume that Bran and his fellow servants all knew a whispered, embellished version of the Sarini's fall from grace.

Well that's just gonna be...

interesting...
if Bran & Iacobus wind up getting picked.

Aaron Tanessen was a PC with whom I started the first adventure (barely). The DM disappeared and he was shelved after one or two encounters.

I will make some edits to get him in line with your character creation rules, but would appreciate any input you have, Kintargo GM.

I commend you sir, on your fine understanding of the word.

I forgot to put Bran's reason for attending: he is keeping an eye out for his idol. Perhaps she can help him figure out what to do now?!

I will get back to you when I'm more able to. xD

I present my mighty avenger Vigilante, Alexius Vashnarstill. Alexius’ background is sort of an in-character fiction. It’s mostly based on truth as all good lies are, but it’s what Alexius’ wants people to think of him, not his actual background.

He’s a vigilante so he has great social and high society skills. The build I have in mind for him should make him a solid frontline fighter as well. With the Lethal Grace avenger talent at level two, he’ll get an accuracy and damage boost. Since I took the Noble Scion feat, he’ll be using a heavy shield in combat simply because he has nothing else to do with his offhand. At level three I’ll start the Shielded Gauntlet Style feat tree, which give AC and damage boosts to gauntlets. Good AC, good damage.

I’d like to try and keep the other PC’s from knowing Alexius is the Raven, but if that proves to be impractical, unrealistic, or simply unfun, I won’t insist on continuing that way.

Alexius Vashnarstill:

Pic for Alexius
Alexius Vashnarstill is a relatively unimportant younger cousin of house Vashnarstill. Born and raised in Kintargo, he was destined to join the military and fulfill his noble family’s obligation to provide knights to the queen a certain number of months each year. Like all noble sons, he was trained in scholarly topics as well as martial arts, military strategy and so on. The boy was particularly adept at dueling with falcata and buckler in the manner of the Taldans and quickly found himself a rising star in the regions dueling circles. He attended – and won – many dueling tournaments, rubbing shoulders with prominent military leaders and royalty. It was just after one such tournament when the fates changed for Alexius. Returning to the family estate alone after taking first place, Alexius was set upon by three assassins, likely hired by a rival duelist from another noble family. Alexius was able to fight off, but not kill, the assassins, but not before receiving a grievous leg wound. The blade the assassin used must have been cursed, for despite having the wound healed with divine magic, not leaving so much as a scar behind, the young duelist was left with a prominent limp.

Alexius’ military future was over before it had begun. Everything he had been training for was gone. His mother was not too displeased that her son would not be going off to war, but Alexius was. His attitude quickly turned dour and he turned to drink to ease his emotional and physical pain. He had no interest in following his family members into politics or business and spent the nights drinking and womanizing and the days sleeping. At least now he had something in common with the head of the household, Sendi. His family could only bear his loud, drunken rants for so long and they eventually built a small, single room cottage in a secluded corner of their property for him. The increased privacy seemed to suit him, and he spent years partying the nights away.

The closest thing to friends Alexius could be said to have were other bored young noble men and women. They would gather to discuss banned topics and consume forbidden literature, always talking of how much better they could run the city if they were in charge. None of them meant any of it. Those spoiled nobles would be the last to do anything to jeopardize their lives of luxury and excess. While the higher ranking nobility certainly did not approve of these secret meetings (that everyone in the city knew about) there was nothing the royal family could do to stop them without angering many of the noble families that the crown needed to maintain control of the city and the region.

Reason to Protest: Protest the Government! The hellish, Orwellian, soul-crushing curfew placed by the new regime has destroyed Alexius’ social life and while he never drank tea before or after sunset, no one tells him what he can drink or when.

