The Café looks really good, I had to look up and see what Peranakan cuisine was, but after some reading I decided I would certainly try it! Or to quote a cat I know, "Nom Nom Nom"
Hey, I didn't say you could be a good bard I just said you could be a bard.
Enjoy your swim! I was happy that today was 15 degrees warmer than yesterday... when it was -1 Fahrenheit.

Eh I'm not too fond of Peranakan cuisine since I can't really take the spice, besides they have little to no western food, only a roast turkey, small selection of cheese and ham and some salad.
The Italian side of the family might not be too happy...since they aren't very good with spiciness either, it might be taken as a snub.
It's about half Chinese food, half Peranakan food.
Yeah that sounds cold. I'd huddle in blankets and refuse to pop out.

Life would be easier for me if we just went to Oscar's like we did the year ago. There were no complaints about the food, only about finding the place. Two jokers got lost and I had to pick them up. And one joker even asked me to go through the shopping mall instead of walking outside.
I am not that familiar with the area that I'd trust my navigation skills if we had to go indoors, since I need to see landmarks to find the place.
And you know I have no sense of direction. Granted if it is food related checks, I get a circumstance bonus of +5 or so... =P

All these pictures of food hanging out on the sides of these websites are making me hungry again, but I already brushed my teeth. :(
Seamus Passeri
Lol, It's just making me wish I had brought more food to work.
Over the last three days I ate too many leftovers. So I need to get my bloodsugar back down. The easiest way to do that is limit carbs and eat less. So here I sit, looking at food on line, wishing I had brought more.
The good news, is I'm off Friday and Saturday. I'm headed to Columbus, where my daughters live and will eat out with them after watching the new Star Wars movie tomorrow night err, tonight? err, Friday evening.
Yeah, so much for paying attention to how much I eat. I could have a salad right?
Speaking of food, I plan on making this recipe for my wife Sunday evening, she loves cashew chicken.

Leonard, spend more time with us as we talk food shop. You might get fatter listening ;)
Since you'll probably start feeling hungry hearing our food talk and start nomming =)

What you need to do, Seamus, is to start eating fruits(oranges) or chickpeas. You'll get full fast without adding excessive calories. Of course you'll probably end up giving up a lot of gas or using the toilet since both items I suggested contain a lot of Fibre.
About the one cashew Ramen, technically Ramen is supposed to be a soup. But since Chinese have fried noodles, I suppose you could stir fry ramen and it'd work out as well.
I've also ordered a bowl of rich pork bone ramen for myself now.
Seamus Passeri
ok, maybe the chickpeas, but I don't like oranges enough and I don't need the sugar in them.
I do the same with carrots. I just didn't have any at the house and didn't have time to stop on the way to work. I got behind, thus forgetting the book.
I know Ramen is soup, but I like to drain the broth and use it as a base for stirfry, instead of rice. sort of a shortcut lo mein.
So did your dish have the pork-belly and eggs? OF course that looks delicious even with just the scallions, mushrooms and bok choy!
Just a Mort
|
Carrots honestly you won't get full very much.
Mine came with pork slices(not sure which part- looked too lean to be belly). Egg too.
The word lo mien comes from the word Lao mian, which means pulled noodles, so doing it with rice is uhh... Culturally ruining the cuisine.
Practically speaking, it'd probably work anyway, fry noodles, fry rice.. Anything goes! Though noodles are more likely to need some gravy as opposed to rice.
Of course a purist would say you just mangled chinese cuisine :P
Just a Mort

Though the worst case of food mangling I've heard of was from TL and his cream cheese wontons. What the heck?!
You don't see me adding chilli sauce instead of tomato sauce to my spaghetti, do you?
Well, except by accident because the bottles looked alike...
Seamus Passeri
ok, I'll confess, I'm not much for being culturally sensitive when it comes to my food. For instance, I know that I'm supposed to order white rice with any stir-fry dishes. So the rice can absorb the flavors. That stir fried rice is what you do with leftover rice for lunch. But I still order fried rice with my favorite dishes.
The Ramen is something I have in the pantry, but I don't keep rice. I know, I know, heresy, what can I say. and I don't particularly enjoy rice.
So when I do stir fry I tend to serve it over ramen noodles instead of rice. Of course my stir fry isn't probably culturally proper either. It's just oil, ginger, garlic, strips of meat first then vegetables added with soy sauce splashed liberally throughout. I used to use an electric wok, now I just use a large cast iron skillet.
Was TL talking about Crab Rangoons? Their delicious!
Just a Mort

