Kingmaker: For Clan and Crown

Game Master michael.lenehan

The land rush is on! Sent south by Brevoy, the heroes have the unenviable task of venturing into the infamous Stolen Lands and annexing the territory, facing down monsters, bandits, and worse. It's hard enough to conquer territory—but does a ragtag band of adventures have what it takes to found and defend a burgeoning kingdom from the terrors of the wild?

I’m looking for six players to join me as I run the Kingmaker Adventure Path. Recruitment begins today and will stay open until 6:00 P.M. (CDT) July 3rd (or until such time as interest begins to wane, a week at minimum. I will give notice that we are closing recruitment early). Given the nature of that (American) holiday week (and the fact that I’m off work on Sundays and Mondays, and it’s much easier to start a game without the distraction of work) the game won’t officially kick off until Monday, July 8th.

Classes- Anything Paizo has publish is considered fair game although some might have a harder time explaining what they are doing in the River Kingdoms (Eastern type classes, especially. Although a Ninja from Daggermark might be intriguing). Furthermore, I prefer characters that can fill a certain roll. I generally choose along certain lines Arcane, Divine, Melee, Melee (ranged), Skilled, and Hybrid (although the Hybrid classes from the Advanced Class Guide certainly fill this niche, I also consider the Bard, Magus, and those who don’t neatly fit among the other five to fill this role). Barbarians, Monks, and Rogues may be of either the vanilla flavored or Unchained variety while Summoners MUST be Unchained.

Races- While I prefer keeping to the races found in the Core Rulebook if you think you can convince me why some of the more monstrous races would be interested in exploring and clearing the Greenbelt of bandits feel free to try.

Abilities- We will be using the High Fantasy (20) point buy system.

Hit points- Full hit points at first level. Every level after first you will roll for your hit points. If you roll less than ½ your hit dice+1 give yourself that minimum (i.e. you can never do less than ½ HD+1).

Skills- We will be using the Background skills option.

Feats & Traits- Everyone will start with two traits (one of which must be from the Kingmaker Player’s Guide). You may select a third trait by taking a Drawback as well.

Starting Gold & Gear- Maximum starting gold for your class. I want everyone to be well prepared for survival in the wilderness. If you choose the Pioneer trait your starting horse is a light riding horse and that’s it. No tack, no harness. If you want it to be war-trained I expect you to pay the difference between the two versions (If you have the Handle Animal skill you may train it on your own for 50% of this difference).

House Rules- A couple of rules I’ve been toying around with. Character Death- While I don’t go out of my way to kill characters, it might happen. A character is considered dead at negative his constitution score + his level. Also, at 7th level and your kingdom is up and running all players will receive the Leadership feat for FREE, with the caveat that they are not to be adventuring with the party but to be used to fill Kingdom leadership roles. They will still advance as per usual, just that they won’t be going out into the field with you. If you wish to have your cohort travel with you, you can certainly forgo this boon and take the Leadership feat on your own. You may only choose one of these options.
I will be incorporating characters and encounters from the CRPG as well when they become available.

That should pretty much cover everything I can think of. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Dotting for interest. Will probably build a melee divine 4-lvl or 6-lvl caster of some kind. Posting with an alias that was part of a previous Kingmaker a few years back that died quickly. Will probably do something along the same lines as this alias, but this is not my actual submission yet.

Dot!

Oh, one more thing and this is VERY IMPORTANT (notice it's bigger, bolded and capitalized, so it must be important). We will be using Roll20 for maps and you MUST move your character on the map (it's one of my biggest pet peeves).

If you post that your character moves somewhere on the map and don't move your token correspondingly, I will do my best to move them to where you posted you wanted to move to. If you end up somewhere you didn't want to be (say, in the area of effect of a fireball) don't come crying to me as I won't shed a tear for you.

Dotting, but I've never used Roll20 before. Does it work alright on Macs?

I'm not sure about Apple, but being it's browser based it should be alright.
Can anyone verify this?

