No problem everyone, I went ahead and went with everyone, as it was only one more then I was hoping for and it means more monsters to throw at people.
So You all are all coming to Phandelin, the same city in the Starter kit, poor guys, and all have different reasons for coming.
Its a frontier town looking for worthy adventurers to help them out as they hope this group of adventurers were as worthy as the last.

Like I said this an introductory module for me as a DM. I am using it to get comfortable with the rules and see how the modules pan out for characters and the group. Hopefully this grows into a homebrew adventure in my own world which I plan to go from 1-20,
This one will go from 1 to 6'

Brother Gaelin |

I am excited to give the 5e rules set a spin, so thank you for hosting this game. A couple questions:
1- I opted to roll for wealth. Do I still get the starting equipment and gold from my background, or does rolling replace all of that?
2- Is there any equipment that pretty much everyone takes in 5e that I should get?

![]() |

I will ser the scene tonight after work. I was gonna try to find my booklet and give you all rumors but I am interested in what specific ideas you can come up with to get you to phandelin
As for the starting equipment, as far As I have read you still get the background equipment.

Scramsax |

Typically you don't get the startup stuff if you roll, but not really a big deal I'd say. There isn't really any must have equipment, the startup packages are usually perfect (and a better deal) to be honest (unless you are a hexblade warlock apparently ;) ).
For Scramsax, I wanted him to be a local already embedded somewhat in the criminal scene (history is like knowledge local in 5e). He steals uncut gems from the mines, cuts/polishes them and sells for profit. Being a massive drunk though, he has recently blown his savings on a bender.

Brother Gaelin |

My apologies, I was traveling and the Android 10 update messed up my data access on my Pixel 2. I've been trying to sort it out, still no luck, but I am back home and have access to a stable device once again.
The healer has reached the tavern.

Loraas |

Hey GM:
Just a suggestion... you may want to roll initiative for everyone and just tell us the order of actions.
In theory, none of us could really affect the initiative roll so you may as well roll it yourself.
Since you asked us to post once every 24 hours, you have to assume that, every time you ask for something, 24 hours go by.
IMHO, you want to minimize all of these delays as much as possible.

Scramsax |

DM, just another note, feel free to completely ignore of course...social checks aren't by default opposed rolls in 5e. You just set a DC using DM judgement. That said, I know a lot of DMs that still do it that way, with the opposed insight roll.
With the initiatives and combat tracking, its also helpful during combat to post a sequence with who is currently up and still needs to act. Most likely, your players are not tracking it and expect you to know and tell them...so something like:
Round 2:
Gaelin, Scramsax, Lucen <--- UP
Manticore (intimidated)
Valeth, Adrian, Dusk
You can write it after rolling initiatives then just copy/paste/edit for subsequent posts.

Loraas |

Good idea. I will have to make a document with all the initiative rolls and use them.
More friendly suggestions... :)
Lots of DMs, write out these initiatives in the Campaign Info tab so you don't need another document.
You may also want to write out perception rolls as well.
Like Scramsax said, just trying to help out but feel free to ignore.
Game on!

Scramsax |

So Critz, what do you think of your DM experience so far? Anything you think you need help with?

Scramsax |

Yeah, I love how it gives the appearance of being a simple system at first...but yet there's still enough there when you really get into it to whet the tinker appetite.
One other unsolicited piece of advice, if you can stand it, when DMing pbp just always try to move things forward or offer something new in each post. Its up to you to turn the wheel and advance scenes when they need to be. When I DM I try to make that my goal with every post...move forward or offer something new.

![]() |

Yeah the moving it along online is one of the more fundamental issues I am having to work on. Mechanics are a bit easier so less stress on me. I think when I get to more things I myself have made I'll have more stuff to pull people in, for now, I am just trying to use a published to get the feel.

![]() |

So with the brief periods between holidays how are you liking the adventure so far, any other tips you might wish to float my way are accepted.
I have been looking over some things I have in my downloads and found a HUGE dungeon crawl that maybe what I try for next possibly Rappan Arthuk for 5e

Sir Adrian Fullbright |

I have been through it as a player and DM, but I would still be interested.
As for the current game. I am enjoying it, alot. You are making great progress. Stay after it.

Scramsax |

Yes, I'd say be proud Critz...many games do not make it this far.
My only complaints are that the dialogue was a bit hard to understand recently, but I assume that's because the gnomes are bat s!#% crazy. Also, I wish there was activity on weekends but I know not everyone is down for that.
But yes, it seems things are sweeping right along and the opportunities for party RP abound.

Loraas |

I'll echo what everyone has said; you're doing well.
The work involved in GMing a PBP is a surprise to many.
I would like the game to move a little faster but that takes everyone. You should 'lead the charge', but we need to follow.
Try what Scramsax suggested. Try to make at least one post per day that moves the game along and let the players know if they are not keeping up.
Game on!

I agree this is a different species of gaming animal in trying to DM online.
Weekends, as I have found out, are always a little weird as people have free time from work to do other stuff, as well as home games.
Yeah the dialogue when it comes to Gnomes, especial 'Not-Tinker' Rock gnomes is always gonna be a bit weird as they are like more concerned for the science and what they can build instead of the social graces. Its something I tinker with personally is to try to make the races have a distinct feel in manner and speech. I just hope with gnomes you can follow it!
Also if any of you can find Essential Kit maps, I would be grateful I am having issues acquiring them for online use and my copier is well broken. So if you find maps for me that would be great.

Scramsax |

I have the maps. Share a google doc or something and I can drop them in.

Loraas |

Scram you find no traps [no need to roll] AS you ascend the stairs you eventually come to the top and see immediate to your right a hallway and a corridor that continues straight.Which way do you go
Just another tip for keeping these games moving. Here's how I handle decision where no information is available to make the difference.
-----------
which way? right or straight?: 1d2 ⇒ 2, straight
Scram you find no traps [no need to roll] AS you ascend the stairs you eventually come to the top and see immediate to your right a hallway and a corridor that continues straight.
Seeing as you have no way to differentiate between the two directions, the party continues going straight.
As you continue straight...
-----------
You want to minimize the times you ask questions from us that a) you could answer or b) we have no info to make a difference.

Scramsax |

Indeed. I didn't even see your post asking me which way to go for almost 8 hours.

Loraas |

Hey GM (and players),
I'm going to respectfully bow out of this game.
Nothing wrong with the game, but I just can't seem to maintain interest in a game that moves at this pace.
Thanks for your time and good luck in future games.

Ðusk |

Hi GM (and players),
Following Loraas' suggestion, I am also struggling to remain focused on my character and the game, and rather than be a hindrance or 'tag along' I too will be bowing out of the game.
Thanks for the opportunity, wishing you all the best for the game.

Scramsax |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Alright, I suppose I will follow suit and depart. I think the other players stopped posting a while ago, except Adrian. Might be time to just call it closed and reflect.
Its tough sometimes to keep momentum going without it feeling like a railroad, but in pbp you really gotta just be more forceful with information. Stuff that might take 2 seconds in a RL game takes 2 days, etc.
Requires more than just 1 word or 1 sentence posts from the DM to really work, imo. A dungeon crawl like this gnome hideout scene, if I was running it I would just write up every single detail and skill challenge for each room in a single post. Let each player respond/act, then move to next room post etc making way through.
But had fun, and thanks for giving it a shot. :)