Crab Rangoons... Well they make me twitchy, but I'll try em. If I judge they are good they'll fall into the look weird but taste good category of foods.
We eat fried rice with other dishes too, and how you describe yourself frying noodles is how we do it. Oil, garlic till slightly brown, add other ingredients, fry, then add noodles and condiments last.
You may consider using fish sauce (known as fish gravy here) or oyster sauce instead of all soy sauce for more umami. Too much soy sauce can also be a little sourish.
Seamus Passeri
I have an old recipe That I cooked several times in the nineties. for chicken lo mien that uses white pepper, oyster sauce, bok choy and rice wine if I'm remembering correctly, those were the ingredients that I didn't have in my pantry :-).
For several years my wife preferred lo mien to a stir fry served over rice. After a while she started ordering other dishes at restaurants. So I started cooking other types of stir fry.
Once I got comfortable with my wok, I just cheated and served everything over Ramen noodles. Not that I cook stir fry a lot, but it can be quick and easy which is a perk for me.
Seamus Passeri
I think TL was talking about these. And I don't really like cheese all that much you know... Pathfinder cheese being the exception =P
Same thing, just a little different recipe and the fold is different.
Traditionally wontons are made from ground pork and prawn.
We have traditional wontons soup also. Then there is a fried wonton call potsticker's yeah, their delicious, but I've never fixed them. However I did just save the recipe :-)

Rice wine features quite a lot in Chinese cooking. Some people are noodle people(me!), while some people are rice people(my BF!).
Stir fry is definitely a healthy way of cooking food, and I started baking stuff cos I'd save on washing so I get quick and easy too.

Pot stickers are Guo tie, a different kind of dumpling made from pork and chives.

-18 degrees is sick. At least no one is going to run away in that kind of weather. I hope. Hypothermia becomes a very real danger...
Seamus Passeri
actually we had two boys go out a window two winters ago around 1 AM. when it was -10 F/-23 C.
We have the windows bolted so they could only open so far. The day before, when they were supposed to be cleaning, they had worked the bolt loose when staff wasn't watching carefully...
They got about six miles down the road and were hiding in a 24hr. laundromat when the sheriff found them.

Talk about bad decision making. You couldn't pay me to get out in weather that cold.
Just the thought of it makes me shiver.
Vincent Arazeiros
I misread that Robert was eating a slaad. Gave me pause for a minute while I reread salad.
Leonard Giles Neithan
That is quite cold. It's in the 20's most days here in Maryland, though there are occasional days where it's randomly much warmer.
I like the cold though, one of the reasons I'm going to college farther north.
Let's see now, I suppose I'll get a number of cheap things then.
How about four pearls of power?
Available?: 1d100 ⇒ 76
Available?: 1d100 ⇒ 43
Available?: 1d100 ⇒ 89
Available?: 1d100 ⇒ 73
And I'll definitely take that wand of blade tutor's spirit.
Do I have to roll for this?: 1d100 ⇒ 21
And what about those stagger proof boots?
Available?: 1d100 ⇒ 79
Man, being limited to 2k is hard. I can't even upgrade the cloak. That's not even half the money I have available. Hmm...I'm still not really sure what to do.
GM Mort
You have to roll for everything. End of Book 3 you get 8k limits to work with.
GM Mort
The 8k gp limits still involves rolling, btw.
As I said you could just take crafting feats and craft your @ss off. No harm in that(except maybe to your character's ego-which is none of my business as a GM). I'm not like saying you don't have time to craft, in addition to not allowing you access to any supplies at all.
GM Mort
Forgot to tell you lot. Going running with my BF.
There's nothing like outrunning him(psst it isn't hard) to give yourself some motivation to run faster =)
Leonard Giles Neithan
Much as I want to take the crafting feat because it would make a more powerful character, I think I'm going to decline that option.
Good luck running, the moments when you're at the end where you can't really feel anything are the best part of any day.
Actually, I think any day in which it rains probably has better moments.
Vincent Arazeiros
What about take the crafting feat, and after boat ride retrain it for 350gp and 5 days time? :D
I don't get a lvl7 feat or I'd do it lol.
GM Mort
You won't have 5 days once you land. I figure I've given you a 7 days break that wasn't in the mod, so the rest of the AP will be "You have 24 h to save the world" style.
Not as if you can't afford to pay for your own restorations etc by then.
GM Mort
My BF outran me =( I need to train more at the gym!
And not eat so much for breakfast. Got stitches. BTW I can't do anything without breakfast.
Usually I don't push myself that hard, that's the problem. I think keeping that pace would require the treadmill to be set to 9-10,instead of the 8.5 I usually paddy paw around with.
Seamus Passeri
I misread that Robert was eating a slaad. Gave me pause for a minute while I reread salad.
Mmmmm Slaad...
We ended up going to a BBQ joint, so not salad, pulled pork, probably closer to slaad...
Then watched 'last Jedi' and drove home 45 miles in the snow.
Still processing what I thought of the movie, may as well go see what's happening in game :-)
Leonard Giles Neithan
Stiches are largely actually about stretching your abs properly. Or at least that's what I've been told, I've never actually tried stretching my abs before running.
GM Mort
If a creature with this special attack begins its turn with an opponent grappled in its mouth (see Grab), it can attempt a new combat maneuver check (as though attempting to pin the opponent). If it succeeds, it swallows its prey, and the opponent takes bite damage. Unless otherwise noted, the opponent can be up to one size category Smaller than the swallowing creature. Being swallowed causes a creature to take damage each round. The amount and type of damage varies and is given in the creature’s statistics. A swallowed creature keeps the grappled condition, while the creature that did the swallowing does not. A swallowed creature can try to cut its way free with any light slashing or piercing weapon (the amount of cutting damage required to get free is equal to 1/10 the creature’s total hit points), or it can just try to escape the grapple. The Armor Class of the interior of a creature that swallows whole is normally 10 + 1/2 its natural armor bonus, with no modifiers for size or Dexterity. If a swallowed creature cuts its way out, the swallowing creature cannot use swallow whole again until the damage is healed. If the swallowed creature escapes the grapple, success puts it back in the attacker’s mouth, where it may be bitten or swallowed again.
12 Ac, 12 Hp for stats of swallow whole. DR applies.
It also has an ability to let it...swallow whole faster. If you get my drift. Ahem.
I'm systematically botting exploration of the whole place, and opening every door, else you start complaining about loot again.
Seamus Passeri
Look! Complaints about loot!
Yeah, but at least it wasn't me complaining this time :-)
Seamus is more concerned with the stuff that looks good together
GM Mort
Someone will complain.
This slender light blade lies within a wooden container that serves as both its scabbard and hiding place.
Benefit: You can draw the blade from the cane as a swift action (or a free action if you have the Quick Draw feat). An observer must make a DC 20 Perception check to realize an undrawn sword cane is a weapon rather than a walking stick; the DC decreases to 10 if the observer is able to handle the weapon. You can use the Weapon Finesse feat to apply your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier to attack rolls with a sword cane sized for you, even though it isn’t a light weapon. You can’t wield a sword cane in two hands in order to apply 1-1/2 times your Strength modifier to damage.
The issue is that you can enchant the blade, but did you enchant the cane itself? Because for double weapons, you can't just enchant the weapon, you need to enchant both sides as a separate enchantment.
Vincent Arazeiros
I was going by what you told me when I made char and asked for sword cane rapier:

Your swordcane when unsheathed is a rapier. If sheathe is on you get club damage :p
Didn't sound like double weapon so I enchanted to sword cane not a specific part. But if so that's fine I'd use the Morningstar and just not add frost.
Gotta run again
GM Mort
Ah ok I was looking for that msg honestly but couldn't find it.
Again my box is full of...nevermind.
Oh realism police are quite cute! *huggles realism police*
Hitting things with handle of a weapon would start counting as improvised.
Oh whatever. Wont' break the game having both 1d6 stick enchanted and rapier enchanted at the same time, though it's a better deal then enchanting morningstars since you get the crit range of a rapier.
Should you however start thinking of using both the stick and the cane(rapier part) at the same time then it should be counted as a double weapon because we're working with dual wielding rules.
Yes, someone thought about doing it
You're asking a GM who doesn't you know...watch youtube videos of medieval weapons.
Though I have handled a dao, and dagger before for set weapon drills.
Leonard Giles Neithan
Realism police are quite cute? Cute?!?! This is an outrage...
Lol.
Sword canes did actually exist, but they were legitimately awful as weapons, since it's really hard to get a big enough blade inside a functional walking stick. And if you're just going to make it a nonfuctional walking stick, what you've then got is a regular sword inside a wooden sheathe. So you end up with what are essentially big metal toothpicks. I guess if I was a Victorian Gentleman walking down a dark alley and someone with a knife walked up to me, I'd be able to threaten him back. But if I then ran him through, he'd definitely have time to stab me a lot before dying. And if I ran into someone with a sword, I'd have a hard time parrying with such a small weapon.
Seriously though, rapiers are defined by long blades that are optimized for thrusting but have cutting capacity. They also generally had elaborate hand protection. A typical rapier had the same weight as a typical longsword (though it requires significantly more strength to use a rapier, because it's one handed), while sword canes were smaller than smallswords.
GM Mort
Combat scabbards are a thing in pathfinder.
Pathfinder is not an interpretation of reality, and as a pathfinder GM, I don't really look at the realism of things overly much.
Like there were some discussions involving guns and firearms in Reign of Winter. Sure the author took artistic license, but I'm not a history buff to know that anyway, nor do I care, since at the end of the day, it's a fantasy game.
GM Mort
I did honestly think that rapier type weapons were lighter then other bladed weapons since my friend who was into fencing said an epee weighed 500g?
Just a Mort
|
About reality police being cute...
I told the party I'm a tad whimsical.
That's the Zip part of me btw. My cheerfulness and good humor was generally passed on to Ziphora.
Generally my characters are fragments of my personality.(Think the Founder, and Nefris, Lienna, and Safiya - created from fragments of the founders soul in Neverwinter nights 2:Mask of the Betrayer)
So I suppose some fragments should really creep people out...
Just a Mort

Robert! Here's our latest blasphemy of Western food!
My mom is using spaghetti to cook Laksa!
Leonard Giles Neithan
I get that pathfinder isn't an interpretation of reality, I've come to accept that. I still enjoy making fun of it when it isn't really correct, though.
An epee is essentially a practice weapon for a smallsword, which technically evolved from rapiers, but is quite different. Here's a video with visual examples, if you're interested. Rapiers have about the same weight as most one handed weapons, which is about two and a half pounds.
Also, as my scimitar is a one handed weapon, I can't use it while swallowed.