Interested
Will look to adjust soon.

Dotting for interest. I’ll make something up this week.

Dotting and yes, Roll20 works on the mac just fine - I've used it both in Chrome and Safari.

Interesting, limited leadership and CRPG...

Yeah, I hated those freaking Technic League mages in the beginning and can't wait to throw them at the party. Also might do some MinionQuest side adventures with the cohorts if the party wants.

What about feat tax?

Sorry, the "Feat Taxes" will remain in effect. If Paizo had come out with something like that I might consider it, but someone else's house rules are just that, House Rules.

Dotting in.

Quick question: In regard to the Bastard campaign trait, can half-elves, half-orcs, tieflings, aasimar, changelings and any such other hybrid races take it?

Hello! Dotting in with my submission, a Human Paladin of Apsu.

While I'm certainly eager to try and play, I have to just ask a few questions as you're so new to the boards (sorry, I hate to have to do this, but this would have been my third attempt at Kingmaker with Darivan, as both previous times the GM vanished).

1- How long have you been GMing? Is this one of your first games, or have you been GMing since the dawn of Pathfinder itself?

2- Have you ever GMed a PBP before? It is a very different beast to real-life games (having run games in both formats).

3- What would you say is your GM style? Are you very RP-heavy? Do you jump from one encounter to the next?

4- What are your posting expectations? 1/day? Multiple times per day? Once every few days?

5- Is there any way that we could be sure that you won't vanish three days into the game? I hate to have to ask, but given the new profile, and the fact I have literally had that happen to me before, I have to check.

Overall, I certainly do hope that all my worrying is for naught. In any case, thank you for your consideration!

I'd like to submit Pyros. He has been in two Kingmaker campaigns before, but both campaigns died before leveling up. I've tried to make him a bit more than just your garden-variety Dex fighter. He's something of a Swordlord supremacist, and wants to establish a free New Rostland outside Brevoy (with the ultimate goal of building a powerbase to free Old Rostland). In service of this cause, he's come to worship Milani, and she has granted him divine aid to assist in freeing his people.

Mechanically, this is represented currently by the Possessed Hand feat. In time this aid will grow in power, as represented by the class features of the Steelbound Fighter archetype and VMC Magus. (I hope VMC is okay, by the way. I figured it would be since you said all classes were acceptable, but I can remove it easily if not).

For all that, though, Pyros is still a fighter. He has okay skill points, decent Charisma (only because he might need it for his kingdom role), but that's about it. Speaking of Kingdom roles, he wants to run the place, because, like I said, he has big goals. But as long as the ruler is amicable to his objectives, I could also see him being a General, Marshal, Royal Enforcer, or some other martial role.

After doing some research and the fact that the trait itself limits it to Human characters, I'm going to limit it, myself, to just Humans, Half elves, Half orcs, and Aasimars (with the Scion of Humanity racial trait, only).

I've been playing and GM'ing Pathfinder since it's inception. D&D since, probably, before you were born (since 1980, at least).

2- Have you ever GMed a PBP before? It is a very different beast to real-life games (having run games in both formats).
I've played and GM'ed PbP before and am familiar with the nature of the beast.

3- What would you say is your GM style? Are you very RP-heavy? Do you jump from one encounter to the next?
I prefer to let characters have their say before moving on to the next encounter (I have been accused of letting things linger too long on occasion). What I like about Kingmaker is that you're not "on the clock" so to speak and that there is plenty of time to get into all sorts of mischief.

4- What are your posting expectations? 1/day? Multiple times per day? Once every few days?
While once a day is ideal, I understand that real life has a tendency to get in the way. An absence of a couple of days isn't really a deal breaker. However an absence of a week or more without forewarning (or a letter from your physician, lawyer, or clergy) will be a cause for concern, prompting a PM from me to see if you're still alive/interested in playing. After 10 days without a post (or PM reply) your character (and you) are gone.

5- Is there any way that we could be sure that you won't vanish three days into the game? I hate to have to ask, but given the new profile, and the fact I have literally had that happen to me before, I have to check.
Other than my word, no.