Alexius Vashnarstill is a young chelaxian noble and he looks the part, though his preferred outfit tends to draw the eye; an exotic costume he picked up on one of his oversea trips in his youth. He is tall and slender with trimmed brown hair and sideburns, brown eyes, and usually more than a couple days stubble. He wears black, fitted silk trousers and shirt, black calfskin gloves, a red velvet waistcoat, a high collared black longcoat and a tall top hat. The unusually tall hat and long, narrow coat exaggerate his height and slim figure, lending him a somewhat unnatural look. He walks with a prominent limp and utilizes a fashionable cane, the silver head styled to look like a raven’s beak. He is loud, brash, and selfish, with little patience for anyone but himself. Most nights he can be found closing bars or in bed with some lesser noble’s wife or daughter. He shows no drive or desire to accomplish anything with his life or improve himself in any way.

====================

Pic for the Raven
The Raven stood on the city wall south of the Devil’s Nursery, gazing into the slums below him. He was an intimidating figure: steel breastplate over thick, knee length gambeson; sturdy knee-high leather boots and matching leather gauntlets; a ragged, hooded cloak that almost touched the ground and concealed his head. But that was not why they called him the Raven. A macabre steel mask shaped like a raven’s beak protruded from the hood and obscured his face. Large, flat glass eyes granting vision while protecting the face from harmful vapors or liquids. A Hellknight lay groaning and bleeding on the walkway behind the parapet on which the imposing figure stood. The Thrune dog rolled onto her back, the pool of blood rapidly spreading beneath her. ”You can’t just… let me die.” she gurgles, coughing up blood.

The Raven turns his head to look from the slums to the dying soldier. ”I can’t?” he asks in a thick elven accent. He turns and drops to the walkway, squatting next to the woman. He brings up a gauntleted hand and taps the side of the beak covering his face. ”They say this is worn by doctors in some places. Doctors! I do consider myself a doctor…” He says, his voice casual and unconcerned. A dagger, the handle of which was intricately carved to resemble a large black feather, protruded from the woman’s stomach. The Raven grasped the dagger and pulled it free of the woman’s flesh and armor, increasing her blood loss and hastening her death. ”I can let you die because I’m not that kind of doctor.” He hisses as he lowers his beaked face near to the woman’s ear, his voice trembling with rage and hate. ”You pay for your crimes against that poor tiefling with your life.” The woman’s eyes flash with confusion – no doubt she could not differentiate one tiefling she had brutalized from another – and then the light goes out as life leaves her body.

He sits back on the parapet, dangling his legs over the slums, and sighs, rubbing his face through the steel mask he wore. How long can I keep doing this? What is it going to change. His actions had had effects on the new Thrune regime, but it was too little. Too slow. The impoverished people of Kintargo were little more than slaves, and that isn’t even to mention the literal slaves. He was only one man. He stands, glancing back at the woman for a final time to ensure she was dead. ”I need some friends. A lot of friends.”

I've had my eye on this for a couple of days and have been struggling a little to figure out if/how I wanted to apply. I played the first book or two several years ago with a character I greatly enjoyed. However, I've had kids since then and do not remember any of the major story arcs.

After some soul searching, I've decided to throw my hat in the ring as well.

I'm leaning towards something like a noble bastard son turned vengeful of the system that denies him standing while other (lesser people, in his eyes) wallow in the fat. Could end up either Human or Half Orc.

It might take me some time to finalize the details, but I wanted to post interest at least tonight.

This is Dealan's proposed character, the gnomish Pei Zin practitioner. She would take the life mystery and the plagued curse. My plan is that she would do support and buffing, and eventually summoning and some magical crafting.

more background:
For her entire life, Chao has had problems with fatigue and sleeping as well as chronic pain. Neither the alchemical efforts of her mother nor her father's druidic magic was able to correct it, although the treatment lessens the symptoms somewhat. This focus on her health as she grew up has lead to her developing a fear of catching new diseases.

So I lied about only one thing. I'm going to post a bit more than interest tonight.

Janneh Murray is mechanically complete, except for possibly finding an appropriate way for him to spend about 60g on adventuring gear and/or living quarters.

I've got a nuts and bolts background settled, and just don't quite have it in me tonight to turn it into prose.

*****

He's the bastard son of Count Geoffe Tanessen via one of the household maids (who is a Half-Orc). She became slated to be sacrificed and managed to save him by taking him to a trusted friend. That friend secretly worships Calistria, and took him to a church, the only place she thought he would be safe. They took him in, and readily promoted his fledgling disillusionment, redirecting him to more "productive" outlets and shaping a willingness to do the work.

