Thank you for opening.
My backpack ideas came from looking at the pregens (which help with themes as well). I saw the old lady's food and thought the herbs and spices would represent that as I figure cooking is scut work to a wizard. I also recalled you saying things could be used to enhance spells so that is four of the other items. If I recall from reading the rules we would pick three items each day to have ready and could use.

Hello from South Florida (Sarasota 'area').
I own a small business here and during the day I can usually find a few times to come here to post. In the evenings, not so much. There will be times where I'm so busy running the shop -- or stressed and exhausted afterwards -- where I'm just not able to get here for a few days. I usually Post a notice. Fri-Sat-Sun are usually my free'er days; sometimes that means I'm here for practically 72 hours straight. Other weekends it means I won't be anywhere near here as I'm doing more free'er stuff.
I've wanted to play this AP since it first started coming in the mailbox every month -- you can imagine my sorrow at getting the last few issues of Dungeon and restricting myself to only 2/3s of the magazine, avoiding Spoilers for the AP I really wanted to play.
Alas, I know a few of the Spoilers. I will PM the Master of Ceremonies (pretty sure I'm gonna usually say "DM" instead) the little bits that I know. I also did get a chance to start playing this AP via PbP several years ago. But we only got, like, two encounters or scenes into it before the DM ghosted.
Anyway, glad to be here. Very much looking forward to roleplaying with everyone!

Hello from South Florida (Sarasota 'area').
I saw you mention you were in Florida the other day and almost asked where. Now you've answered my question. I lived in Gainesville for about 17 years before we moved to Charlotte, NC. I started RPGs while at UF.
My Dad has lived in Sarasota for... almost 50 years. I used to know it well.
I take care of my 2 special needs boys so I am mostly in and out of the boards. Depends on the day and what is going on. Don't expect too many morning posts from me though. :) I read on my phone but I will only post from the computer if it requires formatting. It's too much of a job on the phone and this is supposed to be fun, not work.

Kesnet |

Re: Kesnet in Sasserine:
My thoughts were that Kesnet’s mother lives in a bordello, and Qesnef was a customer while magically altered. Kesnet’s mother loved her ugly baby, so the young lad grew up with a dozen aunts, and was useful to have around - first as a hardworking and surprisingly honest scullery labourer and then as he…filled out/up, bouncer/muscle. A short stint with a mercenary company (I pretty much imagined something eerily similar to Archpaladin Zousha’s “hiring vignette”) in pay of the Sea Princes helped him learn weapons and a little seafaring. He is on furlough and probably smashed some unwelcome heads to save a poor helpless soul in view of the plot’s employer.
So in the dodgy part of town, Kesnet is a minor celebrity/known figure/local identity. He’s friendly, can obviously handle himself and doesn’t treat with fools gladly. Elsewhere is Sasserine, he’s pretty much persona non-grata.
I guess he might also have a theme of “Ghetto Superstar”, with “Ear to the ground”, “Favours Owed” as Power tags, with a negative of “Double Aaaaaagh!?!?!” that occurs out of the ghetto, but I feel Annelise might have all that too…Depending on which quarter Annelise is from, they’ll likely know each other…

Svetozar Lanezra |

Annelise could be a link that threads us together. Of course, the DM has said that none is needed.
But if Annelise is still okay with Svetozar Lanezra's introduction -- she could pull me out of 'the fire' along with anyone else (an ogre-like or maybe a cat-like) who may be in jail.
I'd like Svetozar Lanezra to awake in a mildly confused fugue state, a little aphasia quickly fading away -- but naked on a street in Sasserine, a Reincarnated Hellbred. If that can be next door to the orphanage where Annelise volunteers, she can have me thrown in jail while I stutter through an incomprehensible apology.
Annelise is also good at Sense Motive so if she decides to give me 'a second chance' at some sort of explanation -- and we go from there.
Other PCs could have been jailed -- or also friends of Annelise who she asks to give her back-up when she confronts me for a 'second chance.
I dunno, something.
Maybe later Svetozar Lanezra agrees a penance by cleaning garbage from the street, some kind of community service. That could also be where he gets starting money to buy a weapon & armor.
. . . .
I don't know how much from 'Skull & Shackles' or 'Serpent's Skull' will appear but the Amedio Jungle around Sasserine and the mountains to the west are perfect for those two APs to have cameo appearances.
I briefly saw earlier a question on commonality of Tabaxi. If it's still in the air, Tabaxi could either be common in the Amedio Jungle or very rare and you came from far to the east (Hepmonoland).
Also, not too far from Sasserine is Cauldron where Gnomes are practically the norm.

