GM WhtKnt's Into the Borderlands, Table 1 (Inactive)

Game Master WhtKnt

The Borderlands… an untamed wild region far flung from the comforts and protection of civilization. A lone fortified keep is the only bastion of good desperately striving to maintain the forces of chaos at bay. But evil is everywhere, lurking in dark caves, fetid swamps, and forlorn forests. Bands of cutthroat brigands and ruthless tribes of humanoids eager to clash with the forces of good rove the region. The Borderlands hold many secret wondrous locations, and the opportunities for fame, prestige, and fortune are plentiful. But equally abundant are the perils, risks, and challenges to those brave enough to explore the wilds.

Sharpen your swords and axes. Purchase your iron rations and tinderboxes... and don’t forget to bring at least one 10-foot pole. Adventure awaits those with the mettle to confront chaos in the Borderlands!

I've got you Scranford; look under Possibles.

No problem. I just expected to be under "rolled stats". Working on the character now.

Here is Scranford's character:

Wanted to link up a character with the region history. What year is it in Faerun for the game?

Dark Archive

I've been giving that some consideration. I've decided to go with 1494 DR, which would be the current year, according to all sources I have seen. This makes it easier on people trying to build backstories and such, since most materials reference that year.

I've got a bit too much on my plate at the moment, so unfortunately I'm going to have to withdraw my application.

I know you already have me as (mostly) complete, but I figured I'd go ahead and throw my character up on a Paizo profile. That seems to be what all the cool kids are doing. http://paizo.com/people/ShadNo/profile

Now he has a name and a slightly more fleshed-out backstory.

Liberty's Edge

I noticed and somehow missed someone elses halfling rogue, so I will submit this new character, a forest gnome ranger with an odd name...lol

4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 5, 6) = 15 = 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 1) = 16 = 15

Well, these are... interesting. I think I will have to think it over a little. An elf or a half-elf probably, a bladesinger (I think they are included in one of the books that are allowed, yes?) with or without some eldritch knight or a dual-wielding fighter/rogue possibly.

Oh, by the way, a question: On estimate, what level are we looking to reach if all goes well and the PbP withstands the ravages of time?

Zaradar the Skylord
LN Male Half-orc Sage Bard
17.16.13.12.10.17

★Has a dream of man-powered flight, experiments with glider-like devices for show and personal satisfaction. Screams madly like an orc jumping off cliffs strapped to odd contraptions to the delight of onlookers
★Defining work is a song about the principles of flight, in the form of a bizarre creative story. It has also found audience with scholars since some sections were written to serve as mnemonics for the blueprints that enable construction of certain hinge mechanisms
★Suffered a major embarrassment when a crowd of thousands witnessed one of his failed gliders, as he plunged to within an inch of his life
★Carries an ancient lyre supposedly formed from petrified wood plucked from the Anauroch by a mysterious airship captain he claims to have befriended
★His muse is the view from the highest mountaintop he has scaled in the Snowflake range, the mountains in general feature heavily in most of his work. Experienced climber
★Expert with throwing hand-axes, both for show and deadly combat

When you attempt to learn or recall a piece of lore, if you do not know that information, you often know where and from whom you can obtain it. Usually, this information comes from a library, scriptorium, university, or a sage or other learned person or creature. Your DM might rule that the knowledge you seek is secreted away in an almost inaccessible place, or that it simply cannot be found. Unearthing the deepest secrets of the multiverse can require an adventure or even a whole campaign.

The initial two adventures should carry the party to 5th or maybe 6th level. After that point, I have plenty of classic modules that I can convert to keep things going.

4d6 - 1 ⇒ (4, 1, 4, 2) - 1 = 10
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (3, 5, 1, 3) - 1 = 11

Con 11
Int 12
Wis 15 --> 16
Cha 10

Ghostwise Halfling Monk (Kensai). Uses spear as main weapon.

Skills: Acrobatics, History, Religion, Insight

Background: Acolyte. Devout follower of the halfling pantheon.
Personality: I see omens in every event and action. The gods try to speak to us, we just need to listen.
Ideal: Faithful. I trust my deities to lead my actions.
Bond: Everything I do is for the common halfling.
Flaw: My piety sometimes leads me to blindly trust those who claim to worship my pantheon.

I see that there's another halfling Monk build. I enjoy it when there's two PCs of the same class or race (or both!) as it really highlights the differences in characters beyond the mechanics of the game. There's also some other halfling submissions. Here's hoping for a whole party of halflings! And maybe a gone or dward or two. :)

I am interested, and will see what I can put together! I actually played a PbP Pathfinder conversion of Keep on the Borderlands briefly--perhaps I will rehash that character.

