Growing up in Phaendar as a Swanson meant upholding a certain reputation for grace and confidence. After all, the family had not earned the Swan surname by mere chance. Indeed, Braden's father was in his day a Chernasardo Ranger, using his poise and dexterity in the cause of protecting their people's freedom.
But Braden, the oldest and only boy of the immediate family, was very different. Braden usually preferred to go by the name Brad, but his young peers preferred a different name--Bread. They joked that he was plain and boring. And they weren't wrong. Brad was a dull conversationalist. And the teasing made him shy and awkward around people, a far cry from his charismatic father. Yet beneath that boring exterior was a boy with a burning desire to learn and understand. Had he grown up in an urban environment, he might have become a scholar or wizard. Instead, growing up in the wilderness, he became a student of nature. Isolated from his peers, Brad found his companionship through animals. To Brad, animals were pure. Their motives were simple and genuine. They were okay with Brad being different. Eventually, Brad grew up, and he needed a way to make a living. And desiring a place where being learned was an asset and not a liability, Brad joined the priesthood, following in the ways of Erastil. But his faith was shallow. Brad had no trouble learning the sayings and scriptures. But he did not hold to those beliefs in the way a true follower might. He certainly had never been granted any divine powers. It was fortunate that Brad had learned a thing or two about using a bow--his father's bow, no less--because it gave Brad a sense of credibility that he would otherwise not have. The day of the hobgoblin attack was like any other day. Braden had been tasked with going to the market to fetch some incense--they had run through quite a bit with the Festival in full swing. But then a large tower erupted from the ground in the middle of the Market Green. And as the hobgoblins attacked, Braden was struck in the side. He stumbled away, stunned, and found himself unthinkingly in front of Oreld's Fine Shop, the very place he was trying to reach to restock on incense. Fearful about his injury and the future, he was just trying to find a place to survive. He immediately took up Oreld's offer to hide in the cellar. In the midst of the explosions and chaos heard above them, Brad felt truly desperate and vulnerable. He realized that he had brought the censer with him, and he held it and issued a desperate prayer to Erastil. He held fast to the holy censer. Suddenly, to his astonishment, Brad felt a surge of . . . something . . . followed by the arrow wound on the side of his body close up, like it was never there. "No, it can't be. Is this for real?" He had felt it, coming from the censer he was holding. It was a miracle! Erastil was with them. With him! Brad was reawakened. Erastil had granted His power in this time of need, and surely it was to do more than just allow Brad to cowardly hide. He was ready. Taking his bow in hand, he waited to see what might come through that door. And if it came down to it, he was going to try his hand at hunting hobgoblins for the first time. Character Sheet:
