GM Mort |

Are you ok Leonard? As in are you sick or something? Sleeping through dinner...eh...doesn't sound quite right.

Leonard Giles Neithan |

Not sick, I was just tired. Christmas shopping had me up early and I normally like to sleep during the day, so when I finally did go to sleep I didn't wake up.

Leonard Giles Neithan |

Merry christmas Mort!

Vincent Arazeiros |

Merry Christmas!
The alchemist thing is some discovery that let's you convert delivery method. I haven't used it or played one so you'd have to check yourself lol.

Merry Christmas!
ATTENTION GAMERS:
After Raising Claude, and paying for Restorations for him and Seamus, as well as buying *two* new Wands of CLW...
...each PC receives 13,016.73gp

GM Mort |

Woo that's some crazy Christmas shopping to be done =)
If you have a week actually the cheaper way would be just to resummon Claude as a familiar costing 200 gp x wizard level. You get to skip on restorations that way too.

![]() |

Yeah, I am not sure that would work - using the 'get a new familiar' rules implies (although it doesn't explicitly state) that it is a *new* familiar, not the old one in a new body.
If you are happy to rule that the latter is true, however, I am more than happy to go along with it :-)

GM Mort |

Here's the key to the whole thing. I can give you the one week, for you to do your research and get your restorations, though mod as written you should have been hurrying from one place to the other.
Since it sort of jumbles the order a little - you can do the research - but you will not be going into the results until you start on book 3 (boarding the ship and sailing) proper.
Grey area honestly. How do you want me to rule it, Howard? There are no rules saying yes or no on this matter.

GM Mort |

Though 200gp x Wizard level is really pretty cheap for something that is probably more optimized then the average PFS fighter ;)

![]() |

I don't mind; I mean, I have already budgeted for the Raise option; being told that the cheaper option is fine, would just be an added bonus :-)
Either way, I think that taking a week off is probably a good idea - after all, we are unlikely to randomly run into a Cleric who can cast Restoration once we hit the road, and it would suck if there were negative levels kicking around for the entirety of the next book.

![]() |

Though 200gp x Wizard level is really pretty cheap for something that is probably more optimized then the average PFS fighter ;)
Yes, well... in PFS I once met a Barbarian with 7 Strength, who then became rather testy when, for some reason, they proved ineffective in melee combat with their greataxe...

GM Mort |

It would amuse me for you guys to have negative levels for the rest of the next book, but I am not an evil GM.
Anyway I ran out of time. I need to get my party started. I'll get back to you later, or at the shop if possible. I'm sorry.

GM Mort |

Well there was a case of a knife getting knocked behind the washing machine(thanks-clumsy me) which caused some consternation, but yeah, party was great, everyone said the food was great! And they liked the steaks!
See? Always get the right vendors the job =)
There were no complaints about any of the food items not tasting good, though there was quite some mutton left over. (I can't really cut down on the mutton since it comes on a whole lamb leg)
My complaint about the steak: When I ordered the communal platter of rib steak - I thought I was going to get 1 kg of ribs and 1 kg of steak. It turns out it's 1 kg of rib steak. Luckily there was enough for everyone. Having not enough food for everyone would be horribly embarrassing.
Funny things at the party: My brother ate the beef spaghetti even though he generally doesn't take beef. I think he wasn't paying attention to all my comments about that spaghetti should have been done with beef instead of pork all along...
I had a beer, ate fried rice, had spaghetti, ate mutton, beef, pork ribs and chicken wings, ate 2 slices of hazelnut praline log cake, two scoups of ice cream, an osmanthus ice jelly and generally made a happy pig of myself =)
Osmanthus ice jelly btw - is not something you'll find anywhere. It's a Mort made creation. Basically it was inspired by this, but instead I used ice jelly powder instead of konnyaku jelly powder, since I felt that the soft, smooth texture of ice jelly powder better compliments the light taste of the osmanthus flower.
Konnyaku jelly powder makes for chewier jellies, best used for stronger flavours such as canned longans

Leonard Giles Neithan |

I wish I could eat like that, I'd love to gain some weight. Sounds like it was fun, is there a similar new year's event?

