So, I think I'm going to withdraw my application. I really like the concept, and I'm sure it'll be a fun game for those involved, but there seems to be a lot of applications that I would have trouble accepting in my limited vision of a Viking campaign (like a lot of the psionic and/or occult classes), and more importantly I'm working on a game I'd like to run on the boards (which I mentioned up thread) and between getting it ready, recruiting, and running it I don't think I'll really have enough time to play in another game. Thanks for your consideration.

Hjálmarr Magnusson |

Hjalmarr, there are already core PF stats for a Longaxe. It's slightly better than a halberd, but also exotic, so you'd need to be a half-elf or dwarf to get auto-proficiency (useful if you're not sure how to decide on a race).
I thought about that, but I don't want to go down the reach route. The halberd gave me the desired stats and is conceptually close. I'm thinking about a moderately long version of one of these. If the reskinning proves to be a problem, then he's just using a primitive halberd.
Will check in tonight with more updates to the character. Do we have any more info on how orcs are regarded in the setting? Are they still reviled or are there more 'civilized' tribes that (sometimes) peaceably interact with human villages.

thunderbeard |

@Hjálmarr—yeah, proficiency means halberd might work well enough (technically, a halberd is an axe with a spike at the top, but that doesn't really matter except in a campaign with extreme gritty realism)
@Ragnvald—Escheton's got a good idea. Trickster can steal abilities from any path, and overall gets a ton of general abilities, making it useful for almost any character.
@Brynja—your alias describes Brynja as a first-level character. I didn't look farther than that.
* * *
Also, I find posting lists in heavy recruitments is useful, as it lets people check to make sure someone's listed their character somewhere (these can often get lost if one person, even a GM, is making a list that nobody else checks and there's over 15 or so submissions).

GM Fimbulvinter |

El Ronza, you are allowed multiple submissions.
Philo Pharynx, you may gain an equivalent amount of fast healing, but regeneration is not something that I am too fond of in my games, primarily because it usually makes 3/4 of all monsters and foes irrelevant unless the DM fudges the game and decides to metagame, which makes the game a lot less fun for both parties involved.
Thunderbeard, Tundra Orcs would likely have some aspects of Northlander culture, but be far more savage. This is obviously a generality, but the matter still stands.
DekoTheBarbarian, message me and we can figure out how to work in a reflavored Zen Archer.
Bandw2, there are some pretty good descriptions of the gods on the first post. Have you looked those over?
MordredofFairy, I joined these messageboards about a week before I first posted and after chatting with Fallen Herald, since he obviously seemed to know more about PBP than me with the way that he set up his recruitment, decided to ask him for advice. He was nice enough to point me towards some basic PBP guides and let me utilize his format of recruitment posting, both of which were useful since Paizo is a bit different than Obsidian Portal in terms of players, expectations, and things of that nature. Now, I don't know what axe you have to grind against new DMs, flakes or no flakes, but it is downright rude and uncivilized to throw around things that are, at best, thinly-veiled accusations towards people that you do not even know. I know that the way some play by posts work can be downright annoying and DMs that drop their campaigns without warning can be obnoxious, but not everyone who starts a new campaign is that sort of guy/gal. I understand your frustrations, but this sort of attitude does not help things. Still, I will not hold it against you, so long as you make good on that apology once you see that this campaign shall not suffer the same fate as the others that you have seen fail.
Monkeygod, hey, don't worry about the whole blow-up thing. I'm sure he's just frustrated. I wouldn't write him off as a fellow gamer just yet. I do appreciate you coming to the defense of someone who you don't even know, so props for you. Since you apparently know Fallen Herald, let me know if he resumes posting, okay?
Rikash, there is a good bit of seafaring while traveling. It is not QUITE as heavy of a thing as it was in actual Viking history, but it does have a good amount early on. Later on, less so, apart from a particularly awesome ocean scene or two near the end.
Thunderbeard, Path of War is allowed. Þakka þér for the list, by the way!
Oyzar, I did not set a hard deadline to close off recruitment. I will close it once I feel that most serious players are finished. You still have some time!
Eschaton, Elves are regarded with equal parts reprehension and awe by the Northlanders due to their connection to the mythic forests near the entrance to Bifrost.
Hjálmarr Magnusson, Orcs are viewed in a mixed light. On one hand they are worthy foes in battle. On the other hand, however, they are often shunned for their primal, bestial ways, as well as the dishonorable tactics that their race seems to use in times of war.