Milton McMurray |

Milton saved some farmers bringing food to market outside town one day while looking for his master. They were attacked by a large cat after the beef they had. Some shielding, some burning and they had cat meat to sell too. He made note not to shop at their stall.

Just to let you know, I've got a rudimentary set of tags up in the Recruitment Thread!
And now we are seven. Counting the Narrator. Which I do.
A lucky number, so...
if you haven't created an alias, please do so. If you would, please put the 4 themes in the "race" bar on your alias... that will help me immensely.
If you haven't told me about your recent adventurous escapade, please do. Svetozar, I know you're looking to be brung in on the strength of sheer nudity (and Annelise) but we don't want to have Svetozar have to stay 500 yards away from any schools, so... maybe he's able to find some sort of banana hammock before he makes his appearance?

Annelise Wykes |

@Archpladin Zousha - your tags "Not the Face!" and "we don't ka-frickin boom here" are genius! They tell me exactly who your character is better than a whole paragraph of description could ever do :)
Also, I like the "New At This" tag. You might have picked a lock under controlled circumstances but there probably aren't many of those where we are going.
@Svetozar: tbh you're probably lucky the watch was nearby because Annelis' first instinct would not have been to arrest you. I think later on though when she sees you were obviously distressed and not (as she first thought) drunk or high or menacing, she would use some of that newfound compassion she's trying to work on to come and see you in prison and at least make sure the guards have found you something to wear. She'd also listen to your story if you told it, and it's too unbelievable to be a lie so although she has serious reservations about your sanity she is inclined to believe you, or at least believe that *you* believe you're telling the truth.
As you may hav realised from my posting times I'm based in Europe so you may need to wait for me sometimes because I'm not online at 3 am.

Annelise Wykes |

I've no idea if it's a reference, to me it means their magic isnt about fireballs.

I don't expect things to go so fast that different time zones are going to mess with anyone. In fact, it's probably a good brake.
Again:

Once everyone has done this, we can begin!

Svetozar Lanezra |

I can change my greeting with the group, no biggie. I latched on to Annelise's 'Piercing Green Eyes' description and (I forget how she worded it)-- Excellent Sense Motive Tag really early on (it may even be different now) and thought it was a good place to propose a start.
I still like the idea of like, The Terminator appearing randomly in the street somewhere in town naked, dazed and confused. Like I'm Kyle Reece dropped in an ally to try to save Sarah Connor.
So,... something like that is how I came to Sasserine, Reincarnated as an adult.
And from there I'm open to whatever, but maybe something like this:....