GM Mort |

Chinese new year we're probably booking a restaurant and I know just the place =)
And down here I'm trying to lose weight =(
Clearly not happening in holiday season ;)

Leonard Giles Neithan |

I am very good at loosing weight, maybe you can eat for me and then we'll just switch?

GM Mort |

To push plot or not to push...there may be certain things people want to do in town.
I dunno. Still having Christmas feelies on me.

GM Mort |

For anality I will just start prepping the post itself - since it requires me to copy a large block of text and edit it. Then save it in my gmail box so I can...serve it, so to speak, even if I am outside.

Leonard Giles Neithan |

I'm 5'8 1/2'' and ~140-145 lbs with a body fat % in the range of 10-15%. I'm basically the definition of wiry, since I can see all my ribs when stretched out but also look fairly muscular when bunched up. Also, the right side of my body is stronger than the left from sports, which I'm probably never going to fully correct.
I'd suggest erring on the side of going it slow. Since it's the holiday season.

![]() |

I’m 5’1, 133 lbs. Get my drift about round? Body fat % is 37. I suppose I’m not totally out of condition since I can outrun my BF :P Again I personally feel that running in a way is a bit of mind over matter. If you think you can do it, you can.
But yeah I tend to the short and tubby side, since I’m a geeky nerd who spends her whole day on phone/on comp/in books. And is fond of good food =)
*Is so envious of Leonard*

Leonard Giles Neithan |

Hmm...I'd be unhappy with 37%, but I'm also male. Google tells me that women have a much higher normal body fat range, and that 37% is within the norm. At least, it is in the US.
I dunno that you need to be envious of me though, since I don't really enjoy eating at all. I guess meat is tasty, and desserts can be okay sometimes, but for the most part eating is just something I have to do to stay alive. You, on the other hand, get the joy of eating lots of tasty things, and I'm sure that gives you real and valuable happiness from time to time.
Also, running is definitively about determination, especially if you're not in a competitive event.

![]() |

Oh yeah, I’m not too happy about that 37% anyway so I’m working on it…well with questionable success. Firstly, I really should not be PBPing on the crosstrainer when I go to the gym during lunch time. I should be running. Heh. But we’ll chalk that one out on a will save failure…
We really shouldn’t talk about checking PBPs every 2 laps in the swimming pool either…
I love eating! I live to eat! And it makes me happy! If I’m stressed, I eat! Om Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom!
You’re the type that eats to live.
About sportiness: I have a fairly large competitive streak in me. Ask Robert, he knows =)
Now – I also have sucky dex (you did hear about knocking the knife behind the washing machine right?)
So for me its pretty pointless to pick up any kind of sport since I won’t have the dexterity to do it properly. Throw that basket ball into the hoop? Ooops, I missed. Hit the shuttlec*ck with the racket? Ooops I missed. So I don’t really do sports much.
Again the office has free gym membership, and I realized that I have a certain amount of energy that needs release – so I go to the gym almost everyday during lunch. Understandably since there isn’t anyone motivating me, I do jog and all that but I don’t really go push my limits or whatsoever. Out of scientific curiosity, I’m still trying to train myself to swim the breadth of an Olympic sized swimming pool underwater (only managed ¾ thus far – I could do it in the past but not now).

About me: I probably have semi-decent Str…dumped dex, average con, pumped all those ability points into int, then dumped wis and cha =) (Who needs wis and cha anyway ;))

About me: I probably have semi-decent Str…dumped dex, average con, pumped all those ability points into int, then dumped wis and cha =) (Who needs wis and cha anyway ;))
Wow and you were so offended that Seamus dumped a little intelligence...
Still working on him. Unfortunately I got a new book for Christmas, so I'm a little distracted.
Oathbringer from Brandon Sanderson's "Stormlight Archive" series...

![]() |

It's not my fault that I ended up with less then a 15 point buy, before adding in bonuses...
But really my dumped wis makes me curious about things I really shouldn't be looking at(like forbidden cheese), explains my lack of impulse control when I eat another marshmallow...
And my dumped Cha helps justify why I'm a grouchy badger whenever there are any violations of rules, and why I throw CRBs at people for rule violations.
No tact, ye know.

GM Mort |

Here's one on customer service...
I receive a txt from the Café we bought the hazelnut praline cake for yesterday’s Christmas party.
“Good day, I‘m present of TCC at Novena Square, May I check w u have u collected the hazelnut praline log cake?”
My text reply: Yes, it was eaten up yesterday.

