I was thinking since it was point blank? I mean your sword didn't hit an invisible barrier. Also Pnin's bow is +1, so maybe the magic gets the arrows through?
I was also thinking hoping that Sanrael would dispatch the dog with a bad will save.
If the baddie is undead, your plan definitely makes more sense. Pnin will switch things up if his arrows get deflected.
Of course, that plan requires rolling actual hits.