Svetozar Lanezra |

Svetozar Lanezra awakened as an adult, reincarnated from Hell, somewhere in the northeast corner of Sasserine. Still disoriented, nearly to tears in confusion and terror, he finally began to shake off a mild fugue state, a little aphasia quickly fading away, open his eyes to the salty city around him, and get arrested.
Thrown into jail.
He was naked -- a grown man with a creepy visage and a vile tattoo on his forehead.
Rubbing the fog from his eyes as the city watch slammed the bars of the gaol in his face, stuttering through an incomprehensible apology, his Crucible had begun. His Salvation seemed impossible.
But by chance he had initially been found by an artistic poet of Lirr and a lyrical musician of Lydia, near the Shrines to those beauteous goddesses. So after Svetozar Lanezra was thrown into jail based on their shocked testimonies, the two acolytes visited him in kindness to answer their curiosity: Why he was there and who was he. Reminding him of Shelyn, a goddess he knew better, he was touched by their kindness and he tried to explain. With their help, he was released under the condition he would perform deeds of community service (once the Lirr and Lydia artists provided him with clothes).
Svetozar Lanezra was tasked to do tasks under the watch of the Temple of Mayaheine, in the corner of Sasserine south of the Shrines of Lirr and Lydia. This was an absolute blessing for the Hellbred, as Mayaheine was about as exact of a copy of Iomedae as he could imagine; listening to the Paladin-Priests of Mayaheine was a mirror of Paladin-Priests of Iomedae.
And on his free time, he never failed to visit The Historian’s Guild so close to the Temple of Mayaheine, and also to return to where it started, helping in thanksgiving to tend the shrines of Lirr and Lydia – and of course visiting Highwall House (the legendary Sage), the House of Lords (perusing records of the nobility and history), The House of the Dragon (Sasserine’s grand library), the Cartogropher’s Guildhouse, and even The Curious Chimera (bookstore).
But when he discovered that the tattoo parlor, Callisto’s Needle, was also a repository of Lore of the Planes and Cosmology, Svetozar Lanezra returned as often as he could.
In time, he is hopeful that the Temple of Mayaheine will task him with a great quest. For now, he spends his time studying and reading – and hoping to hear of a great quest that could send him on a path to salvation.

Looking good. Mayaheine is a new one for me. Showing up thusly in the Noble District will definitely get attention and the assistance at the shrines will get the attention of the people whose attention we need.

Mayaheine = Iomedae
Not "sorta" equals
But like actual plagiarism
Mayaheine = Iomedae
.
EDIT:
Okay, so I'm exaggerating slightly. But still--
Mayaheine = Iomedae
Yeah, I looked at her on the wiki. I'm thinking she may not have a full blown temple all her own, but maybe a shrine in Pelor's temple?

Svetozar Lanezra |

That's fine. #28 on the map in the SE corner is Mayaheine's -- and I'm a big fan of Mayaheine (and Iomedae!!!) -- but especially with Annelise and her starting a thing with Pelor, we can say that the building in #28 in Sunrise District is a Pelor temple run by a Paladin of Mayaheine. Or just Pelor and I'll ignore Mayaheine.
It's also cool that there are two different orphanages pretty close to that temple of Mayaheine (or Pelor).

So it is. I can tell you that map does not look great on my phone. Plus, I was looking in the wrong district.
But if Mayaheine is here, doesn't she preexist Iomedae?
Anyway, her shrine is at 28.

Svetozar Lanezra |

Wow, I really like Trail in the Woods, though apologetically it's hard for me say without the italic font.
There is a funny glitch from canon, that makes me chuckle: In The Amedio Jungle just outside of Sasserine and Cauldron, indeed on the one-day path between the two communities, is a Demonic (Awakened) Baboon named "TongueEater"! Not that Tongueeater has anything to do with this campaign; he's from Shackled City AP in Cauldron. But it is kinda funny of a coincidence.
.
Pelor, Mayaheine, Iomedae -- even Lathander or Mishakal -- it doesn't matter to me for this character. If we were in a strict GH game I'd prefer to make it Mayaheine. And in a more GH/PF mash-up, maybe Mayaheine mixed with (oddly enough) Sarenrae. But in this Legends from the Mist game where my PC isn't technically a Paladin (since there are no Classes), the Theme of the character can just be Holy Warrior and I can have the freedom of trying to please everyone from Lathander to Mishakal, Mayaheine to Iomedae.
In my blurb earlier, I only mentioned Shelyn (comparing w/ Lirr & Lydia) and Iomedae (for Mayaheine) as a metagame way to show non-GH folks kinda what I was talking about without being, uh, circumloquacious.
Also, my being open to a patron (or matron) deity gives the DM more room to assign me one -- or allow me to roleplay it throughout the game and maybe decide on one later, depending on how roleplay works out. Annelise may get me all the way to Pelor!