Looking at the two submissions thus far I’d like to apply for a different nitch; the full arcane caster. I’ll play a changeling Witch; nice full arcane support but without the sheer shenaniganary of a wizard. Her witch mother will be native to the stolen lands, and so the campaign will be a little bit of a returning to her roots story for her. I’ll provide more backstory once I’ve reread the players guide and and made out the character sheet.

I would love to apply with an aasimar cleric. She was selected for another Kingmaker game, but alas, it died just after the first post from the GM.

I’m a fighter. I got more feats than I know what to do with. lol

Character is coming under way. I have a human fey sorcerer specialized in enhancement spells in mind.

Got a few more questions:
1. Are you stringent when it comes to carry weight capacity, or do allow PC's to go over it so as long as it isn't too ridiculous?
2. Do you allow free class starting kits at chargen?
3. Would you like us too mention what Leadership Role we have in mind for our PCs or will that be dealt with later down the line?

I've got a human barbarian that will be whipped up later on.

Awesome! Good to know, and thank you for addressing my concerns! As you may be able to tell from the number of reused characters, Kingmaker has a lot of dead games.

As long as it isn't too over the top, liking trying to run while carrying an anvil or carrying half of the general store with you I'm not too concerned. How many times have you seen characters carrying all their gold with them when it's actually supposed to weigh 20 pounds or more? If you're using Herolab you can click on no encumbrance and no coin weight. I allow the players to decide how much is too much.
2. Do you allow free class starting kits at chargen?
By class kits do you mean starting equipment? Then no, you'll have to purchase them.
3. Would you like us too mention what Leadership Role we have in mind for our PCs or will that be dealt with later down the line?
That can all be worked out later when you begin to establish your kingdom. Given the high rate of attrition of PbP games I don't think it's necessary for someone to declare their role now only to have to bow out at a later date. That said, it doesn't hurt to have a goal in mind.

I'm going to submit Demlin as a follower of Abadar, wanting to bring some law and order into the lawless chaotic river kingdoms. I'm not sure about her class yet, that will come out writing her backstory. Her goal will be eradicating bandits and setting up up some sort of force to enforce the law and keep everyone safe. Her followers from the free leadership feat would be this group.

Dotting for interest.
(Ignore the profile, will rewrite for this game's creation rules).

Leaning towards an Archer inquistor of Erastil.

Full Disclosure: I've played this AP in a home game, but the group broke up before the end of book two or so.

Dot

Submitting Kern Therensgard, a martially-inclined wizard with a chip on his shoulder regarding the Surtovas. Full background is in the profile.

He's been in the beginning of a few Kingmaker campaigns that folded after the first encounter. I'm hoping to see one follow through.

Dotting. I have a 100% devoted healer that I need to rework the story a little, but should have this done in the next day or so. Thanks.

Should I just throw the crunch together and submit? Or do you want us to write down the story elements as well? I have my character pretty well in mind, but it'll take longer to put the pen to work on all the story material. Crunch would be quicker to do. How do you prefer it?

I can totally understand. When I ran this for my RL group they quickly got tired of the wash, rinse, repeat of exploration. We didn't make it much past the halfway point of book 2 ourselves.

Backstory:
Ursiah's life has long been tied to the natural world. He was found abandoned in the woods by the younger brother of Gurev Medvyed (the lord of the family). This younger brother, Orovis, and his wife had long been childless, which prompted the merciful man to adopt the half-orc babe. As time went on however, it became clear that Ursiah was something special indeed. His fingernails grew into black claws, he possessed an innate ability to commune with animals, and at times he could even take on the likeness of a bear! (A most auspicious nominal for the Medvyed family.) Realizing that his adopted son was gifted with the powers of a shifter, Orovis taught him the ways of the wild, both practical and magical.