GM Mort |

About the 7 companies? I just found out today from Company Secretary there was an error because the software I was using was outdated.
Needless to say, I'm rather pissed.
1)I had sent the documents to be submitted 9 days ago - why did it take so long for them to discover an error.
2)I was given no notice that the software I was using was outdated in the first place.
I'm hoping that the new software can load the files of the previous version and I don't have to redo everything or I am really, really screwed.

GM Mort |

You get whatever gear you think you should get, just roll your 1d100 to get it if it's magical.

Vincent Arazeiros |

Super busy with kids and Christmas but is it possible to travel to a larger town? Otherwise those 13kgp are going to be spent on lots of tiny things or save for later.
Or maybe pay a spellcaster to teleport one or more of us to a shopping center and back? With a grocery list.

Leonard Giles Neithan |

Agreed, I'd like to buy some expensive things.
I'll have more time to post and level up later today.

GM Mort |

Now the thing is - should you have been given teleport - what is stopping you from teleporting to Katheer straight and arriving there 2 levels early?
I have already prepped book 4 - so I can run it, skipping the entire book 3. Whether that is a good idea or not, is...eh...well.
I don't see the issue gear wise - since Howard just picked up craft wondrous and I suspect there will be at least a month of downtime on the ship - since sailing to Cassomir from Thrushmoor will take 3 months, and I expect you guys with your usual efficiency to finish whatever stuff needs to be done double quick time, so you should have plenty of time to craft along the way.
I don't really care for allowing teleport - because I don't think you need it.

GM Mort |

The passage to Cassomir is by ship, 90 days. At the end of it, you hit Cassomir. No stops in big cities in between. Then I'll ask Howard to pull out his books so he can give the stats of Cassomir city, because the module writers, in their great wisdom decided not to give them, in order to save space.