Trail in the Woods |

Ok, I hate the Paizo S/W :-). I checked the spoiler tag in my header and it used to work. But when I go back to my previous post it no longer works.
Sigh.
So, spoiler in header removed.

I've no idea if it's a reference, to me it means their magic isnt about fireballs.
EDIT: apparently it's a movei reference but I haven't seen it.
It's a reference to the film adaptation of Get Smart.
Siegfried, one of the villains, has a catchphrase of "Zis is KAOS! Ve don't [insert activity] here!" And in the movie specifically the activity in question is "ka-freakin' boom!" while they're stealing radioactive material to make a bomb.
And you're right on the money: it's meant to indicate my powers are illusions, enchantments and the occasional teleportation or divination (at least ideally in the future, how DOES "character advancement" work here anyway?).

Each time one of your weakness tags is invoked, either when you are making a roll and take the -1 for that tag, or when I say "You have 'old enemies?' Guess whose day just got more interesting!" you mark Improve on that theme. When you mark 3 Improve on a theme, you get to Improve it, and the main thing is adding tags.
When you mark 3 Milestones on one of your quests, you can Evolve or Expand that theme. This is a much bigger deal, so marking milestones will be something that the Narrator must agree on.
If you mark 3 Abandon on your quests - when you've turned away from your quest in potentially significant moments - you Replace your theme. We will agree on when you mark Abandon. This is bad (the new theme is, at least to start with, weaker) but very good, because it gets you Promise. And Promise is good.

Annelise Wykes |

Interesting and that looks way different than the demo version, which (as far as I can tell) doesn't mention Promise at all. So you will need to explain it to us at some point when it becomes relevant :)
@Honeylyn: I really like the way you have distinguised your themes and drawbacks in your profile header so I have copied it

Anirtak |

This is how the core does it.
It looks to me like the Demo tried to simplify it to fit on half a page where the full game spends a few pages on it. And, changed the names of some things: abandon to decay, quest to motivation, etc. I promise to elaborate on the details as we get there. I'm sort of trying to figure out how and what to share to avoid a massive info-dump.
Promise is another "counter," like Milestones or Abandon on a quest and Improve on a theme. Promise buys Fulfillment which opens up a whole set of quite powerful advantages. There are other ways to mark promise than replacing a theme, but replacing a theme gives you a bunch.
examples:
Fumbling Master: Whenever one of your weakness tags is invoked in a roll (regardless of who invoked it), you may choose to lose 2 Power and mark 2 Improve (instead of 1).
Lucky Bastard: Once per session, when you roll a 6 or less, you may treat it as a 7, as long as you didn’t roll double ones.
The Common Hero: Choose one of your themes. When using tags from this theme, you may act as if it is one level of Might higher than it is. If you evolve or replace this theme, choose a new one to bear this Quintessence.

Svetozar Lanezra |

Adding Tags to Themes after Milestones (and later Evolutions and Expansions) is cool -- but I'd rather Improve my original Tags. Like, starting out with a +1 Bluff, +1 vs Fiends and +1 Lore is a good (Low-Level) start. But for me I'd jump all over +2 Bluff, +2 vs Fiends and +2 Lore way more than three more +1 Tags. Further, I'd take the option of a -2 Spellcaster Anathema and -2 Tunnel Vision for two +2 Tags, but I realize we're starting a kinda new system, and don't need to be getting crazy away from RAW right out of the gate.
So whatever sounds good to you is fine with me, and after we've played for a while, we can collectively discuss what sounds good going forward. You are our trusted DM 'Master of Ceremonies'!
.
(Incidentally, when I've done vaguely similar 'near-diceless-roleplay' gaming in the past (sheesh it's been since the late 90s when 'Skills & Powers' (along with 'Call of Cthulhu') gave us the idea for 'closer' to diceless) we always just stuck with the d20: Roll a d20 (instead of 2d6) and add something between 1 and 5. And it was easier to start with a +1 or +0 and later, after the game (PC "Levels") progressed, get a +2 or +3, maybe a few new +1s.)

