For the record, it was never "no Standard actions outside of combat." :-P

Ali'yanah D'ohr'hein |

Oh. Then I misinterpreted this:
Edward life links with Kappi! (That's a Standard action, BTW, so no doing it out of combat.)
My apologies. :-)

GM thunderspirit |

Family & I are heading to St. Louis for the weekend. Will pick this back up by Tuesday.

Davosh the Wanderer |

Have a good Labor Day weekend!
I'll be here digesting the new Iron Maiden album.

Davosh the Wanderer |

I'm running from the White Mountains to Hampton Beach. I'll be MIA Friday and Saturday.

GM thunderspirit |

No worries. Let's hold off advancing things until Sunday at the earliest.

GM thunderspirit |

Here's how the avoidance ability is worded:
Avoidance (Ex) When a mindslaver mold is infesting a living or an undead creature, it can attempt a Reflex save as an immediate action to completely avoid an attack that would normally have hit it. This attack instead harms the infested creature—the mold effectively slithers out of the way of the incoming attack so that the blow strikes the creature it controls. The mindslaver mold must choose to attempt avoidance after the attack roll is resolved but before damage is rolled.
1) It mentions "an attack that would normally have hit it." Could you be more vague, please?
2) One reasonable interpretation would be that such an attack requires an attack roll. This gives some credence to Davosh's thought that burning gaze should be unaffected.
3) However, in other mechanics that use this sort of thing — i.e., the Mounted Combat feat — the use of an attack roll is specified. It is not here. That leads (some) doubt as to whether that's the case.
4) There's also no DC set for avoiding the attack. In our case, I simply substituted the Fort save DC for a Refl save DC.
5) Additionally, there's no limitation (i.e., 1/round) on the ability. Presumably, it can do this all the effing time. Which is borderline broken, and at the very least unnecessarily mean to the PCs.
6) James Jacobs (concept guy, not rules guy) says it's supposed to work like Mounted Combat. So there's that.
I'm inclined to agree that it should resemble Mounted Combat in function, and should probably work only on attacks that use an attack roll. (I really, really wish it said that cos it would clear up a lot of confusion.) That also means there's a 5% chance an attack misses entirely, since it's now a saving throw; which then leads me to wonder how that interacts with a nat 20 on the attack roll, since that should always hit. Grr.
Not retconning this encounter, and if I never see another critter with this ability it'll be too soon. But those are my thoughts on it.

Davosh the Wanderer |

No worries, not looking for retcon either. Though, I'll ask to future-con Hex to work as intended :-)

Thanks for the explaination. It is a, lets use a good technical term, wonky ability.
I will say that I didn't realize it before that James Jacobs was a concept and not a rules guy. This lets me cut him some slack when he came down on the obvious wrong side of a question with some very questionable logic. When presented with compelling fact, and very well written opposing arguments he not only didn't change, he doubled down. So since then I've taken stuff he posts with a big grain of salt. I'm sure he's a good guy, and maybe he had a bad day/ week when this convo went on.

Kappi Matarito |

I find a lot of this rules lawyering kind of hilarious.
I remember a few years ago I met a young guy who had just passed the BAR (or was about to?). I asked what kind of law he wanted to practice and I was totally shocked to hear him explain to me how he wanted to get in on laws for games. He was referring to multiuser online gaming and started talking about stuff I only vaguely understood.
On one hand I thought it was the stupidest thing in the world but I also think "doggy daycare" is completely stupid. But if people are willing to give you money for, then I guess its pretty smart.

GM thunderspirit |

Golarion was Jacobs' home setting for a lot of years, so anyone who games there owes his imagination a bunch. And he's great for getting the intent of things regarding the ruleset.
But yeah, Jason Buhlman is the hard-core rules guy. (And everyone gets a crack at him, for obvious reasons. If ya want a good chuckle, check out this, in the wake of a huge blow-up board-wide about armor spikes.)

Ali'yanah D'ohr'hein |

5) Additionally, there's no limitation (i.e., 1/round) on the ability. Presumably, it can do this all the effing time. Which is borderline broken, and at the very least unnecessarily mean to the PCs.
actually, there is. It's an Immediate action:
"Swift Action: A swift action consumes a very small amount of time, but represents a larger expenditure of effort and energy than a free action. You can perform only a single swift action per turn.
"Immediate Action: An immediate action is very similar to a swift action, but can be performed at any time—even if it's not your turn."
so, 1/round

GM thunderspirit |

2,400 xp for the two grey oozes;
1,600 for the mold and host;
plus a bonus 1,500 story award for bringing Finngarth back alive!