Brynja Østergård |

@Brynja—your alias describes Brynja as a first-level character. I didn't look farther than that.

Most OP level 1 toon ever. CL4 at level 1. I am so doing it right. I hadn't realized I had habitually put her at level one by her classes.
Anyways, as I said, I dislike it as a GM because I prefer to be in the drivers seat of my campaigns, otherwise I just feel like I got backseat drivers. I'm quite controlling about things like that when I run my own games. But I'm not sure I care if someone's listed my character somewhere, unless it's the GM in which case I simply assume it's on their list if I've put myself forward. I'd just hate for the GM to use your list for some reason and think mine is unfinished.

Bandw2 |

question on path abilities, can you choose them multiple times? or do they need to specify if you can select them.
Bandw2, there are some pretty good descriptions of the gods on the first post. Have you looked those over?
I did, I enjoy reading mythos, but now that i think about it it was a while ago I may have forgotten info that i didn't find interesting at the time(as it didn't apply to my current character). I just don't imagine Baldur as someone I'd want to praise, I just remember that he was pretty young and weak when in the mythos he was killed by the mistletoe spear.

thunderbeard |

(I'm updating the list, and will probably repost it every day or two until recruitment ends, so no worries)
By the way: I'd assume that by "choose a mythic role now," the GM is likely less interested in making sure we have a party balance of specific abilities, and more a general balance of roles. A lot of characters (mine included) would likely go dual path, but the paths themselves also define general character roles (striker, tank, divine, arcane, skilled, support), so I'm just picking the *role* that fits my character the most to talk about during recruitment.
It is nice to see how many Guardians are showing up, though. It's my favorite mythic role (and arguably the most powerful), and often gets neglected during recruitments because it gets an undeservedly bad reputation.

which pretty much matches all but mine with archmaging out to be a better melee-talk...
edit: on talk of multiple submissions, the only thing I can think of making is a Balduresque warrior who uses Light SOP to buff and what not but i'm not sure I really want to play that character. I'm really looking into playing some kind of cursed monster esque character, someone who is semi-ashamed of some part of them.

Philo Pharynx |

More than fair. And I understand the concerns, which is why I brought it up before it's even an option.

Please pardon my off topic post but several people previously mentioned having some interest in a separate game I'm looking at potentially starting and I just wanted to quickly point out that there's an official interest check up now with some more details for those who might like to see it.

Warhawk7 |

Important question:
How different from the Kobold Press Northlands is this? Actually, how different from the Midgard setting in general will this be?
Also, rune magic, yea or nay?
It has been said that the setting is different, but the rules are allowed, including rune magic. My character is actually using one of the runes herself.

El Ronza |

Okay, I'm not done yet, but I'm getting there. I need to choose feats, skills, gear, traits, and maneuvers known, as well as statting up his raven... okay, I'm a way away yet >.> Hopefully this should give you some idea, though. I've tried to leave some things ambiguous in the story, because a) I'm exhausted and I'll probably scrap half of this tomorrow, and b) I like leaving things for GMs to play with.