4d6 - 3 ⇒ (5, 4, 3, 3) - 3 = 12
4d6 - 4 ⇒ (4, 4, 5, 6) - 4 = 15
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 1) - 1 = 18
4d6 - 3 ⇒ (6, 3, 5, 3) - 3 = 14
4d6 - 4 ⇒ (5, 4, 4, 5) - 4 = 14
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (6, 2, 2, 6) - 2 = 14

Wow, those are really good stats.

Okay, here's Tazo's submission, a Human (Illuskan) Bard. He's a former naval raider turned adventurer, best though of as a Skald--high charisma, high strength, headed to Valor Bard. Thanks for the opportunity!

Just so you know if I get picked this will be my 2nd game Play by Post.
Only found out about Play by Post a few weeks ago. I was picked for my first game just last night, so I thought I would try one in D&D 5e as well as a filler when the other one is waiting for people to post and vice versa.
I have been playing D&D for many years except 4th ed. were I went to Pathfinders. So 5th ed I have played a few times but not 100% with all the rules. so I might have some questions during play.
Thank you for your consideration.

I know quite a few of the applicants for this game. If you're one of the chosen, then no matter who else gets picked with you, there'll be someone who will help out. There's a lot of great people applying for this game.

Here is a rough outline of my probable submission.

Mmm, crunchy!:
Alignment: Neutral Good
Gender: Male
Race: High Elf
Class: Wizard (Bladesinger)
Ability Scores: Str 13 (+1) Dex 17 (+3) Con 15 (+2) Int 18 (+4) Wis 14 (+2) Cha 14 (+2)
Background: ?
Languages: Common, Elvish
Skills: Arcana, Insight, Perception, ?, ?

I do have a question though. If I choose Arcana and Insight as my class skills and choose Sage for my background, thus getting Arcana and History, does this mean that in place of the second Arcana proficiency, I can choose any other one skill to be proficient it? That is what a relevant entry in the Backgrounds section seem to indicate, but I thought to ask just in case.

Yes, absolutely.

In fact, the skills listed in the background section are optional. You can trade them out for whatever skills you want. Likewise, the two Languages/Tools proficiencies you get can be traded out for any languages or tools. Get two Languages but don't want them? Pick two tools instead, or one tool and one language. :)

Backgrounds are fully customizable. You can even use the traits, ideals, bonds, or flaws of any other background (or make up your own), and you can even trade out your background features (although if you make up your own, you'll need DM permission).

Indeed. I am also familiar with several of the applicants and they are a very helpful lot. Also, there are a lot of good characters here and I'm going to have a difficult choice ahead of me. I want to thank everyone for applying!

Here is MrStr4ng3's Character.

Mechanically he is done. Shadow sorcerer, I do wonder if I could refluff the ice spells to be more shadow or grave like however

@ Ya'Bo: A few things I noticed about your status you might want to look at.

Mage Armor is (13+Dex), there is no FF or Touch AC in 5e, and I'm not sure how you have 11 HP. As far as I can tell it should be 7?

I think I will roll for starting money. Here goes...

Starting funds: 4d4 ⇒ (4, 3, 4, 1) = 12 x 10 = 120

Alrighty then, here is my complete submission. :-)

Born to a sun elf warrior mage and a moon elf wizardess, Isandril -or Sand to his friends- is a noble-born scion of House Velahrn, a clan known for its members' talent for combining sword and spell. Possessed of an open mind, an adventurous nature and more than a little wanderlust, it is only to be expected that he has time and again gotten himself into trouble, though nothing too serious, much to his father's chagrin and his mother's amusement.

Of Books and Covers:
Standing just over five feet and ten inches tall and possessed of a slim but athletic build, Isandril is quick and agile and moves with the grace that is characteristic of his people. Handsome with fair skin and pale silvery-gold hair that reaches down to his shoulders, he combines traits from both sides of his ancestry. However, his eyes are probably his most prominent feature. Although not unheard of, they are uncommon even for one of his race; reminiscent of a moon elf's eyes but not quite the same, they are a vibrant violet color with what can best be described as golden flecks speckled through them.

The elven mage shows a preference for comfortable fitted clothing of good craftsmanship and elven design, more often than not complemented with a hooded cloak fastened in place with an ornate clearly dwarven-made clasp, and he is almost never seen without an elven-crafted sword with a slender straight blade resting in a fine scabbard by his left hip and a pouch of spell components hanging from his belt by his right, right next to a sheathed curved dagger.

An adventurer at heart and a curious one at that, even if this latter trait does result in his getting somewhat easily bored on occasion, Isandril goes where his heart -and sometimes spur of the moment- takes him, especially if the destination promises interesting finds, high adventure and the chance to hone his skills with both sword and spell. Friendly and kind, Sand enjoys the company of others, especially those he considers friends, and is quick to smile and joke. Almost as quick as he is to rise to the defense of such friends or simply those unable to fend for themselves. Not one to start a fight, the aspiring bladesinger will even try to defuse a situation before it gets too far, but if required he will not hesitate to use both spell and sword to defend himself.