Over the years, Ursiah became a regular fixture at his father's side, joining him in hunts from Stoneclimb on an almost daily basis. His knowledge, instincts, and abilities all proved invaluable for his family time and time again. Eventually he was invited by Lord Gurev to a celebratory feast as a guest of honor. However, this feast profoundly impacted Ursiah when he overheard a guest refer to him as "Orovis' favorite pet." In truth, while Uriah's father and uncle had wholly accepted him, other family members viewed him as at best a local curiosity, or at worst a wild animal that Orovis had barely "tamed." Heartbroken, Ursiah resolved to prove that he was truly worthy of the Medvyed name. With his father's reluctant blessing, the half-orc departed to join an expedition into the Stolen Lands, intent upon proving himself and bringing glory to House Medvyed.

Tl;dr, Ursiah (pronounced like Josiah) is a natural-born Shifter who's currently obsessed with proving that he's worthy of the Medvyed family name. Role-wise he's a fairly good melee fighter with good nature-based skills. Don't really have any plans for him in regards to when our kingdom get's started, but I do foresee the Medvyeds making a demand of him at some point that might not be in the party's best interests...

If anybody's got any recommendations or comments about my boy here, I'm all ears. :)

I prefer a mixture of both, really. Mechanically how he or she is put together gives me an idea of what to plan for as they level up. as far as backgrounds go it doesn't have to be super detailed, just an outline of where they've been and what they've done as well as where they plan on going in the future. I wouldn't necessarily put two characters together from different houses if one of them has a background of some running feud with the other house (or I might just to see the roleplaying dynamic, some people just like to watch the world burn).

Hmm. How by-the-book do you run animal companions/mounts with regards to player control, handle animal checks, etc.? I've been thinking about cavalier-types again...

theasl wrote:

I usually let the players run their own animal companions, familiars, or mounts without needing a Handle Animal check. I would call for a check only in the most extreme circumstances i.e. trying to coax your mount to jump a gorge, having your animal companion enter a burning building, etc...

Would it be alright if I took the Fools for Friends campaign trait from the Second Darkness AP and used it as a social trait? Trying to boost the bonus to CL I can get with the Coven hex :)

Fools for Friends

Interested! This is Halden Elwood, a human ranger from a previous Kingmaker game that did not get very far. He is a former bandit looking for a fresh start in the Greenbelt. He will be focused primarily on archery, and can also serve as a melee fighter if needed. He has all of the wilderness/nature oriented skills, and can serve as a trapfinder with good perception and disable device scores. I will be rebuilding him to fit your specifications shortly.

Fools for Friends is Second Darkness trait and that is where it should stay.
To quote the Honorable Dr. Peter Venkman "Excuse me, Egon, you said crossing the streams was bad."

Ooh, fun! Def dotting for interest.

I have a question about Roll20
Does Roll20 require players to be online at the same time or does it allow asymmetrical play? I'm in Australia so timezones may be a problem.

Do you allow guns? I like the idea of a foppish big game hunter with ties to nobility.

Here is my submission, "Bob" the Ranger.

I took the half price Animal Handling option to train my Pioneer granted light horse.

Crunch and Fluff are in the profile. I am glad to answer any questions.

Gruingar believes himself to be a dragonic avatar of Apsu who has somehow gotten trapped in the shape of a human. His goals are to find a way to 'return' to his proper dracon form. Then peacefully rule in Apsu's name. {Totally irrelevant to me if becomming a dragon is beyond the scope of the campaign. Maybe that will be a post level 20 occurence.} That is what he has in mind and what he is working toward.
Will take 4 levels of sorcerer, then 10 of dragon disciple, and will take a few of preferred spellcaster feat to keep casting as a full level sorcerer.

My submission should be pretty much done, except for finalizing the animal companion. Check my profile for everything. Is it okay to assume that the animal companion begins with the maximum amount of tricks, since I have had possibly years to train it?

Avery is a Kellid tribeswoman who fights with a horse animal companion, has minor divine magic and a bunch of nature-related skills.

Dotting for interest! Considering the other submissions thus far, I will be making an unchained rogue.