He grew up very angry, largely unschooled, and with a deep thirst for vengeance against the family that took his mother and the society in which they're allowed to thrive. For a few years now, he's worked as a bouncer in a few less-than-reputable establishments, and word has begun to circulate about revolution. Janneh has always needed little encouragement to fight, so this upcoming protest is right up his alley.

*****

If you're willing and interested, DarkOne is my brother, and we somewhat regularly stay up too late coming up with fun and flavorful stories for our characters to engage. I'd like to suggest pairing our characters (as half-brothers, and less than friendly half-brothers, there's a lot of potential for party tension that won't derail the game). At any rate, I'll get a more thorough, prettier background up in the next few days. Someday, I need to sleep. XD

Dark One

Other than MythWeavers making it hard for me to read the sheet, as I'm not used to the design, etc. it looks fine to me!

Chao Jin
My goodness, plagued is a horrible sounding oracle curse. Setting that aside, it looks good to me.

Farmerbink
With what I said about Mythweavers in mind... looks fine to me!

I feel like it's high time I make a list of current submissions, so prospective new players can see what's happening at the moment.

Note that these are just how I see the classes off the top of my head - not that it's the end-all be-all of what will weigh my decisions.

I keep trying to put something to paper but I can't seem to get anything I like, which is a shame because I really like this AP's idea. I'm going to drop out of it for now though. Thanks for the opportunity! <3

Though Oracles are full casters, I was not imagining Aaron as a caster, really. I saw him more in the same vein as a Paladin - front line combat, tough, and focused on keeping the fight from the back lines.

That said, over time he could certainly develop in that area.

Fair enough! Make note of that, would-be submitters.

K-GM, Shifters are frontline melee fighters.

Hey Kintargo GM, first of all, thanks for running the game.

I dotted back on the 24th, just kind of reading along and thinking about characters. I will be applying with Taldo the tanner, he is a bloodrager with the Celestial background.

A question, do you mind if he's aasimar using the angelkin variant heritage? I would also use the Scion of humanity alternate trait because he wouldn't realize he was actually a different race. I think the race fits the class and backstory well, but I don't want to 'double dip' or do anything to decrease his chances getting in.

I'll include his fluff, I'm still working on the crunch.

Short version:
Taldo the tanner is the youngest son of a well-to-do business man who runs a meat packing plant on the north-west side of town, well actually outside of town. It is near the ocean and the Night road, it is positioned there to be able to process the cattle and old horses that the ranchers from the northern plains of Nidal. Which are known as the Atteran Ranches bring to market. Taldo's father started as a tanner but has purchased the local butcher, glue maker and salt packer.

Taldo is very close to his maternal grandmother, who is a celestial sorcerer and servant of The goddess Milani. She has taught Taldo how to control his temper and hide his gift. She has also told him the history of the rebellion. Taldo's grandmother went missing a week ago, after several inquiries he has heard that a contact with information will be at the rally, and he may be able to provide information to help him find his grandmother.

background:
Taldo is a proud son of the Silver City of Kintargo and Cheliax. His family has been in Kintargo for generations. As long as his family can remember they have been craftsmen, operating in the tanning business. Their original location was on the riverbank in the Redroof District, as the city expanded they moved the tannery to the outskirts of town on the north-west bank, near the Night road to take advantage of the herds coming in from Nidal.

Taldo’s father is a shrewd business man named Toridan the Tanner, who started his business career inheriting his father’s tanner shop but in time he purchased the nearby slaughter house, meatpacking plant, soap making facility leather works and eventually a large upscale butcher shop. Toridan had several children with his first wife who passed away from a lingering disease. A few years later, seeing a business opportunity, he married the much younger Shaela, the only daughter of the well-to-do butcher, Festidious. As Festidious’ only child Shaela and Toridan became not only husband and wife but business partners as well.

