what was this about a potion someone said earlier? Peribras will drink it now. Unless Luninae has the Fey Foundling feat and wants to take all his wounds and then drink it for higher efficiency
At the start of the adventure we helped a band of people responsible for getting supplies to teams in the tapestry. In thanks for their aid thy got us a each a potion of cure serious wounds and a free potion of our choice. That was the potion I was referring to.
Luminae is perfectly fine not taking the damage if not needed, she doesn't have Fey Foundling or any other ability that makes her able to deal with damage on herself any better than anyone else.
Given the chance for respite the party will allow the party to loot while she tends to healing and staring at Zera before declaring she probably isn't poisoned or diseased.
Will adjust life link to better manage healing as she tends to both Zera and Peribras over about four rounds of spellcasting and life link.
Cure Light Wounds on Zera: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Cure Light Wounds on Peribras: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Cure Light Wounds on Self: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Also considering Malachi used an oil to great effectiveness, if I'm able, I'll take advantage of the tapestry supply depot we were rewarded with to purchase a scroll of daylight, just in case we run into the same situation.
Malachi Malarkey |
Oil of Daylight is one of my favourite mid-level 2PP purchases :)

**OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT** (2 of 2)
Suddenly, it becomes clear that the astral invaders’ retreat is merely a ploy. More invaders pour through the rifts to reinforce their companions. Their reckless assault tears the holes wider, and the entire demiplane begins to shift and fold. Locations fade and vanish, reappearing miles away, now separated by a wide expanse of barren, rocky wasteland. The invaders continue to pour through, and the tapestry’s exhausted repair mechanisms cease to function altogether. The triumphant attackers converge on the Pathfinders scattered across the wasteland.
Then, the sky turns red.
A primal screech pierces the tapestry, and a colossal ruby-flamed phoenix appears in the sky, its wings nearly blocking the sun. It swoops across the sky at tremendous speed, its tattered feathers leaving a trail of smoke. With another screech, it flaps its massive wings, and countless fiery feathers shoot towards the invaders. As the feathers strike, they explode, incinerating much of the invading force. Then the phoenix turns its attention to the other outsiders—the mass of Pathfinders—and beats its wings once more. A barrage of feathers strikes the wasteland, and from each resulting inferno emerges a bird of pure ruby-red flames.
Aram Zey’s voice echoes. “Can you hear me, Pathfinders? The tapestry is in its death throes! You are cut off—I cannot help you escape. Destroy the phoenixes—perhaps their magic can repair the tapestry!”
Table GMs, the Tapestry’s Last Defense condition on page 29 is in effect.

"Erm... phoenixes? Isnt it supposedta be phoenices? Umm... and uh... I wonder how they taste?"
Luminae Maralen |
Luminae gives a glare at the back of Sarsczek's head before looking back at the field of flames. "I'll save you the time. They probably taste like fire."
Malachi Malarkey |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
"Eh, that's not good, yes. Anyone got spells against fire?"
GM, if there's time before we go into initiative Mal will drink his potion of Heroism. Also, when we do go into initiative, Polly will use her 1/day Tactics domain ability to let Luminae roll twice and take the better result.
Luminae Maralen |
Luminae rubs her hand across her next to measure the strength of her remaining resistance herself before saying, "I have enough to ward off the worst of it for everyone here if I'm given the chance. You two first before we get in the thick of it."
"If we are dealing with birds one of you might want this flying potion I picked up a few days ago before we got in here."
If given the chance Luminae would case resist energy (fire) (for fire resist 20) on Malachi, Sarsczek, Xuan Fung, Peribras, and then Zera before getting into the various companions in that order (each will take one turn). I doubt I'll have that much time.
Peribras Sandlock |
Peribras should also drink his free potion of Heroism before the fight
GM Dennis |
Sorry for the delay folks. I'm working on getting a backup here. In the meantime, you all have 2 rounds to prepare for the next fight. Also, there is an optional hard mode for this encounter, which is a significantly harder challenge. If you accept that challenge and win, you get a bonus on your check to help repair the tapestry afterwards. There's no pressure either way, and I'll only launch you into that if there is unanimous consent (and feel free to PM me if you want to anonymously express your opinion).
Sarsczek |
Sarsczek looks up at the phoenices and back at his allies. "Hmm... dey fly... I fink I should too..."
He fishes his potion of fly out of his pack with his tail, then chugs it. "Okie... time to taste phoenix!"
Luminae Maralen |
Luminae spends her two turns to cast resist energy (fire) on Malachi and Sarsczek. I will also hand off the potion to fly to Malachi if it might help him.

Peribas Botted.
A powerful scream of Rage and Anguish reverberates across the tapestry as waves of flames heralds its arrival.
The heat unleashed washes over everyone like a Tsunami of unchecked power!
"Order shall be restored. Chaos will be purged." Its voice both quiet yet loud echoes within your very psyches as for a moment , the very space twists and explodes, revealing your foe in all its glorious flaming appearance.
This is a powerful elemental creature; a type of outsider made of fire. Because of the mutable form it is immune to effects requring a body, like bleeding, paralysis, poison, stunning, critical hits, sneak attack, or flanking. It is immune to fire and vulnerable to cold and the melee attacks of the creature are able to set their victims on fire.
This is elemental guardian created by the tapestry. It is imbued with powerful magical abilities including the ability of flight. With a snap of its beak, it attempts to send Zera off!