Svetozar Lanezra |

So, of course this is a completely different system with different in-play expectations and such (far more story & narrative-driven focused), but a general idea of more PF- or regular RPG-expected roles for our PCs may help us out quite a bit, as we get to know each other.
My PC:
A medium-BAB front-liner with as-Broken-as-possible Knowledge Skills and Uber-Bluff, with also a very good Diplomacy.

Noted.
We're going to see how this game works for a while.
And in that light, let me remind you that you don't have a Bluff skill, or a Lore skill to add to. You have narrative descriptors. You could easily add further descriptors to better your chances of success in your chosen fields.

Or, of course, you can continue to try to make this as D&D as you possibly can. ;)

Annelise Wykes |

I don't find it helpful to refer to tags as though they are skills (+1 Bluff or +2 Knowledge). They are doing their own thing and trying to line them up with the Pathfinder system is IMO limiting them.
That said, Annelise is melee going either holy warrior or priest, with a decent line in reading people and situations.

Trail in the Woods |

I agree that trying to view the characters through a D&D lens is probably not the right way to go.
My character really doesn't translate into D&D at all well. He is kinda sorta maybe a bit like a druid but there are a LOT of differences.
He is definitely a competent melee build and I really don't know exactly how his animism is going to manifest in game and what it will let him accomplish. Finding that out is a great deal of the fun that I anticipate having :-).
His spirit control was enough to save the child from the spooked horse, that much I do know :-)

Svetozar Lanezra |

LOL, yeah I've been looking at everyone's PCs because I want to learn who you are, better immerse myself into the game. And the whole time I'm, like, going back in my head to 'Who's in front?' / 'Who's the healer?' / 'Who's the spell support?' because it's been 25 years now of the d20 system. It's like I've forgotten what D&D is Supposed to be about. .... I think, for me at least, having the little security blanket of 'PC 1 is sorta-this' and 'PC 2 is sorta that' is just comforting to have in the back of my mind.

Honeylyn Penabwa Uani Erkenwald |

As far as Honeylyn's "call to attention to herself" moment, my idea is something along the lines of this: Honeylyn is the daughter of a gnome "Merchant Lord" in Sasserine, but this is more an honorary title among gnomes than official recognition of nobility by Sasserine. They have a lot of money, and they ARE at the top of the social ladder of Sasserine's gnome population, but that doesn't translate to actual authority in Sasserine's government.
Honeylyn has grown up in the Noble District, and received a fine education, but is more ambitious than her parents, who are content to hold illusion-enhanced masquerade balls and occasionally perform harmless pranks on their friends and neighbors. Honeylyn has sought an education in practical skills, including dungeoneering, and has attempted to use them to spy on her family's business rivals. This went relatively well, until she bit off more than she could chew and got caught, creating a scandal. Now cut off from her family's financial empire for an extended period of time (though still welcome to come home, provided she behaves herself) she's decided to take advantage of this to make a name for herself on her own terms: hone her skills, both natural and learned, gain wealth and fame, and kind of reinvent herself with a more heroic image!
Sort of like a foil to Annelise and Svetozar in that she's seeking "redemption" but for more selfish reasons. :P

I remember when 4e came out, there was all this rage about how it was making D&D a video game, which was deeply ironic, because 3e was actually, intentionally trying to make D&D feel like an MMO. We all got programmed to think of those roles. Healer, Tank, Support, Control, Damage. It's a very efficient playstyle.
This is messier. I think it's a good thing. Instead of playing numbers, focusing on bonuses, getting the optimal magic item for all your slots, and the optimal feat and the the optimal optimization guide, you're going to be playing complex characters who are trying to follow their personal agendas and save the multiverse at the same time. Once you embrace it, I think you'll really enjoy it.