That's why I re-use my alias's. Although this one is reused from one I've never posted with before. So I could even change the name.

You can rename them if they have under 10 posts. This will not help with many names, but you might have one or two you could do this to. I tend to just reuse names.

Celina was born in Waterdeep sixteen years ago. She made a living working in a frame shop and, in order to afford medicine and food for her siblings, began adept at running con games and shaving off coins when she sold items at a shop. Her attractiveness was distracting and she managed to do well for herself, though she felt guilty swindling those who were not too rich. However, she was found out by a city guard who saw through her ploys. She was driven out of town, but managed to give her siblings almost everything she had.

She hopes to remake herself by traveling to a place where no one knows her. She joined a caravan working as a cook and seamtress.

One night, bemoaning her lot, she came upon a dryad while walking in the forest. She spoke to it, and the creature said Celina could become an agent of the Fey. In exchange for the powers conferred to her, she would inform the Fey of what was happening on the Borderlands. With little hope of improving herself and honoured to be chosen by the Faerie Queen, Celina agreed. She returned to the caravan with new abilities that she has been using on others.

Background: Charlatan (I shave coins or forge documents.)

Bond: I swindled and ruined a person who didn’t deserve it. I seek to atone for my misdeeds but might never be able to forgive myself.
Flaw: I can’t resist swindling people who are more powerful than me.

Just a heads up, GM Star Drake, but variant humans are not allowed.

She traveled by caravan working as a cook. One night, she was in the forest gathering some flowers when she came upon a dryad. She spoke to it, and the creature said she would become an agent of the Fey. In exchange for the powers conferred to her, she would inform the Fey of what was happening on the Borderlands. With little hope of improving herself, Celina agreed. She woke up on the road again, heading towards the frontier, but with new abilities that she has been using on those in the caravan.

Background: Charlatan (I shave coins or forge documents.)
Personality: I lie about almost everything, even when there’s no good reason to.
Flattery is my preferred trick for getting what I want.
Ideal: Fairness. I never target people who can’t afford to lose a few coins. (Lawful)
Bond: I swindled and ruined a person who didn’t deserve it. I seek to atone for my misdeeds but might never be able to forgive myself.

I will render a decision before the day is through. I've got a few things to do, but I will carve out some time to determine who is in.

Okay, in light of having so many applicants, I have decided to run two separate tables. I'm probably crazy, but we'll see.
If you were not chosen, please do not feel that you had a bad application. All were very good, and this was a difficult choice to make. In the end, I could only take 12. So without further delay, would the following people please report to the Gameplay thread of this game.

I am going to ask that since we do have two groups, please do not lurk in the other group to get hints. Each group is an individual unit and will have different experiences, based on their decisions and the result of the random rolls, but the adventures are fundamentally the same. So please don't cheat.

Table 1
Theo Sylvanblood [ShadNo]
Ore Thornstock [DeviousDevious]
Isandril Velahrn [F. Castor]
Morgan McWright [Captain Moonscar]
Zaradar the Skylord [mishima]
Ya'Bo Bright toes [Ya'Bo]

Also, would the following people please report to the gameplay thread here.

Table 2
Baern Holderhek [KingHotTrash]
Hoddy Fonkin [Daniel Stewart]
Hes Grimlock [scranford]
Garret Goodbarrel [Umbungo]
Shaianni Fadrick [Vrog Skyreaver]
Teasag Galt [MrStr4ng3]

Congrats to all chosen! Have fun!

Congrats to those chosen. Have a great campaign!

Congrats guys, have fun!

@ Ya'Bo: A few things I noticed about your status you might want to look at.

Mage Armor is (13+Dex), there is no FF or Touch AC in 5e, and I'm not sure how you have 11 HP. As far as I can tell it should be 7?

Now seems like a really good time to bring attention to this. His stats are all wonky.

STR 10, DEX 14, CON 12, INT 15, WIS 14, CHA 14

Based on his original rolls (14 14 14 12 10 13) something is missing a race point (+2 INT, +1 DEX). INT or DEX should be one point higher, depending on which stat he put the 13 in.

His saves should be STR +0, DEX +2, CON +1, INT +4, WIS +4, CHA +2

Yeah, in setting up my reference block, I noticed that a few things were out of sorts. He did say that this his second PbP, so I'm inclined to be lenient, so long as he corrects these things before we get too deep.

What say you, Ya'Bo? Where did the extra HP come from and where did the missing point go?

Scarab Sages

Sorry about that, this character is based on a 2nd level wizard I in play in D&D AL. Yes I just missed or miss typed the INT. I am very sorry and will make the changes.