Kappi Matarito |

FYI, I broke my phone so might be limited in checking on the game for a few days.
On Wed I'll be on family vacation for a week out of the country.
Between the two of those I might need some people to post for Kappi. He is pretty easy to play, just think of all the cool stuff we did in 8th grade and layer it with the same social awkwardness of the time period.

Awesome! Where to?

GM thunderspirit |

Can't speak for Kappi, but my lovely bride and I are in Nashville this week attending an annual conference; I will be spotty this week at best anyway.

Kappi Matarito |

Kappi and Liska (and maybe some others) failed their save for the haunt. So we have -2 to just about all of our rolls. For only the next four minutes. So assuming nothing attacks us out here. We can just sort of "take a break" while Edward pats his back and tells him its okay?
Then after 4 minutes we can continue with no harm done?

Davosh the Wanderer |

I was thinking the same. We're definitely not done here so I don't want to leave.

GM thunderspirit |

Your GM may have, um, other plans, though...

Vojtek Wartooth |

I'll be in Israel until around the 21st. I don't think I'll have much connectivity.

Vojtek Wartooth |

Real Life Comes First [tm], compadre. Always.
Vojtek's attack roll needs some revision, though, since you guys are 4th level. And the revised roll of 16 will miss.
OK so I made the correction in my attack paste-o-matic. Sorry about that - honest mistake.

GM thunderspirit |

THANK YOU to all our service men/women out there. You do the jobs that make us (U.S.) what we are!
That's an endorsement, right? ;-)
Seriously, though: while I think America could be a whole lot better than it is, this whole grand democratic republic experiment is pretty cool, even 239 years later. :-)
Echoing the thanks. *salute*

GM thunderspirit |

1800 for the huecuvas plus 1200 for the Very Scary, Nearly Crit Kappi frost wight.
Where does that count put you guys?

Dungeon Master S |

Yes, that was very scary. I need my home PC to know the exact XP total, but the sheet I have says we needed 2,900 each to level. Is that the party total or individual total?

GM thunderspirit |

That 3000 is to be divvied up between the five of you.

Davosh the Wanderer |

Then we are at at least 7,700 each, but I'll confirm at home.

Davosh the Wanderer |

So I figure now is as good a time as any. I know TS does almost exclusively PFS and shopping is a different beast there. All the PCs are used to my style of home game (Complete Campaign, GMG city stats etc.) TS, how do you want to handle shopping for items when the time comes?

![]() |

Ok I'm back, will try to catch up over the weekend... thanks for the autopilot.
Thank you so much for the Veterans day words. I always like to point out that the families know sacrifice as much as the service member. So my hats off to all of them also.
I have us having 8500xp, and needing 1500 till the next level. It's on the spreadsheet, I will provide a link later so everyone can review and update if they want.
It's just on a different tab than the Crimson Throne in google drive.

GM thunderspirit |

With your permission, Edward, I'll put a link to that up on the Campaign tab.

Vojtek Wartooth |

I'm back from Israel - I didn't realize DM TS was a veteran... sweet.
My wife is active Army, I was too until I tapped out a few years back and switched to Reserve. And Joe was a flat bellied steely eyed killer of a Marine... I think he was the one who taught Chesty Puller how to march and salute back in the day.

Vojtek Wartooth |

Phil - My plan for Vojtek is to follow the dragon totem progression and have him learn to fly as part of his character build. Its a way off at this point, and a ring of feather fall isn't all that impossible to come by. But if we get to the point where Vojtek is flying around and we don't have another, maybe we can trade it or something? Then again, Vojtek carrying Kappi and dropping him safely behind enemy lines would be a very cool tactic. :)
Just testing the waters on your willingness - and calling dibs on the next one :)

I am not.
I was close to entering the Navy twice in my teens/early 20s. Both times I couldn't get a signed commitment on career field. Then after September 11, I wanted to enlist in the Reserves, but my (mercifully) former wife wouldn't hear of it.
My current (and wouldn't-even-trade-her-for-Drew-Barrymore-and-that's-saying-something) wife, however, spent eight years in the AF. Which, y'know, kinda makes me a vet-in-law. LOL

Vojtek Wartooth |

/salute
My wife's deployment was harder to deal with than my own. It is really tough to be the one at home - at least while deployed myself I knew what the heck was happening. Veteran-in-law is legit.

I think you know Kappi is a team player. He really wants celestial armor and a sword of subtlety. So, you know, if you find that laying around somewhere...

Vojtek Wartooth |

Nice. So once I can fly we will reevaluate this item. I sort of want kappi to be the world's first paratrooper. But I also don't want to run out of mojo and plummet to the ground.

Vojtek Wartooth |

Traveling to the great state of Wisconsin for a week for a conference. I should have easy and regular connectivity.