Hjorr and Yngvildr had always wanted a son. What they hadn't expected was two.
Born within minutes of each other, Stigandr and Sigmundr were inseparable from birth. They grew up finishing each other's sentences, telling each other's lies, and wrestling in perfectly-matched bouts that ended with both parties exhausted, their father often having to intervene and carry both boys off to do their chores.
They had the same fair hair, the same brilliant eyes, the same habits and quirks and dreams. In Sigmundr, Stigandr had an equal, someone who was like him in every way - a lifelong companion.
When Stigandr tripped and twisted his ankle, it was Sigmundr who cried. When Sigmundr got his first axe and nearly cut his own hand off, it was Stigandr who felt the rush of air from the near miss. When one took ill, the other would complain of the symptoms at the same time.
But nothing lasts forever.
--------------------
"Come, brother! Surely you're not growing slow in your old age!" Sigmundr laughed, standing by the edge of the woods, axe in hand. "I thought you could keep up with me!"
"I'm only older by five minutes, you fool!" Stigandr called back, a grin splitting his face. "Since you're behind on growth, I figured you could use a head-start!"
"You wound me!" clasping a hand over his heart, Sigmundr laughed again, before taking off into the woods, Stigandr hot on his heels.
The chase was long, and the hours longer. As the laughter died, Stigandr looked around, spying his brother in a nearby tree. "We should head back," he called. "Father always told us not to come this far, remember?"
"Nonsense and superstition! We're seventeen, brother; there's no reason to believe in that stuff anymore." Dropping from his perch, Sigmundr took his brother by the arm, leading him deeper into the woods. "Come on, just a little further, then we'll go back," he proposed.
Stigandr sighed, but agreed.
--------------------
There are places in the world where one is not meant to tread, where strange forces are at play and fate itself is mutable. Sometimes, events come to pass which cannot be replicated, and which are not wiped from one's memory, so much as smudged, like a hand swept across wet ink.
--------------------
"That's far enough." Stigandr caught his brother's arm, but Sigmundr shrugged him off.
"Come on. Just to the far side of this clearing."
"You can't tell me you don't feel that!" Stigandr stared at Sigmundr in amazement, every hair on his neck and arms standing on end. The very air around him seemed to hum.
"I feel nothing."
"We're going back. Now."
"You go back. I'm just going to the far side."
"Stop-!"
The world suddenly went very bright, then black.
--------------------
There are forces at work in the world that none can explain. Sites and times hold great power, and some bonds can never be broken.
--------------------
Stigandr finally opened his eyes to find himself back home, in his own bed. His father was nearby, still smelling of the forge. "You're awake," was all he said.
"How...?"
"It's a miracle we found you. Didn't I warn you never to go too far from home?"
Stigandr slowly moved his limbs, checking that they all remained. He still had everything, as far as he could tell, yet something felt wrong. He'd ask Sigmundr. He'd know. He always knew.
"Is Sigmundr outside? I'd like to see him." And tell him I was right, he added.
His father's silence confirmed his fears more surely than any words could.
--------------------
It was with heavy heart and heavier feet that Stigandr left home, wandering from town to town. He was always offered hospitality, in no small part due to his willingness to work for a meal and a warm place to sleep. A piece of him was missing, and no amount of drink or work seemed to fill it.
After three weeks, he began noticing the bird. It was an immense thing - a raven, easily the size of an eagle. It never seemed to pay heed to anyone around him, always watching him with its beady black eyes.
He tried to shoo it away once. When it vanished, he felt the strength leave his bones, terror gripping at his heart. The next time he saw it, he offered it a crust of his bread, which it swooped down and took on the wing, retreating to a rooftop and watching him as it ate.
When he practiced with his sword one morning, after making his meager camp, it watched him, perched on a low branch. Soon, he came to accept it as a companion.
And one day, it spoke.
--------------------
He heard the voice in his head, as surely as if Sigmundr were standing next to him.
Brother.
--------------------
Over the next several months, his crow-brother helped him. His despair became a tool, his anger, a weapon. The crow - whether or not it truly was Sigmundr - taught him to harness his negativity, to preserve it, to unleash it in devastating strikes, to force it on any who would challenge him.
And he taught him to harness the strange magic that had awakened in him.
When Stigandr asked him what had brought on this awakening, the raven couldn't say. When he asked what it had been like to die, there had been no response. When he inquired as to which god could have given him these powers at this price, only one name came to mind, unspoken, unbidden: Loki.
But it was a gift, this power. And so he learned to use it. He learned to draw magic from his own strength of will, to give it shape and weight, to unleash it. Tendrils of shadow that snaked from his hands, invisible shields that warded blows as surely as steel, the ability to walk across liquids - these, and more, were his. He just had to hone them.
And hone them he did. He became a wandering champion, dueling in place of those too weak or cowardly to accept a challenge personally, accepting his payment, and moving on. Those witnessing a duel would sometimes report how odd it was to see his opponent seemingly afraid of him, given his less-than-impressive stature. Or how odd his abilities were - dark magics, they whispered, but as they were clearly his own, they were within the confines of the duel.
And it was most unnerving how that large crow seemed to stare at him the whole time.
--------------------
Halfstead. The raven turned its head toward him, swooping in and landing on his shoulder. It seems you've made it to the coast.
Indeed. With a sigh, Stigandr rolled his shoulder, stiff and sore after three weeks sleeping on hard earth. Let's see what this town has in store.
Any input you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