Leonard Giles Neithan |

If you want me to contribute to the team more, take a look at the spoiler and let me know if there's something I've missed. I assumed craft wondrous on all my items, Howard, please let me know if I can't do that. I haven't rolled for item availability yet because I want to know how much crafting is available first.
I also have a question for Mort. Is it possible to make/buy an item of escape artist using this table? That table is notorious for being completely fricking ridiculous, but I think the entry about skill items is generally tame and reasonable. It doesn't seem like the sort of thing you'd allow, but it's worth an ask. I'm not 100% on what I'd do with the gold if it's not allowed.
Belt of Physical Perfection +2, 5,000
Dusty Rose Prism Ioun Stone, 2,500
Cracked Pale Green Ioun Stone, 2,000
Cloak of Resistance Upgrade, 1,500
1st level Pearls of Power x3, 1,500
Stagger Proof Boots, 1,000
Wand of Blade Tutor's Spirit, 750
Pendant of the Blood Scarab, 500
I'm not sure if it's be allowed, or if there's already an item for it, but a tame and reasonable use of this table, at least in my eyes, would be a +5 competence bonus to escape artist checks. Because, um, grappling and stuff. It would cost 2,500 at +5, which gets halved down to 1,250 by craft wondrous, which is the rest of the gold I have.
Explaining some of those choices.
Belt of Physical Perfection over Belt of Dex. I think my next big purchase would likely be another +1 AC, which costs the same as the difference in price between these two. That'd be functionally +5% to my survivability (actually a bit less, because AC doesn't help with fireball), as compared to the more than 10% increase in hp from this belt. The belt also gives +1 to fort saves, which is very nice. It's clearly better than what's already widely considered a very good use of gold, and what I think would be my alternative.
Stagger Proof Boots. These are cheaper than a second level pearl of power used to recall bladed dash, and I consider eating a swift action better than having to cast bladed dash. Pearl of power is better because it lets me recall other second level spells, but I don't think it's nearly twice as good, which it's cost says it is. To be honest, I'm not sure I actually like bladed dash at all at this level, although I suppose it's good with haste (but then I'm burning through spells). In any case, these let me get good burst damage while also moving, which I can't do as reliably otherwise, and I think are well worth the gold.
3 Pearls of Power and Blood Scarab. I kindof want a fourth pearl, because then I'd be more comfortable prepping just one shocking grasp and planning on recalling it an average of three times. I currently plan on two memorizations and two recalls, since I want access to four castings a day. Another pearl would let me also prep true strike, or maybe something else like vanish or magic missile, which are good spells, increasing versatility. I think that's the real benefit of another pearl, even though it might at first look like an item primarily about attrition. I'm rapidly reaching a point where I'm not going to run out of spells all that fast; counting the three pearls I have five more spells than I did last level, and I felt okay (not great, not bad) about the amount of casting I had for the important combats. But, in the end, the blood scarab lets me more reliably kill things that are supposed to die, and since burst damage is my job, I value that over the increased versatility of the pearl. The blood scarab deals 1d6 points of damage, which sucks, but I don't think that makes it a bad item.
I think the other items are self explanatory as good, cheap, static bonuses. My static stats are kindof bad, so enhancing them is worth a lot. I'm extremely interested in boosting my attack, which is going to take some work over the next few levels, hence the expensive ioun stone.
-------
As for my feat, I've been looking at extra arcana: empowered magic. It's definitely not in the same league as empower spell the metamagic feat at this level, since intensify spell is better than empower spell and I don't need both. I've also been looking at step up, extra arcane pool, and other extra arcana options. The notable extra arcana, I feel, are step up, wand wielder, arcane accuracy, and spell blending (heroism). I also have access to hexes as feats, but I don't think they're as good right now.
Spell blending for heroism is amazing. For an additional investment of 3k gold on a rod, I can get 140 minutes of +2 to attacks and saves (and also skills? What a spell...). That's extremely good, but it also means I'm prepping heroism, which isn't haste, which is therefore suddenly feeling very outclassed. I'm not sure if our bard friend is going to be spamming haste a lot, but even if he is, I can do it too. There's little limit to the amount of haste that is enough haste. Haste is just an astoundingly good spell, and as much as I want that tasty +2 to everything forever, I think that haste is better. Heroism is worth the feat slot, but it's not worth the spell slot, not yet, anyway, and picking up spell blending later gives access to a second spell off the wizard list anyway, which is useful.
Wand wielder can probably do something good, but to be honest, I'm not exactly sure what. And anyway, this isn't a harry potter novel.
Arcane accuracy is fine. I see it as a miniature version of empowered magic that I have the option of using repeatably at a high cost. Both help me nova, and I definitely wouldn't be using arcane accuracy more than once or twice a day, since my pool points are very taxed. Arcane accuracy makes me feel safer novaing on someone since I can still do it again if I need to, but if I wanted to feel safe I wouldn't be an adventurer. I'll take the more powerful option.
Step up is fine, but Vincent has freakishly long arms already, and I prefer to be next to him when possible. I want to take lunge at 9th level, which makes this even less necessary. It's good against archers and polearm users, and it has some utility against spellcasters, but that's not really my job. Vincent has long reach and does melee controllish things, I'm more interested in being able to kill monsters that need to die.
Hexes seem to be not good, since I already have spells that can let me target saving throws. Glitterdust seems much better than the slumber hex, for example, and I think memorizing a second level spell is less investment than burning a feat. Flight is great, the rest I don't love.
I actually considered another feat for a while: weapon focus. My attack bonus is lower than I'd like it to be by about two points (heroism? Nah, haste is still better), and this would solve that problem. But I almost just refuse to put weapon focus on a character on principle, since feats are better than that. My attack bonus is going up by two or three this level (depending on if I get all the magic items I want, 1 bab, 1 dex belt, 1 ioun stone). That doesn't count blade tutor's spirit or other new buffs I have access to (haste?), which I'll get some utility out of. AC isn't increasing that fast, meaning I'm catching up. In a couple levels, when I get access to heroism, I'd seriously regret weapon focus.
So I think Empowered Magic is what I'm going with. It lets me do what my class is good at.