Taldo’s older siblings ran the other aspects of Toridan’s businesses and Shaela ran the butcher shop with her father, Festidious and mother Cecile. When Taldo was little he spent a lot of time with his Grandmother Cecile. It was she who, when he was throwing a temper tantrum, learned he was a bloodrager. She taught him how to recognize when he was losing his temper and how to control it. Being a sorceress herself she taught him about hiding the celestial heritage they shared and how to understand spell casting. During the time they spent together she told him about the different groups that had resisted the thrice-damned House Thrune, focusing on Kintargo history. She also introduced him to her goddess Milanite. They spent many mornings in grandma Cecile’s rose garden talking about all of these things. Of course if anyone asked why she kept roses the answer was simple, they used rose petals in the wash water and soap to remove the smells from the butcher shop and tannery.

As Taldo became a teenager he spent a lot of time working and learning the crafts of many of the other business, but always made time for his grandmother. He learned she was not the only family member who served gods other than Abadar, who his father claimed to serve, using their facilities for banking. Most of his siblings worshiped Desna or Cayden Cailean. He became a worshiper of Milanite, but publically claimed Abadar, like his family members. He learned that his grandmother was one of the priestess.

When Taldo was a young man his maternal grandfather, Festidious died, and he began to spend most of his time at the butcher shop, helping his mother and grandmother. He moved from his father’s house and lived upstairs over the shop. Around the same time he volunteered for the “outer-city” watch that many of his family were part of, putting to use the simple weapons skills he had learned from his grandfather and other family members. It was after he moved to the shop that he learned just how involved his grandmother was in other activities; coming home late in the evening or spending the entire night in Kintargo. When he would ask her about it she would tell him that the less he knew the better.

Everything changed after Thrune’s representative, Paracount Barzillai, arrived. That morning of the seventh of Abadius, Taldo awoke before dawn as was his habit, noting that grandma had not returned from the city, as had become her habit more and more. He noticed the odd smell of sulfur, brimstone and smoke in the usual smell of brine and seaweed as the fog settled, but thought nothing of it. By the time his mother arrived to open the shop Taldo became concerned with his grandmother’s absence. Hearing the Devils Bells ringing off in the distance, His mother, also concerned, agreed that Taldo should go into the city to inquire of grandma’s friends to see what was going on.

Taldo arrived near the Opera House a few moments after 7:00, just in time to hear the declarations implemented by the new Lord-Mayor: Paracount Barzillai Thrune. As the city guard and the Dottari began to force the crowd’s dispersal, Taldo was not able to find his Grandmothers friend. He returned home with the oppressive news. Since that morning Taldo has spent the last week carefully asking questions concerning his grandmother and for general news about what is happening. Speaking to each trusted customer he knows at the shop, and in the evenings going into the city to different establishments to hear word of what is going on in the city.

appearance:
Taldo’s physical appearance, like so many Chelaxian, is a subtle and attractive mixture of heritage. His height, light brown hair worn in a high ponytail and blue eyes reflect the Ulfen heritage that occurs here more in the north than in the south. While his pale skin, thick bone structure, prominent brows and high hairline receding into a widow's peak clearly points back to his ancient Azlanti heritage.

When Taldo is about town he dresses to suit a well-to-do craftsman, properly displaying a bit of the leather work his family does. His doublet expensive spit leather dyed in maroon, His broad leather tooled belt with matching riding boots, a fine linen shirt and lambskin breaches. When you approach close enough the only smell is the slight hint of rose .

When Taldo is at the shop or about shop business, the finery is put away. He wears a heavy leather apron over his heavy double lined hide jacket. Heavy work boots, sturdy cotton work pants and shirt, usually seen with knife, cleaver or hammer in hand, depending on the job he his is doing. The smell is no longer roses but blood and offal.

When Taldo rages his features take on an other-worldly appearance. His skin appears white and luminescent, an iron halo appears above his head, his eyes turn deep blue-black and his shadow is cast with large feathered wings.

personality:

Taldo is the perfect merchant’s son; a combination of hardworking, industrious, organized but also affable, outgoing and engaging. Because of his bloodline he has learned self-control and patience. Thinking before he acts and weighing every decision. He is proud of his cheliax heritage but desires, above all else, freedom.