El Ronza |

Today was busier than expected; hoping to have Stigandr's crunch finished tomorrow, as well as an appearance and personality. As for mythic path, if it's allowed, he'll be going Stranger (from the Mythic Hero's Handbook by Legendary Games); if not, either Champion or Trickster. I'll have to re-read both.

DekoTheBarbarian |

Well, here's my alternate submission: Jorwella Heiddottir and her phantom Karsten Logsdon.
All through her life, though, Jorwella knew she was watched over. She always had a feeling of peace and love when she was alone. She never knew what the feeling was until the day she turned 15. On the day of her birth, during a small celebration with her parents, the caravan was attacked by Reaver dwarves, and slaughtered almost to a man. During the fight, while fending off attackers with her father's bow, an intense pain in her head sent her to the ground before a spirit-like being manifested before her. The being, clad in ancient mail and wielding a greatsword, stood protectively over her and her mother, fending off any would-be killer.
From that day forward, she knew that there was something she was meant to do, and with her mother's blessing, went on her own to discover the fate the Norns hand in store for her, always guarded over by her guardian spirit.
So, whatcha think? I'm actually kinda wanting to use her instead of Haraldr, though either being picked would be awesome.

Cuàn |

I'd also be interested in joining.
The idea is for a Changeling Spiritualist whose phantom is her father and would be linked to either Anger or (most likely) Dedication. Not sure on the other end yet but I'm leaning toward Shaman (Speaker for the Past).
Her hag mother would have held a grudge against her father's family which was why she kept him alive after the deed was done. She wanted him to see his own daughter and see how the hag traded the girl for his sister's newborn which she then consumed before his eyes and only then did she kill him. He immediately became my character's phantom and protector, a guardian angel so to speak.
The reason for the grudge would be that she herself was actually raised in the same family as my character's father. When she heard the calling from her own mother she followed and was transformed into a hag. Her adoptive father however tracked the coven that had taken her and had slain them all with the exception of my character's mother who, as the youngest member of the coven, was sent out to hunt and as such was absent at the time. Grandfather eventually died killing an enormous linnorm, beheading it before succumbing to the beast's poison, and was whisked away by a Valkyrie.
My character would have actually used the Calling by her mother to track her down and kill her, with the aid of her phantom father.