**cough** sorry. Got back straight into a profoundly busy day. Caught back up for realsies now...
But... Okay... there's sadly some bookkeeping involved. The phoenix is huge not gargantuan... There's no real reason for it to get down to ground level to claw things, so it's three squares above you guys... Mal could've flown up to attack it but not with a full attack unless you have 15' reach...
It's not an elemental so crits and sneak attacks are fine... there's not a hard limit on how often it can banish people from the realm, but it can only do so 1/round. It is immune to fire and vulnerable to cold though...
The Shroud of flame does an extra damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 5) = 8...
I think that's it?
Sarsczek is surprisingly badly burned by the flames that surround the phoenix, neither his fiendish heritage, nor Luminae's spells keeping his skin from sizzling!
Bite: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (12) + 17 = 29
Damage+unresisted fire: 2d6 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (3, 5) + 6 + (6) = 20
The bird lashes out with its beak as the tiefling rushes around it, tearing through scale and armor with remorseless efficiency.
Since yours and Mal's flank is somewhat in flux I'll hold off on resolving the bite for now, Sars
Fung's lashes warp against the phoenix's flame, robbing them of some of their force, much as the bolts and arrows that struck it were weakened by the extreme heat!

Life link will heal Zera, Malachi (assuming he is damage), and Sarsczek by 5. Luminae will take 15 (10 if Malachi had less than 5 damage).
Luminae holds back a steam of furious words as her allies burns appear on her body. "Of course, it can't just have ordinary fire."
She shifts forward trying to ignore the pain as she channels her magic to focus and compel the rage of every wound she has suffered and use that to inspire her allies to bring a swift end to this fight. "Sarsczek and Malachi! End this before we all burn! I will not let it go spewing nonsense about order while setting us on fire!"
Casting blood rage on Malachi and Sarsczek (if they are willing). Granting an additional bonus to strength for damage you take while the spell is active for the next 8 rounds. (+2 Str, -1 AC for every 5 points of damage. Max +10/-5)

Due to the recent bookkeeping issues, I'm going to post (in spoilers) an alternate turn should Malachai agree with my plan for him to take the AoO and give me the flank given the retconned battlefield positioning. As Sarsczek can become large as a swift and get reach on top of that, I do believe he could full attack with a 5-ft step from where he was, and if Mal is willing to fly around to the backside with fervorous speed and make flank...

Okay, 20 damage from the AoO redirected to Mal. Sorry I didn't catch this earlier, but you couldn't pick out which phoenix was coming for you during your prep rounds, so your study has to be now. I'll count it once you get your first hit... Which didn't actually change any hits, so uh, disregard :-p
Zera continues to pepper the phoenix with bolts, but only one of them manages to find the mark as the great sweeps of its wings shed cold iron bolts like so many raindrops. Just AC
Sarsczek tears away at the phoenix, flame scorching away at his flesh as he rends the bird of living flame until with a piercing cry it falls to the ground, flames burning hotter and hotter until all that remains is a pair of tattered ruby-red feathers.
Ow! Ow! Hot-hot-hot!: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 6) = 15
You can use each feather to either Repair the tapestry (with a Craft (cloth), Heal, Knowledge (arcana or planes), Spellcraft or Use Magic Device check. (Lower DC since you took on a tougher phoenix) Alternatively you could use it to resurrect a fallen party member if you had one. If needed you could expend spells/abilities of either healing or fire to empower the feather. Right now there's no need for that though...
Leaving this here in case any more phoenixes happen to attack...

We should do it quickly before anything else starts burning us alive." She looks about the party for a minute before stepping up herself with a sigh. "I need you help Daosvaria, does anything you know help with using this to keep this place from falling apart around us?" Forming from Luminae's shadow is a tiny umbral creature with scales and wings that flits up to her shoulder, to Luminae's disgruntlement. The small dragon speaks in whisphers and suggestions on how to use perform the repair.

Well, you've got two rounds before another Phoenix swoops down on you! Are you all are still up for another hard-mode phoenix?
You're able to unlock the resonance of Hao Jin's own sorcery, which still imbues the creature's remnants to help seal some of the Tapestry's tears! Unfortunately, the guardians of the Tapestry are uncaring of your intent, and more are swooping down on you and other teams of Pathfinders!
Luminae Maralen |
I'm fine with another hard mode fight, but again I'm going with the rest of the party on this.
To help manage my life link regardless whether Peribras saved, I'll say that if he fails against the fire I'll drop him from my life link as an immediate action.
Luminae immediately responds to the various burns with a blast of healing to stem the tide of damage flowing toward her. With that settled she adds to her blessing of fervor with a casting of bless. "If you can't stop from getting burned then we need to end this quickly."

GM: I want to confirm how blood rage will work. Are you ruling it as a bonus based on current damage they have (so their strength bonus is reduced as I heal them) or is based on damage they have taken during the spell (my healing won't change their bonuses or penalties). I'm fine with any interpretation, but want to make sure this doesn't cause any confusion during the fight.
Zera Merone |
Was there more than two rounds between phoenix fights? If so, I would want to re-up my weapon spec. If not, I should have 5 rounds left by my math, and shouldn't need more prep. Also, I'm good to continue hard mode.
"Thanks Luminae! I appreciate the help! I'll try to look less tasty for a bite next time!" Zera spots the approaching Phoenix and stands ready to shoot.
GM Cwethan |
Just two rounds, so you're good on the weapon spec.
Luminae, I had been tracking it based on current hp, but a (better) reading of the spell is that it ticks up based on damage taken during the spell's duration. So that's what it will be henceforth!
Since a hard-mode Phoenix was okayed earlier, I'll push forward with one tonight if I don't hear otherwise. But anyone who doesn't want that should please feel free to sing out.
Malachi Malarkey |
I'm good for another hard mode phoenix.
Malachi spends the intermission recovering from his brief rage, and casts Bulls Strength upon himself.