On the Myers-Briggs scale Taldo would be:ENFP - The Campaigner

Enthusiastic, idealistic, and creative. Able to do almost anything that interests them. Great people skills. Need to live life in accordance with their inner values. Excited by new ideas, but bored with details. Open-minded and flexible, with a broad range of interests and abilities.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I don't mind the variant aasimar/tiefling things, honestly. Scion of Humanity should be fine by me, as well.

IME, shifters are usually combatants.

Gotta say, Oracle seems a whole lot less likely to pull off front-liner than a dedicated self-buffing Cleric. Maybe I'm missing something. It happens. A lot.

Reworked the background last night, but didn't expand it much, yet. Got most of the way through building the class write-up as modified by archetypes, too. Now I can intelligently work the build mechanics. Started looking at feats. This could be a seriously channel-focused build!

Extra channel from archetype. Selective channel out of the gate. Purifying channel at 3rd, which damages one of the individuals excluded by selective channel. The Milani-specific channel feat at 5, which gives a morale boost to everyone healed through channeling. And even more which I don't remember off-hand.

Reviving channel is one I was looking at as a character saver. Burns a channel for exactly one target, but it heals them up to 0 HP BEFORE applying the channel healing! But it comes even later. More Extra channels could become pretty important pretty fast, too.

Liberty's Edge

@Kintargo GM: The Raven is CG. I would make a profile for both of them if chosen.

I find when evaluating an Oracle you must consider their mystery and selected revelations. A Battle-mystery Oracle is going to be much, much more focused on melee-style combat than a Lunar-mystery Oracle, for example.

Aaron has Heavy Armor and Martial weapon proficiencies with the Martial Flexibility ability of the Brawler. He's built to be in melee (with the exception of the Medium BAB, which he addresses with Divine Favor and similar buffs).

A Battle Cleric with similar intentions would be functioning much the same way at level 1. From that point on the devil is in the details - how do the two PCs develop and what choices do they make as they level up? But at this level he's pretty solidly front-line capable, by design.

Kintargo GM
I'm trying to base Chao Jin's curse off of fibromyalgia. IRL, seems like it's quite a challenge. Mechanically speaking though, plagued is pretty tame.

Kintargo GM, I'm looking at the AP traits, will you be permitting the 'Leadership feat'?

At the moment, I have no opinion on the Leadership feat, but that's largely because I have no experience with it. It might require more ability/attention than I can give, but I'm open to considering it.

Thanks, ends up being a mute point for me, went with 'Historian of the Rebellion" I figure stealth will be more beneficial. Will have Taldo posted soon.

Wow, the fighty-type applications have really mushroomed since a few days back! Maybe I should have worked harder to figure out a witch!

I was kinda tempted to take a swing at a Seducer myself when you set it aside, tbh. However, building a proper mental interference-specced Seducer calls for tweaking the charm hex (since it's a useless dead weight RAW) and then reaching accord with the GM about how mental interference works in various cases.

Stabbing people just felt like an easier option XD

I am always willing to work with players to figure out how things work. :P

As an aside, this is one of the APs where a Mirror Witch wouldn't have much trouble with her familiar mirror.

Dot. Interested in a Wizard, but we'll see.

That's where I arrived as well, stabbing. :p

Aside from the Charm Hex, there's the problem that Seducer doesn't change in-class skills or boost skill points to compensate for the switch from INT.

Mirror Witch does look good for this AP, yeah. Vellemancer witch would combine with Mirror and is okay. It at least adds diplomacy and sense motive as class skills.

Well, the Charm hex issue is that it tries to be two things and ends up being neither. Since it only improves attitude by a step or two as if via Diplomacy, it's useless in combat outside of some extreme edge cases - usually the situation would be volatile enough that so affected opponent would immediately turn hostile again. On the other hand, it could be grand in social situations... except social interactions last much, much longer than 'rounds per Int mod'. So what it needs to do is either render enemies charmed (which locks the enemy at 'friendly' unless attacked) or last 'concentration + rounds per Int mod', which would allow one to sustain it through a conversation.