"I'm only older by twelve minutes, you fool!" Stigandr called back, a grin splitting his face.
When he practised with his sword one morning, after making his meager camp, it watched him, perched on a low branch.
He became a wandering champion, duelling in place of those too weak or cowardly to accept a challenge personally, accepting his payment, and moving on.
Standing at 5'10" and weighing a little over 180 pounds, Stigandr's body is hard and muscular, honed by his recent years as a wandering sellsword and duelist. Narrow-waisted and long-legged, he knows his frame isn't as imposing or powerful as many of his countrymen, and resents the fact. His hands are large, with prominent knuckles and many callouses, often smudged with ink and charcoal-dust unless he makes a conscious effort to keep them clean.
His hair is pale blond, hanging thick and coarse to his shoulders, wrangled into braids woven with leather strips. A handful of stray locks, not long enough to be properly combed into his braids, flop into his face; he habitually pushes them out of his eyes when engaged in conversation. His beard is small, hanging scarcely to the base of his throat, and barely exceeding his mouth in width. His skin is pale, rough and weather-beaten, with an assortment of scars in various places - some that appear in places he doesn't remember being wounded, but where his corvid companion has been struck.
Perhaps his most striking figure are his eyes - an intense, glittering dark blue, framed by angular brows and surprisingly dark lashes, seeming to change in brightness depending on the light. When speaking, he fixes them on the listener with such intensity, it can make the weak-willed squirm and shift uncomfortably. His default facial expression is one of grim seriousness, lips set in a hard line, eyebrows slightly dropped, eyes cold and staring.
His armour is mithril, a fine chain shirt as a reward for his efforts in a troll-hunt. A padded gambeson hangs to his wrists and knees, and his woollen tunic is dyed a faded, dirty red. He wears leather breeches, tough leather boots, and heavy leather gauntlets - the right thicker than the left, to allow his companion a perch.
While prone to brooding and negative reflection, Stigandr isn't antisocial. He enjoys company; he simply isn't good at showing his appreciation. His smiles - genuine smiles, rather than forced or grim ones - are rare, and have an odd effect, as if he has to force his muscles to obey his mental command. He can swing into moods quickly - dreadful rage, cold malice, or solemn contemplation. He is still young, and without his twin to help regulate his emotions, they get the better of him at times, despite his best efforts.
While enjoying monetary rewards, Stigandr is also possessed of a powerful wanderlust, desiring to see as much of the land as possible, never staying in one place for long. He sees the experience as half of the reward - a new discovery, a chance to improve himself. He understands the value of loyalty, and refuses to break an oath. Though he's had few friends in his lifetime, he clings fiercely to them.
His only constant companion is the enormous raven that accompanies him at all times. An immense creature, the size of an eagle, he often circles or perches overhead, but never strays far. He speaks, though only ever in Stigandr's head, and shares his keen intellect, though often plays the part of a simple creature in front of strangers. Stigandr calls the bird Sigmundr, after his brother - but whether the raven is actually his deceased twin in a new form, or merely some form of trickery, he still doesn't know. The thought keeps him awake some nights, but for the most part, he treats Sigmundr exactly as he did his twin while alive.
Questions and notes:
- Will the Stranger mythic path be allowed? It's in the Mythic Hero's Handbook by Legendary Games, also available as a standalone pdf. I'd be happy to send you the path information if you need it. If you'll allow it, that will be his eventual mythic path.
- Stigandr has the Vizier class from Dreamscarred Press' upcoming Akashic Mysteries book; the class is available as a standalone pdf, as well as on d20pfsrd.com. (It's also, as I discovered, amazing as a gestalt class.)
- HeroLab tried to use the raven familiar (Tiny size) for the animal companion; I've used the stats for an eagle companion instead, as per the class text. I'll also have a statblock available for when 'Sigmundr' increases in size.
- I've tried to leave some ambiguity in the background, hopefully giving you some stuff to play with.
- Stigandr's raven companion could actually be his brother, back from the dead (in a way), or he could just be mad. I haven't decided yet, and would be happy to discuss that with you.
- I'll gladly answer any questions about my character's build, and if I'm wrong on something, I'll correct it.
- How strict will you be on flying animal companions in battle? In order to full attack, will I need to make a fly check every round to hover; that kind of thing.
- Depending on party composition, I might make some final changes to Stigandr's build, if selected and allowed. In particular, his attunement path may chance (Ruler in a caster-heavy party; Seer in a melee-heavy one).
- Stigandr's role is a heavy-hitting skirmisher. He has a lot of abilities that allow him to get into the thick of things quickly, stop enemies from escaping him, and punish them for daring to try. This is a very different build for me, but one I'm hoping to have a lot of fun with.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned this earlier, but Neve is probably going to go Hierophant, possibly Dual-Pathing with Champion or Archmage for... reasons. XD Please stick her under Hierophant for now, though.
Food for Thought: Inspired Spell and Spherecasting could get a bit weird. Maybe she could use IS as her way of casting from the normal Druid list?

Again, my character is done. Stats? Done. Story? Probably over done.
I'm not sure what category I should be in, as I'm pretty flexible on my path. I've got a character that fits well under Hierophant, Champion, Guardian, and Marshal and I'm willing to take whichever other people don't for the sake of diversity.
this is why i dislike these player made lists *twiddles thumbs nervously* i don't want to get overlooked because a potential player put me on the wrong list
*holds up a large sign for the GM*

I am here. I did not see any questions to reply to although, as has been the case before, I may have missed a question. If you have a question, it would probably be best to post it again so that you can ensure that I did not skip over it accidentally.
I was simply looking for a general status update since not much had been posted for a bit, don;t want to see the thread die. :P
I mean look, you posted and then several people posted in turn. :D