GM Mort |

Pendant of blood scarab takes the same slot of your amulet of natural armor. You will need to choose which one you wish to use.
Wand of Blade Tutor’s spirit needs to be made with craft wand, which Howard does not have. The rest I’ll leave to Howard to see if he can make the item (5+ CL), with his spellcraft take 10 check (Probably a yes).
There’s some number crunching involved since for each requirement that he does not meet – for example for the cracked pale green ioun stone, the CL is 12, so the DC would be 17. However, since Howard is not a 12th level caster, he fails to meet the requirement so the DC is increased by 5, to 22.
Howard will probably try to do accelerated crafting which will increase the DC by a further 5, to 27. Again, there’s stuff like crafter’s fortune that he can prepare to help him with that kind of thing.
To create magic items, spellcasters use special feats which allow them to invest time and money in an item’s creation. At the end of this process, the spellcaster must make a single skill check (usually Spellcraft, but sometimes another skill) to finish the item. If an item type has multiple possible skills, you choose which skill to make the check with. The DC to create a magic item is 5 + the caster level for the item. Failing this check means that the item does not function and the materials and time are wasted. Failing this check by 5 or more results in a cursed item.
Note that all items have prerequisites in their descriptions. These prerequisites must be met for the item to be created. Most of the time, they take the form of spells that must be known by the item’s creator (although access through another magic item or spellcaster is allowed). The DC to create a magic item increases by 5 for each prerequisite the caster does not meet. The only exception to this is the requisite item creation feat, which is mandatory. In addition, you cannot create potions, spell-trigger, or spell-completion magic items without meeting its prerequisites.
While item creation costs are handled in detail below, note that normally the two primary factors are the caster level of the creator and the level of the spell or spells put into the item. A creator can create an item at a lower caster level than her own, but never lower than the minimum level needed to cast the needed spell. Using metamagic feats, a caster can place spells in items at a higher level than normal.
Magic supplies for items are always half of the base price in gp. For many items, the market price equals the base price. Armor, shields, weapons, and items with value independent of their magically enhanced properties add their item cost to the market price. The item cost does not influence the base price (which determines the cost of magic supplies), but it does increase the final market price.
In addition, some items cast or replicate spells with costly material components. For these items, the market price equals the base price plus an extra price for the spell component costs. The cost to create these items is the magic supplies cost plus the costs for the components. Descriptions of these items include an entry that gives the total cost of creating the item.
The creator also needs a fairly quiet, comfortable, and well-lit place in which to work. Any place suitable for preparing spells is suitable for making items. Creating an item requires 8 hours of work per 1,000 gp in the item’s base price (or fraction thereof), with a minimum of at least 8 hours. Potions and scrolls are an exception to this rule; they can take as little as 2 hours to create (if their base price is 250 gp or less). Scrolls and potions whose base price is more than 250 gp, but less than 1,000 gp, take 8 hours to create, just like any other magic item. The character must spend the gold at the beginning of the construction process. Regardless of the time needed for construction, a caster can create no more than one magic item per day. This process can be accelerated to 4 hours of work per 1,000 gp in the item’s base price (or fraction thereof) by increasing the DC to create the item by 5.
The caster can work for up to 8 hours each day. He cannot rush the process by working longer each day, but the days need not be consecutive, and the caster can use the rest of his time as he sees fit. If the caster is out adventuring, he can devote 4 hours each day to item creation, although he nets only 2 hours’ worth of work. This time is not spent in one continuous period, but rather during lunch, morning preparation, and during watches at night. If time is dedicated to creation, it must be spent in uninterrupted 4-hour blocks. This work is generally done in a controlled environment, where distractions are at a minimum, such as a laboratory or shrine. Work that is performed in a distracting or dangerous environment nets only half the amount of progress (just as with the adventuring caster).
Boarding the ship is also considered as work performed at the rate of the adventuring crafter due to distractions of the waves etc.

GM Mort |

I don’t care for custom magic items. You'd have to be really persuasive and probably use some blackmail to get me to agree to it ;) In part is my conservativeness in sticking to already published material, but there's also this....
Because some things can break the game. Here’s an example.
There are more of course.
This would help with escape artist.
But its an armor enchant.
So would this, but by then you’d probably want a ring of freedom of movement.

GM Mort |

What you want to do with your character is up to you. I will not comment on it =)
Well ok maybe a bit:
Glitterdust won't let you CDG, slumber hex will. Also Glitterdust they get saves every round, slumber hex once you fail your first one you're screwed. Again Glitterdust has AE, slumber hex does not. So really, up to you.