As for mental interference, basically the question is, which mind-affecting spells are subtle and which are blatant? As in, say a character succeeded at casting a mind-affecting spell undetected, and the target fails its save. In some cases the target then will fail to realize they've been affected, even after the spell runs it course (like with Sow Thought, for example), while in others it'll be immediately obvious their mind is being attacked (like with Command or Dominate). In which category do Charm and Suggestion spells land?

Lots of questions there. In many cases, using any spells is pretty obvious - hence the verbal and somatic qualities. People may not recognize what spell you're casting (though that probably makes it worse, honestly), but unless it's silent and still, (or one or the other, if it only has one of the two components) the spell's blatantly happening.

There're ways, I think, to disguise that you're casting a spell, but off the top of my head, I cannot remember where.

The hex is something that I'd be happy to discuss if anyone were actually making a Seducer witch, because yes, that does seem to do basically nothing.

That’s a daunting number of applicants!

No, no, you're speaking of casting the spell. There are ways around that, like metamagic, Conceal Spell feat and some others I don't remember off-hand.

The question, however, is about the effect itself. When a charm spell expires, does its target immediately realize they've been charmed, or do they still need a 'reason to doubt' and then to successfully make a sense motive check? What about suggestions? Memory modification?

Right, I was pointing out how difficult it is to conceal the spell in the first place, and thus, how rarely that will come up. But if it became prominent, I would make a meaningful ruling on it. :P

That said, I think it would vary by context - just off the cuff.

Scarab Sages

The replacement Hex that troubled me was

Seducer’s Kiss (Su): At 6th level, a seducer can kiss another creature as a melee touch attack. The target must succeed at a Will save (DC 10 + half the seducer’s level + her Charisma modifier) or be staggered for 1 round. If the target is (or could be) sexually attracted to the seducer, the save DC is increased by 2. If the seducer and the target have had willing sexual relations in the past 24 hours, the save DC is instead increased by 4. Whether or not the creature succeeds at this save, it cannot be the target of this ability again for 1 day. At 10th level, this ability causes the target to become stunned for 1 round, then staggered for an additional round. This is a mind-affecting charm effect.

I could see this being useful in an AP like WftC because there's so much social interaction, with entire non-combat encounters (or book chapters) as part of the action. Lines between friend/neutral/enemy can be blurry and are fungible if handled well. I don't see as much potential for it in Hell's Rebels though. I don't get the impression there's a lot of hanging around with Thrune's people socially.

It would be crazy to try to use it in combat, unless ranged touch attacks (blowing a kiss?) are possible with it. Otherwise it needs to be set up, it's a trojan horse Hex.

I don't want you to start spoiling things of course, but I am more or less right about the limitations?

More or less, yes. There's... actually at least two or three occasions where that might actually come up... but not as many as in War for the Crown, definitely.

I like it. It has wonderful flavor.
I may be late to the party; but it seems viable in combat situations to me.
Am I missing something? Other than trying to kiss a Bone devil.

Scarab Sages

It's a super cool concept but....

It's a touch attack for a 1/2 BAB class made with the class's dump stat unless you use a feat for Weapon Finesse. The DC would be solid so it has a good chance of sticking if you land it. But, until 10th level when it stuns rather than just staggers, you will be vulnerable to counterattack, and lord help you then.

In short, it's fine as a ranged effect, but super risky for just 1 round of staggered. After 10th it's a little better, but not 10th+ level good compared to other hexes.

It seems to me like Seducer is an awesome NPC archetype for creating a frenemy-type character who messes around with the party, sometimes a help and sometimes a hinderance. Always with their own agenda.

Details, details; spells fix everything...lol.

Misfortune plus that seems quite powerful against single foes reliant on 5 attacks.
This coming from a Monk submission!

Ok, this is RH's Aasimar Bloodrager, Taldo the Tanner. I believe everything is in order, GM please let me know if I can answer any questions for you.

Bran is correct it is a daunting number of applicants. Good luck and good gaming all!

I don't envy the GM the choice ahead.

Me either!

Oh.

Wait.

Man, I can't wait to be on the other end of this choice some day. Seems actually relatively relaxing.
